Mumbai: Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar may have ridiculed Prabhakar Deshmukh, the farmer from Solapur district who had been protesting for two months asking the state government to release water into the Ujani Dam, but the Bombay High Court seems to have agreed with him.
While hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) yesterday, the court ordered the Maharashtra government to release water into the dam within 24 hours. The dam supplies water to Solapur, one of the worst drought-hit districts in the western region of the state.
At a rally last week, Mr Pawar dismissed the farmer’s two-month-long protest and sarcastically asked if leaders should urinate to supply water to the dam. “There is this person from Solapur, sitting on hunger strike for 64 days demanding water be released from the dam. But where are we going to get water from? Should we urinate? And when we don’t have water to drink, it’s hard to pass urine as well,” he said.
After facing severe criticism for his crass remarks, the politician said it was the “biggest mistake of my political life.”

First quarter of 2013 for bollywood has been extremely low point in recent years. Unlike earlier recent years many biggies are released in the first quarter of 2013 and most of them bite the dust in the process. What is more astonishing that no film went to become major hit such as Super Hit or Blockbuster in this time period. Only 5 films saved performed reasonably well in this time frame.
Race 2 is the saving garce of 2013 till now and went to register the first big hit in 2013. It is the only film to cross 100 crore nett mark in 2013. Few in trade suggested that in few places distributor and sub-distributor who brought the rights for high price have entitled losses from the film. Kai Po Che, ABCD and Jolly LLB are the surprise Hit of the year with literally everyone involved with the film made good profits. Special 26 another big release of the year just managed to attain Semi Hit status at the box office.
But the biggest disappointment of the year is Himmatwala without a doubt. Before release film was certain to cross 100 crore nett barrier as per trade. Even the director of the film Sajid Khan was touting it as next 150 crore film. But all claim of him fallen flat and film is struggling now to touch 50 crore nett in its lifetime. If the film fails to cross 50-55 crore nett mark in its lifetime it can easily be said biggest disaster of the year, forget about flop status. Below are the verdicts of some major bollywood films released in the first quarter of 2013.
Major Film Released in First Quarter of 2013 and their verdicts –
Box Office battle this Eid is hotting up with each passing day. When makers of Chennai Express asked theater owners for bulk booking of screens for Chennai Express for Eid with Himmatwala, at that moment it was clear that Shahrukh …
Nikhil Advani is all set to make his foray into Marathi films with LOKMANYA, a Marathi full length feature film, to be directed by first time director Om Raut. As is evident the film is based on the life of the great freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak. The script has been extensively researched and received direct validation from Dr. Deepak Tilak, Vice-Chancellor of the Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth. He is also the great grandson of Lokmanya himself and an expert on Lokanya’s fundamentals and visions. What makes this collaboration even more special is that Om Raut is being mentored directly by his producer Nikhil Advani.
Says Nikhil Advani “LOKMANYA is a film that aspires to bring to the foreground one of our nation’s greatest leaders whose teachings and ways make for relevant inspiration even today. This is what appealed to me most, when Om brought the project to my production company. In addition, as we celebrate 100 years of cinema in our country, the genesis of this is incomplete without acknowledging the contribution of Marathi artists, cinema visionaries. For us as a company, we believe bringing Marathi cinema closer into the fold of Bollywood will only create better value for us as an industry and of course for our audiences.”
Says Om Raut, “I knew I was developing something very special when I started working on the script of LOKMANYA. What has raised the bar for me is the opportunity to work closely with Nikhil. He has empowered my vision without compromising my individuality as a budding film-maker.
LOKMANYA starts filming on May 15, 2013 and stars the critically appreciated Subodh Bhave in the title role. The film has music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, a first for Marathi cinema. The film is slated for release end 2013.
NEW DELHI: The number of foreign women tourists visiting India has dropped by 35 percent in the past three months following a spate of sex attacks that have made global headlines, a new survey has found.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) says overall tourist arrivals are down 25 percent year-on-year, with holiday makers opting instead to visit other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Thailand.
The fatal gang rape of a 23-year-old Indian student by six men on a bus in New Delhi in December sparked outrage over the country’s treatment of women, and since then there have also been other widely reported attacks.
A Swiss cyclist was gang-raped in Madhya Pradesh last month, while a South Korean tourist was allegedly drugged and raped in the same state in January by the son of the owner of a hotel where she was staying.
Ekulti Ek – Marathi movie – Launch movie of Sachin Pilgaonkar’s daughter.
The gloves are off. The two runaway marines have pitted India against Italy and the opposition against the government. The Prime Minister himself chose to speak on behalf of his government. He declared Italy had violated every rule of diplomatic discourse. The Kerala Chief Minister, Oommen Chandy, also met the Prime Minister and made the right noises for his constituency.
Italy has defended its action. For now at least, it has ruled out the marines’ return. Italy’s ambassador, the man under fire for facilitating the marines’ one-way trip to Italy, explained why they chose to submit to an international court. “The issue of affidavit is not separate from the issue of several proposals made to the Indian government. They are part of the same process,” Daniele Mancini said.
But Italy’s defence has few takers. Even Harish Salve, who fought the case on Italy’s behalf in Supreme Court, trashed the country’s stand. “I consider this action of the Republic of Italy as a breach of faith. The Indian judicial system has been betrayed,” he said in a statement.
Now here comes a team of sorts! The three stalwarts of the Hindi Film industry – ace actor Salman Khan, ace director Rohit Shetty and ace producer Karan Johar, who are known for their respective work and individual standing, will be seen together. Well, if the latest buzz in the trade is to be believed than the three brands will be merging together for a film!
It is being said that Salman will play the lead role in Rohit Shetty’s next directorial venture under Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. While it is known that Rohit and Karan had join hands for a film long before, talks between Karan and Salman are in the final stages. However, the official detail announcement will be made soon.
If it materializes, Kjo’s desire to work with Salman Khan in a full-fledged feature film will be fulfilled.
Since Shahrukh was a close pal of Kjo and he is also working with Rohit Shetty in a film CHENNAI EXPRESS, wonder what would be his reaction!
The screening saw director Kabir Khan in attendance along with eminent personalities such as the Vice Commissioner for International Affairs, Japan National Tourism Organization - Mr. Kato Takashi, Indian Ambassador to Japan - Ms. Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa and renowned Japanese actress - Sugimoto Aya.
The movie renamed in Japan as Tiger-The Legendary Spy won applause from the 300 strong Japanese and Indian viewers who were present at the event and it was clear that Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif and the tunes of the popular song Mashallah had won the audiences’ heart!
“I am really happy that my film Ek Tha Tiger which released in about 40 countries around the world very successfully is now coming to Japan and it’s the first mainstream release for a Hindi Film that is happening in Japan. I am really excited to be here,” Kabir Khan said.
Filmmaker Sajid Khan, who is all set to recreate the 1980s magic with his Himmatwala remake, clarified at a recent media interaction that the film is not a spoof and would see Ajay Devgn fighting with a tiger for the second time after Vijaypath.
Ajay says this is his second stint with a big cat. However, this time he did it with proper safety measures.
“This is the second time I have fought a tiger in life after Vijaypath. We took complete safety precautions. And now it is much more easier to do such scenes. In Vijaypath when I fought a tiger, there was no safety. Him and me in the cage, and fighting,” said Ajay Devgn.
Director Sajid said that on the sets of Himmatwala, the tiger became so friendly with Ajay “that he was freely moving on the sets”
There has been abundant talks about Salman Khan’s untitled next film, that will be directed by Sohail Khan. Salman, whose last film Dabangg 2 set skyrocketing standards in Bollywood, is awaited with another fascinating film soon.
As per our sources, Sohail has recently placed out the entire shooting schedule of the film, that has been reportedly titled as Mental.
Salman Khan will be paired opposite the Southern bombshell Daisy. Also making a debut in the film will be action director Vijayan’s son Sabarresh.
With a whole bunch of new stars lined up, it will be exciting to see Salman sport on a new avatar in this film. The film’s schedule begins tomorrow and will be shot extensively in Dubai.
Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan, who have been bitter rivals for a while now, might take their professional competition to a new level this Eid. Salman Khan who has been the star of every Eid for the last three years consecutively giving magnanimously entertaining hits every single year might have a face off with SRK’s film Chennai Express this year.
Though many sources also state that this report is entirely fabricated by the flimsy Page 3 websites and actually Salman’s untitled next venture has high possibilities of not getting wrapped by Eid this year. Logically, this fact wouldn’t make sense after Salman’s Eid Hits like Dabangg, Ek Tha Tiger, Bodyguard and Wanted creating almost an essential Bollywood norm.
However, SRK has decided to keep up his rival’s norm this year by presenting an apt Eidi to his fans with Rohit Shetty’s Chennai Express. While SRK loyalists weren’t heavily impressed by his last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Chennai Express shall hopefully do him greater good and help him cash in on Salman’s Eid films trends which catapulted him to tremendous success.
SRK will have to fight it off with Sunny Deol at the box office this Eid. Sunny and SRK, who worked together in the blockbuster hit film Darr, shall see their films Chennai Express and Singh Saheb The Great pitted against each other. Like always, Bollywood will ensure its audiences a delicious Eid this year.
The new dimension given to the Indian Box Office is the concept of the tantalizing and magnanimous “100 Crore Club” which is now sought as the most esteemed and prestigious benchmark for the films bombarding at the Indian Box Office. And the race is on to make it to the tableau at the fastest pace.
Even though Khiladi Kumar is a superstar not missing out from the league in which Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn fall, yet it seems that Akshay Kumar is having tough times in keeping the exclusive membership of the 100 crore club in the active phase. Akshay started 2012 with a bang, with Housefull 2 grossing 114 crores. Following this was Rowdy Rathore which collected 131 crores in 11 days, which created ripples in the tinsel town brand camps.
But Akshay’s last two flicks Khiladi 786 and OMG Oh My God! collected around 70 crores and 81 crores respectively at the box-office; though OMG Oh My God! was more of a Paresh Rawal flick rather being Akshay’s, yet it missed the 100 crore waypost despite the affirmative reviews and strong storyline. Khiladi 786 was an entertainer yet the milestone was not surpassed and it was labeled an average fare. De novo, we see Special Chabbis (26) which has withstood a slow start and is lingering on after being compassed upon hearsay and parol, seems to breeze through at the box office. The movie is still running in cinemas but has received setbacks of late, reason being the release of Kai Po Che!, which is going real strong at the B.O and garnering attention hence in turn sidelining Special Chabbis (26).
But if we look at the bigger picture we can paint that others of the likes Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir and Ajay deliver a 100 crore flick as a piece of cake and with full ease without much ado. But such is not the case with Akshay.
New Delhi: Afzal Guru, convicted for his role in the attack on Parliament in December 2001, was executed at 8 this morning and has been buried at Delhi’s Tihar Jail.
Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said his ministry had recommended to President Pranab Mukherjee on January 21 that Guru be executed. The President, he said, rejected the convict’s mercy petition on February 3, and the date and time for hanging Guru was decided yesterday in consultation with officials at Tihar Jail.
Guru’s execution was conducted in secrecy, just like the hanging in November last year of Pakistani terrorirst Ajmal Kasab, the lone gunman caught alive during the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai.
NEW DELHI — In Indian Kashmir, an all-girl rock band has called it quits after a Muslim cleric issued a fatwa calling on them to disband. Assurances of protection from the state government apparently failed to reassure the teenage girls.
The three high school girls had enthusiastically formed the rock band after winning an annual music contest held in the Kashmiri capital, Srinagar, in December. They called it “Praagaash”, which means from darkness to light. It was the Muslim majority state’s first all-girl music band.
But, it folded up a day after the chief Muslim cleric in Jammu and Kashmir, Bashiruddin Ahmad, said singing is un-Islamic and issued a fatwa calling for them to disband. His edict followed an online campaign of threats and hate messages targeting the teenage girls.
Amid the outcry which followed, the state’s chief minister, Omar Abdullah, extended assurances of police protection to the girls and hoped they would not allow a handful of “morons” to silence their music.
Kanpur: In what can be clearly termed as gross negligence on part of the Kanpur zoo authorities, around 31 blackbucks were killed by stray dogs on Sunday. It was not known how the dogs managed to enter the zoo. The authorities claimed they were investigating the incident. While only seven blackbucks are left after the attack, there has been no word on action against the zoo staff, except for three security guards who were suspended for dereliction of duty.
The blackbucks are endangered animals, and they are kept in highly secured facilities.
Kanpur Zoo director K Praveen Rao said that during the morning inspection, 31 blackbucks were found dead with some stray dogs still eating from their remains despite the presence of barbed wires around it.
The dogs were immediately chased out and two of them were shot dead in the process by the guards.
UNE: The Union government on Thursday said it will give immediate approval to the Pune metro project and make subsequent allocation of funds in the budget. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been told to prepare a detailed project report on mono rail.
Pune MPs, corporators and civic officials met Union Urban Development minister Kamal Nath and agriculture minister Sharad Pawar in New Delhi on Thursday. It was emphasized that the PMC should set up a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for executing the metro project and that it should work in tandem with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). It was also stressed that a deadline be set for completion of the project.
“Kamal Nath asked the PMC to take steps to establish a special purpose vehicle and also asked to prepare the detailed project report for the mono rail. He asked for integration of metro, mono rail and BRTS project in the city,” said mayor Vaishali Bankar in an official press release. Bankar, who was present for the meeting, said that discussions were “positive” and actual work on metro project is likely to start within six months. Pimpri Chinchwad mayor Mohini Lande said the Centre has asked the PMC and the PCMC to work in tandem.
MP Suresh Kalmadi told TOI, “We insist the Union government make a concrete budgetary provision for the Pune metro in its annual budget. Once the budgetary provision is made, the state and the PMC will contribute their share and metro will become a reality. We demanded that as other cities have got their approval without any delay, the Centre should not sit on Pune’s metro project.”
India has long had a love affair with gold. But one businessman there is so infatuated with the precious metal, he dropped about $230,000 on solid gold shirt.
More than two dozen goldsmiths toiled for 15 days for lender Datta Phuge, who custom ordered the seven-pound top to wear for New Year’s festivities, according to the Pune Mirror. The shirt is crafted from 14,000 22-karat gold rings linked together and comes with six Swarovski crystal buttons and a belt also made of gold.
Phuge said he considers the shirt “an investment which will keep appreciating.”
