Hindi Cinema’s Most Lovable Comical Productions Of All Time

L (Rue Ryuzaki)

I have tried to list the Hindi Cinema’s Best Comedy Movies in order but no matter what you try, you will miss some movies that deserve to be named or ranked highly over others.

I have not rated “Chupke Chupke” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron” in top 10 to which some may object as I personally thought others deserve better ranking than them. Any how below is the list and I think it may act as a reference point as well for comedy film fans.

Hindi Cinema's 100 Most Lovable Comical Production

PS: I have deliberately missed out few Amol Palekar’s, Shammi Kapoors, Mahmood’s and Raj Kapoor movies along with some old classical’s that i can’t remember or recall it.

FS- De dhana Dhan??? Billu Baarbar…really????

No aawara paagal deewana, or deewane hue pagal

Btw You missed two unintentionally funny movies– ETT and Ra.one

Good job on the compilation though… Lots of movies and nicely arranged.

I loved “de dana dhan” n it was a laugh riot specially the open ending & i watched it in theatre.. U just have to be patient for first 20 minutes… Everyone frm my family had a blast tht day.. I’l request u to watch it again, may be u may like it.

Abt awara pagal dewana – may be i missed it but i missed many such as Guddi, Rafoo Chakkar, Pati Patni aur woh etc…. Thing is its difficult to compile n after compiling u will recall many movies u missed

I’l add those missing ones replacing with less deserved one after few days with many suggestions..

I would rate Garam Masala a bit higher in the list as it was a very intelligently made comedy and has a very strong repeat value..

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

You may be right but thn you wud find really difficult to justify each film to their deserved spot…

  3. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Good list, though I would include “Chupke Chupke” and “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron” in top 10 ahead of many films mentioned in.
From your list, is Angoor at position no. 31 or I am missing something in interpretation. For me, it comes in top 10.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Rajesh – i knw many wud object & i have already mentioned it but i have rated as per my personal exp while watching the film.. May be i have seen these two films lately & it failed to generate enough laugh’s… Jaane bhi do yaaro i watched after discussion with fellow sb members n chupke chupke was suggested by dhamaka… Chupke chupke i cudn’t even complete initially but after few months i saw it n it really made be laugh a lot…

Half ticket deserves to br right at the top. All other comedies are just inspiration from it. This is fraud-list.

  5. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    Dhamaal at 65th spot :(

Angoor, Chupke Chupke, Garam Masala, Choti Si Baat, Dhamaal, Jaane Bhe Do Yaaron are movies that would surely make it to my top 20.

Where is Kisi Se Na Kahna, Awara Paagal Deewana, Yeh Tera Ghar Yeh Mera Ghar ??
You also forgot Run. Vijayraj’s act in Run is 100 times more funnier than half of the movies in your top 100.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Haven’t seen Run… will keep updating the list… Bring more suggestions. I loved and had in my list “ye tera ghar ye mera ghar” and awara pagal deewana but forgot to include in it

      • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

        “”Haven’t seen Run…”"

Run is a pathetic movie of abhishek. But, the parallel story of vijay raj who come to delhi from allahabad is one of the most funny tracks of recent times.

        Here is the link.

Applause to FS for coming up with this. Agree with the most of the moives.

By Loafer do you mean Anil Kapoor’s movie? In that case Baazigar, Darrar, Khiladi etc also will qualify as these films have separate comedy track running parallel to the movie.

Why not come up with the list of movies with just comedy genre?

There is one movie I liked, ‘Hum hain Kamaal ke’ where Kader khan was deaf and Anupam blind.

No Bol Radha Bol on the list?

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

thanks shetty bhai… I have not seen hum hain kamaal ke and will include bol radha bol later on… Still looking for more suggestions… or the films that i have missed… yes its loafer of anil kapoor and when i had seen it back then it was hillarious…

One more gem I remember is ‘Pyaar kiye ja’ (The film was later remade as Haseena Maan jayegi) but PKJ is a must watch coz of Mehmood

I have already included tht movie.. Iam big fan of mahmood n amol palekar’s movies

For me chupke Chupke, Angoor, Golmaal, AAA are definitely in top…Pyaar Kiye jaa is very Hilarious movie …Mehmood is one of the best comic actor from India
No Awara Pagla Deewana in the List…
For me Khoobsuart(Rekha) is more Hilarious than new one.
Chaalbaaz, Mr India, Ishq, chori mera kaam, rafoochakker, khel khel me, Amar Akbar Anthony,Namak Halal oh so many of them ..

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Thanks for reminding me… I thought Ishq Vishq is aamir-ajay movie… will change it later… will include rafoo chakker later… the problem i am facing is its difficult to arrange it orderly… I’l remove the order of ranking so that it become easy for every one to understand and will definitely add suggested movies on a side note those of which i haven’t seen…

This is a great list. Have seen almost all the movies listed here.

I was surprised to see “Hyderabad Nawabs” in the list and then shocked that “The Angrez” is missing.

    — I would rate The Angrez much higher than Hyd Nawabs. Though I love both of these movies because I have a special connection with Hyderabad.

    No – Pyar Ka Punchnama??

  17. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Arre waah FS. So itno mehnat. Agree with a lot of choices.

Some of the comedy movies that I can watch again and again are- Golmaal, Andaaz Apna Apna, Chupke Chupke, Khoobsurat (old Rekha one), Hera Pheri, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, Dulhe Raja, Hero Number 1, Judwaa, No Entry, Deewana Mastana, Aankhen, Saajan Chale Sasural, Partner…

From your list I would not label the following as comedies:

Satte pe Saata, Chashme Buddoor, Munnabhai MBBS, Bhool Bhulaiya, 3 Idiots, Ishq, Seeta aur Geeta, Chhoti si baat, Bawarchi, Gambler, Judai, Namak Halaal, Peepli Live, Hum Hain Rahi pyar ke, Bunty aur Bubly, Khoobsurat (Sanjay Dutt), Pyar Kiya toh Darna Kya, Lage Raho Munnabhai. All these had humor of course, but the motif was not comedy.

Have not seen quite a few of the newer movies that you have listed, especially the ones between 60 to 100.

@FS “aaj ki taaza khabar” -1973. watch it if u haven’t ..and see if it finds any place in ur list

  19. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Iitianway – i thought u wud come back during OUTIM2 only…i wud like to see all recommended movies but busy for another 1-1(1/2) months.

Piyush – i knw wht u mean but comedy played a major role to the success of these movies. Some moments were so funny n ribtickling tht they became major source of attraction for repeat value.

Rockie – PKP had few comical elements but they are not the major source of attraction. It majorly reflected the reality of the young society.

“aaj ki taaza khabar” -1973. watch it if u haven’t ..and see if it finds any place in ur list

It was indeed a fine film, Kiran Kumar was lead for a change.
Goalmaal Returns was loosly based on it.

Good list FS according to your cosideration , and some movies are in list which really want to watch again & again ; i.e HeraPheri , Garam Masala, Dulhe Raja, AAA, Sajan Chale Sasural , Munna bhai MBBS , chasme baddor, MSK, hero No.1 , awara Pagal deewana, No entry , Partner etc

  22. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

As a compilation of comedy movies, this list is fine. Though order of list is highly subjective and personal. In fact the order is impossible to make generic, still I found few places little absurd even in generic sense. Putting mediocre Bombay to Goa over and above likes of Padosan or Angoor is bit too much. Similarly putting class like Namak Halaal even below like Dhol itself is comedy.

Anyways some of my favorite comedies in my personal order is :

    1. Golmaal (All time favorite)
    2. Chupke Chupke
    3. Chashme Badoor
    4. Angoor
    5. Namak Halaal
    6. Andaaz Apna Apna
    7. Hera Pheri (2000)
    8. Albela (Bhagwan Dada)
    9. Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi
    10.No Entry
    11.Aankhein
    12. Welcome

Few movies which are not exactly comedies, but I laugh out loud in certain portions like Shola aur shabnam (First half was fultoos comedy), Coolie (Many superb comedy scenes), Ishq etc ..

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

I have not seen Albela i guess… Yes shola aur shabnam had funny moments.

I already said tht many wud object as its my personal ranking… Even i may have faltered based on amount of laugh’s i had but I tried to include the best ones tht i have seen.

      • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Bholi Surat Dil Ke Khote Naam Bade Aur Darshan Chote .. Bhagwan Dada had his own unique style, And Albela is my favorite because it was first ever movie I saw on Doordarshan, it is musical comedy and I still enjoyed when I revisited 3 years back.

I had seen “Albela” on some TV channel, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Such an old Gem. When I started watching I had reservations abt the hero Bhagwan Dada, but ended up liking him when the movie finished. Recommended for old b/w movie lovers.

Yakuza bhai Big B has said openly that Bhagwan dada inspired his dancing.

BTW- today I was talking to Sharman Joshi and he said his fav is Big B. I said me too!!!!

Few movies in my opinion that shoul have been in the list…

    Haseena Maan Jaayegi
    Joru Ka Ghulam

@FS – i wud list my favourite 10 comedies. at the outset i must say that a golmaal (amol palekar) and chupke chupke do bring a smile to my face but not make me roll in the aisles. even jaane bhi do yaaron wud not have been in my list but the ‘mahabharat’ enactment scene in the climax ‘fulfilled’ that ‘criterion of mine so did the cake scene (in fact many scenes did) but i am more into ‘screamingly funny movies’ not ‘subtle and satirical’ types.

    10. pyaar kiye ja – loved mehmood, mumtaz and om prakahs, shashi kapoor and kalpana didnt do much. the ‘film story narration’ scene is a classic and has been copied in many films.

    9. welcome – the only akshay kumar film where i laughed but some how i give the entire credit to anees baazmi as all actors were ordinary (including anil kapoor who i found hilarious in no entry)

    8. haseena maan jaayegi – govinda is god of comedy. its the only film whose original (pyaar kiye ja) is also in the list. able support from kadar khan, anupam kher, satish kaushik and aroona iraani. but heroines were indifferent.

    7. golmaal returns (part 2) – this is a film that i cud die watching one day. and the sceen where i have the heart attack wud be the ‘monologue of a mute man’ where tushaar kapoor comes to inform kareena of arshad’s arrival and she thinks ajay is dead.

    6. chalti ka naam gaadi – totally performance based fun. kishore and anoop were both good ashok kumar just about ok.

    5. namak halaal – amitabh bachchan carries this film entirely on his shoulder as the director fails to hire any other comic talent (his assitant director the hugely unfunny ram sethi and om prakash in a brief role not counted) . but bachchan refuses to be bogged down and keeps the entire 3 hours long proceeding as screaming as it gets.

    4. jaane bhi do yaaron – it is the only socially relevant comedy film i love. usually i like ‘social relevance’ in serious films and want my comedies to be pure fun. to be frank i think only pankaj, om puri and satish shah acted well and rest were average (including leads naseer and ravi vasvani) but the direction was superb and the film has the maximum number of ‘original’ comic scenes.

    3. andaz apna apna – this is one film i did not like much on 1st viewing but rpeat viewings made me start liking some scenes and slowly the whole movie. needless to add i find salman hilarious in all scenes but the ‘fight without touching’ with shakti kapoor really takes the cake. and so does his attempt to copy aamir and climb a rope that wasnt tied anywhere at the top.

    2. no entry – this one cant be decipeherd. on paper i wud not have found this script least bit funny (there are no funny dialogues and watever are there look like improvisation) but wat u get on screen is hilarious. anil kapoors scene with astrologer in the park, again his scene at the doctor;s clinic, the marriage scene before the doctor scene, the honeymoon confusion right after the doctor scene (those 20 minutes are just too much) climax scene, are all hilarious. come to think of it even fardeen khan has a cpl of funny experssions. salman offcourse dominates the climax scenes with mostly ‘improvisations. i find the ‘snake’ scene too much. and off course his dialogue to fardeen – “abbey to sunny ha sunny deol nahin” – if not on paper, can be easly called the greatst piece of improvisation ever.

    1. aankhein – u cant list funny sceens of aankhein as almost every single scene is funny. allmost all performances are funny (yes even ritu shivpuri) all dialogues are funny, all improvisations are funny, all dances are funny. sadashiv’s best performance, kadar khan’s best, bindu was funny, ritu and raageshwari were funny, i have always found chunky pandey a good comedian and as for govinda – just RESPECT! he leaves everyone behind. he improvises every single second, amkes you roll on the floor, and before you can recover – he has improvised again.

sadly i cant include any dilip kumar comedies in this list as azaad and kohinoor were not funny at that level and raam aur shyaam was not pure copmedy but more of lost and found drama. but had this list been about best comic performances, raam aur shyaam wud definitely have been very close to the top.

  29. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Danish – i saw Golmal very early n everytime i revisited i enjoyed. Whereas chupke chupke n jaane bhi do yaaron i saw recently, hence they are not even in top 30.

Alfa – ram n shyam is much funnier than Azad. But dilip isn’t so natural in comedy scenes nor his timings.. He is The Best Actor for all other characters than comedy character.

  30. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@FS – for me its not about whether i enjoyed or not – offcourse everyone enjoys golmal and chupke chupke. but they did not make me fall off the chair laughing. thats my creiterion to decide my favourite comedies.

aankhien, no entry, golmal 2 do that to me.
