• Review – Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009)

Cast – Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Govind Namdeo, Darshan Jariwala, Zakir Husain, Upen Patel, Smita Jaykar

    Direction – Raj Kumar Santoshi

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, directed by Raj Kumar Santoshi, was one of the most awaited films of the year especially because Santoshi earlier in his career made Andaz Apna Apna, which many call the best comedy film ever in Indian Cinema. Furthermore, it starred Ranbir Kapoor who looks to be the best bet as of now to wear the crown of the next superstar in Bollywood. Katrina Kaif paired up with Ranbir Kapoor only adds to the craze.

Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani is very much on the same lines as of Andaz Apna Apna and Raj Kumar Santoshi borrows most of the structure from that film. In the end, one might say Raj Kumar Santoshi ended up making APKGK very similar to AAA in an attempt to recreate the magic of AAA. And the film fails just because of the reason that it now is compared to AAA. (more…)

  • NG Weekly Digest: Ranbir Kapoor (Special Dedication)

Because B H A I was getting so restless for Ranbir news, I thought he should get a special dedication in addition to the usual one :)

    Big Bachchan on RK

Abhishek did his first day for ‘PAA’ today. Had another star visitor on set, Ranbir Kapoor. He later sent me a sweet and affectionate sms, which was most endearing. Talking about my look in the film. He has shaped up so well in his career so far and with such ease and rapidity. Cannot imagine he was assisting Sanjay Leela Bhansali as an AD on ‘Black’. His tutoring and training on Ayesha the little girl that played Rani’s younger portion, paid such dividends for the little artist. He and Sonam Kapoor were assistants on the set together. And now look at them. Big stars in their own right. Feels so wonderful to watch how this generation grows and accomplishes itself.

    Imran Khan on RK (more…)

It’s the season for hit jodis. While award winners Hrithik and Priyanka are the pair of the year for their sterling performance, another hit pair wowed audiences at the 54th Idea Filmfare Awards 2008. Bollywood’s boy wonders Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan replaced stars Shah Rukh and Saif as hosts at the awards night.Taking potshots at each other, cracking jokes about the audience and ensuring themselves roles in Dostana 2, Ranbir and Imran kept the audience rolling in the aise with their razor sharp wit and crackerjack comments.
Sample this: “Bura mat manna, lekin log tera last name sun kar Aamir Khan ke baare mein sochte hain. I am the future,’’ said Ranbir. “Aur tera last name sunkar Sonam kapoor ke baare mein sochte hain. I am the future,’’ quipped Imran. The two also did imitations of SRK in Rab Ne (Ranbir) and Aamir in Ghajini (Imran).

On the red carpet, they were overheard discussing that Karan Johar had started the show. “I just hope we don’t end up finishing it,” they mock shuddered! As the newest Khan on the block said, “There will be Rekhaji, Rakeshji out there…,” the latest entrant from the Kapoor khandaan added, “Yaar, I’m just scared of Rishiji and Neetuji…” (more…)

    Ranbir Kapoor

He’s more famous for his celebrity family and starlet girlfriend than for his films – but he’s already being called the face of Bollywood’s next generation.

Just who does Ranbir Kapoor think he is?

He’s been hailed as the new hope of Hindi cinema – despite the fact that he’s made only two films so far, neither of which has been a hit. Then again, he’s a Kapoor, scion of the nation’s most extraordinary film dynasty. That might not impress those of us weary of India’s obsession with nepotism and dynasties – but you might be impressed with Ranbir, a bright, ambitious actor who clearly knows he has to do a lot more than drop his last name to make it in 21st-century Bollywood. In this interview, Ranbir opens up with some refreshingly honest answers about everything, from riding on his father’s coattails to sex and drugs, to why he really doesn’t deserve all the money he’s making. • Ranbir Kapoor turns director

Two films old only, and he wants to take up direction already to revive his grandfather’s R K Films’ flagging banner.

And, if newcomer Ranbir Kapoor is to be believed, he would have taken up a home production earlier, only he had already accepted a lot of acting work outside. “My plan got delayed, but now I’m working on it,” Ranbir told BT with an air of bravado. “Things will fall into place very shortly. I’ll star in the film and direct it. Is that too much responsibility?” Yes, it certainly is! “But I don’t think so,” argued Neetu and Rishi Kapoor’s son. “I’m passionate about being a director. I’ve lots to say. And I hope audiences accept me as a director as much as they have as an actor.”

Raj Kapoor would love his enthusiasm. For Ranbir is clear that his home production will be a celebration of cinema. “It will bring a smile to the face, a tear to the eye, that RK Films was famous for,” he promised. But Papa Rishi might not find a spot in it. “We get lots of offers to act together, and I’d love to share camera space with him, but Dad’s busy with several acting assignments,” Ranbir revealed.

Comparisons with Rishi, that Prince of Romance in the action era of angry young man Amitabh Bachchan and he-man Dharmendra, are unavoidable. But Ranbir said, “I’m not making a conscious effort to walk in my father’s footsteps, though he’s my favourite actor and I don’t mind being compared with him. But I don’t act or dance like him, I want to be myself on screen.” (more…)
