What drives sportsmen? It could be the country, plain quest for excellence, or the will to push the body and challenge its barriers. But imagine an athlete in pursuit of glory, all because he wants to meet his favourite actor.

That’s the story of Bharat Bhatia, gold medal winner in the 50-metre snow-shoeing competition at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games held at Pyeongchang, South Korea. Bhatia dreams of meeting Bollywood star Akshay Kumar.

His mother Kanchan Bhatia, a pharma professional, had promised that she would introduce him to Akshay if he won a medal at the Special Olympics. The 21-year-old did more than that. He clinched the gold!

Now it’s her turn to honour the commitment. “He is after my life to take him to Mumbai to meet Akshay Kumar. It would be the greatest day for my son if he could meet his favourite actor. I hope that happens sooner than later, so that he can concentrate on his next goal,” she said. (more…)

  • Akshay Kumar and his box-office success
    AwesomeAkshay | October 5, 2012, 10:46 PM | 12 comments | 0 views

Among his contemporaries, Akshay Kumar is the only actor who made it on his own, without the help of any ‘godfather’. It’s worth mentioning that except Akki, all the top stars of today kicked off their careers with superhits, winning Filmfare Award for Best Male Debutant each – Aamir Khan (Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak – 1988); Salman Khan (Maine Pyar Kiya – 1989); Ajay Devgn (Phool Aur Kaante – 1991); Shahrukh Khan (Deewana – 1992); Hrithik Roshan (Kaho Na Pyaar Hai – 2000).

Moreover, Hrithik also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for his debut film. On the contrary, Akshay’s debut film Saugandh (1991) was a box office dud and he had to wait till his 4th film to get his first success in Khiladi (1992). Every actor has to work hard, but Akki has seen that struggle for success very closely.

To earn the Superstar tag which he enjoys today, he had to climb up the ladder of 16 successive flops until he rediscovered himself with Jaanwar (1999), which is considered to be his comeback film and is one of the biggest hits in Bihar of those times. Although, this was a high point in his career, it won’t be wrong to term 2007 as the year of his rebirth at the box office. Frankly speaking, he is not a star with the best acting skills, but he is definitely the one who is complete and versatile. Action and Comedy are his forte and he’s league ahead of his competitors in these genres.

Below is a graphical analysis of his his career since 2007. Let the numbers speak for themselves. (more…)

Winning and losing are merely incidental to playing the game, believes Akshay Kumar. Filmfare cheers the khiladi for all seasons

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Akshay Kumar gets candid about everything!
    AwesomeAkshay | September 9, 2012, 4:36 PM | 4 comments | 45 views

Had this interview been conducted face-to-face, action superstar Akshay Kumar in all likelihood would have retorted, “Don’t angry me!” to certain questions. But since it was on email (he was in Muscat for a shoot), he merely excused himself from queries regarding his friends Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan.

Fair enough! After all, today is Akshay Kumar’s birthday. Rowdy Rathore has smashed box office records. He has completed 23 years in the industry with 100 films. And most importantly, he returns to his khiladi avatar after 12 years in Khiladi 786. So there’s plenty for him to talk about — himself, for instance, and his career. (more…)
