4 6I think this phase of Salman has been seen by – Ashok Kumar, Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand, Shammi Kapoor, Rajesh Khanna, Rajendra Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, SRK, Aamir Khan and Sanjay Dutt only.
When i say this phase – I mean popularity only. Box office comparison is subject to debate always as different eras have different dimensions.
I also say that the duration of such stardom varies among difference stars and this again in another debate and highly arguable.
Salman at the moment is enjoying adulation from by and large fans of all stars and movie genres. This has some contribution from his off screen work and controversies.-

Rajesh Khanna. Yes he is the one…Salman’s present status is just 1/4th of Stardom Rajesh Khanna’s achieved during 70-71.
Rajendra Kumar: True he gave back to back super hits. But in most of them, RK didn’t have major role to play. Some were multistarrres, some became hit due to superhit music. Most of his movies had slow opening and they became hit gradually. Let’s say Rajendra Kumar just got lucky and was in right place at right time
Amitabh: He was the king from 1976 to 1988. Even his flops made money than the so called hits. Salman has to remain in top for 3 more years to match Bachchan’s status
SRK : Partly agree.
Aamir: When, Where and How?
Sanjay dutt : He was on top for a brief period after Sadak and Saajan. But he gave numerous flops in between. I will not consider him in that group

Giving consecutive hits / biggest hits is not my criteria here. This is mostly based on hearsay as many stars lived before i was born. So have to reply on them.Ashok Kumar was India’s first star. He came in 40s and 50s when India was born. Ashok Kumar was quite popular star during those times as per my discussion with elder generation. Ofcourse, we cannot understand those times as stardom was not coined then.
Dileep Kumar was on top for a long long time. I think we have to give this man his due. His name was enough to make a film hit.
Shammi Kappor saw success just before Rajesh Khanna…though not at a scale of latter…but nonetheless he was very popular in 60s.
Rajendra Kumar – He was king of playing physically challenged roles….all were super hits and forgotten film….i think Akshay earlier and Salman now is falling into this trap where they would be remembered more than their films.
Aamir – TZP followed by Ghajini make him No 1 star beating SRK for the first time after latter’s decade or so rule. First to give 100 Cr with ghajini and then 200 Cr. He was No 1 from the day Ghajini released till the day Bodyguard released. Salman’s real popularity as we see now started unarguably from Bodyguard…though i think after Ready he was ready.
Sanjay Dutt – Khalnayak, Sadak, Saajan were his landmark success. He was the one who brought body building to mainstream, much before Salman. He got into wrong hands and all plum projects went to SRK and so is the history. I think the pass between Khalnayak and Gumraah saw him at his peak which is difficult to measure via BO success but i think you know what i am saying.

19 2It’s weird that a lot of people only take to Salman’s box office prowess post the Wanted era. Yes, consistency levels are at peak with 5 back to back smash-hits.. but prior to that he has delivered a lot of monster hits too with a good number of flops in between..
But a record that only he can claim and no other actor has or will match any time in the near future is the number of highest grossing films of the respective years (8) and with three consecutive top grossing films from 2010 to 2012, such a record can be no fluke or just good luck. Credit has to be given to Salman. If he is not the modern day superstar, then not sure who else is worthy of such a title.

1. the biggest hit of the year for 3 consecutive years?
2. 5 huge hits without a single average or flop film? (except rajesh khanna)
3. biggest hit of 3 decades
4. have 9 times biggest hits of the year till age 47?
5. maximum nubers of highest blockbusters with new directors/heroines?
6. have similar longevity ? his 1st big hit came 24 years back and latest came just now. who else has that kind of longevity?
the only 2 ppl to have similar ( as opposed to same) level of success are dilip kumar and amitabh bachchan. even they may be much behind salman on many scales (biggest hits of the year/decade, longevity, hits with new directors/ heroines ) but wud be ahead of salman on some other scales. ( total hits, hit flop ratio)

3 4@Danish, Sanju Baba was a HUGE star during Sadak, Saajan, Khalnayak till the day he got arrested.
Khalnayak release saw him to peak in his popularity. However this was short lived, but yes i did feel that at that time most of India was rooting for him. As mentioned i am not including BO parameter here, but simply assessed the popularity on the ground.I think you underestimate the popularity of Ashok Kumar in 50s, Shammi Kapoor and Rajesh Khanna in 60s…etc. even SRK in 90s was HUGE and so was Aamir during Ghajini release.
Salman’s real stardom has been prominent from 2010 when Ready released. Before that he was not as popular as he is now and always was behind one or the other popular hero.

Moreover there is news that salman, Karan johar and rohit shetty will be coming together for a movie. This is also sure shot blockbuster.

if u cant then quietly agree that sanjay dutt got his only biggest hit of the year (saajan) riding on salman’s mpk popularity and has never had one by himself. he has all of 4-5 clean hits in his 33 years old career and wat can be a more pathetric record. dont go by media reports, go by ticket sales.
and while at it – tell me the boxoffice records of ashok kumar, shammi kapoor, srk in the 90s etc ( on rajesh khanna i agree) which can meet salman’s recent achievemnts? on overall acheivments even rajesh khanna is nowhere in overall achievements. only dilip kumar amitabh bachchan and salman khan. with each outdoing the others on different scales and perhaps salman on highest number of scales. (maximum biggets hits, atbbs, longevity etc)

also salman has done films, especially comedies, with directors supposed to be loosing grip (david in partner and anees in no entry) and come up with huge winners. i guess wen a comedy director changes his regular hero the new actor brings in a fresh set of improvisations and ideas so the product starts looking fresher.
this is true of all genres but more of comedies.

If u wanna talk periods and eras, I’m with you and usually there are movies that mark the beginning or end of eras….but plz don’t tell me that a star that has 3 blockbusters in one year and nothing in the next year is in some way a smaller than another has who has 2 top hits in two consecutive years, specially if those 2 hits are not huge to begin with.-

Budget is also done yearly.—- Yearly classification is a must and it plays important role on who was top actor for that year. Which was best movie of that year.
Also its not ONLY about year’s. Salman also has maximum number of ATBB’s.
