Benny’s fabulous in the pensive melody, Tu meri dost; the contoured tune and nuanced orchestration works well. Beyond the instantly catchy facade, Shano is simplistically pop, while the lilting Tu muskura has wonderful vocals from Alka, and particularly Javed Ali. Mastam is at best a non-starter medley even as Zindagi, the Srinivas-solo, takes off from [...]

I wonder if this is planned to coincide with what looks like a year where ARR seems to be everywhere, with JA, JTYJN, Sakkarakatti, and Ada out this year and the music of Yuvraaj, Ghajini, and D6 likely coming out before the year ends.

AUG 24, 2008 – IF YOU LOVE FILMS – good films, great films, even bad films that you’d never admit to liking but find it difficult, nonetheless, to give the channel-flip to – one of the toughest tasks you’ll find is making lists. People ask you all the time, variations on essentially what boots your [...]

Was looking at the Discography section of arrahman.com and I saw Blue listed within the Hindi section of it. Does anybody or more specifically Nitesh have more information on this? arrahman.com is Rahman’s official site and ussually posts information on Rahman (eg. JTYJN track list, KM Music conservatory news, etc) so it seems fairly authentic.

Releasing very soon, the score for Ada was composed by Rahman 5 years back. At that time the project was meant to star Amitabh Bachchan and Dilip Kumar, but due to whatever reason the project never took off. With [...]

#5 Saawariya
Monty Sharma
Saawariya marks the “official” debut of Monty Sharma as a song composer after doing the background scores for Black, Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. The Title track is the lightest and easily the catchiest track on the album. Its reprise version has debuting singer Shail Hada stretching out [...]

#10 The Train
Mithoon
The Train will go down as Mithoon’s first full fledged solo soundtrack. Although he isn’t able to break through and deliver something that would be on par with his previous stunning numbers like Maula Mere, Javeda Zindagi and Tere Bin, Mithoon is able to come up with a number [...]

#15 Bhool Bhuliya
Prittam
I really can’t remember a Priyadarshan comedy ever having a decent soundtrack, so Bhool Bhuliya becoming something that is actually worth a listen is a huge surprise. The Title Track is the most mass appealing number of the year, to the effect that even the English lyrics aren’t able to hold back [...]

After a lackluster 2006, the year 2007 was a solid year for music from the Hindi film Industry. Here is the first part of my countdown of the top 20 soundtracks of 2007. Note that eligibility was based on release of the film instead of the date of the music release.

A statement such as “a marriage of sights and sounds” perhaps is the best way to describe Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s cinema. This statement holds for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas and assumingly Khamoshi as well (which I have yet to see). Even the song less Black didn’t mean that Bhansali wouldn’t have anything [...]

Posted the estimate yesterday, and now it looks like Saawariya has refined it to give an exact total. Once again, I would assume that the figure is given by Sony and is a gross figure. As for the validity of the number, if this indeed is Sony giving this number, it is difficult to cite [...]

Box office Mojo has posted a $14.25 million gross (~56 cr) in India for Saawariya. I find this really odd, because usually what happens is that BOmojo waits for IBOS to post their numbers which they take after converting to American Dollars. But since IBOS hasn’t posted their numbers as of yet, you have to [...]

Inspired by recent articles by Baradwaj Rangan and Karthik, I thought I would put a little something together to commemorate the 15th year anniversary of Roja’s release which of course was the starting point of AR Rahman. Being a non-Tamilian I can’t speak of what the impact of the album was upon me. Neither can [...]
