BOMBAY TIMES (January 17, 2013)
Akshay Kumar rapped with Snoop Dogg for his film Singh Is Kinng (2008). And now, in Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26, he’s taken his passion for singing to the next level. The Bollywood superstar, who calls himself a “bathroom singer” with a keen ear for music, has rendered the romantic song Mujhme Tu with a rare honesty. The music of the film, which also stars Anupam Kher, Jimmy Shergill and Kajal Aggarwal, was released yesterday.
On his playback debut, Akki says, “In Singh Is Kinng, I just did a few lines with Snoop Dogg. But this is technically my singing debut. Frankly, you have to credit my director Neeraj and music composer MM Kreem for this song. Kreem sahab made me sit at the harmonium for six to seven hours and urged me to give it a try. He said, ‘Akshay do not bother about the sur and taal. You just sing with sincerity. I will do the rest.’ I blindly followed his advice and I would like to dedicate this song as a Valentine Day gift to all lovers.”
Says Kreem, “Mujhme Tu is a very energetic song and though Akshay’s version is not yet in the album, we plan to include it soon. When we were working on the softer, orchestrated version of the song, I thought it would be good to get him to sing. I spoke to Neeraj, who was excited, but asked me to first check if Akshay’s pitch was good. He rehearsed the song for 15 days and we recorded it in less than an hour’s time. He has a rich voice and I am happy with the outcome.”
Adds Neeraj, “Akshay took an instant liking to the song. We decided to shoot a video with him and wanted him to lend his voice to the track. He isn’t a trained singer but he was so well-versed that by the time we recorded the song, it was very easy.”
Special 26, produced by Viacom 18 Motion Pictures, releases February 8.

Akshay Kumar will take a slight detour in his first release of 2013. The actor will turn singer in Neeraj Pandey’s Special 26.
We hear it was Pandey who convinced Akshay to take to the mic. And the lyrics of the song read somewhat like: Mujhi me tu, tu hi tu basa, naino mei jaise khwab sa…
A source revealed, “Once, Neeraj heard Akshay humming a tune and suggested he give it a shot. Hesitant at first, the actor finally agreed to croon the number. Surprisingly, it turned out very well. So much so his close buddies have given him a thumbs up for it.”
In the video, Akshay will be seen singing the track in a studio.
The action star has sung a romantic number for his upcoming flick

Trust Akshay Kumar to never shy away from pushing the envelope when it comes to his action sequences. However this time, the khiladi has taken a step in altogether different direction. The actor recently recorded a romantic ballad for his upcoming film, Special Chabbis. While earlier Akshay lent his voice for a few lines in songs and rapped with Snoop Dogg in the title track of Singh is King, this is for the first time that he has sung the entire romantic number.
“Akshay has donned a new avatar as a singer by lending his voice to a romantic ballet, Mujh Mein Tu, in Special Chabbis,” shares an insider, adding that it was director Neeraj Pandey’s (of A Wednesday! fame) idea to make Akshay sing a song. “But it took the music director MM Kreem and Neeraj a month to convince Akshay to sing for their film,” says the insider.
However, once Akshay decided to sing, he left no stone unturned and trained regularly for almost five months, say sources from the production house. “The people who have worked on the music were shocked to hear the song. It didn’t seem as if it was sung by someone who is not a professional singer. It’s a soulful number and Akshay has sung it very well. He surprised everyone with the song. Anyone who hears the song will definitely be impressed with the actor’s vocal talent. There’s a lot of heart in his singing which has made the difference, plus he trained for it as well,” they add.
When contacted, Neeraj confirms it saying that Akshay has indeed made his debut as a singer. “Kreemji and I were really keen that Akshay sing this song for my film and he has sung it very beautifully,” he says.

Akshay Kumar has added yet another feather to his cap. This man does not only act, he throws mean punches and apparently can even sing! For his upcoming film with Neeraj Pandey, Akki turned singer.
The actor crooned for a romantic song in it. While he has also lent his voice for a couple of numbers earlier in Singh Is Kinng and Chandni Chowk To China, this will be Akshay’s first full- fledged track.
A source informs, “The song is called Mujh mein tu. Neeraj wanted Akshay to sing a song right from the beginning. It took music director MM Kreem and Neeraj a good month to convince Akshay.” And finally when the actor agreed, he trained for five months daily to perfect his voice. The source adds, “ He took up the challenge seriously and delivered what was simply amazing.” Neeraj says, “ Kreemji and I were really keen that he should sing this song and he has sung it beautifully.”
