‘Satyamev Jayate’ vs ‘Talaash’: Should Aamir Khan practise what he preached?

December 12, 2012 | 19

New Delhi: For close to three months Bollywood actor Aamir Khan made Indians squirm with guilt and denial and forced them to face their dark side over a series of well researched and executed social documentaries on rampant social inequalities.

The straight talking, intense host of ‘Satyamev Jayate’ tore apart the moribund traditions that manifested in gender specific selections of foetuses, caste discrimination and abuse of the elderly. He made a nation sit up and take notice of the hypocrisies that its people passed off as convention. He even moved the stone-hearted with stories so grim that they’d make your skin crawl.

All the more reason why ‘Talaash’ was such a letdown because its lead protagonist and social torch bearer compromised the stand he took months ago on showing the uneducated, ill informed, misguided and superstitious Indians the light of reason and rationalism.

Aamir roused in his ‘Satyamev Jayate’ audience a strange sense of patriotism. Of course we knew of the deep rooted corruption that plagued our medical profession. The urban Indians were also vaguely aware of the cruel Khap Panchayats diktats. We weren’t ready to look the evil in the eye until we were made to.

If Salman Khan Is Number 1-10 Who Is Next Best And Can Anyone Beat Him?

Q. Looking at business of Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Talaash, Khiladi 786, etc does it not make Ra.One look very good and at time it was trashed much more than these films?

A. In hindsight, the Ra.One 115 crore number looks good but this year the growth in business has been huge, just the films have not been good enough to show the growth. Dabangg 2 should change that though

Dabangg 2 Only Hope of Last Quarter 2012 to Create Magic at Box Office

December 12, 2012 | 1

Dabangg 2 is only hope of the last quarter of 2012 of Bollywood Box Office after the results of biggies like Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Son of Sardaar, Talaash, Khiladi 786 is more or less out. Film industry is keeping high hopes from these biggies and hoping that this is easily going to be the biggest quarter of Bollywood Film Business.

But where JTHJ and SOS just sneak past 100 crore club, Talaash & Khiladi 786 is infact struggling to enter this club. Infact it looks highly that both movies might miss the target. Although it is too early to predict the K786 collections right now, but early trend suggest that it will end somewhere in the region of 70-80 crore nett mark.

After the stupendous success of Ek Tha Tiger everyone is hoping that soon we might see a film which will enter the 200 crore club. But, no film after that even had legs to storm past 150 crore nett mark. This definitely suggest that no recent films have got universal acceptance and that’s why is the result. In past we have seen any genre which got universal acceptance has just stormed the box office. But, its sad and harsh that though we had Hits in recent films, but they didn’t do record breaking business at the box office.

With Dabangg 2 this scenario might change again as trades all hopes are imposed on it. The distributors which have not recovered its money in last few films in centers are dreaming of bumper opening of Dabangg 2. Hope record breaking days are soon around the corner. Dabangg 2 might be releasing on normal weekend and with only one additional Holiday on Christmas, but one can’t ignore Salman power at the box office. 200 is still a big dream despite 3 Idiots overhaul 3 years back. But never say never & hope that best of 2012 is saved for the last.

Will Dabanng 2 be Salman’s, Bollywood’s and 2012’s Highest Box Office Opener?

December 12, 2012 | 4

They say ‘You need a Salman to break Salman’s record’. Well, who can forget Salman Khan’s Ek Tha Tiger, that made a record of being the film with the biggest opening in the history of Indian cinema and having the biggest single day collection ever with 32.90 crores?

Ek Tha Tiger not only set these varied records at the Box Office, but also went ahead to break Salman Khan’s own record set by Bodyguard, that entered 100 Crores Club in 8 Days, and went ahead to make new record of entering the 100 Crores Club the fastest in just 6 days of release.

Now the question remains that will Salman’s upcoming film Dabangg 2 be able to beat Ek Tha Tiger’s opening day numbers and become the Highest Opening Day record holder? or Will it just land at being the second biggest opening day record holder?

Well, being a 2nd position holder doesn’t seem to be a tough challenge for a Salman Khan Movie, moreover when it holds a hit franchise like Dabangg. To bag No. 1 position in 2012 Opening Day Box Office Top 10 Movies List for Dabangg 2, Salman has to beat his own record set during Ek Tha Tiger. Well, let’s wait and watch for this, when the film releases on 21st December.

Aamir Khan sticks to Christmas release for Dhoom:3

December 12, 2012 |

Christmas seems to be lucky for Aamir Khan. He’s been part of three back-to-back blockbusters that released during the Christmas weekend in the past — Taare Zameen Par (2007), Ghajini (2008) and 3 Idiots (2009). And although the actor doesn’t have a release this year, if all goes well, his next movie, Dhoom:3, will hit theatres during Christmas next year.

Meanwhile, Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K., which was earlier rumoured to have a year-end release, might not be completed on time. “Aamir has already completed a long shooting schedule for Dhoom:3 in Chicago. He was supposed to start shooting for P.K. in January, but in all likelihood, the first half of 2013 will be devoted to wrapping up Dhoom:3. As a result, P.K. might not be completed in time for a Christmas release,” says a trade insider.

Although the film hasn’t gone on the floors yet, P.K. has already been making news. Besides the casting, the film’s shooting dates have also been in the news. The project was supposed to take off in October, but it didn’t start on schedule. Later, the director had stated that he would start the shoot in December with leading lady Anushka Sharma. But now it’s believed that the film will hit the floors only by mid-January 2013.

Other than Anushka, the film also stars TV actor Sushant Singh Rajput. In the past, names such as Imran Khan and Ranbir Kapoor were also doing the rounds for Sushant’s part. “Everyone knows that Aamir wants to focus on one movie at a time. So, he isn’t in a big hurry to start P.K. The movie will be shot in and around Rajasthan and Delhi,” says the source.

Do we only send ‘nice’ Indian films to the Oscars?

Do we only send ‘nice’ Indian films to the Oscars?

We’ve only been nominated thrice in around six decades, never won, and yet, it makes filmmakers care so much they hurl the juiciest insults at each other once every year. The Best Foreign Film category at the Academy Awards looks to be a perpetual thorn in the backside of the desi film industry. However, we’d like to clarify – we’re not taking up the case for the aggrieved parties who’re upset each year because their film was ‘better’ just because they think so, or made more money, as if that’s what the Oscars were after.

Records that Dabangg2 chases.

December 12, 2012 | 18

Opening Day – 31cr – ETT
Biggest Single Day – 31cr – ETT
Opening Weekend (First 3 Days) – 56cr – ETT
Opening Week (First 7 Days) – 125cr – ETT
Opening Week (Extended) – 143cr – ETT
Lifetime – 202cr – 3I

** All numbers from BOI.com

So we can see that Salman is essentially competing with Salman himself i.e., with his previous release ETT. If we leave the lifetime record all other record’s are currently owned by Salman.

There are other records like non-holiday weekend etc, but if you see for ETT first 3 days there was ONLY 1 holiday and 2 working days.
Add to it, that was month of Ramadan so a huge chunk of people stay away from movies.
So I am not considering the non holiday weekend record separately. I believe that is also held by ETT (first 3 days).

My Predictions for Dabangg 2

December 12, 2012 | 34

In the range of 130 cr. Give or take 10%.

Why it has no shot at reaching anywhere near 200 cr:

1. To do tat you have to be a big success in multiplexes. I see no chance of that happening.

2. All the four films of Salman, contrary to what many in the forum falsely believe, were different from one another: Dabang, Ready, Bodyguard, ETT. The genres, the look and feel and even the heroines were different.

3. Dabnagg 2 is a pale shadow of Dabangg 1, with every song a situational and melodic replica of a corresponding song in Dabangg 1.

4. The pairing with Sonakshi Sinha adds to the staleness. She is the heroine multiplex audiences are least excite about today..especially if she presents herself in the same old desi avatar.
