Box Office Madness
JayShah’s Saturday Box Office Column – Slump at box office…
Note all numbers are from Trade Guide
Reporting Methodology
1) New films most of the time where possible will be benchmarked against other films ‘in the same range’. The gross used for the older films will be either one’s I have computed or a BOI gross or a gross from Joginder’s column
2) Films currently playing – I will always do some trending analysis. This is always against the ‘week before’
3) To compute subsequent week grosses I will always benchmark against ‘the first week’. Before it was always the preceding week, but Week 1 is always the best base because it gives maximum centres to use
4) Going forward I will show ONE example in FULL and show the results of the remaining scenarios

Mr White Mr Black
Its not surprising Mr White Mr Black took such a poor start at the box office and only racked up around 2.0-2.3Cr over the week. The film looked rather dated and the promos were quite un-inspiring. The film’s been flat out rejected.

An opening week that was meant to be historic turned out to be a nightmare for most concerned with Tashan. The huge multi-star comedy/actioner riding on the success of the recent box office exploits of its stars; Akshay Kumar (a run of 5 successes in a row), Saif Ali Khan (substantial success from Race), Kareena Kapoor (accolades and box office success from Jab We Met) and Anil Kapoor (supporting acts in Welcome and Race) AND with one of the biggest production houses calling the shots, Tashan had all the pieces in the jigsaw in place to potentially annihilate opening week records. Unfortunately, the stubbornness of Yashraj and the ‘squeezing out’ of multiplex owners causing a revenue sharing row meant Tashan failed to release in most multiplexes for the whole of the week. In this age of huge multiplex revenues, the loss is likely to be greater than 10Cr nett revenues for the week.
There really hasn’t been much good fortune for Tashan from any quarters. The reviews have by in large ripped the movie apart and comparisons to films last year have been less than complimentary. The opening in small centres too lacked the frenzy and buzz seen for big releases. The pre-release publicity was lackluster; was this a disaster waiting to happen? The one bit of good news the film has received is that it will release in multiplexes in week two. That it could be all too late is a near a bang on certainty, but it could help to repair some damage.
YRF, multiplexes settle for all films; Tashan screens 3 May (detailed piece)
MUMBAI: Exactly one week post the release of Yash Raj Films’ Tashan, the production house has finally resolved the revenue sharing terms issue with multiplexes.
The negotiations between the two parties had fallen apart last week. The point in discussion was revenue share terms between Yash Raj and multiplexes for screening movies from Yash Raj’s slate for the year 2008, which included Tashan, Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Bachna Ae Haseeno and Roadside Romeo.
The movie, which released on 25 April, is expected to commence screening from tomorrow (3 May) at multiplexes across the country.
Multiplexes executives, on condition of anonymity, confirmed to Businessofcinema.com that the revenue sharing issue with Yash Raj Films had been resolved and that Tashan would start screening from 3 May.
Yash Raj - Multiplexes issue sorted out
An understanding has been reached between Yash Raj Films and the multiplexes for the entire YRF slate of films for the year 2008. This agreement commences with Vijay Krishna Acharya’s TASHAN, which will be released in multiplexes nationwide starting Saturday, May 3.
This will be followed by Kunal Kohli’s THODA PYAR THODA MAGIC on June 27, Siddharth Anand’s BACHNA AE HASEENO on August 15, Jugal Hansraj’s ROADSIDE ROMEO on October 24 and culminates with Aditya Chopra’s RAB NE BANA DI JODI on December 12.
The terms agreed upon are to the mutual satisfaction of all concerned parties.
Multiplexes snap ties with Yash Raj
MUMBAI: The bubble was just waiting to burst. Multiplex owners and Yash Raj Films (the production company of filmmaker, Yash Chopra and his son, Aditya) have decided to go through the divorce they have been contemplating for so long. The acrimony could extend to the next five films of the banner.
Multiplexes have decided not to buckle under Yash Raj pressure which has led to a total continued ban on Tashan. This has even led to a movie hall in Bandra, Globus, downing its shutters for a week! And Suburbia, again in Bandra, has actually put up a disgruntled board near its ticket counter saying “Please don’t ask us for Tashan tickets. Ask Yash Raj movies!”
Each time a Yash Raj film is ready for release, a tug-of-war erupts between its representatives and multiplex owners. While the latter feel that the banner asks for an excessive revenue share, Yash Raj representatives think that any film from the banner justifies this.
Multiplexes generally offer 48% of revenue to the distributor for the first week but Yash Raj’s demand is 55%. They went a notch higher for Tashan with 60% and this did not go down well with multiplex owners who decided not to release the film.
Trade Espresso: The ‘pharmoola’, the hype, the ‘pheeelop’
Every element seemed to be in place. Intense publicity, top league stars, no big release in competition, and the summer season which attracts the youth audience to the cinema halls by droves. Nothing helped.
Dull wave
Tashan laid a big egg at the box office. Vijay Krishna Acharya (co-writer of Dhoom and Dhoom II) was directing for the first time and it showed in the incoherent result which will do nothing - of not damage - the standing of its producer Yash Raj films. Read Aditya Chopra. Clearly the Chopra clout is diminishing.
Multiplex owners had resolved not to buckle into Yash Raj’s demand of a higher percentage of ticket sales. Usually, such an impasse has been resolved either on the eve of a film in contention, or at most the day after its release.
Tashan is not clicking at the Box Office
In November 2006, Dhoom-II from Yash Raj Films got off to a bumper opening. Since then, most films churned out by the banner have been taking a beating at the turnstiles, except for Chak De India, and to some extent, Ta Ra Rum Pum. Most have failed to get even a decent opening.
All that was expected to change with their latest offering, Tashan. An ensemble star-cast which has been making all the right noises, attractive promos and a strong pre-release buzz were all signalling a good start.
However, reports from around the country are pointing towards a discouraging show, say experts. “It’s one of the weakest films coming from them,” says Taran Adarsh, editor, Trade Guide. “The film has got no opening and the feedback from those who have seen the film is very bad.”
JayShah’s Saturday Box Office Column – U Me Aur Hum reasonably steady…

TASHAN- This is arguably the biggest film of 2008. I am doing it 3 weeks prior to the film’s release in a separate thread and after reading predictions by few other NG members. ;) After all, not for every film you have juntaa chatting everyday on NG’s shoutbox about a film’s box-office eventuality ever since the release of its pictures. Tashan is creating hype and curiosity.
My prediction-
Maharashtra Herald Interviews + Box Office Column

THE TICKET : Friday fun wins the day… again
Friday saw the release of three films all of which have different backdrops. Shaurya (court martial drama) and Khuda Ke Liya (a film about the post 9/11 environment for Pakistanis) received favourable reviews from critics. Bhram, the third release, is a thriller, met with poor reviews overall. All three films registered poor starts at the box office and it will be interesting to see if any one of them can pick momentum in the days to come. For now, their chances appear slim
Back to the last week, One Two Three after having a poor and sluggish start made amends during the week to record around Rs 10.0-10.5 crore from India. This comic caper continues the trend of comedies being the most bankable genre at the boxoffice.
Though not a substantial success or anything to labour over for too long, it does suggest that a small-medium budget comedy stands a markedly better chance of survival then any other genre currently. The trend for most comedies seems to be a spate of poor reviews only to have the box office declaring them winners.

1-2-3
Comedies continue to be bankable earners and 1-2-3 continues this trend. Though there is nothing extra-ordinary about how much it has made so far, it is still only a little shy of what a film like Jab We Met made in its first week. To avoid this abstract comparison, all I am attempting to say is a small-medium budget comedy stands a markedly better chance of survival then any other genre currently. It is very much a bankable proposition.
