barfi movie review by taran adarsh(4/5)

September 12, 2012 | 3

The late Rajesh Khanna put it across marvelously in the memorable ANAND, ‘Zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahi.’ Notwithstanding the roadblocks in our lives, one should celebrate life every single moment, every single day. That, in a nutshell, is the essence of Anurag Basu’s BARFI!.

When we meet/see differently-abled people or special people, we may have a notion that they live a gloomy, grief-stricken life. BARFI! shatters the myth.

BARFI! cannot be slotted in any particular genre. But it has the disposition of the much-acclaimed LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, a delightful film that tugged at your heart strings. That film advocated the fact that one should savor every moment. Similarly, BARFI! notifies you to relish life and live it king-size. Yet, like most Hindi movies, this one is essentially a love story that throws the spotlight on the happy-go-lucky Barfi and his romances, first with the classy Shruti and later, with an autistic girl, Jhilmil.

The beauty of the film lies in the fact that it instantly absorbs you into Barfi’s world. I wish to specify that one should not correlate BARFI! with disability. It’s more about characters who face the challenges that life has to offer, yet live a more gratifying life than anyone else. It’s about living each day of your life to the fullest, giving happiness, feeling love. It’s a unique love story between three exceptional characters, something we haven’t witnessed on the Hindi screen earlier.

September 12, 2012 | 5

Expectation:To be frank ,i didnot knew music was given by amit trivedi,so had no expectation for good songs from English vinglish .But after getting details of soundtrack and singer name, was expecting some good songs.

1>Badla Nazara Shilpa Rao and Amit trivedi:Once the vocal of shilpa rao started,it was heading one way, fast pace with catchy chorus, hit the bull’s eye.Just rocking song from shilpa rao.Music is so peppy, fun, enjoyfull .Lyrics is good too.It has Male version too and Amit trivedi does good job nonetheless. 4/5

2>Dhak Dhuk by Amit Trivedi:Soft slow melodious song with vocal of amit trivedi, lyrics are more indian touch which make this wonderful to listen. Flutes and strings mixup in the music is just too good to ear. Absolutely must listen song.4/5

Joker movie by yahoomovies:(Rating: One crop circle)

August 31, 2012 |

Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Minisha Lamba, Shreyas Talpade
Directed by Shirish Kunder
Rating: One crop circle

If we don’t have any extraterrestrials ever bothering to visit us, we know who to blame now. Shirish Kunder’s ‘Joker’ can be watched on TV sets with small picture tubes but not by those with a narrow imagination. After all, films featuring aliens enjoy unlimited creative liberty to design beings who defy form and feature for one simple reason: no one knows how they look. But regrettably, ‘Joker’ uses this great power with great irresponsibility and provides us with actors in pumpkin suits who put up a minimum wage performance. And while an orderly mind will be weak to comprehend the true meaning of ‘Kaala Ghoosh Goot Goot’ (a character’s trademark dialogue in the film), we can only guess that it is a warning to exit the movie screen ASAP unless you want your brains scooped out of your ears. Unfortunately, we don’t have that luxury, so we brave this audio-visual slaughter, to bring you this review.

Welcome to Pagalpur, a village so damned with that none of three states that surround it want to call it their own. As the name literally suggests, the inhabitants of this place include rejects of society who have all escaped from a mental institution during the colonial times and figured out a way to be self-sustainable. And while you might want to congratulate the cock-eyed Mukhiya (Darshan Jariwala) for his entrepreneurial spirit, he is, like everyone else in Pagalpur, a carefree imbecile. Fortunately for them, the Mukhiya’s son Agasthya (Akshay Kumar) happens to be a NASA scientist who is called home to address Pagalpur’s pressing water situation. So Agasthya (being a scientist and all) along with his girlfriend Diva (Sonakshi Sinha) come up with an ingenious plan: dress up some of the locals in veggies, fruits and Diwali bulbs to attract the global media’s attention to alien sightings in their village. Why? Because wearing a skinny green suit with karelas stuck to your arms can’t make you look very human, no? If you really want to know whether they get by convincingly, the answer is yes, but only as much as a bearded Irishman cross-dressing for a Halloween party would.

While originality is frowned upon in Bollywood, ‘Joker’ earns the credit for being the first hindi alien comedy. But the intermediate level of VFX and the pre-school humour only ensure that it loses even with no one to compete with. And what is most disgraceful is that Director Shirish Kunder bragged about pulling editing resources from London and New York to work on this film and to make his lovely visitors from outer space a little more camera-friendly. And what we see on the screen could only be better if it were on the radio.  At least out imagination could’ve brushed up a ‘Jaadoo’ who didn’t pack in Chitrangada’s thumkas.

indicine Joker review:Overall, it’s a ‘joke’ on the audience courtesy Shirish Kunder. You’d be better off not being the ‘Joker’. Stay away.(1/5)

August 31, 2012 | 1

The promos were dull, Akshay Kumar disowned the film and there was no hype prior to it’s release. But, amidst all the negativity surrounding Joker, I was hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Director Shirish Kunder’s last film Jaan-e-mann didn’t work at the boxoffice, but the movie had it’s share of fans.

Does Joker work? Read on..

Story: During Independence, when the map of India was re-drawn, a small village called Paglapur didn’t find a place on the map. Inmates of a mental asylum broke loose, formed their own village and aptly named it Paglapur. Fast forward to the current decade and absolutely nothing has changed – the village still has no electricity or water and the villagers are still act like madmen.

Enter Agastya (Akshay Kumar) with his pretty girlfriend Diva (Sonakshi Sinha). He is working on a device to communicate with the aliens!  When Agastya finds out that his father, who lives in Paglapur is seriously ill, he abandons his work and returns. How he transforms the village forms the rest of the tale. Read More

Zeenews Review: ‘Joker’ is not funny at all(rating:1/5)

August 31, 2012 | 1

Owing to the technical challenges, the concept of weaving a story along aliens and UFOs has always been tricky for Indian filmmakers, but I would like to applaud Shirish Kunder just for the fact that he dared to make a film around extra-terrestrials, even though the success of the venture looks very bleak.

‘Joker’ upped the curiosity level of Indian audience, especially after Bollywood’s exciting and a rather successful brush with ‘Jaadu’ – the most adorable alien we all met in Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. But, Kunder’s much ambitious project- ‘Joker’ clearly lacks the ‘wow’ factor which it abundantly promised in the film’s trailer. Entertainment wise, the film really has nothing to offer.

Producer Farah Khan while promoting the film, confidently said that ‘Joker’ would make for a great family viewing at the theatres as elders wouldn’t have to worry about raunchy kisses and scintillating skin show popping every now and then in front of the kids. It is fine for the director to think of making a ‘clean’ movie, but at least there has to be a story to make people sit in the theatre. And I doubt that the kids of today, after being fed with Hollywood flicks like ‘Ice Age’ and ‘Spy Kids’ would buy this Kunder’s fantasy.

What with fascinating and colourful characters, who painted the town red while promoting the film, I had so much expectation from ‘Joker’; but all that has been washed out as the film has come as a big disappointment. The only saving grace is in the form of Akshay Kumar who desperately manages to tether the film’s loose elements into a mediocre fun caper, but even his efforts succumb to the weak plot and utterly mismanaged cast of the film.

When Indian NASA scientist Raj and his wife Manali find themselves in Paglapur, their worlds are turned upside down. On a secret mission to create a device to communicate with aliens, Raj will keep Joker audiences glued to their seat as they try to figure out why he has come to this strange place.

Shirin Farhad Ki To Nikal Padi Has Dull Opening Ek Tha Tiger Dominates

August 24, 2012 | 6

Shirin Farhad Ki To Nikal Padi opened to a dull 20-25% response at the box office. A few multiplexes in the metros had slightly better collections but occupancies were bad in tier 2 and 3 cities. The film will depend on word of mount and the all important Saturday will decide its fate.

Ek Tha Tiger is still dominating the box office, there is a drop in collections week on week but the collections are still high compared to what other films have done at the end of their first week and beginning of the second week.

The film will not match the 33 crore nett second weekend of Three Idiots but has chances of coming out with a top three second weekend or even the second highest if the second weekend remains strong through the three days.
