Some mini-reviews

Okay so a bunch of stuff I watched recently:

Shadow of a Doubt
An old Hitchcock film from the 40′s.  Not seen many of his films but enjoyed it a lot – it’s a mystery.  Great ambiance and fun to watch, though both my mates fell asleep and only I made it to the end.

Devdas (1935)
Wanted to watch this for so many years.  Finally found a DVD online which i ordered from india.  But now I think it’s available on youtube!  Anyways, found it quite hard to watch.  Very ‘theatrical’ acting – I guess this was made a very long time ago!  Only second Saigal movie I’ve seen…hard to believe he was a heartthrob in his time ;-)

Dillagi (1966)
Saw this cos i like the Lata song ‘Mere Dil Pe Chal Rahein Hain’.  Typical sixties movie with Mala Sinha and Sanjay Khan – they fight, they sing songs, they fall in love.  Watchable for the cast and music.

Sur-Kshetra
I watched the whole show, but I shouldn’t have.  Atif Aslam and Himesh are both immature, rude pricks.  Asha’s behaviour was embarrassing.  Only Runa and Abida were decent.  The singers were generally not as impressive as on other shows but the finalists were very good, esp Diljaan.  I found the format pretty poor (the judges award either zero or ten after each performance – how dumb is that) and I didn’t think having a music ‘war’ between India and Pakistan was in particularly good taste.

The Ghost Writer
Really enjoyed this thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Brosnan.  About a writer who gets caught up in a political mess.  Would like to see more Polanski movies.  Any recommendations?

Private Practice
Watched all 6 seasons of this Grey’s Anatomy spin-off in a month (whilst I wasn’t working).  Really, really enjoyed it.  Shame its finished as I could have kept watching.  In particular the ethical issues raised were really interesting.

Bahaaron Ki Manzil
I’ve seen this Meena Kumari – Dharmendra – Rahman mystery a few years back but came across it on youtube recently and just clicked on it and ended up watching the whole thing.  Meena Kumari plays a woman who wakes up, and denies that her husband of 20 years and her teenage daughter are anything to do with her.  Dharmendra plays her psychiatrist who is the only one to believe her.  I actually like this film a lot even though the story’s not particularly logical!  Pleasure watching the lead cast.  And awesome songs, esp Lata’s Nigaahen Kyun Bhatakti Hai and Yeh Daaman Ab Na Chhutega.

Titli
I really like Rituparno Ghosh’s movies.  I’ve enjoyed almost everything i’ve seen of his work.  This stars Aparna Sen and Konkona, who plays a star-struck fan of Mithun, wh they end up meeting.  I don’t wanna give more away but its a simple, interesting movie.

Yatra
I wanted to watch this for a long time but had moderate expectations as I knew reviews weren’t good.  Nana Patekar plays a writer, Deepti Naval is his wife and Rekha plays a tawaif (surprise surprise).  It’s very ‘artsy’ but mainly rather pointless, and at times non-sensical.  Deepti is awesome as always, but rekha’s acting was pretty disappointing.

Suits (Season 2)
Brilliant stuff!  Bring on season 3!

House
Finally filnished the 8th and last season.  Can’t believe it’s over.  Possibly my favourite TV show of all time.  Don’t think anything will fill the void left by Gregory :-o

Griha Pravesh
This is exactly the type of movie I would expect to like – the exploration of a few characters and their lives, at a slow pace.  But I wasn’t entirely impressed.  This was Basu Bhattacharya’s final film in his trilogy about married couples (the foirst two being Anubhav – Sanjeev and Tanuja, with those awesome Geeta Dutt songs, and Aavishkar – Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila).  Antway, here Sanjeev Kumar and Sharmila play a married couple, leadinga dull life.  He is a boring accountant, who ends up in an affair with a very slutty Sarika.  I found her character quite irritating and althugh she’s attractive, its hard to imagine why the husband strayed, though she does improve over the course of the film.  What lifts the movie is Gulzar’s dialogues – he’s a genius when it comes to relationships.  And the final half-hour is gripping!

English Vinglish (again)
Somehow ended up watching this for the third time…not particularly out of my own volition but still didn’t mind seeing it again.  Favourite film of 2012.
Naya Andaz
There are very few Meena Mumari films I’ve not seen so am really excited when I manage to find one that has thus far proved unavailable.  Recently I got hold of Naya Andaz, Savera, Chaar Dil Chaar Raahein, Sanam, Shri Krishna Vivaah and Farishta so will watch them in due course.
Anyways, Naya Andaz stars her, Kishore Kumar and Pran.  It’s watchable but nothing great – Kishore plays a singer/poet who leaves home as he is not valued by his father.  He joins a drama company run by Pran who loves him main star, Meena.  Like i said, nothing special but a pleasure to see Meena looking young and vivacious.

Sanam
Dev Anand and Suraiya star in this relatively interesting movie about redemption.  Dev is poor, accidentally kills someone and then falls in love with the judge’s daughter, who thinks all poor ppl are bad.  I guess it has tones of Awara.  The lead pair are good, but I was more interested in the girl playing Suraiya’s sister – MEENA KUMARI :-)   She’s hilarious and steals the show whenever she’s onscreen :-)

Ek Deewana Tha
Finally finished this.  I’d seen most of it on a plane some months back.  I like Prateik but this was a kinda odd movie.  Didn’t like the actress.  Mediocre music by Rahman’s standards.

Biwi Aur Makaan
Produced by Hemant Kumar and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee.  Starring Biswajeet and Mehmood.  A comedy about 5 guys trying to geta  flat in Bombay.  nly couples area wanted by landlords – so they pretend to be two married couples!  Not as good as his later comedies but still fun.  And a great Lata-Asha due – Dabe Labon se Kabhi Jo Koi Salaam Lele.

Student of The Year
I prefer Karan Johar sticking to this kind of superficial stuff rather than overstepping his ability and trying to make something like KANK.  This is more what he is ‘good’ and I actually found it less painful to watch than KANK.  Its crap nevertheless of course.  Varun and Siddarth are not so awful but Alia is really bad.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan
How did Yash Chopra make this :-(   Dull music, horrible leading lady, boring story.

Kya Super Cool Hain Hum
Umm!!!

      Hey,

I can see why you stopped Devdas after 20 mins – it’s pretty difficult to watch!

Bahaaron Ki Manzil was a big flop. And most ppl I’ve spoken to find it silly. But I’m a huge Meena Kumari fan and the songs are awesome, and honestly I found the mystery quite intriguing, so yeah, do check it out :-)

Sanjeev is my favourite actor so am happy to watch him in anything. Luckily he did lts of good films (as well as bad ones).

U liked Alia Bhatt? I thought she was dreadful ;-)

      Cheers,

      Salim

Saw your name for the first time and looks like i missed so many of your “mini reviews” posts in the past. Excellent…

Except one or two films nothing seems interesting to watch… Few I have seen and my reaction is almost same as yours.

Will buyout house and suits with private practice ;) if time permits :P

      Thanks dude :=)

House for me was one of the greatest shows ever made so yes, def buy it. PP I liked a lot but it’s not in House’s league for sure.

Salim, this is great. Thanks for sharing you views on so many movies at once. These days I am busy watching anything that has Waheeda Rehman in it. Have not really seen much of Meena Kumari. What movies of her, apart from Pakeezah, would you suggest, just for starters.

Biwi aur Makaan sounds very similar to the Mukta Arts movie ‘Paying Guests’ that released 2-3 years back. Not into TV shows but have seen bits of House, as my sister is training to be a doctor and she is addicted to the show, can see why the show is so popular amongst her kind.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

      Hey,

Waheeda is awesome – so beautiful, a great dancer and of course a brilliant actress. Apart from the Guru Dutt films I liked her a lot in the Ajanta Arts movies and of course Khamoshi and Teesri Kasam, as well as Guide. A ‘small film’ of hers I love is Ek Dil Sau Afsaane. And she worked for Ray in Abhijaan. Even in her later films she was a pleasure to watch.

I liked Paying Guest except the last 30 mins or so (but I saw it a while back). Great songs and a sparkling Nutan.

Ah where do I start with my favourite Meena Kumari films! I guess her best performance is of course Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam. Pakeezah is her classic of course. My personaly favourite is Bhabhi Ki Chudiyaan with Balraj Sahni – it is such a beautiful film. She did lots of comedies early on – my favourite is Miss Mary which is just hilarious, but Bandish, Kohinoor and Azaad were great fun too. In terms of drama I liked Aarti, Ek Hi Raasta, Mere Apne, Kaajal, Chitralekha, Dil Ek Mandir, Dil Apna Aur Preet Paraayi.

If you want to try her out I would see: Bhabhi ki Chudiyaan and Miss Mary to start with. Lemme know what you think :-)

@salim – i am so happy to find such huge fellow meena kumari fan. by the way have u watched meena kumari’s daayera by kamal amrohi? i am dying to watch it.

biwi aur makaan sounds relevant even 50 years later, at least in mumbai. and i agree with ur observation on karan johar too.

and i hope by jab tak hai jaan horrible leading lady u mean anushka – not katrina.

@dwnpiyush – meena kumaari ke baare mein poochhna hai to mujhse poochho! meena kumari was not about good movies or bad movies. (though she has huge number of classics to her credit) she was all about herself, she rose above the script, directors everything.

in a tacky melodrama called ‘chandan ka paalna’ with the stupid story of a ‘barren’ wife who wants to divorce her husband so he can have a child from another wife – she pretends to start drinking and going out to ‘parties’ wearing ‘sharara with full sleeved kameezes’ to look fashionable and off course have a horrible bouffant. and in that tacky film she was no less than meryl streep in bridges of the madison county or nutan in bandini or …..

waise to i wud reccomend just go to her imdb and start in chronological/alphabetical/watever order but i will list – not to be missed if even if nuclear holocaust is 3 days away – kind of movies of meena kumaari.

    ek hi bhool

    baiju baawra

    bandish

    azaad

    ek hi raasta

    sharda

    yahudi

    satta bazaar

    chiraagh kahaan roshni kahaan

    kohinoor

    dil apna aur preet paraayi

    zindagi aur khwaab

    pyaar ka ssgar

    bhabhi ki chhodiyaan

    sahib biwi aur ghulaam

    main chup rahoongi

    aarti

    dil ek mandir

    saanjh aur savera

    ghazal

    chitralekha

    kaajal

    bheegi raat

    phool aur pathhar

    bahu begum

    bahaaron ki manzil

    mere apne

and then, when radio activity has peaked in your area and everyone is rushing towards a spaceship to escape it – make sure to finish paakeezah.

    thats meena kumari for you.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Haha, so we will have to agree to disagree on Katrina – I thought she was utterly inspid in JTHJ. Anushka was barely passable. Sad for his career too end on such a dull note. And without Lata :-o

Delighted to read your enthusiasm for Meena Kumari. I feel the same way. She was always a sheer pleasure to watch on screen, even in the worst movies. Those eyes…that voice…ah!

I’ve not seen Daera yet but am going to very soon:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cagEeuQwUCo
      Enjoy!

The ones I’m really looking for are:
Saat Phere – 1971 with Pradeep Kumar
      Jadui Anghoothi – 1965
      Bahaana – 1960 with Mehmood
      Madhu – 1959
Rukhsana – 1955 with Kishore Kumar
Baadbaan – 1954 with Ashok Kumar and Dev Anand

      Any info about the above??

Her poetry CD “I Write I Recite” is heartbreaking.

      Best wishes,

      Salim

@Salim/Danish….Meena Kumari and Waheeda Rahmaan are my two most fav actress from that era…I have almost seen all these Meena Kumari movies …she was such a great actress….wo bolne ka kaatil andaaz uff ..People called her tragedy queen but she was very good in comic roles also.. Will sure going to rewatch some movies this weekend

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

      Hey,

Agreed, her comic abilities are often overlooked. She was hilarious in many of these movies from the mid-fifties. Even later in films like Akeli Mat Jaiyo she was very funny.

And yes, her dialogue delivery was unmatched!

@salim – of the above baadbaan is supposed very good.

by the way i fail to understand why i cant find a single person who likes meena kyumari, nutan, shaban aazmi, rani mukheji and at the same time katrina kaif. some one who likes dilip kumar, balraj sahni, naseeruddin shah, amitabh bachchan as well as salman khan.

i think its just an act of ‘penalizing’ good looking ppl for their looks, however sensitive and versatile as artistes they may be.

this offcourse is based on the assumption that apart from katrina and salman rest are ‘avreage looking artistes’. at least comparatively.

it was one of the worst movie of Sanjeev kumar but as i have already said that the man has done some 150 movies toh kuch toh bad hogi hi..!!

one more thing—can u also tell me the name of movie (sanjeev kumar’s only) in which he plays a business men who doesn’t believe in GOD but as he grows old his children behaves badly with him and then he sees God in his dreams telling his the cruel truth of life..??

i have seen that movie long ago so can’t remember its name also i have seen about 90-100 movies of sanjeev kumar that’s why i have forgotten names of 20-30 movies of his..!!

one such movie is Where sanjeev plays a retired colonel and want his Daughter to marry but his daughter is manglik…leadt actor is Randhir kapoor…and sanjeev kumar has a Tapori duplicate in this movie..??

      I liked this movie..!!

  13. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@ank – sanjeev kumar had plenty of bad movies – but off course huge number of classics. i hear he was very money minded and did a lot of films just for money (sounds like ur akshay doesnt it?)

the movie with god was yahi hai zindagi and you may not like it but as i mentioned in another post omg was more or less a rehash of the theme if not scenes of that film.

the movie with randhir kapoor was biwi o biwi, a raj kapoor production.

then i suppose he didn’t met salman khan’s cool strategy of doing 2 movies every year and then earning crores and crores by just saying aye koi toh being human ko charity de do….

ae Akshay KBC jaa naa…waha se 1 cr jeet kar meri being human ko de de…

ae ajsy bhai tu KBC jayega na….mujhe 1 cr ki jarurat hai bhai..!!

sanjay tuhje yaad nhi tune mujhe KBC mein jaane ka waada kiya tha…mujhe mere 1 cr chahiye..!!
