Ultimately, content dictates. After the euphoria around Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar settled, courtesy the hype and hoopla that these films used to promote themselves, the box office collections prove that both films have nothing to crow about.Even our earlier estimates of 73.30 cr for JTHJ proved to be higher and the collections have actually settled at 68 cr;and SOSs six-day collection estimate that was 60 cr came down to 57.55 cr.
You can see that the official claims made by both production houses (JTHJ 80.73 cr) and (SOS 66.02 cr) are far from what the ground reality is.
Distributor Girish Johar maintains,Both films dropped after the Diwali season. Now collections have become slow. Till November 25,JTHJ now stands at around 93.40 cr and SOS stands at 80.90 cr.So the difference is around 13 cr.

The man takes his much-touted rivalry with various actors with a pinch of salt.
What’s a Rs 100 crore to a king? His latest film Jab Tak Hai Jaan has already touched the magic mark and is still going steady at the box office. But the King remains unfazed.
SRK laughed and said, “It’s just a new yardstick. Earlier, it was either a silver jubilee or 100 days… Now, people have a yardstick even for trailers! They will keep changing and there will be a new benchmark every few years. I think every film will now make Rs 100 crore but each film will still have its own uniqueness.”
The success of Jab Tak Hai Jaan has not come without its fair share of pressures. First the demise of his mentor Yash Chopra and then the tussle of his producers with Ajay Devgn. Also, the effect it could have on his friendship with Ajay Devgn’s wife Kajol.
“Ajay might be having some righteous things in his mind about the way distribution should be done. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is not my film although I have a part of it. I have a beautiful relationship with Kajol and I have met Ajay a few times. After Yashji’s (Chopra) death we were all in a different zone and I did not want to remain in this space,” said SRK. Tees Maar Khan ( 2010) was a debacle for Akshay Kumar. Although the film managed to make its share of money, it was openly thrashed by most critics. However, looks like Akshay is not done with playing the role of a conman yet. Reports suggest that the actor will be donning a similar avatar in Neeraj Pandey’s next directorial venture, Special Chabbis. The film, which will see Akshay play the lead role, opposite south star Kajal Aggarwal, is based on a real-life heist. A source close to the project tells us, “Akshay’s role as a conman in Tees Maar Khan was very convincing, the audiences seem to have liked it. He has the knack of understanding his characters well And looking at the way Special Chabbis is turning out, he’s ready to deliver another hit.” The film brings to light a real-life incident that occurred on March 19, 1987. An unknown man posing as a CBI officer got 26 men to raid a jewellery store in Opera House Mumbai. They walked away with jewellery worth lakhs and left the jewellers across Zaveri Bazaar shocked. Special Chabbis releases early next year, and will probably clash with Rajnikanth’s Kochadaiyaan, which stars Deepika Padukone.
He may not be a part of the famous Khan trio. However, Irrfan Khan is managing to throw a surprise or two at a regular interval, and how. The biggest one was seen over the weekend gone by when his international film Life Of Pi, despite being made in English, managed to trounce biggies like Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar. Singer-composer Himesh Reshammiya, who has co-produced ‘Khiladi 786′ with Akshay Kumar, is sure it will be yet another Rs.100 crore film for the actor. “As far as Rs.100 crore is concerned, I am 100 percent sure and pray that the record Akshay Kumar has set with ‘Rowdy Rathore’ and ‘OMG- Oh My God!’ this year, in ‘Khiladi 786′ we will surely cross that figure,” the 39-year-old said here Tuesday on the sidelines of a college fest.
Reshammiya was present at the event with Akshay and the film’s
leading lady Asin Thottumkal.
Reshammiya also spoke highly of Akshay’s chemistry with veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty. “Mithun da and Akshay’s jodi has always been a hit. Mithun ji is a legend. He is playing Asin’s elder brother Tatya Tukaram Tendulkar who is a don and has done fantastic work,” he said.
Directed by Ashish R. Mohan,’Khiladi 786′ hits theatres Dec 7.
Talaash, which releases this friday, marks the return of Aamir Khan to commercial cinema after the record-breaking 3 Idiots (2009). As expectedly, his fans are waiting with bated breath to catch the flick FDFS. But the most important question is: Can Talaash break the opening day record for a non-holiday release? Can it post a respectable total? After all Aamir’s last two commercial films were game-changers and record-setters.
Salman Khan’s Ready which released in June 2011 on a normal day set the record for the first day with 13 crores. Akki’s RR this year broke that record to collect 15 crores on its first day. Can Talaash go up a notch higher?
Ready and RR were masala entertainers, helped by 1-2 catchy numbers (Dhinka Chika, Pritam Pyaare), which were liked by the public and helped the movies in garnering good totals. Incidentally both were also remakes. But Talaash is on an altogether different wicket. The genre is that of a suspense thriller and such films are not known to post big numbers although critics may appreciate them. Also the music of Talaash isn’t exactly dominating the charts to help the opening.
The one thing that is favouring Talaash is BRAND AAMIR. He literally has a huge fan following in the multiplexes where his past many films have created records. The receipts generated from these multiplexes will be huge and many help in setting up a big first day total. Also Talaash is set in Mumbai and this territory is dominated by Aamir. So one expects Mumbai to score big again. The worrying factor for Talaash will be the reception it gets from single screens, which honestly doesn’t look too bright. But so was the case with the cult movie Rang De Basanti, which trended beautifully with the help of multiplexes. The movie went on to triple its opening week total (17 cr) and was only the second film of the decade to cross the 50 cr total till Fanaa released. 3 Idiots was another such film with not many giving it a fair chance at the BO terming it as too ‘multiplex friendly’. But it’s an altogether different story that it managed to garner approx. 70 cr nett from single screens alone. Continue reading
