Deja view, Trinidad?

Abhishek Bachchan danced with pa Amitabh in Trinidad for The Unforgettable tour — 27 years after their first performance there

The Unforgettable Tour in Trinidad on Sunday night was not the first time Abhishek Bachchan shared the stage with his father, Amitabh there. Twenty seven years ago, a similar event had occurred when the senior Bachchan had a performance staged there.

Speaking from Los Angeles, Big B says emotionally, “It was like a homecoming for us. For Aishwarya, it was a first time in this country but not for the rest of us. When Abhishek was five, I had brought him on stage while performing my song ‘Mere paas aao’ (Mr Natwarlal). And would you believe it, the Trinidadians have still not forgotten that?”

Drona Promo Getting Good Feedback

(Trust Mumbai Mirror to spin a negative story round this!)

The first promo of Goldie Behl’s Drona which began airing from Sunday might have got the filmmaker good feedback, but has left the leading lady of the film, Priyanka Chopra, completely shaken and miffed, according to her close friends. The entire promo, which lasts for a minute, does not have even the briefest glimpse of Priyanka Chopra. It’s Abhishek Bachchan all the way.

Our source says, “The first teaser promo of Drona is out and surprisingly Priyanka is nowhere in it. It might be the strategy of the producers to start with the promotion of Abhishek Bachchan since he plays Drona, but Priyanka who is one of the top stars in the industry today is not terribly happy about being ignored completely.” Reportedly, she sulked and moped a whole day when she saw the promo.

When contacted, Shrishti Arya, producer of the film, said, “It’s not true that Priyanka is upset. Priyanka is a very close friend and she has loved the promo. If she was upset I would have known about it, since I have already met her twice after she saw the promo. She gave me no indication. It is all part of the promotions and she will also feature in the promo later, that’s been decided already.”

Sylvester Stallone shoots for Kambakht Ishq

Sajid Nadiadwala has always been known to be a generous producer who doesn’t believe in any kind of compromise when it comes to his films. His latest production Kambakht Ishq, directed by debutante director Sabir Khan has been in the news right from the day when the film was announced. After all, the film stars two of the hottest actors in the industry- Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. Add to it, news that Sajid was even planning to rope in some Hollywood biggies such as Sylvester Stallone etc. for this film and expectations from this film only got bigger and bigger.

Recently, Sajid fulfilled his much cherished dream and got none other than Sylvester Stallone (the legendary actor of films like Rocky and Rambo) shoot for his film Kambakht Ishq. Sly, (as he is known) arrived bang on time at 9 a.m. on the sets at the Kodak theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. Bollywood’s very own Khiladi, Akshay Kumar was present and the duo shot for an ‘award ceremony’ scene at the very place where the prestigious Academy Awards are held. Surely, there couldn’t have been a better place for Nadiadwala to shoot this scene for his film which is set against the backdrop of Hollywood. Holly Vance, the sensuous and pretty actress (of Entourage fame) was also present on the sets along with Stallone

An exclusive look at Dostana

LINK

Dharma Productions’ next release is the Abhishek Bachchan- John Abraham- Priyanka Chopra starrer Dostana. The film is directed by Karan Johar’s erstwhile assistant Tarun Mansukhani. A major portion of the film was shot in the sun-clad beaches of Miami and needless to say, the cast and crew had the time of their lives. As can be seen from the still, the trio of AB Jr., John and Priyanka look completely chilled out enjoying a drink on the beach. While John looks super-duper fit, even Priyanka looks sizzling hot in this green dress. As for AB Jr., he looks like a complete dude with a scarf around his neck and cool glares to beat the sun.

The shooting of the film is almost complete barring an item number which is yet to be shot. Since Abhishek is now busy with his ‘Unforgettable’ tour, the song featuring all the 3 lead actors will be shot only when he returns in September. Dostana is about 3 friends and is portrayed as a cool, fun film. Looks like Johnny boy, AB Jr. and Piggy Chops indeed had a ball shooting with each other in the picturesque locales of Miami. While Priyanka seems to have her hands full with shopping bags, it’s quite a funny sight to see John pushing AB Jr. in a shopping cart.

Going by the first look of the film and the chemistry which the actors share, Dostana indeed looks like a complete fun-filled experience. The film is slated to release on Nov 14 this year.

The Dark Knight: Batman is a Hamlet for our times

If Shakespeare had been alive today, he would have found abundant raw material in this most reimagined of comic book characters.

As the new Batman film - The Dark Knight - grinds towards us, like some slow-moving juggernaut whose driver isn’t strong enough to turn the wheel, it occurs to me that the Caped Crusader is really something special. Batman is the icon for our times, Shakespearian in his ability to withstand multiple reinterpretation, a Hamlet or Lear for the 21st century.

In this, Batman is by far the most resonant superhero - far more fertile ground for modulation and restyling than that doughty veteran Superman, or that hyperactive new kid on the blockbuster block, Spider-Man. Johnny-come-latelies like X-Men, Hellboy or Iron Man are, frankly, knee high to all this.

In the same way that any given Shakespeare text is remodelled, refurbished and redesigned for one generation or another, so too has been Batman. The character is now part-way through its fourth serious movie phase. (Like another popular, but lesser, icon, Doctor Who, Batman regenerates as and when necessary.) The “Nolan” Batman is a serious-minded work, preoccupied with the inner life of the vigilante, and does its level best to ground the traditional tales of supervillains and hi-tech gadgetry in some kind of coherent sense of reality. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight share much with high-testosterone action thrillers like Die Hard and The Terminator: a high-myth narrative superstructure bolted on to a recognisable quotidian milieu.

‘Dark Knight’ continues to break records

Following its historic weekend, the latest Batman movie has set new standards for mid-week box-office grosses, with a $203.8 mil five-day total.

The Dark Knight continues to smash records at the box office. A mere five days into its domestic theatrical run, the second Batman movie from star Christian Bale and director Christopher Nolan has earned a whopping $203.8 mil. That utterly obliterates the old record for the fastest movie to reach the $200 mil mark, set by Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, which took eight days to achieve the feat. It’s worth noting that the Pirates sequel went on to earn $423.3 mil domestically — a sum that now appears to be in reach for The Dark Knight in the long run.

Following a record-breaking opening weekend, during which it grossed a staggering $158.4 mil, the comic-book flick banked $24.5 mil on Monday (the best non-holiday Monday gross ever) and $20.9 mil on Tuesday (the best non-holiday Tuesday take of all time). The total earnings for The Dark Knight’s first four days of release ($182.9 mil) and first five days out ($203.8 mil) are also new historical highs. What’s more, in less than a week, the film has earned almost as much as its predecessor, 2005’s Batman Begins, grossed during its entire run ($205.3 mil), and this film has already brought in more money than four of the previous six live-action Batman movies made in theaters.

At press time, The Dark Knight ranks No. 84 on the all-time domestic box office roster (a notch behind Terminator 2: Judgment Day, which was the highest-grossing movie of 1991). To track its fast ascension up the list, check back with EW.com on Friday for our weekly Box Office Preview.

How do you know if a film is faring well at the box-office? Generally, one gets the feedback from trustworthy sources, also from the correspondents and exhibitors screening the film. But I’ve realized that the tone in which the distributors speak gives away the verdict of the film.

The distributors, who’ve invested their hard-earned money on a film, never mince words when a film bombs. And the tone only gets better [excited/happy/thrilled] when the film hits the bulls eye. I’ve realized this over the years. In fact, the excitement shows in their body language!

This week, as I spoke to the various distributors of KISMAT KONNECTION, I realized that the film had passed the weekend test with distinction marks. The weekdays did witness the normal drop, but it wasn’t alarming, as a section of the trade was hoping it would be.
