Saawariya India first on (Blu-ray)
Hopefully other Producers follows this format.
Though it loses its way after a magical opening before recovering again in its last half-hour, there is an awful lot to like in Saawariya (2007), a visually spectacular Bollywood musical. This reviewer can only claim limited exposure to the genre, just a dozen or so films to date, but this one seems more ambitious plot- and character-wise than the typical Hindi/Urdu spectacular - it’s adapted from Dostoevsky’s White Nights for one thing - and it’s somewhat unusual in other ways. The Blu-ray disc is mind-blowingly gorgeous, a real feast for the eyes and ears, and one of the best-looking high-def titles yet released, with the kind of movie-transfer combination that makes the ideal “demo disc” to show to family and friends.
Set it a Moulin Rogue-type timeless fantasy metropolis vaguely mixing predominantly Eastern European architecture with Western Europe design and Islamic iconography, Saawariya’s story is engagingly narrated by not-quite-cynical but straight-talking prostitute Gulabji (Rani Mukerji). Big-hearted aspiring singer Ranbir Raj (Ranbir Kapoor) arrives in the unnamed city’s Red Light District, landing a job at the RK Bar, and finding lodgings in the home of nonagenarian landlady Lillian (Zohra Sehgal), whom he affectionately calls “Lillipop.”
One evening Raj meets a mysterious, beautiful but obviously unhappy young carpet weaver, Sakina (Sonam Kapoor, no relation to Ranbir), and instantly falls madly in love with her. She stubbornly resists his efforts to charm her though gradually she succumbs to his irrepressible good-naturedness. Also gradually, however, Sakina reveals that her heart belongs to another, a darkly handsome sailor (or spy, the film is deliberately vague about this) named Imaan (Salman Khan), whom she knew for less than two days but who promises to meet her one year from the day they parted.
Saawariya was filmed entirely on soundstages: elaborately designed alleys and cobblestone streets and rivers complete with Venetian-style gondolas, in some cases creating the illusion of several city blocks within single wide angle shots that probably incorporate forced perspective and painted backdrops, though the illusion is basically flawless. The fact that virtually the entire film takes place at night helps maintain the illusion; sets are bathed in dark greens, deep blues, and other cool colors with yellows and reds (such as Gulabji’s Indian wardrobe) for thematic emphasis.

I’m not unprofessional! - Ajay Devgan
When Ajay Devgan talks, people listen. That’s because he doesn’t talk much to begin with!
The actor’s been directing his debut film U, Me Aur Hum the last couple of months (he’s also acting and producing it) and looks tired.
In an exclusive chat, Ajay reveals what went wrong with Anubhav Sinha’s Cash and his steamy number in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.
Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag releases today.
Yes, and I’m very excited. However, I feel it shouldn’t be compared to Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay, which is a landmark film. RGV’s Aag is a completely different genre, has a different attitude, technique and language.
RajKumar Santoshi on Halla Bol
REAL LIFE OF REEL-LIFE HERO BY SANTOSHI
By Eye TV India Bureau
A director who always pours his heart on celluloid can be none other than Raj Kumar Santoshi. This time, he has retuned with a real-life story of a reel-life hero, Ajay Devgan, under Abdol Samee Siddiqui’s production. Santoshi has named the movie ‘Halla Bol’. He tells us why he made this movie at this period of time. He has been known though for swimming against the tide in Bollywood by making different genres of movies at different times. Santoshi spoke to media on what will potentially make ‘Halla Bol’ another unforgettable film from his stable. He justifies the choice of Ajay Devgan as hero and Vidya Balan as heroine. He has also involved his star friends through their guest appearances. Santoshi is looking forward to the viewers’ response to ‘Halla Bol’ before contemplating the theme of his next movie.
Excerpts of the interview:
Since your films pick up their inspiration from reality, what prompted you to film ‘Halla Bol’?
‘Halla Bol’ is about the youth and how they should not tolerate injustice but raise their voice and attack. ‘Halla Bol’ meaning attack, is about how one must not take injustice lying down. This is very important. I am not advocating violence in my film but talking about raising our voice against injustice and protesting. I have been toying with this idea since the last four or five years.
