King Khan to direct Chak De India sequel
Juicy Mausi
Last updated : Nov 24, 2007

For a change Shah Rukh will be following Aamir’s footsteps. Aamir has already turned a director, and now Shah Rukh will be directing the sequel to Chak De India. It is rumoured SRK’s directorial debut will not be produced by the Yashraj banner, but by SRK’s company Red Chillies Entertainment. Apart from playing producer and director, SRK will also act in the film.

A source from the industry who’s reputed to be close to SRK, mentioned, “The idea of making a sequel came to SRK after seeing the success of Chak De India at the box office. SRK will be meeting Yash Chopra to obtain the necessary consent. The sequel begins with SRK marrying one of the girls from the team. The film will also revolve around women’s hockey. The shooting is to begin from the middle of the next year”.

Looks like scenario 1 :-)

Why OSO is an equation changing film?!

Leaving aside the raging debate on which film between Om Shanti Om and Saawariya will turn out to be the better film and set the box-office ablaze, the scenarios that could emerge following an OSO success/failure will be equally exciting to watch.

Wow, great news!
Indiafm By Devansh Patel

Now this is official news coming to you live from London’s Odeon cinema in Leicester Square. Yesterday, (21st October, Sunday) at the Times BFI 51st London Film Festival, Rituparno Ghosh’s The Last Lear was screened to packed audiences including the media, and it was none other than super star, Amitabh Bachchan who graced the occasion along with his producer. Rituparno Ghosh, the director of The Last Lear could not attend the screening because his father was not keeping well in India. Firstly, Big B answered the questions asked by the media and then saw his first English film from start to finish only coming on the stage for the one last time to reveal an answer of a question asked by one of the members sitting in the audience. In front of hundreds of people Amitabh Bachchan said that he will be a part of Vishal Bhardwaj’s trilogy of Shakespearean inspired film and this time the maverick director is to cast Big B in the lead role from an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s King Lear. He also added that the film will be out in 2008 and the script is currently being worked on and will get over by the end of this year.

Read this space tomorrow to know more on what Amitabh Bachchan had to say about his role in The Last Lear at the Times BFI’s 51st London Film Festival

This would be crazy, if it happens! :-) Being an SRK fanmyself, I don’t think this is good idea!

SRK inching towards Deewar remake?

There have been consistent rumours about Shah Rukh Khan wanting to star in the remake of the alltime Bachchan classic Deewar. For a long time now, the industry has been abuzz with reports of King Khan supposedly approaching Yash Chopra (the director of the original) with the idea. And he is urging the veteran to direct the remake as well. But now, apparently, SRK has also lined up a stellar cast for the same.

Sources say he has proposed Saif and Kareena’s name for Shashi Kapoor and Neetu Singh’s roles respectively and Boman Irani’s name for the character Iftekhar played. Shefali Shah who did a pretty good job playing the eternal suffering mother in Gandhi My Father will step into Nirupa Roy’s tattered chappals.

Don’t see hopes for CDI but Dharm might surprise!

Eklavya’s selection for the Oscars certainly has ruffled a lot of feathers, however, it’s learnt that the latest entrant to join the Oscar race is ‘Chak De’.

The selection committee, meanwhile, is all set to hold a closed door meeting on Tuesday (Oct 16) to ponder over the decision of selecting the final movie — ‘Dharm, Eklavya and Chak De’ — which it has to reconfirm to Oscar authorities by Wednesday (Oct 17).

While the committee is having a tough time to make a final decision and dealing with the clash of ego’s, the twist in the tale has come in the form of Karan Johar’s latest controversial statement, which  could add fuel to fire.

In a recent statement, Karan Johar said:”I think ‘Chak De’ is one of the best movies that I have seen in the recent times and I would recommend it for any platform, be it the Oscars etc.”

SRK walks out of Raju Hirani’s next after Chopra writes a letter accusing him of stealing ‘his director’

Midday

Raj Kumar Hirani’s next film with Shah Rukh Khan (to be produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra) appears to have stopped in its tracks, but it’s not because SRK is upset about Chopra’s tirade against Paheli. Says a source, “Shah Rukh is upset because Chopra sent him a nasty letter accusing him of trying to steal ‘his director’ (Hirani) for his own production house!”

Brilliant Review of a Brilliant Film!
Raja Sen Reviews Johnny Gaddar after a week of it’s release!

The colour of passion. The colour of blood. The colour of treachery.

Red almost never fills the entire frame in Johnny Gaddaar, but the colour is used to sensational effect all across the periphery — beanbags, shirts, blankets covering sitars, mid-burger slices of tomato — constantly highlighted and meticulously framed by persistently duller colours around it.

It’s not black and white or made largely on a computer, but the superlative way director Sriram Raghavan dabs the Red onto this film begs comparison with a totally different world of vitally discoloured noir: Robert Rodriguez’ Sin City. Take a bow, cinematographer CK Muraleedharan, masterfully executed.

Shah Rukh Khan may not do Raju Hirani’s next. Is it because of the scathing remarks that producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra made on Paheli?

When Raju Hirani wrote Munnabhai MBBS, Shah Rukh Khan was his first choice for the role, but due to some reason, SRK did not do the role.

With Sanjay Dutt’s future still in a flux, Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra kept the third part of the Munnabhai series aside and moved on to finalise SRK for their next, based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel Five Point Someone. But the latest buzz doing the rounds is that SRK is not doing this Hirani project either.

The grapevine is that Khan is upset with Vidhu Vinod’s unsavoury remarks against Paheli in the recent past (after his Eklavya was criticised for being India’s official entry to the Oscars) and is reluctant to do a film with him. Vidhu Vinod had taken a dig at Paheli, saying that he had made no noise when Paheli was sent to the Oscars- thereby clearly hinting that the SRK starrer Paheli did not deserve the honour.

When contacted, SRK tells us, “I am not upset with Vidhu’s comment on Paheli. I have no problems with anybody talking about films I do or make.”

Verdict: Four on five
Om Shanti Om
Music directors: Vishal-Shekhar
Music label: T-Series

When we speak of tradition, we often think of it as an indistinguishable lump of past, which has nothing to do with the present or future. But come to think of it one realises how important any tradition is in shaping the sensibilities of the present. Farah Khan of all people should know this. Unlike most of her contemporaries, she’s a director who has grown up on typical masala Bollywood films and belongs to that tradition of filmmaking. And her unapologetic attitude towards this tradition is reflected in her work. At times she looks back at tradition and laughs at it, but all in good spirit. The music of her film appropriately reflects her position. And it is for this ‘retrospective’, that the film’s music deserves to be applauded.

Vishal-Shekhar (of whom Vishal has been a hardcore rocker) too have very beautifully adapted their music to suit her sensibilities. The thing with Om Shanti Om’s music is that it’s rooted in a tradition of filmmaking that is often rejected by the highbrow intellectuals. So if you are looking for some music that you can sit back and listen to on a quiet Sunday evening, this is certainly not it. And in that sense, a critical dissection of the album is also an exercise in futility.

Let’s just say then that not very often does one come across a music track like Om Shanti Om which makes you laugh, cry and dance. It’s the kind of music that needs to be felt and not just heard. Please don’t mistake this for an impulsive gush. But for someone whose staple diet has been Hindi film music, one cannot help but smile at the cheeky ingenuity.

Moitra to compose for Raju Hirani’s SRK film
Businessofcinema.com
MUMBAI: Music director Shantanu Moitra has been roped in as the music director for Munnabhai series director Rajkumar Hirani’s next film starring Shah Rukh Khan.

Moitra upcoming releases for which he has provided the compositions are Yash Raj Films’ next Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag and Sudhir Mishra’s Khoya Khoya Chand.

Speaking to Businessofcinema.com, Moitra says, “Though we’ve not yet locked in the kind of music we will be settling in for Rajkumar’s next, the only thing that’s final is that it will be very youth centric. Moreover, I have never done anything on those lines before. My music is very classical and if the story demands, it has a modern twist. However, I don’t plan to compose disco songs.”

He believes Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag has a good blend of every sort. “Some songs have got the lounge and retro feel, while the others have the classical touch. We have tried to create those complex tones in one of the songs, which are rarely used,” states Moitra.

Good read!

Meena Iyer, Times.

It is important to all of us that some men are insane. It is the abnormal who usually help us understand the universe, who give us technology that changes our lives, and who make films that leave us moved. Ram Gopal Varma’s madness benefited us for long. He had the courage to make films that went beyond karwa chauth. It was a fortune that he existed in the same world that was inhabited by Yash Chopra and Karan Johar. He made films that did not have songs. He made films about criminals whom we covertly loved. And about ghosts and struggling girls. In a way, that was his formula. And it was a formula that worked. But, even before Aag, he made films that were so stupid that one did not understand how a man who could be so brilliant sometimes could also be so terrible at other times.

It is natural for artistes to fail from time to time but they fail with grace, with stature. When Varma fails, he makes a fool of himself. That’s what makes it so difficult to understand him. But it is worth trying.

“He over-simplified the cops and robbers game,” says Pritish Nandy. “But there was no doubt that he was one of the finest film-makers of a specific genre. Now he doesn’t know whether he should follow the path of a Raj Kapoor or Guru Dutt whose entire lives were driven by their single-mindedness for cinema. Or whether to cop out and make factory products as most film-makers today are doing.”

Chak De India 4 Super strong all over and emerges 2nd blockbuster of the year. The 4th week business is approx 7 crore nett. BLOCKBUSTER
Ram Gopal Ki Verma Ki Aag 1 The film is extremely poor in first week and with an expected 95% crash in week 2 it will beat the likes of Deedar-E-Yaar, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja and Umrao Jaan(2006) to become the grandmother of all disasters. Simply put the original Sholay was the biggest hit ever and its remake is the biggest flop ever.
Heyy Babyy 2 Heyy Babyy has sustained very well in week two with approx 14 crore nett business and is a certain superhit and has a chance of becoming a blockbuster. Best business is in Mumbai, Delhi/UP and East Punjab.

2)Heyy Babyy :This film remains at number two position
3)Dhamaal: This film got a good opening but received a mixed reaction
4)Partner: Partner drops to number four but still going strong
5)Darling: Got a decent opening on the first day, but chances of its doing well are less

Rajnikant will be seen paying homage to reigning Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and yesteryear stars Shammi Kapoor and Dev Anand in his Hindi dubbed version of Sivaji.

A special song set to tune by A.R. Rahman will be picturised on Rajnikant in a Chennai studio which features the south superstar donning exact looks of the three stars.

Our sources inform us, “As Sivaji is being dubbed into Hindi a lot of changes are being made to adapt it to Hindi cine fans’ sensibilities. This special song is a part of it. It will feature Rajnikant in a song trying to woo the film’s heroine, Shriya (Awarapan) in three various avtaars.”

Chris Cooper plays supporting role to John Abraham
    By Subhash K. Jha Sep 3, 2007, 13:48 GMT

Mumbai, Sep 3 (IANS) So far Indian actors, whether it was Shabana Azmi in ‘The Revenge Of The Pink Panther’ or Kabir Bedi in ‘Octopussy’, had to be content playing secondary parts in Hollywood films. But things have changed now and Hollywood no more thinks of Bollywood as third world entertainment.

Proof of this lies in the fact that Deepa Mehta’s ‘Luna’, which has been postponed from winter this year to spring 2008, will star our own John Abraham along with Hollywood biggies Rachel Weisz and Dustin Hoffman.

The latest Hollywood stalwart to join the ‘Luna’ cast is Chris Cooper, the Oscar-winning actor from ‘Adaptation’, who was also seen at his brilliant best in ‘American Beauty’, ‘Syriana’ and ‘Sea Biscuit’.

‘Chris is an actor I’ve admired for years,’ Mehta told IANS.

Sholay was a classic, Aag is a catastrophe. Sholay was a watershed, Aag is a washout. For more reasons not to watch this Factory farce, read on…
    PRATIM D. GUPTA

    1. Ram Gopal Varma: After one of his many debacles somebody had registered a title called Ramu Ban Gaya Pagal. Don’t be surprised if after Aag, someone makes a film called Ramu Must Die. To put it politely, the man has lost it — whatever he had left that is. You may remake your own Shiva, you may remake your own Satya and call it different names like Company and D, you may even make a wimp of a Godfather but what you DO NOT do Mr RGV is massacre Sholay like this. Forget aag, there’s not even dhuan. Laughable caricatures cannot breathe life into the remake of a classic, whose storyline you follow to the minutest detail but claim not to give a damn about its storyline. Ramu ko ek hi aadmi ne khatam kiya hai: khud Ramu.

    2. Amitabh Bachchan: ‘Introducing Amitabh Bachchan as Babban’ screamed the opening credits. The closing credits should have read: ‘Finishing Amitabh Bachchan with Babban’. Backing a director is something but supporting his nonsensical vision blindly is unpardonable. And if indeed Amitabh’s wish to play Gabbar had given birth to Aag, he’s been burnt by that wish. As the only common link — besides a cameo by Sachin — between the two Sholays and as RGV’s USP, AB is a disaster. He hasn’t hammed this bad — even in Jaadugar. Forget fear, all he can draw from the audience is ridicule. The new Gabbar is one bad joke that goes on and on and on. He hisses, he growls, rolls his tongue, picks his nose, does the Aks laugh, the Agneepath voice, the Black walk… Bachchan as Babban is unwatchable. If for nothing else, give Aag a miss if you have ever liked Amitabh Bachchan on screen.

    3. Ajay Devgan: Ajay’s attempt at provoking belly laughter is laughable. Nowhere in sight is the infectious innocence of Dharmendra or his rustic charm. All we get here is a streetsmart goonda trying to crack PJs aplenty. Heero manages to murder almost each and every classic Veeru episode but what he does to the famous tank scene has to be seen to be believed. It is probably the worst moment of Aag — and believe us there are many contenders to that crown — and chakki pissing in jail seems a better option than watching a drunk Ajay in action.

    September 2nd, 2007

CNN-IBN: There is no beating around the bush when it comes to the verdict on Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.

“It’s the worst film I have seen in my entire life,” says a moviegoer outside a Delhi theater.

To start with, the rustic locales of Ramgarh which gave a sense of realism to the setting of the 1975 blockbuster has now been transported into suburban Mumbai with most of the film shot on film sets with artificial lighting – stylish but still leaves one feeling claustrophobic.

Though, the storyline of director Ram Gopal Varma’s film is a spin-off of the original, the lack of characterisation proves to be the jarring difference between the classic and this forgettable flick.
