Will Someone Topple Salman Khan in 2013 or he will again have the last laugh?

April 25, 2013 | 54

Box Office India is going through a lean phase in 2013, if we consider the first 4 months of the year. Himmatwala was the biggest disappointment of the year, whereas Special 26 didn’t lived upto its reputation. What’s more only Race 2 has emerged as the lone 100 crore film in 2013. Last year Bollywood saw as many as 9 films make it to the 100 crore club, with Ek Tha Tiger nearing the 200 crore nett mark. After that all positivity 2013 looks extremely low atleast for the time being.

We had a talk with few exhibitors and theater owners, they are right now little down, but not completely out. While talking to one of the dear exhibitor friend, he told us this important aspect that in 2011 (Ready, Bodyguard) and in 2012 (Ek Tha Tiger, Dabangg 2) there were two films of Salman Khan each year and coincidentally they were the top grossers of respective years. But in 2013 there may not be a single release of him. Yes, Mental shooting is going on and is delayed due to varied reasons and now looks 50-50 for 2013. Although makers are trying hard to have it release somewhere in November 2013. With lull going at the box office, a Salman starrer would have been Sanjeevani for distributors and exhibitors.

Now let’s forget about Mental. Main bone of contention is whether a Aamir Khan, Shahrukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar or any other starrer film can topple Salman Khan starrer film or not. With all due respect to Sallu fans, wouldn’t it been exciting to see a change at top after 3 years. We have some of the biggest release in 2013 in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Ranbir Kapoor starrer), Chennai Express (Shahrukh Khan starrer), OUATIM 2 (Akshay Kumar starrer), Boss (Akshay Kumar starrer), Krrish 3 (Hrithik Roshan starrer), Dhoom 3 (Aamir Khan starrer). Satyagrah is a multistarrer with Ajay Devgn in it and may have an outside chance. Even if Salman gets his single release in Mental this year, still we think other mega stars have a big chance in to be at the top in 2013.

Shahrukh Khan’s Chennai Express is a masala entertainer and is having every ingredient to be the top grosser of the year. It has all to be hit with masses and classes, what it needs is a good content. Next Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 is also having great buzz and might be the biggest bet to be the top grosser of the year. Hrithik Roshan is also coming after a long gap with Krrish 3. Krrish was a big hit last time and makers of the film is expecting Krrish 3 will go one step further this time. There are some other releases as mentioned above, but frankly all are outsiders for the top rank.

IRON MAN 3 Movie Review

April 24, 2013 |

Iron Man 3 is pretty unique in blockbuster terms. The film is not only a direct follow-up to Iron Man 2 but it also plays as a pseudo-sequel to The Avengers, with Tony Stark explaining that “Nothing has been the same since New York.”

And it’s a very different Stark that we meet in this movie. Not the arrogant playboy philanthropist that we’ve come to know and love over the course of three films, but rather a shadow of that guy, struggling to deal with the fact that he has encountered ‘gods’, aliens and a Hulk, and plagued by nightmares, anxiety and post-traumatic stress.

His situation quickly worsens as, via voiceover and flashback, we are transported to Berne, Switzerland on millennium eve, a night when Tony unwittingly created demons that more than a decade on would come back to haunt him.

Himmatwala ‘The Great Fall’ of Box Office.

April 21, 2013 | 4

Himmatwala has achieved one of the biggest fall in collections in recent times. One have to scratch the head to remember such big fall. Yes there are other big disappointments in recent years, but atleast they have fared badly from the first day itself or had a fall after the first weekend. But in Himmatwala case it is having great fall each week. It registered a drop of around 85% in Second week. It further registered a gigantic drop of around 93% in third week.

Because of such big fall it has assured that it will not even touch the 50 crore nett mark at the box office in its lifetime. After the end of first week Himmatwala collected 41+ crore nett and everyone was atleast hoping of it crossing 50 crore nett mark. But Alas!

There is nothing to talk about such hyped film who has recorded colossal losses for all. It will collect around 24 crore distributor share at most and it will be interesting to see how they will share among them this amount.

Since, Himmatwala is excluded from Ajay Devgn’s Star Network deal, it will be interesting to further note that whether TV network will pay the pre-announced amount or they will have a case to raise.

Aashiqui 2 Music Review

April 4, 2013 | 13

What I Expected? : With Mithoon coming back with a bang and Jeet Ganguly confident after a very good 2012, nothing but the best romantic album of the year!

Tum Hi Ho is painfully romantic, the slow, zealous tune riding high on Arjit Singh‘s somber, emotional singing! The duet version withPalak Muchal‘s added vocals is as serene! #MustHear #Repeat

Sun Raha Hai is beautiful, the Pakistani pop-rock sound enhanced greatly by Ankit Tiwari‘s good and controlled singing! Great hear!

Murder 3 Music Review

February 10, 2013 |
Cast- Randeep Hooda, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sara Loren;
Music Director- Pritam, Mustafa Zahid;
Lyricist- Sayeed Quadri & Mustafa Zahid
It’s the third installment in the Murder series, also Emraan Hashmi, who ruled the Murder franchise, was replaced by Randeep Hooda in Murder 3. Bhatt-camp always brings superhit soundtracks, and music of Murder series may be considered as landmark. Murder(2004) brought Anu Malik’s unforgettable compositions “Bheege Hont”, “Kaho Na Kaho”, and “Zindagi Iss Tarah”, while Murder 2(2011) brought a number of new but talented composers, with chartbuster tracks “Haal-E-Dil”, “Aye Khuda”, & “Phir Mohabbat”. Soundtrack of Murder 3 is composed by the melody king Pritam, and very talented Pakistani Singer/Composer Mustafa Zahid, Sayeed Quadri penned very delectable and expressive lyrics for the album. The album followed a well-turned release strategy, by releasing one song per week. As we know Pritam surely deems the youth craving & depicture it with proper poise, It’s a lustrous blend of canorous, appealing, and placid tracks.

Salman Khan 500 crore Deal with Star India

January 19, 2013 | 4
Here is a latest big news update on Salman Khan. It is come to known that Salman Khan inks INR 500 crore deal with Star India. This is the biggest and unique Satellite deal with a TV Channel in India till now.

Just before the credits roll down in his 2009 hit Wanted that features Salman Khan as a cop embedded with the underworld, he delivers the punch line: “Once I commit to something, I won’t even listen to myself”. Well, Rupert Murdoch and his Indian entertainm ent empire are hanging on to those very words as Star India inks a deal with the 47-year-old superstar that will effectively make the channel the only satellite podium for any movie he makes in the next five years.

Khan confirmed the deal, but declined to share details. The deal, estimated to be in the range of Rs 450 crore to Rs 500 crore, is the first of its kind in Bollywood. People close to the actor, who refused to be identified, said the contract will include all his films over the next five years after last month’s Dabangg2. “It is reasonably long and big,” said Star India’s Chief Operating Officer Sanjay Gupta.

Talaash(Ram Sampath) Music review

October 19, 2012 | 5

It could be Suman Sridhar. Or it is perhaps the fairly generic attempt to work within the Mikey McCleary Bartender Mix format, but Muskaanein jhooti hai works seductively well with its retro tune laid out in the bluesy base! Suman Sridhar, of course, weaves magic with her vocals.

In Jee le zaraa, Ram puts Vishal Dadlani’s throaty voice to stunning use and delivers a pensive melody with haunting backgrounds. It sounds almost like Vishal Shekhar’s material, but for the effort that the composer adds in the orchestration.

Best Male Singers in Bollywood: Top 5

October 15, 2012 | 7

The trend of male playback singing has changed quite significantly over the years. Gone are the days when singers were known as the voices of actors on screen. Kishore Kumar for Rajesh Khanna and Dev Anand, Mukesh for Raj Kapoor, Mohd Rafi for Shammi Kapoor, Dharmendra and so on.

It was history when every second Bollywood popular song was sung by either Kumar Sanu or Udit Narayan. With the evolution of internet, the music industry was adversely impacted as the demand for music cassettes or CDs declined drastically.

As a result, music directors are trying out new voices today with huge success. The long race horse is very difficult to determine but there are quite a few who have managed to grab the attention of avid listeners. Quality masters Sonu Nigam and Shaan have understandably become selective about their work. Also we get to hear voices of multi-talented guys like A.R. Rahman, Himesh Reshammiya, Farhan Akhtar, Vishal Dadlani, Adnan Sami, Lucky Ali, Daler Mehandi, Wajid and Shankar Mahadevan mostly in their own albums (movies) only. Atif Aslam, Benny Dayal, Kunal Ganjawala, Shahid Mallya, Shafqat Amanat Ali and Ash King have also been impressive in their outings and have shown a lot of promise.

Here goes my list of the Top 5 singers who are worthy contenders for the most popular male playback voice today:

3 Idiots or Ek Tha Tiger, which is the biggest hit?

September 24, 2012 | 20
A lot of film pundits are burning the midnight oil on the question ‘Which is the biggest Hit at the box office Ek Tha Tiger or 3 Idiots?’ Question is interesting since, 3 Idiots might be the biggest grosser in India and every one will say 3 Idiots is the biggest Hit. But ETT has got the highest returns from theaters and Distributor Share determines film success, rather than Nett Gross.

Generally a film Distributor Share is more when Nett Gross is more. But in case of 3 idiots and ETT its inverse. 3 idiots Nett Gross is more, whereas ETT Distributor Share is more. Reason, ETT performed better in single screens and single screens return is higher than multiplexes where 3 Idiots did better business. Confusing right, we Addatoday Team tried to solve this box office puzzle with a little bit of simple mathematics.
3 idiots ek tha tiger box office 3 Idiots or Ek Tha Tiger, which is the biggest hit?
Ek Tha Tiger (2012) - 198 crore nett (Expected). Distributor Share (Minus Theater Rentals from Nett Gross) is about 113 crores.
