Ranbir Kapoor to play a Sikh in Shimit Amin’s next

Subhash K Jha

Akshay Kumar did it in Nikhil Advani’s Chandni Chowk to China. Now, Ranbir Kapoor plays a Sardarji in Shimit Amin’s next film for Yash Raj. The role play is that of a young Sikh who goes through a series of incredibly bitter-sweet incidents, which eventually leads to an explosive state of self-realisation.

Says a source, “Everyone presumed that after the stupendous success of Chak De India and given the fact that both Shah Rukh and Shimit knew each other long before the film, the pair would team up again for the next venture. However, certain important sections at Yash Raj gave the thumbs down to Shah Rukh, as they felt he would not look convincing as a Sardarji. They instead insisted on a younger actor (as the character is starting out in life) who’s also a Punjabi, for authenticity.”

Recently, when Ranbir checked out his new look with the turban, the result, according to insiders, was spectacular. “Even Shimit is now convinced that Kapoor is the right choice to play the part,” reveals the source further.

Ranbir, who’s shooting in Europe for Yash Raj Films’ Bachna Ae Haseenon is tightlipped about the project. But he subtly admits, “I’m famished for varied roles. I’m willing to play anything from an extra-terrestrial (in the Pepsi ad) to a psycho. In fact I’d love to play a serial killer,” confesses he, as shares his appetite for ‘different’ roles.

Ranbir Kapoor will be playing his favourite political figure, Rajiv Gandhi in Prakash Jha’s Rajniti.

It’s a dream come true for the actor, who’s currently on a role-shopping spree. He is in serious talks with every big-wig in tinsel town, from Karan Johar to Sajid Nadiadwala.
It was Ranbir’s father Rishi Kapoor who urged his son to hear the director out. And Ranbir was spellbound.

“I had my mind and heart set on Ranbir for the role. It’s a role that requires innocence, nobility, idealism, vision and dynamism. It also requires a personality of perfect breeding and gentility. I’d have probably dropped Rajniti if Ranbir hadn’t agreed. I could see he was guarded when we met. But the reserve dissolved when I narrated my script to him. ‘I am doing this,’ is all he said after hearing me out,” says Jha.

The role would require Ranbir to go through a gamut of cultural and chronological changes. For his next release Bachna Ae Haseenon, Ranbir ages from his late teens to mid-30s and in Rajniti, he would first play a young Indian student studying in a foreign university with a Caucasian girlfriend. The character then undergoes a mammoth metamorphosis as he’s summoned back to Delhi to take over the family’s political empire after a gruesome tragedy.

Jha is currently looking at three top young international actresses to play Ranbir’s companion. “The heroine won’t be a non-descript model or TV actress posing as a big star for a Bollywood film. The actress opposite Ranbir will be a top-of-the-line name.”

Bebo and Ranbir to revive the RK banner

Kareena Kapoor is all set to feature in an RK banner film. After much deliberation the Kapoor brothers - Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv - are ready to work on a youthful breezy romantic comedy early next year. The script has been finalised and the screenplay is in its final stages. Confirming the news, papa Randhir Kapoor says, “I’m making a film with Kareena. It’s going to be a youthful romantic film, and it should start in a few months from now.”

Ask him for details and he says, “We are going to make a formal announcement at the right time. All I can say is that the project featuring Bebo is underway.” We are no strangers to the fact that the Kapoor brothers have been working on scripts for the longest time. Their last production was Aa Ab Laut Chalen starring Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai, which had released in 1999.

Those in the know reveal that another film starring Ranbir Kapoor will hit the floors alongside. Randhir Kapoor says, “The Kapoor family is with Ranbir’s debut. We are making a film with Ranbir too. Both the films are set to start at the same time next year.”

News has it that elder daughter Karishma Kapoor intends to make a comeback. The actress, who shuttles between Mumbai and Delhi, has been reading up scripts. However, papa Randhir rules out any such possibility. He says, “I don’t think so.”

Bipasha- Ranbir Secret Compatibility Test

Bips colours hair while Kapoor has to get three new hairdos

Earlier this week, Bipasha Basu, busy promoting Goal, and Ranbir Kapoor, engrossed in marketing Saawariya, took a day off for a photo-session to check out their on-screen compatibility.

Hair it goes

While Bipasha coloured her hair, Ranbir cut his tresses to manageable length. Ranbir’s immediate struggle is to get into three different looks for three phases of his character’s love life for his next film for Yash Raj to be directed by Siddharth Anand.

For the film, which Ranbir insists is not a remake of the 1999 Chris O’Donnell romantic comedy The Bachelor, the young actor is required to get into three totally different looks. The character has to go from age 17 to 28 and finally to age 35.

It’s my goodwill versus big money: Shah Rukh

NEW DELHI: His ‘Om Shanti Om’ is pitted against ‘Saawariya’, which has Sony Pictures splurging big money on its publicity. But Shah Rukh Khan says no amount of money can surpass the goodwill he has created.

“After this film people will love me. And nobody is going to use the money to oust the goodness that I have created,” Shah Rukh told.
“The filmmaking business is already an expensive thing but then there is a market that is getting you that money back. I don’t think you need to spend money to make money. Having said that, yes, outside players like Sony Pictures and Columbia Tristar are hugely moneyed,” Shah Rukh added.

While ‘Om Shanti Om’ has been produced under Shah Rukh’s own banner, Red Chillies Entertainment, ‘Saawariya’ has Hollywood studio Sony Pictures as co-producer. Both are releasing Nov 9.

But Shah Rukh is all ready for the competition.

Dedicated to Achilles

Ranbir Kapoor may have already become a gay icon, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an equally crazy female following. Nothing proves this better than a visit he made to Hyderabad on October 8, to promote his debut film Saawariya.

A source who travelled with Ranbir says, “Ranbir is hugely popular with the girls. I’ve seen them go berserk when he’s around. We were in Indore when a girl jumped from the crowd and couldn’t stop smooching Ranbir. On Monday, we had another crazy experience in Hyderabad.”

Ranbir and Co were travelling by car from their hotel Taj Krishna to PVR Mall in Hyderabad on Monday afternoon, when a crazy fan brought traffic to a halt.

“Sure, my rise is faster, but my fall could be harder”

For a debutant so closely guarded by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ranbir Kapoor hardly comes across as the bashful and shy types. Quite the contrary, the newest Kapoor on the block has absolutely no inhibitions when it comes to films — which are already an all-consuming passion for him.

In ‘Saanwariya’ the young man has done a scene in which he’s offfered more a peek of his bare backside, but to his credit, he’s quite cool about it.

“Yes, I have bared my butt in the film, and it’s for a song. I was not all embarrassed to do it at all. I would do anything at all for cinema. There are no inhibitions involved. I may be a very shy person otherwise, but once in front of the camera, I can open up. I hope people enjoy watching the scene,” he says.

Dressed in a casual shirt and jeans, lounging on his massive couch, and sipping a chocolate milkshake, Ranbir Kapoor gives no sign of the tumult in his mind. But with less than a month to go before he bares his soul in his debut film ‘Saawariya’ (director Sanjay Leela Bhansali), it seems that ‘star son’, and ‘has it all’ are phrases that are beginning to bother him seriously.

Of course I’m nervous, it’s SHAH RUKH KHAN!

“I’d like to work my way up”

Ranbir Kapoor tells CT that he will never get stuck in a lover-boy image

Your entry into films…
Was inevitable. It was a lot like an unspoken truth. I think this is what happens when you grow up in an environment that eats, sleeps and talks cinema. Ever since I learnt how to walk and babble, I’ve always wanted to do see myself up there on the marquee.

Ranbir Kapoor, Imad Shah and Neil Nitin Mukesh — debut vehicles that dare to defy categorization…
Isn’t that brilliant? Neil and I have been brothers-in-arms since childhood; I have loved his performance in Johnny Gaddaar. As for Imad, I haven’t seen Dil Dosti etc but I am sure with his genes, he’ll not trip up. Can we not parcel out cinema as parallel or mainstream? Good cinema is good cinema without fretting over which section to classify it as.

A lover-boy image like your father…
Is not what I’m getting stuck in. I think it’s too early for me to decide which films I’ll be comfortable with since I haven’t the time or inclination to sit and introspect.

After Saawariya…
I see myself doing films that have a strong storyline base. I’m too new to my job to have the gall to decide what ‘my type’ of cinema is. I have just begun my career and I’d like to work my way up and have my work to speak for itself.

A mental exercise for NGers

I know its hard but I think its required considering there is so much hate among members in NG. Just try to come up with something good about an actor/director/producer/movie you despise. Please restrict your views to cinema and their contribution through their role. Just try it.
