Bollywood’s Centenary Survey – Result – 10 Greatest Films

danish

On may 13 this year bollywood completes 100 years. 13th may 1913 was the day when dada saheb phalke’s ‘raja harishchandra’ held its 1st commercial show at mumbai. (though ‘pundalik’ was made a year earlier) so on the occasion of the ‘bollywood centenary celebration i am starting the biggest survey of NG (depending off course on your response) that will cover the best of all categories – and i am starting with the biggest category – the greatest films of 100 years of bollywood.

those of you who have not watched many old films/actors etc need not worry. to correct any biases that arise out of audience profile, exposure or preferences i am building in ‘corrective measures’. to correct the old vs new bias that usually plagues a survey conducted amongst younger viewres, the technique is to multiply the score of all films with the gap between 2013 and their release year. for instance the score of mughal e aazam will be multiplied by 53, the score of sholay will be multiplied by 38 and the score of 3 idiots will be multiplied by 4.

to correct the profile based biases (ng is on the net which is used by 10% indians of mostly upper socio economic class) the score of all films will be multiplied by their boxoffice status/score. For instance a movie that was at number 1 in top films of its year will be multilpied by 10 and the film at no 10 will be multiplied by 1.

The scoring is very simple. All you have to do is put up a COUNTDOWN  of ten greatest films of 100 years of bollywood. You can write a few lines as to why u like the film or simply put up just a list. The movie at no 1 gets a score of 10, the movie at no 10 gets a score of 1. After multplying by the ‘ number of gap years’ and then by ‘box office status’ number all score will be divided by 100 to get a smaller (more managable) number as score

I am planning to cover one category each week (best film, best actor male/female, best music, etc) and the results will be out each week.

Your list has to be in a COUNTDOWN format and two movies cant share a spot so it has to be just 10 films. If 2 movies share a spot then I will simply take the 1st movie.

The 1st comment in this series of posts will be MY countdown. Since ‘corrective measures’ have been already taken, I am not applying my footfall theory and simply listing my fave films. So can you.

@danish – Thakur Jarnail singh aur Ganga ko kaun bhhol sakta hai in filmon mein ?

You try to compare last 20 minutes of Ganga Jamuna and Adalat (Amitabh’s) and see the difference.

    No offence Yakuza !!

As I have also not seen many old films, but whichever I have seen made lasting impression on me. My Top 10 List goes like this.
    10. Masoom (shekahar kapur) – Simply for the raw emotions i got watching this movie, brilliant performances by all the cast.
    09. Me ne Pyar Kiya – for its very innocent love story and innocence of its lead characters.
    08. Hum Aap ke hay Kaun – For its superlative music and emotional touch.
    07. DDLJ – The most watched movie by me and always ready to watch it whenever came on tv. simply an outstanding love story and chemistry between sharukh and kajol.
    06. Rang de Basanti – great film, great execution of story and heart wrenching music.
    05. 3 Idiots – a Brilliant film in all aspects
    04. Khalnayak – great movie by subhash gai, superb music, brilliant madhuri and the killer performance by sanju baba, one of my personal favourites.
    03. Munna Bhai Mbbs – The genious rajkumar hirani born with this movie, simply out standing and marvelous.
    02. Taare Zameen Par – i never forget this film and the most i wept in seeing any
Bollywood movie. simply marvelous performance by darsheel.
    01. Mughal-e-Azam – There is no denying in the fact this is the greatest movie bollywood have ever made, simply every thing is so perfect about that movie, great performances, great dialogues, great music, grandeur sets, so ahead of its time.

There are many more my favourites but i can come up with this because these movies came up more than any while compiling this list.

As already said by many people choosing 10 movies from such a large pool is very difficult and for me its specially difficult as I can find something good in any movie..:)..But its a survey and we need to limit ourselves to 10 name only so just putting down the list from the movies that come to my mind..but then that also a very large number….so just putting the movie that I had watched again and again on TV inspite of so much add breaks
1)Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar : Best Hindi movie on campus rivalry in my opinion. Every time I happen to see it running on TV I make sure to complete it…might seen it around 60 times….
2)Sholay : Grand, each charcter is special in this movie from dhanoo to basanti, Kalia-SAMBA to Gabbar, soorma Bhopali to Angrezo ke zamane ka jailor, Rahim Chacha to Thakur…..and so on :) :):)
3)Pakeezah : One word can define it Grand..amazing songs…amazing picturisation and that mesmerising Meena Kumari wow….Chitraleka and Umrao Jann are my two other favourate movies on courtesan but I am little biased towards this…
4)Gol Maal(old one) : Best comic movie…All time favourate..Angoor and chupke chupke come close but this win hands down…
5)Aandhi : This is my fav Gulzar movie…some of my fav songs are from this movie but Tere bina zindagi se is GEM…Sanjeev and Suchitra Sen are at its best…superbly shown the marital differences….
6)Gadar: Ek Prem Katha : I dont know how others feel about this movie..but I find this movie quiet moving…people remember this movie for Sunny shouthing…his handpump act…but for me this movie is the love story between Tara and Skeena….love for a man for his family…
7)Pinjar : Superb movie on the conflict of human emotions, relationships on the back drop of partition…Manoj Vajpayee and Urmila are so good…Garam Hawa is one other great movie on Partition..but listing Pinjar here as I can watch it any time that’s not the case with garam Hawa
8)Rang De Basanti : I like the movie for its style of narration…comparison between two era is good….its keep people on edge…such a good use of songs…
    9) Sarfarosh : My most fav cop movie from India…I think Aamir best work till date….
    10) Socha Na Tha : Never got bored to watch this simple story of a girl and boy…I think this the best Imtiaaz work till date …

    @Sanjeev–yaar….i can understand ….
i had watched all these OLD 50?s,60?s and 70?s movies some 4-5 years back..
after that i have not watched many old movies again as i was already done with them more than twice or thrice in some cases and felt bored watching them again and again……

so i can easily relate to what u are saying..!!

It might be surprising for people who love old movies but I would rather watch ra one, tmk, mela, yuvraaj kind of movies rather than 70s movies.
I have matched around 15-20 old movies mostly of amitabh an dharmendra. Only liked sholay, one dharmendra movie (don’t know the name) and jai santoshi ma.

@ank16 – thanx for sharing but ab ye data main process kaise karoonga? unless u give a list of 10 films i wont be able to use it in the survey.

@shan – thanx. one interesting thing i am noticing is that rang de basanti is edging out 3 idiots as the most popular recent classic. infact 3 idiots is conspicuous by its absence.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

For me there are some other movies like 3 Idiot….comedy with a message…but RDB treatment….narrative style, overall impact is more and hence more repeal value …..that’s why more liked movie..

@lotus – for you it cud be true but my understanding of the situation is this…

    1. 3 idiots is 3 years old and rang de basanti is 7 years old. and a version of ‘short term nostaligia’, watever it means, seems to be at work.

    2. 3 idiots was much more popular amongst ‘wider audiences’ than RDB which was more popular amongst ‘limited audiences. this i think is a compliment to 3 idiots more than RDB.

@das – thanx. now that was one contemporary list. mkt r u wtaching?

@ank_16- century maarne ke liye opposite end ke runner ke saath khudko bhi toh batting karni padti hai..century maarne ke liye doosre log aur khudki bhi mehnat honi padti hai :D looking at the current scenario even a 50 is good,so 100 toh excellent hai :D

    @danish-my list includes-
1)andaz apna apna-for being the one movie i can watch any no of times
2)hera pheri-just a little bit short of aaa n a lil bit more than no entry
3)no entry-completed my triangle for best hindi comedies
4)3 idiots-complete entertainer in every department
5)hahk-best love story ever for me for the playful chemistry of salman n madhuri..romance for me should be playful n hahk provided bonus wid genuine emotions..salman n madhuri in hahk along wid srk-kajol in k3g is the best romantic pairing for me
6)sholay-the one yesteryear movie tht i really like
7)makkhi-i don’t think ill ever kill a fly again..the romance was so lovely and the fly was amazing..and oh ya samantha = Droool!!
8)k3g-same reason as hahk-for the playful chemistry of srk n kajol..their best performances for me…ppl think doing histionics is tough..for me i feel trying to get the chemistry right is the toughest part of acting..wen chemistry goes wrong..u get a kyun..ho gaya na!! :D
9)wanted-just the right amount of ott action with super comedy even in action scenes
    10)jaani dushman- just kidding :D
actual no 10)jaanemann-for some reason i really love this movie..akki was great, preity was fab as always..but maybe salman’s very real and natural way of crying sealed the deal for me as one of my favs romcom

@dennycrane – i havent watched makkhi – but even if it was the best ‘telugu’ movie of 2012 according to you – i dont kno if u can bring it into a countdown of bollywood.

as for oscars – i dont think they areany benchmark of quality. oscars go to thelousiest of films – slumdog millionaire, brokeback mountain, crash and manymany moreexamples are there.

@ank – didnt u read i said ‘most’ of them – not ‘all’ of them. actually come to think of it – i dont rate andaz apna apna, hera pheri, and chak de india also that highly. hich means just 4 out of 10 of shabbira’s list are certified classics and it appeared sensible to me becoz there were many lists which really left me baffled. i mean i can speak now as the voting time is closed and i cant be accused of influencing voters – the most baffling was someone ( i think waleed) putting ajay-askhay’s suhaag as the second greatest film of all time.

@FS – basically u like all movies of all stars.

@danish sorry for my mistake i didnt remember the name of the movie and i thought that was suhaag..!! actually it was SWARG of govinda and rajesh khanna.!! i dont know weather polling is closed but just for the records its SWARG not suhaag>! i came to know just as i read ur comment !!

i just thought that this movie was also called suhaag..as i have seen it long time ago..
BTW i liked suhaag also but it cant be compared with swarg as this movie had intense drama on family matters.!!

  29. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

So guys here are the results of the survey on 10 greatest films of bollywood. To begin with – 1st the ‘unprocessed’ data – which is total score of top 25 films

    1. Sholay – 105
    2. 3 idiots- 58
    3. Mughal e aazam – 48
    4. Andaz apna apna – 46
    5. Rang de basanti – 44
    6. Hum aapke hain kaun – 42
    7. Dilwale dulhaniyale jaayenge – 36
    8. Mother india – 35
    9. Hera pheri – 29
    10. Chak de india – 29
    11. Wanted – 26
    12. Tere naam – 24
    13. Namaste london – 18
    14. Munnabhai MBBS – 15
    15. Swades – 15
    16. Kal ho na ho – 15
    17. Paakeezah – 15
    18. Khalnaayak – 15
    19. Taare zameen par – 15
    20. Jo jeeta wahi sikandar – 15
    21. Kuchh kuchh hotahai – 14
    22. Wanted – 14
    23. Jis desh mein ganga behti hai – 13
    24. Anand- 12
    25. deewaar – 12

Now this is a score that has a ‘time bias’ as well as a ‘profile bias’ bulit into it. Most youngesters havent watched old movies and hence they have voted only newer movies as I suspected. Hence the need to correct that time bias for which i will multiply scores of all films with the nuymber of gap years between 2013 and their release years. so mughal e aazam gets multiplied by 53, sholay by 38 and 3 idiots by 4.

Also there are many films that may be considered a cult or classic by a handful of viewers who use internet but their boxoffice status says otherwise (andaz apna apna, tere naam, swades hera pheri). However as some members pointed out the correcting the audience profile bias’ by multiplying by its boxofffice status is not a good aidea as a film at no 10 spot in a certain year may not have had 1/10th of the footfall of the film at no1. So I will let that go. And only present ‘time bias corrected’ list of 10 greatest hindi films. Also as you can see there are 8 films with a score of 15. Its all the more reason to make these corrections to find out which are ‘real classics’ and which are there just by virtue of being released recently. So here go the calculations.

    1. Sholay – 105×38/100 = 39.9
    2. 3 idiots- 58 x 4/100 = 2.32
    3. Mughal e aazam – 48×53/100 = 25.4
    4. Andaz apna apna – 46×19/100 = 8.74
    5. Rang de basanti – 44×6/100 = 2.64

    24. Anand – 12×42/100 = 5.04
    25. Deewaar 12/38/100= 4.56

The final list of 10 greatest indianfilms – corrected for ‘time bias’ but not ‘audience profile bias’stands as

    10.Deewar – 4.56
    9. Anand – 5.4
    8. Paakeezah – 6.15
    7. Dilwaale dulhaniya le jaayenge – 6.48
    6. Jis desh mein ganga behti hai – 6.89
    5. Hum aapke hain kaun – 7.98
    4. Andaz apna apna – 8.74
    3. Mother india – 19.6
    2. Mughal e aazam – 25.4
    1. Sholay – 39.9

As we can all see – there is not much of a bias pro old films and films of all eras have been included – that is if they are genuinely considered classic enuff to be voted highly (hahk, andaz apna apna, ddlj)

If u look at the next lot of 10 u will realize how its even more fair as more and more recent films make it. And perhaps a larger sample size wud have resulted in more ‘correct’ results.

    20.Munnabhai mbbs – 1.5
    19. Kal ho na ho – 1.5
    18. Chak de india – 1.74
    17. Kuchh kuchh hotahai – 2.1
    16. 3 idiots – 2.32
    15. Terenaam – 2.4
    14. Range de basanti – 2.64
    13. kahalanayk – 3
    12. jo jeeta wahi sikandar – 3.15
    11. hera pheri – 3.77
theonly anamoly I think are the freak cases of jis deshmein ganga behti hai and khalnayak getting highly voted as copmared to say an awaara or aankhein (govinda) – but that’s got moreto do with the ‘sample size’ (only 21 ppl gave their list) than my methodology. If more ppl had voted – I am sure even these freak cases wud have been eliminated and more deserving films wud have enterd. As I kept saying if the sample size is small the results will be erroneous. In fact they are much less erronous than I thought.

Offcourse a ‘footfall based correction wud have pushed out films like phir herapheri and andaz apna apna and wud have brought in films like maine pyaar kiya and aankhein.

offcourse if u already think ‘kai po che’ is the greatest bollywood film ever made – this survey wont satisfy you.

@danish – wonderful job. I wish the sample size was bigger with more responses.

Still happy that in the final list 4 from my list are there though I expected atleast 5 with Ganga jamuna (since JDMGABH is also there though unexpectedly)

@alfa.one – there are minor anomalies in the list due to small sample size. yes even i expected more ppl familiar with older films to vote for aawara and pyaasa rather than jis desh mein ganga behti hai but 2-3 chose to and then it did not get ‘offset’ becoz of small sample size.

the thing is that films like sholay and mughle azam and HUM AAP KE HE KAUN deserve to be there in the list of the worst films which best business on boxoffice

@fazal – that view of urs was factored in – for watever it was worth – in the survey in the form of ur vote. but most ppl dont seem to think wat you do. and i am inlcuding both younger and older ppl in this.

is there any method or any rehearsel that i should do to watch sholay and mughl e azam completely?if yes then tell me

  37. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@fazal – ther is no NEED for you to watch sholay and mughal e aazam if u dont like them. nor do u have to vote for older movies/actors etc in this countdown. it has built in ‘correctors’.

u just watch and vote for the films u like. but be sure ur vote will just have the value of ’1′ – like everone else’s.
