1) Amitabh bachchan (LL):There’s nothing more elevating than watch an actor deliver a challenge, without any compromise, in all his enthused glory. Amitabh Bachchan’s breathtaking transformation into The Last Lear is all that and more.

Playing a mercurial, ageing actor consumed by Shakespeare and a tantalizing imagination, Bachchan’s Harry is eccentric yet fascinating, stern yet child-like, a novel-like personality, a reluctant legend.

To achieve this, AB lends intriguing layers and slender detailing to his part with untiring brilliance, natural candor and exaggerated eloquence. It’s his masterpiece on all counts.

2) Hrithik Roshan (JA):Playing a one of India’s greatest rulers isn’t as easy as it looks. It’s not about adorning rich brocades and ornate kundans.

This is an oft-used phrase to describe the films that we laugh and cry over. And invariably, this description brings to mind a certain kind of cinema – the kind that Danny Boyle is going ga-ga over. Lavish, opulent sets, A-list multi-starcast, a dash of melodrama, tragic moments, comic moments, gripping suspense with lots of dishum-dishum… and of course, half a dozen gyratable songs.

Three-and-a-half hours of packaged entertainment. In fact, Mera Naam Joker, the critically acclaimed and definitive larger-than-life Raj Kapoor film, went on for a full 3 hours 45 minutes.

The Indian cine-crazy audience loves this kind of cinema. Total paisa-vasool is another oft-repeated phrase, used by the audience as they come out of the theatres, to describe such films. “And this has been so since Mother India defined what a film with the right mix of melodrama, masala and action can do to the Indian audience,” says Taran Adarsh, trade analyst, “they love the fact that three hours can give them the maximum possible entertainment. It happens nowhere else in the world. Hollywood films, if stretched, last two-and-a-half hours at max. Three hour long films are totally Indian.”

His name presently comes to number 43 same as Amitabh Bachchan and we all know that Big B also has health issues.

Though Shah Rukh Khan is the craze among Polish youth, it was Ashutosh Gowariker’s epic romance Jodhaa Akbar that charmed cinegoers during a month-long Hindi film festival held across 12 places in Poland, a country that has a surprisingly large number of Bollywood fans.

If the majestic beauty of Jodhaa Akbar, which had Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai in the lead, impressed film buffs, Aparna Sen’s Mr. and Mrs. Iyer also left a deep impression on audiences during the fest called ‘Ticket to Bollywood’.

Jodhaa Akbar gives us a few glimpses of the medieval history of India. All these years we were glued to the beauty of the Taj Mahal alone. Now we can understand the intricacies of a secular experiment of the great Mughal king Akbar,” said Gabellia Krzyzowska, a zealous Indophile.

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan does us proud, again. In a country which is unjustly obsessed with fair skin, Aishwarya recently took a firm stand. She refused to be the Indian face of a skin-lightening cream by a global cosmetic company.

After Aishwraya turned down the offer, the cosmetic company signed Sonam Kapoor to endorse the fairness cream. The cosmetic company is positioning Sonam as a ‘young face’, as opposed to Aishwarya who may now be called the ‘older face’ of the cosmetic industry.

However, a source reveals  that the key factor behind Sonam being the new face has got nothing to do with her age.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan rues the fact that she has to leave many good films because she is mostly spoilt for choice. She adds often some very good films come her way after she has given her dates for a particular project and she has to let them go.

“I get offered some really good films. I’m spoilt for choice and it so happens that when I agree to do a project and block my dates for that. Then some good projects come my way. I unfortunately cannot take up because the dates clash with the ones which I had already allotted to other films. I quite have a history of missing many good films but I have done some very good ones too. That’s a solace,” says Aishwarya.

In the journey from my first international film release three and a half years back, to my eighteenth film five weeks back, the landscape, whilst continuing to exhibit consistency in terms of its behaviour on certain aspects, has concurrently gone through a metamorphosis. While some new territories and rights are emerging, some of the existing ones are dwindling. The result of which is that marketers and distributors must wake up to a new reality every morning. As the profile, behavioral traits and media consumption habits of the movie-going audience abroad is in sharp contrast to that of India, it is hard to assume that what has worked / will work in India, will automatically work abroad and vice versa.

Given the prevailing recession and therefore, the limited disposable incomes, even the audience is becoming increasingly discerning about the kind of films that they want to watch. This coupled with the glut of content in the market, is leading to conventional fare (featuring popular faces) enjoying precedence over new concepts and genres, and propositions that are devoid of face value.

I don’t suppose it’s unfair to say that the international movie business, being more knowledge-intensive, uncertain and eccentric than its Indian counterpart, holds a far greater enchantment and challenge.

The year gone by has witnessed an unfortunate economic downturn consequently hitting admissions in the US. That said, the gradual elimination of sole proprietary ownership of the select exhibition outlets and their take-over by a corporate entity will hopefully result in greater transparency on the reporting of gross figures. In the UK, the sharp depreciation of the pound sterling has been translating into relatively lesser returns than before, though the number of screens that are willing to show tent-pole Bollywood has gone up marginally. In contrast, the Middle East has been rock-steady, robust and lucrative, generating almost equivalent (if not more) revenues than the UK & US.

• Woody Allen’s Matchpoint is said to have inspired Kites. Is that true?
You can first see the film and then decide. Earlier, people also said Gangster (2006) was inspired by Donnie Brasco (1997). Kites is an intensely romantic film.

• How is it working with Hrithik Roshan?
Hrithik and I really enjoyed working together. I always respected him as an actor but now I respect him as a human being too. Hrithik and I made the film honestly, just like we wanted to.

• We have heard that there was trouble with Hrithik’s knee while shooting, true?
Yes. Before every shot I would be worried about Hrithik’s knee. If anything happened to him, then our entire outdoor shooting schedule would’ve gone for a toss. But Hrithik asked me not to compromise the shots under any circumstance. I’m awed by the way he managed, without ever letting the shoot halt. He even did the few action scenes we have in the film himself.

• And how was it directing Barbara Mori?
The day I narrated Kites to her I knew I had chosen the right actress. I’ve this bad habit of narrating very fast. Barbara is a Mexican actress, so she knows no Hindi and little English. But the way she understood my story, hats off to her. Her expressions changed while I was narrating the story. I’ve never seen any actor respond this way. Even though she comes from a different culture, the emotions of love and relationships are the same. Her approach was definitely different, but yes, the result delivered by both, Barbara and Kangana (Ranaut) is the same - brilliant.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s ‘Jodhaa Akbar’ has not only left the Indian and interational audiences mesmerized, but also got Dilip Kumar to become nostalgic. At a private screen of Jodhaa Akbar; this historical saga starring Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan not only enthralled the veteran actor, but also made him feel evoked his memories of Mughal-e-Azam.

Jodhaa Akbar released nearly a year back, yet it still continues to stay afresh in the minds of its audiences. Legendary actor Dilip Kumar says “Ashutosh was very kind to organize a special screening for me of the film. The movie was a delight. I discovered what a versatile actor Hrithik (Roshan) was. The film did remind me of the pains taken to film Mughal-e-Azam. Only directors like K. Asif and Ashutosh who have the patience, confidence and artistry to events and emotional conflicts with sensitivity can bring such historicals to life. Hrithik and Aishwarya played their roles with remarkable maturity and restraint.”

Mumbai, Dec 10: Looks like Bollywood’s light-eyed hunk, Hrithik Roshan has some Hollywood bigwig fan following. The actor was recently visited by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson himself. Now, that’s some pleasant surprise for someone who’s a big time Jacko fan.

Grapevine has it that Hrithik couldn’t believe his eyes when the ‘Pop King’ walked into his caravan in Los Angeles, where he was stationed for the shooting of ‘Kites’, being directed by Anurag Basu.

Hrithik, who was busy decking up for the next shot stood aghast when Jacko walked in his royal style. A source close to the actor revealed, “Hrithik was in his make-up room when Michael’s two bodyguards entered. He was taken aback to see these burly men enter the room. On questioning them, he learnt that they were Michael’s body guards.”

Hrithik who is often seen following the jazzy Jacko moves for most of his dance sequences was shocked on learning the visitors name.

Madhu Mantena, often known as Madhu Varma, producer of Ghajini, talks about his steady relationship with Nandana Sen. He also admits that one would be foolish not to take advantage of Aamir Khan’s expertise while making a film

How did Ghajini happen?
After the premiere of Sarkar, Manmohan Shetty made me an offer to head his overseas operations. After a year of setting up the overseas business, I got a call from Allu Arvind. He told me that he was planning to remake Ghajini in Hindi. Incidentally, I had seen the film just two days before Allu called. I seconded his decision and we decided to produce the film together.

•    How did you get Aamir for Ghajini?
Pradeep Rawat who plays the villain in the original told Aamir about it. Aamir loved the idea and things fell into place.

Priyanka Chopra will play the lead in Jugal Hansraj’s next starring Uday Chopra. A source close to the actress said, “This film will mark Priyanka’s entry into the YRF banner. Rakesh Roshan and Anurag Basu are taking no chances with Hrithik Roshan starrer Kites. They have replaced action director Dick Ziker with Spiro Razatos

Spiro has directed action scenes in Hollywood films like Vantage Point and Bad Boys 2 and is currently working with Sajid Nadiadwala on Kambakht Ishq.

Bollywood blockbuster Jodhaa Akbar is being regarded as a strong contender for this year’s Bafta Awards. The period drama staring Aishwarya Rai and Hrithik Roshan is competing in the Best Foreign Film Category and critics believe it has a very good chance of winning. Not a stranger to winning foreign film awards, Jodhaa Akbar has already won the Audience Award of the Best Foreign Feature Film at the 32nd Sao Paulo International Film Festival in Brazil, and the Grand Prix Award for Best Film and Best Actor at the Golden Minbar Film Festival in Kazan, Russia, but winning a Bafta would definitely be more prestigious.

The Baftas are the British version of the Oscars, and the epic story of Emperor Akbar and his wife Jodhaabai is the first Indian film to compete for a Bafta Award since Rang de Basanti was nominated for ‘Film Not In The English Language’ in 2006. Director Ashutosh Gowariker seems to be making a habit of only producing films which are nominated for top awards.

His previous film Lagaan was nominated for an Oscar in 2001 as Best Foreign Language Film. Jodha Akbar was a huge success in the US, grossing $3.4 million as the second biggest Indian film ever, and more than a £1 million in the UK when it was released in February. Final nominations for the Bafta awards will be announced on 15 January. Winners will be announced at the Bafta Awards on Sunday 8 February, 2009, at the Royal Opera House in London.

On the day Congress asks home minister Shivraj Patil to quit for not performing his duty, chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh goes to inspect the sites of Mumbai’s tragedy accompanied by his actor son and a filmmaker who wanted to make a quickie movie cashing in on the disaster

Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s decision to take along his actor son Riteish Deshmukh and filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma on his first visit inside the Taj and the Trident following Mumbai’s most-recent tragedy, has provoked much outrage (see blogs alongside).
On Sunday, Deshmukh and a high-powered group comprising chief secretary, commissioner of police and others, surveyed the two ravaged hotels where more than a hundred people have lost their lives.

Onlookers were surprised to see Riteish Deshmukh and Ram Gopal Varma accompanying this official delegation.
It now transpires that Varma, known for churning out quickie movies, often based on real-life events, wanted to make a movie on the events of these last four days. He requested the CM’s actor son Riteish, a bit of a fixture in recent RGV films, to go along with the CM.

Says a source present at the Taj during this visit, “Ram Gopal Varma went inside the Taj and did a recce of the hotel that has been reduced to shambles. He scrutinised the shards of broken glasses, heaps of destroyed furniture, blood stains and the bullet marks throughout the hotel.”

The star’s next film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali will be another opulent saga like Devdas, reports Prithwish Ganguly Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who has given the nod to be a part of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s next film, is backing the ace director despite his last movie Saawariya being a box office disaster. The film was also not spared by critics as they panned it heavily and audiences shied away from watching it at the theatres. Ash feels that one failure does not mean that Bhansali should be written off from the Bollywood map as he is one of the best talents the country has ever produced.

Hrithik confirmed this with matter-of-fact directness and said, “We were both supposed to jump off from a rooftop at an impossible height. Before we did so director Anurag Basu suggested that I kiss Barbara since we were doing something death-defying and dangerous.

I kissed her on her cheek to which she turned around to ask, ‘Given the same situation with your wife Susanne would you kiss her on the cheek?’ I was floored by her logic. The scene was reshot and I kissed her the way real-life couples would in the situation.”

Hindi film industry’s fortunes are tied to three major films featuring Shah Rukh Khan , Salman Khan  and Aamir Khan  to be released next month.

December could well turn out to be the crucial month for the Hindi film industry. If Bollywood’s three forthcoming films starring Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and Shah Rukh Khan in Ghajini , Yuvvraaj, and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, respectively, become commercially hit then 2008 may prove to be a good year for the Hindi film industry, especially at the time of the economic slowdown.

A scene from YuvvraajReleasing in December, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is a Yashraj film featuring Shah Rukh Khan and the newcomer Anushka Sharma in the lead roles. Yuvvraaj is a Subhash Ghai  film with Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor , Katrina Kaif  and others while Aamir Khan’s Ghajini is the re-make of a superhit Tamil film.

Surprisingly, despite a poor start at the beginning of this year, so far, 2008 has seen about 8-10 per cent increase in the box-office collections of the top 10 Hindi films compared to those in 2007.

Hrithik Roshan is still riding high on the big success of Ashutosh Gowariker’s JODHAA AKBAR, despite stiff opposition from the genre (historical), politicians and a section of the trade. Waiting impatiently for KITES, the fans of the super choosy actor are keen to know as to whether Hrithik is doing a film with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, as per media reports. Well here is the exact situation.

While Hrithik’s business manager neither confirmed nor denied the news, a very reliable source, quite close to the super star assures us that Roshan junior has indeed signed the film. And before we leave, here is more joy for Duggu fans. The superhero is super excited about the script of the Bhansali film, which he says is his best till date!

MUMBAI: In these days of economic meltdown and Bollywood’s big releases crashing at the box office, film producers looking to seal distribution deals at record prices are finding no takers, say observers. The trade is of the opinion that prices and star salaries have soared to the point of saturation , making a correction inevitable.

Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision’s Blue, which comes with a Rs 150-crore price tag, and Rakesh Roshan’s Kites (sale price pegged at Rs 120 crore) haven’t found ready takers . “These are prices that don’t look recoverable going by the current market. The market may have grown but not enough to generate a recovery of Rs 150 crore on a film, whatever be its merits,” a trade insider said.

Om Shanti Om was acquired at Rs 73 crore last year and Singh Is Kinng clinched a deal of Rs 60 crore. The distributors (Eros International and Indian Film Company-Studio 18, respectively) of the two “event films’ ‘ recovered their investment but it sparked off a trend of relatively smaller titles chasing disproportionate prices.

Two of the biggest projects of 2008, JODHAA AKBAR and SINGH IS KINNG, both of which also turned out to be two major hits of the year, had one thing in common. And that was the handsome actor with a boyish charm and a baritone voice, Sonu Sood. Be it Rajkumar Sujamal of JODHAA AKBAR or King/Lucky of SINGH IS KINNG, the actor held his own against superstars like Hrithik Roshan and Akshay Kumar. Sonu, who was dubbed as wooden by the knowledgeable critics (?) during his earlier days is now having the last laugh!

Not satisfied with the twin triumphs, Sonu seems hell bent on a hat–trick of successes and proving his mettle as a solo hero. We are obviously referring to the masters of low profile sleeper hits, Rajshri Productions and their forthcoming, EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI. The film pairs Sonu with Eesha Koppikar, who has also created a name for herself by her versatile choice of roles.

Releasing worldwide on November 7, EK VIVAAH… AISA BHI looks better by the day and we are positive that it will prove to be the third big hit of the year for Sonu, and a very gratifying one too!

Hrithik Roshan is another actor who has jumped onto the bandwagon of stars who strongly believe in ‘method acting’. They not only change their appearances but also believe in delivering authenticity to the extent that they prefer performing every scene by themselves!

Hrithik who has sported a moustache in Jodhaa Akbar, a tan in Dhoom 2 will now be sporting a beard in Kites! A unit hand of the film revealed, “Hrithik will have a thin moustache and beard in Kites. The actor is looking as great as ever in the look. He has also lost weight to look fitter. He also insists on performing all the stunts by himself.”

If rumours are to be believed the film is based on Hollywood film ‘Match Point’. The film has been film mostly shot in Mexico and Las Vegas and has Kangana Ranaut and Barbara Mori as Hrithik’s co-stars…
