21-year-old girl arrested for Facebook post slamming Bal Thackeray

November 19, 2012 | 36

Police on Sunday arrested a 21-year-old girl for questioning the total shutdown in the city for Bal Thackeray’s funeral on her Facebook account.

Another girl who ‘liked’ the comment was also arrested.

The duo were booked under Section 295 (a) of the IPC (for hurting religious sentiments ) and Section 64 (a) of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Though the girl withdrew her comment and apologized, a mob of some 2,000 Shiv Sena workers attacked and ransacked her uncle’s orthopaedic clinic at Palghar, north of Mumbai.

The 21-year-old arrested for her Facebook post was among many who aired opinions on social networking sites.

JTHJ – My Movie Review (3.5 on 5) – The ‘Khan’dom is back :) -From NG member Krish

November 19, 2012 |

Halfway through the first half, Meera (katz) who is confused about her feelings meets her estranged mother and her lover (Mr and Mrs Rishi Kapoor in a lovely cameo) and the mother sums up her reason for eloping with her lover succintly with the line “Har Ishq Ka Ek Waqt Hota Hai. Woh Humara Waqt Nahi Tha. Iska Yeh Matlab Toh Nahi Ki Woh Ishq Nahi Tha”. Chopra weaves a romance using this line as the central premise of his final movie – a movie that is forever destined to be remembered his swansong and whose title “Jab Tak Hai Jaan” add so many layers of intrigue just because of his preordained death. Fortunately the movie has more going for it than not for most of its 3 hour running time.

We are introduced then to a dare devil Major Samar Anand of the bomb disposal squad christened – The Man who cannot die – because he doesnt wear a bomb suit when the reality is that he tries to die every single minute. A discovery channel 20 something reporter Akira (Anushka) chances upon his diary and we come to know that Samar was a odd job specialist in his younger days in love with an engaged heiress Meera (Katz) who in turn had a peculiar give and take relationship with Jesus wherein she will give up things that she like for favors from the almighty. So when Samar and Meera gets too intimate for comfort and a possibly fatal accident happens to Samar, Meera in a fit of impulse resolves to stay away from Samar in return for his life when in reality all she had to do was to teach Samar ways to cross the road or drive a motor bike without getting hit!! Samar leaves Meera and resolves to die (though it is not clear why he didnt just hang himself if he had to die to prove Meera wrong).

Chopra is a master in weaving a romance specially when it involves his two pet subjects – fate and God. So however much flimsy the premise of a movie sounds (I intentionally wrote the above para to make the story sound as flimsy as possible) Chopra’s conviction and his handling of ‘moments’ (there are plenty of those here) are so terrific that you are able to believe in his films. JTHJ is no exception and though the movie is saddled by atleast one clunky plot line involving retrogade amnesia and a weak central heroine (the worst Chopra heroine ever) you are able to ignore both these flaws to a large extent.

It was important that the central love story (between SRK and Katz) here is really strong but we are saddled with such a frigid and emotionless Katrina that you hardly feel for anything here (specially when they reunite – remember how we were so involved when SRK and Kajol reunite in DDLJ??.Hell, even VeerZaara – Chopra worst effort scored on this front.). Katz is so plastic its not even amusing. The role needed a better actress and this is the biggest drawback of the movie (I would have cast Priyanka). SRK is distincly awkward when he is with Katz and I dont blame him as its tough to be passionate in front of a plastic zombie even when she is half naked.

1.5/5 – Jab Tak Hai Jaan: failure of a farewell

November 19, 2012 | 19

Thoughts before the film: I hope the two girls die, Yash Chopra brings in Kajol/Rani Mukherjee and she lives happily ever after with Shah Rukh Khan.
For those who have grown up watching and enjoying Yash Chopra’s romantic films, namely Chandni, Silsila, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara, to name but a few, Jab Tak Hai Jaan became one of the year’s most highly anticipated films. With Shah Rukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma in the lead roles, the late director’s final venture was nothing less than star-studded either. Hence, expectations were kept high, leading to tickets bought in advance for full-house cinemas throughout the busy week of Diwali.

“You can’t speak Hindi and you want to learn Punjabi? Ha!”
The story:
Jab Tak Hai Jaan is about a 21-year old documentary filmmaker, Akira (Anushka Sharma) who, after finding and reading the diary of the perpetually grumpy Major Samar Anand (Shah Rukh Khan), a bomb disposal expert, decides to make a film about him. The diary presents Akira with a flashback of Samar’s life in London where he met, fell in love with and left Meera (Katrina Kaif) ten years ago to go to Ladakh. Meera is an engaged, churchgoing Punjabi girl, who falls in love with Samar while learning Punjabi from him. When Samar meets with a fatal accident, Meera goes to Jesus and asks him to save her beloved. In return, she would never meet him again. Circumstances lead Samar back to London, where he meets with another accident and gets retrograde amnesia, forgetting everything that had happened since his first accident. The doctor believes it’s best to bring everyone Samar knew 10 years ago to help him retrieve his memory. Meera makes Samar believe they have been married for ten years but stops herself from getting close to her because of her promise to Jesus. Not seeing results from her love, Meera asks Akira to go in front of him to remind him of his recent experiences. Nothing seems to work until Samar sees a bomb in a train which he suddenly knows how to defuse. Samar subsequently remembers everything, gathers he has been lied to by Meera, and returns to his life in Ladakh. Akira’s documentary is successful and Meera follows Samar back to Ladakh, realising Jesus kept Samar alive to be with her.
Thoughts during the film: I hope Katrina Kaif dies.

“You’re 21. I’m 31. This isn’t creepy at all!”
The goods:
Shah Rukh Khan. There’s a broody SRK in an army uniform on a motorbike AND a romantic, charming SRK playing the guitar in the same film.
Anushka Sharma. Despite having done the same role in every film she’s been in, she’s the only one who played her role well without being annoying, all while looking great.
The music. A.R. Rahman. Need I say more?
The bads:
Shah Rukh Khan. Before watching it, you’d think he’d do the same thing he’s done innumerable times before, but he’s really just weird and awkward. Playing a character 20 years younger than his actual age with girls who are old enough to be his daughters doesn’t help either. In addition, when he gets retrograde amnesia, he turns into Rizwan Khan. Yes, SRK as an autistic is the same as SRK as an amnesiac.
Katrina Kaif. She can’t act. She can’t dance. She can’t smile. She can’t speak Hindi. And she’s too old to play a 21-year old. In short, she’s useless. I will hereby stop putting her in my list of ‘goods’ just for being pretty.
The script. Quite possibly, one of the worst scripts any Yash Chopra film has had, with the exception of Parampara. If you don’t remember it, you’re probably better off.
3 hours. A bad film that’s three hours long is a pain in the backside (quite literally).
The comparison. Being a Yash Chopra film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan will inevitably be compared to his previous films. It doesn’t even come close to the standard set by classics such as Darr, Dil Toh Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara. It’s not touching, it’s not that romantic and it’s way too long.

47 and STILL playing a 28-year old!
The rating:
Keeping in mind everything else the late director has made, I give Jab Tak Hai Jaan a mere 1.5 out of 5, with the music by A.R. Rahman being its saving grace. Being an ardent fan of Yash Chopra-SRK films, I went in expecting (and hoping for) a corny, romantic film. I didn’t get one.
The last word:
Jesus is the star of the show. The power he seems to have on Katrina Kaif’s character and her relationship with SRK is unbeatable. It’s kind of like he’s looking down at them and laughing at their stupidity.
Thoughts after the film: I wish they all died.

Son Of Sardaar Collects 59 Crore Nett Over Its Extended Weekend
Monday 19th November 2012 11.30 IST

Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Son Of Sardaar has collected 59 crore nett approx over its extended six day weekend. The collections on Sunday were similar to Saturday as Maharashtra was shut at many places due to the funeral of Shiv Sena leader Balasaheb Thackeray. The film collected around 8.50 crore nett on Sunday.

Even in other circuits there was not the normal growth associated with a Sunday as the film had released on Tuesday. Still the film got closest to Jab Tak Hai Jaan on Sunday as that film had higher collections in the Maharashtra area so lost more than Son Of Sardaar. The film collected 34 core nett in the first three days and 25 crore nett in the next three days and suffered to the tune of 2.50 crore in Maharashtra.

The territorial figures of the extended weekend will be published in the evening.

Ajay Devgn states why only Sanjay Dutt could be a part of Son of Sardar!

November 19, 2012 |

Directed by Ashwini Dhir, action-comedy Son of Sardar starring Ajay Devgn, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Juhi Chawla is doing pretty well. Though it’s completely an Ajay film but one can’t underrate the equal presence made by Sanjay Dutt.

Post Agneepath, where Sanjay overpowered lead actor Hrithik Roshan, one can easily say that SOS is the second venture where he has an upper hand on the hero.

Ajay Devgn states why only Sanjay Dutt could be a part of Son of Sardar!Even Ajay agrees to the same and stating why he chose Sanjay for the role, he gave logical reasons saying, “I will tell you something. When people ask me why Sanjay Dutt?’ tab mera unse sirf ek hi sawaal hota hai ki mujhe ek actor batao jo iss age group ka character play kar sake? Someone who romances does comedy and eventually after standing in front of the hero makes an entire audience gasp and feel worried that ab toh hero mara, yeh ladh nahi paaega! That’s the kind of power which was needed in an actor.

Ponty Chadha murder: Before the bloodbath, an SOS call to police

November 19, 2012 |

Forty minutes before he allegedly gunned down his brother, Ponty Chadha, over a disputed farmhouse and was in turn shot dead by the liquor tycoon’s henchmen, Hardeep Singh made a frantic call to the police control room, investigations have revealed. The police also said it was still not

very clear who shot whom.
The PCR call was reportedly prompted by Ponty and his men barging into the farmhouse, in south Delhi’s Mehrauli area, which was in Hardeep’s possession after a court battle.

“The first call to the PCR was at 11.50am. The last call Hardeep made was to his lawyer at 12.24pm. Minutes later, the PCR received another call about the shootout. Hardeep was aware something was going to happen and called the police before he reached the farmhouse,” said a senior police officer, requesting anonymity.

“The trigger was Ponty’s taking possession of the disputed farmhouse. When Hardeep was informed about it by his men, he rushed to the spot and fired at Ponty after a brief altercation,” the officer added.

November 19, 2012 | 1

Controversial businessman Ponty Chaddha, who was killed along with his brother in an exchange of fire between the two men and their security staff over a family dispute in New Delhi on Saturday, lived and died for money.

Rising from extremely humble beginnings, Chaddha raised a Rs 50,000 crore (Rs 500 billion) empire, sprawling across large parts of North India — Uttar Pradesh , Uttarakhand , Punjab , Haryana and Rajasthan — where he nearly monopolised the liquor trade.

According to sources in Ramnagar, a small town on the UP-Uttarakhand border, Chaddha’s father Kulwant Singh sold fried fish from a handcart parked outside a country liquor shop.
