|After the weekend’s screenings, Skyfall was on the precipice of breaking Avatar‘s gargantuan £94 million UK box office record, with its return to Britain’s number one spot helping it hit approximately £93.8 million.
Now, after more receipts have come in, the all-important 94 number has been reached, making Skyfall the biggest-selling movie in the history of British cinema. That precise number? £94,277,612. £94,277,612 in 40 days, no less, which is all the more staggering considering Avatar got to that number with the help of both inflated 3D ticket prices and an 11 month timespan.
In other words, as Kim Newman wrote in Empire‘s review, “One thing’s certain: James Bond will return…”, making the pressure on screenwriter John Logan all the greater as he attempts two connected sequels for Bond 24 and 25.
Globally, Skyfall has earned around $870 million at the time of writing, trouncing the $599 million set by Casino Royale back in 2006 and the $591 million from Quantum Of Solace in 2008. Continue reading
Pakistani censors have banned advertisements for Bollywood star Akshay Kumar’s latest film Khiladi 786 because the number 786 is revered by some Muslims and could hurt their sentiments. The Censor Board has directed cinema halls and distributors not to release the movie’s trailers and to remove billboards for the film.Khiladi 786 is yet to be cleared by the censors for screening in Pakistan. The censors barred the advertisements as the number 786 is revered by some Muslims and they could find the name of the film objectionable, the Dawn newspaper reported. Censor Board Chairman Raja Mustafa Haider told the daily: “The appearance of banners for the film in Rawalpindi and other areas was brought to my notice and I asked the City District Government Rawalpindi to remove all of them.”
He did not disclose the final decision about the fate of the movie. “We will decide it when the movie comes to us, before screening in the cinema houses,” he said.
Haider further said the Censor Board had managed to convince distributors to present the film without the number 786. The movie was originally scheduled to be released on December 7. Film distributor Suhail Mukhtar said the Censor Board had the legal right to alter the name of a film if it was found to be objectionable. However, he said the screening of the film would not stop unless it had “objectionable dialogues and scenes”.
Like other Bollywood stars, Akshay Kumar has a sizeable following in Pakistan.
Akshay Kumar may have stopped working with Priyanka Chopra ever since they were linked and Akshay’s wife Twinkle sounded a red alert. But pairing up with her cousin Parineeti seems to be okay for Akshay Kumar.
The Ishaqzaade actress has been confirmed to star opposite the Khiladi in AR Murugadoss’ Hindi remake of the Tamil action thriller Thuppakki being produced by Vipul Shah. The original features Vijay and Kajal Aggarwal.
Says a source, “Of late, Akshay has been working with newer actresses
like Sonakshi Sinha in Rowdy Rathore and Anushka Sharma in Patiala
House. So this time he will team up with another youngster Parineeti.
According to B-Town reports, names like Deepika Padukone and Katrina Kaif were being considered. But a source close to Murugadoss informs, “Parineeti has been confirmed for the role. Priyanka has no clue about it!” South director Murgadoss made his B-Town entry with the Aamir Khan-starrer Ghajini in 2008.
Cocktail actress Diana Penty was initially considered for the Hindi
remake of Thuppakki. However when Akshay Kumar learnt that Diana was from the same agency with which Akshay had a problem with, he refused to work with her. It may be recalled that Nargis Fakhri was signed for Khiladi 786 and she had also signed a three-film deal with Akshay’s production house. But Akshay had differences over the contract with the agency and Nargis was replaced with Asin. It is also rumoured that Parineeti was angling for the role of Mary Kom in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s production directed by Omung Kumar Bundela. But her cousin Priyanka Chopra bagged the role.
