The soft-spoken RajkumarHirani, who is not known to lose his equanimity easily, is an angry man. He is upset with the volley of reports that have been appearing of late, aimed at ‘sabotaging’ his under-production film PK.
Especially damaging, say his friends, are the comparisons with the recent AkshayKunar-PareshRawalstarrer OMG-Oh My God, and the rumours that the similarities may have forced him to rewrite the script entirely, pushing back the schedule indefinitely.
A crewmember (on request of anonymity) told TOI, “Somebody is clearly out to sabotage PK. And that is simply because Hirani is a man of few words. PK has no resemblance to OMG-Oh My God, it is an entirely original film. Hirani took his time to write it and he is not a fool to put Kanji Virrudh Kanji on celluloid all over again and lay claims on a film based on it.”
Apparently Hirani was amused when the reports of the similarities first started trickling in. But then the rumours intensified, and he did not find it funny any more. Worse, some publications even reported that PK has been indefinitely postponed. “Hirani starts the film in December as planned after Aamir from his Talaash commitments,” says the source. (more…)
The Delhi High Court Friday asked the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to “urgently” pass the order on a plea filed by actor Ajay Devgn against the alleged monopolistic practices adopted by Yash Raj Films in ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’.
Yash Raj Films (YRF), the production house owned by late Yash Chopra, allegedly abused its dominant position by asking exhibitors to dedicate more screens to their upcoming release “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” than for his “Son of Sardaar”, Devgn said in a complaint to the CCI.
“Jab Tak Hai Jaan” (starring Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma) and “Son Of Sardaar” (starring Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha and Sanjay Dutt) are scheduled for release this Diwali Nov 13.
Hearing the plea of Devgn, Justice Rajiv Shakdher asked the CCI to hear the plea and pass the order urgently. (more…)

Haider Direction: Vishal Bhardwaj Actors: Shahid Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon, Irrfan Khan, Shraddha Kapoor Rating: ***1/2 There is much in Haider that deserves a standing ovation. Let’s start with the courage of director Vishal Bhardwaj. Hamlet is one of Shakespeare’s most difficult and ambiguous texts. It’s also his longest— it takes over four hours to deliver. Hamlet in itself is a beast to be tamed. Vishal and his co-writer, the acclaimed Kashmiri journalist Basharat Peer, transplant the play to Kashmir. It plays out against a socio-political tragedy that has been wrought over six decades and that has a Rashomon-like quality to it — the heroes and villains switch places, depending on the narrator. The result is a film that is problematic and far tooRead more...
Thoughts on AR Rahman’s gloriously fun and wholly individual soundtrack for the new Shankar film. You know that familiar Tamil-cinema contrivance where a prisoner in handcuffs is being led away in a police van, and the van stops at a crossing, and the prisoner looks around furtively and sees a chance, and as the cops are looking the other way (or maybe after a scuffle) he slips out and runs into the forest, and he runs and he runs, and then, in a clearing, there’s a conveniently located shack where a sweaty smithy is pounding away on an anvil, and he looks up and sees those handcuffs in front of his nose, and he brings his hammer down and frees the prisoner? That’s the pictureRead more...
