Salman Khan exempted from court appearance 83 times in 10 years

January 3, 2013 |

From all the public appearances that are lined up on his busy diary of commitments, Bollywood superstar and accused in a 2002 hit-and-run case Salman Khan has been let off from the kind that is least expected – those that require his presence at the court of law.

A court document obtained by Mid-day has revealed that the actor has been exempted his court appearance a whopping 83 times in the past decade. On December 26, Mid-Day reported how the Bandra police had failed to serve him the court summons, even though he was spotted in the same week at a high-profile party and shooting in Mehboob Studios. He has also been reporting to work on the sets of his TV show.

Subsequently, Salman was exempted from the court appearance on December 27, which happened to be his 47th birthday. The actor’s sisters Alvira and Arpita, and his lawyer Dipesh Mehta appeared at the Bandra court on behalf of the birthday boy.

The shocking court statistics came to light in a court petition filed by Santosh Daundkar asking about the inordinate delay in the case proceedings. The petition says, ‘The Salman hit-and-run case happened in 2002 but the trial in this case is still far to end, even though more than 10 years have elapsed and 90 court hearings have taken place’.

‘Satyamev Jayate’ vs ‘Talaash’: Should Aamir Khan practise what he preached?

December 12, 2012 | 19

New Delhi: For close to three months Bollywood actor Aamir Khan made Indians squirm with guilt and denial and forced them to face their dark side over a series of well researched and executed social documentaries on rampant social inequalities.

The straight talking, intense host of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ tore apart the moribund traditions that manifested in gender specific selections of foetuses, caste discrimination and abuse of the elderly. He made a nation sit up and take notice of the hypocrisies that its people passed off as convention. He even moved the stone-hearted with stories so grim that they’d make your skin crawl.

All the more reason why ‘Talaash’ was such a letdown because its lead protagonist and social torch bearer compromised the stand he took months ago on showing the uneducated, ill informed, misguided and superstitious Indians the light of reason and rationalism.

Aamir roused in his ‘Satyamev Jayate’ audience a strange sense of patriotism. Of course we knew of the deep rooted corruption that plagued our medical profession. The urban Indians were also vaguely aware of the cruel Khap Panchayats diktats. We weren’t ready to look the evil in the eye until we were made to.

Aamir Khan postponed ‘Dhoom 3’ shooting

December 11, 2012 | 11

Perfectionist Aamir Khan pushed back the ‘Dhoom 3’ shooting schedule due to some reasons. The December and January schedule has been postponed to the end of February 2013. The reason for the delay is said to be Aamir’s perfectionist outlook. The scene requires some dare-devil stunts and Aamir wants some training to get it perfectly right.

A source informed that Aamir needed to rehearse for his action scenes and so the shooting has been pushed back. Another source close to the project says, “The ten-day December schedule from 7th to 17th was postponed because Aamir needed to promote ‘Talaash’.”

However, Yashraj spokesperson gave Aamir the sufficient time he needs for ‘Talaash’ promotion.

Stating that the next schedule of ‘Dhoom 3? would occur “post-Talaash” the YRF spokesperson says, “As a norm we do appreciate an artiste’s unavailability for our project during another film’s promotion and that was built into our schedule.

Why Bollywood is giving such importance to Southern remakes

December 6, 2012 |

New Delhi: Once upon a time films from the south were family socials. Gemini, Prasad and other banners promoted cute products celebrating wholesome family values where virtue always vanquished evil and the good, honest protagonist and the loyal, sacrificing heroine always saw the cruel, conniving baadie off to tra-ta into the unset.

Interestingly, the character actors and actresses were invariably paired off to give it a real feel-good happy ending. They may not have been the no. 1 brand of the movie-goers but they did have a sizable market among the orthodox, conservative, god-fearing constituency, pan-India. It was an innocent time, the 50′s and 60′s, with neither consumerism, globalization nor technology to rain on their parade.

With time that genre faded out and while heroines from the south zoomed into B-town, the traditional fare was replaced by loud, gaudy, over-the-top, dhin-chak offerings with Jumping Jack Jeetu as their triumphant brand ambassador. A super-duper success, these films with the white-shoed hero serenading a gorgeous Jaya Prada or sexy Sridevi and Shakti-Kader’s unleashing toilet humour , tumbled out of the South thick n’ fast and raked in the loot, big time.

Today, as southern material once again invades Bollywood with a huge bang, it is interesting to note the difference. These are not the Sasurals (Teri Pyari Pyari Surat Ko…), Gharanas (Husnwale, tera jawab…) or Hamrahis (Mujko apne gale lagalo…), of yesterdays… sweet, romantic, melodrama nor the Jeetu-driven jhatka stuff but violence driven whammos with vendetta, blood and gore along with populist catch phrases and dialogue-baazi to boot.

December 6, 2012 | 40

The year 2012 has proved to be commercially successful for the Bollywood. For some stars like Salman and Shahrukh it was like any other year but for Ajay and Akshay, it was a much needed boon. Audience loved what they brought and we chose out few stars who have ruled the audience throughout the year.

Salman Khan
Shahrukh Khan
Ranbir Kapoor
Akshay Kumar
Ajay Devgn

Salman Khan: Salman Khan is masses’ favorite and it shows off with the business his movies perform, his brand endorsements, his cameo in SOS for friendship’s sake with Ajay Devgn.

“Ek Tha Tiger” is the highest grosser of the year with 186 crore in the kitty and I don’t see the trend breaking in next three weeks. The movie harnessed so much business that even their old camper- Shahrukh Khan could not get them.

“TALAASH” Heads For Good Day One Numbers

“Talaash” was slow in the morning and except few high end multiplexes, film failed to draw crowds. But as the day progressed almost all multiplexes started doing roaring business though single screens still look bleak.

Film has almost no chance in single screens and even the responses of mass centers are not up to the mark. But mutiplexes are doing business close to 90% and it is better than “Ek Tha Tiger” in properties like Inox Bangalore, Pvr Saket and Ambience Gurgaon. This will ensure the good figure on day one.

While Shahrukh Khan, the star of “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” has moved on to fresh opportunities, the fans and the media are still upbeat about the numbers and the business the movie did. Hence, it’s a moment for SRK fans to rejoice as Boxoffice India reports on Nov. 28, 2012 that “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” is a huge blockbuster overseas. At home, the movie continues to hold its steady revenue.

According to Box office India, “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” becomes the fourth highest grossing film ever in 13 days by grossing $11 million approximately.

With that, it surpasses films like “Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna”, “Om Shanti Om” and much to the relief of ardent fans, Salman’s “Ek Tha Tiger.” The films that exceed in revenues are Aamir Khan’s “Three Idiots” and Shahrukh’s “My Name Is Khan” and “Don 2.”

The approximate available 13-day figures from major markets are as follows:

Will Salman Khan And Akshay Kumar Take A Lead in Koimoi Top 10 India Box Office 2012?

November 29, 2012 | 1

With the year 2012 coming to an end, Koimoi thinks that the entire list of our Koimoi Top 10 Indian Movies 2012 shall be occupied with all the 100 crore club movies. Currently 7 out of 10 movies in the list have already crossed the 100 crore mark and the 8th movie to join the bandwagon will be Son Of Sardaar, which is few crores away from the mark.

Coming to the upcoming releases, we have Akshay Kumar’s Khiladi 786 and Aamir Khan’s Talaash that will surely make good business at the Box Office. Khiladi 786 has created quite a good hype amongst the fans and we believe that the single screens would be the one to lend a helping hand for the film to get a place in the 100 crore club. Hope it doesn’t turn out to be another Joker!

Knowing Mr. Perfectionist Aamir Khan’s penchant for good content in his films, it will be the Multiplexes that will find a way to the 100 crore club for Talaash.

Coming towards the end of December, the Salman Khan starrer Dabangg 2, which is scheduled to release on 21st of the month, will undoubtedly or rather blindly cross 100 crore mark. Salman has ruled the 100 crore club consistently since few years now, and his upcoming film Dabangg 2 will be no exception to it.

Saif was offered Talaash, reveals Kareena

November 29, 2012 |

Newly-wed actor Kareena Kapoor, whose film Talaash, with Aamir Khan and Rani Mukherji releases next week, has revealed that her husband Saif Ali Khan was also offered Talaash.

“Not many know, but Saif too was offered Talaash. Reema (Kagti, director) wanted him in the movie, but his dates didn’t work out. He is really excited that I am part of it,” she says.

About working with Aamir after a gap of three years, Kareena says, “He is a great co-star and a great team player. He makes sure his films turn out well. If I could, I would work in all his films.”

On why Aamir, who goes out of his way to promote his films, has kept an unusually low profile with Talaash, she says, “It’s the first suspense film of its kind and probably that’s why Aamir has not done much to promote it.”

I have finally found a script to direct: Aamir Khan

November 29, 2012 |

New Delhi, Nov. 28 — Actor Aamir Khan who donned the director’s hat with Taare Zameen Par in 2007 is all set to direct again. On a visit to HT house on Tuesday, the filmmaker said that he has locked the script for his next directorial venture.

“There is Dhoom 3 which is coming up, which I’m hoping will be liked by kids. But as far as directing a kids movie is concerned, there is a script that I’ve found about a 13-year-old brother and 10-year-old sister,” he said, adding, “I’ve bought the rights (of the script) and I’m going to direct it. But I don’t know when because I’m very busy as an actor, as of now.”

The actor, whose film Talaash releases on Friday, says that he picked the film because he found it intriguing. “I loved the script. It has a great emotional aspect and is not just a suspense drama. It deals with coming to terms with the loss of a loved one,” he said. While the actor calls both his co-stars in the film Rani Mukerji and Kareena Kapoor fantastic, he is particularly flattered by Rani’s recent remark that while shooting Ghulam with him, she never looked into his eyes as she feared falling in love with him. “Pehle kyun nahi bataya? ab to film poori ho gayi..chance miss ho gaya..ab ek aur film karni padegi,” he laughed, adding, “It’s good to fall in love. I think Rani has absolutely mesmerizing eyes. She is one of my closest friends in the industry for a couple of years now.”

Given that Aamir has always used novel ways to promote his films, (this time around he promoted the film mostly at night), we asked how important is it to promote a film well. “All films need promotions. For me promoting a film is a very integral process of filmmaking. You cannot separate it from the process. Each film is unique and has to be treated differently. ”

Thank Khans for festival box office bonanza!

November 26, 2012 |

Does festival season light up the box office? Yes and no! No, if the movie is anchored by a non-Khan and yes if it is anchored by either Khan. Diwali appears to do the trick consistently for Shah Rukh Khan while Salman takes the cake as always on Eid.

The trend got buttressed this Eid as well with Salman emerging the BO king with his Ek Tha Tiger and Shah Rukh Khan too did not disappoint as his Jab Tak Hai Jaan reaffirmed his lucky date with Diwali. Shah Rukh have had a history of success with Diwali given it is around this festival season (November 2) that he celebrates his birthday.

A quick recap by Zee Research Group (ZRG) of last few years unravels that Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan have always been successful to woo their audiences during the festive seasons.

Baazigar (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Veer-Zaara (2004), Don: The Chase Begins Again (2006) and Om Shanti Om (2007) were all King Khan’s Diwali releases and all of them were box –office hits with movies like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai being considered as cult movies as they were box–office blockbusters.
