Star Ranking March 2013 – Akshay Kumar slides; Ajay looking @ No 1 spot

Disclaimer: My ranking takes into account BO performance till March 10 2013 and current public perception as per my observation. This ranking does not consider potential of a star but the result that stars are able to deliver.

Female Star Ranking TOP 10:

[1] Katrina Kaif – She is the HIT machine of Bollywood with consistent HITS. She gave one Blockbuster (ETT), One Hit (Jab Tak Hai Jaan) and one super hit item song (Agneepath). With her cent percent record…she is an undisputed queen.

[2] Sonakshi Sinha – Climbs to No 2 despite a disaster in Joker. She gave two blockbusters – Rowdy Rathore and Dabangg2 and one Hit – Son Of Sardaar. She is a strong contender for No1 next year.

[3] Priyanka Chopra – Rocked in Agneepath and then with Barfi which was a super hit. She also released her music album which is triple platinum winner already.

[4] Deepika Padukone – Climbs 3 position up thanks to her super hit Race2 which rocked the country in Jan 2013.

[5] Vidya Balan – She has given blockbusters on her own like Kahaani. Her next with Eimraan Hashmi titled “Ghanchakkar”, is keenly awaited. Lack of movies may see her dropping down a bit.

[6] Kareena Kapoor – Heroine opened very well and showed her stardom. However the movie did not sustain. She shined in another Hit- Talaash. Her item number in Dabangg2 is a hit but not a craze the way Munni was.

[7] Asin – She is the luckiest after Katrina for working only with the best of the stars and getting hits. Bol Bachchan’s success cements her position. If we combine her South Indian hits, then she may be No 1 female star of Indian film industry. She also starred in KHILADI 786 which had super hit songs and the movie got her decent success.

[8] SriDevi – Though she is beyond ranking…her super success with English Vinglish brought her right along with contemporary heroines. However with no future lineup, this may end up as a flash in the pan.

[9] Bipasha Basu – Thanks to Raaz 3, she moves 3 places up. She was the soul of the movie and got tremendous appreciation. Raaz 3 is a super hit and a lot of credit is given to Bips.

[10] Anushka Sharma – She was the live wire of Jab Tak Hai Jaan…her sole hit this year. A promising actress and will rise up.

Male Star Ranking Top 10

[1] Salman Khan – Dabangg2, that released in fag end of 2012, ensured that he remains No 1 for some time to come. With just one film releasing this year…he will be missed in 2013.

[2] Ajay Devgn- After his two 100+ Cr Hits with BolBachchan and Son of Sardaar, he is in No 2 now. His Himmatwala may see him become No 1 as this could be his 3rd consecutive 100Cr grosser in 10 months time.

[3] Ranbir Kapoor – He is now India’s No 3 Star and probably the best actor in top 5. His acclaimed performance in Barfi and extraordinary BO result of Barfi gets his extra bonus points. A landmark film in Hindi Cinema and a blockbuster, Barfi despite its controversies will be remembered for decades. His last film Rockstar was also a superhit and won him several awards last year. He is doing what Aamir and Hrithik wants to do every year.

[4] Akshay Kumar – His last three films (OMG, K786, Special 26) did not see good opening and hence Akshay slides 2 position down. OMG went on to become a blockbuster. K786 was above average and Special 26 is Semi-Hit. Special 26 was widely appreciated and its appreciation may help Akshay in his next release in getting better opening.

[5] Shahrukh Khan – SRK was never a star who did few films. His absence from the scene is affecting his ranking. With just one hit in the form of JTHJ, he needs more films to firm his position up the order.

[6] Aamir Khan – No major hits since last 2 years, now catches up with Aamir Khan. His Talaash was semi hit, but when one does very few films, more is required. He slips 4 positions down from his previous No 2 position. With no other release to support his stardom, Aamir needs to work more. His Dhoom3 can ensure that he returns in Top 5.

[7] Saif Ali Khan – He climbs one position thanks to the super hit Race2. The movie opened primarily due to Saif. After two back to back super hits cocktail and race2, Saif is BACK.

[8] Hrithik Roshan- Despite Agneepath he looks vulnerable at this rank because all stars above him are capable of delivering more hits. He is one star whose ranking depends on how other star’s movie are doing primarily because he does very few films. A classic case of potential going waste. Good news for him is that stars below him are not capable of removing him from this position esp when he has films like Krrish3, Paani and Bang Bang in his lineup. He falls on position below.

[9] Eimraan Hashmi – Thanks to the super hit performance of Raaz 3, Eimraan is ahead of Saif. He is the most exciting star and next Akshay Kumar of Bollywood. His fan following is Huge and his release frequency of films are very good. His choice of movies are not very good and movies like Ek thi Daayan is not sufficient. A lot depends on Ghanchakkar with Vidya which is an A project for him.

[10] Imraan Khan – Imraan has a knack of picking right script…maybe his Maamu choses his next movie. Luckiest star of Bollywood. However to grow from here he has to beat some stalwarts. Unfortunately he is absent from the scene when heavyweights like SRK and Aamir are absent, and have opened gates got new stars. His next releases are exciting and mix of masala and class.
