An Open Letter To Mr Uddhav Thackeray

Dear Mr Uddhav Thackeray,

Firstly and very honestly, it’s really very unfortunate to know about the demise of your father, Mr Balasaheb Thackeray. His contribution has been immense in shaping Maharashtra’s history and also in shaping the lives of Maharashtrians. His legacy will live on for sure. May his soul rest in peace.

At the same time, I would like to bring to your notice the fear mania that gripped the city after news came out that your father has left for heavenly abode. People ran out of their offices and workplaces to reach home. Shops downed their shutters immediately. This is entirely a personal choice and I would not like to comment on it. But there are certain shopkeepers who preferred to keep their shops open. Also, chemists and milk shops rightfully chose not to follow the herd. Certain hooligans, according to reports, compelled them to shut shop as well. Some even pelted stones at certain stores. Buses and trains were stopped, which were full of scared people hoping to reach their homes as fast as they can. The goons toured the city in groups and compelled people to mourn for the demise of Mr Thackeray. Diwali celebration is still on and many homes were lit with Diwali lights and lanterns. Such people were ordered, not requested, to shut off the lights or else…

This is a wrong time to talk about these things with you as you have suffered arguably the biggest loss of your life. But do you really feel this is justified? People are in their homes and malls and shops are closed not necessarily by respect, but because of fear. After all, who desires that a mob destroys their shop? And do you think this is the correct way? Respect is earned and your father did that and the evidence is the lakhs of people who have turned up at Matoshree and at Shivaji Park. But respect is not forced and the Sena hooligans are trying to do that by forcing the whole city to mourn, even if they don’t want to, for entirely personal reasons. Most importantly, is it fair for to do all this in the name of your father, who would have never done something like this ever in his lifetime? Isn’t that shameful on the part of Sena workers?

I know there’s little you can do right now and I am not asking for any immediate move from you. My only request is – make sure all the Sena workers who did mischief on the roads in the name of your father be told to surrender to the cops and that they get strictest punishments. At the same time, if possible, on behalf of these troublemakers, apologize to the Mumbaikars for the inconvenience caused to them. Believe me, it would go a long way in winning the trust of Mumbaikars and will ultimately benefit Shiv Sena. I hope if this message ever reaches to you, it’s taken in the right spirit.

Thanks,
Fenil Seta

What I can say is if 90% of shops and offices were shut for Respect ….
than That 10% you are talking about doesn’t matter….

Thank yourself that Its India were a 25 lakhs of people came out to say good bye to their hero…

Not a country where there are Protest against the killing of an International Terrorist.

  3. ank_16n

and to say that people shut there shops due to fear ….
than i want to tell u that some 2 and half years ago this very same shiv saina were protesting for the ban of My name is khan……
But My name is khan was released on the day it was supposed to release….

and those so called people who are in fears now were coming full out to watch My Name is khan……
If they weren’t in fears then how can they be in fears now…..

And to those who are saying there is force full shutdown of shops then sorry you may be living in some other country….

i think over 2 million people in Today Funeral put tight slpa on faces of all who think People shut down shop or return home because of Fear.

He had shown how much he was loved and respected.

So I hope now those who make judgement on basis of news channel like NDTV and CNN and mostly by other paid media also, will keep silent.

It is like what lady , who herself criticizing BT yesterday, said ” Bolti Band”.

“So I hope now those who make judgement on basis of news channel like NDTV and CNN and mostly by other paid media also, will keep silent.”

Thats what I was trying to say all day. You put it very correctly there.

I am in little dilemma here… It’s beyond my comprehension why 2 million people come for a funeral. But at the same time I agree with rudresh… 2 million (20lacs/ 20% of Mumbai) coming out to salute Balasaheb is itself a proof of people shut down mumbai bcoz of love and respect and not fear. (atleast 90% people. 10 % might be out of fear.)

  6. fenil_seta

Just to set records straight-those 20 lacs ppl are not all from Mumbai…many were party workers from other cities.

And all those who have doubt…please go and ask the shopkeepers the real reason for shutting shop or all others who rushed to their homes in overcrowded buses/trains as soon as news broke that Mr Thackeray is no more.

I don’t watch NDTV/CNN…but whatever news channels/newspapers I surfed/read today were full of praises for Mr Thackeray so this ‘paid media’ thing goes above my head.

Or did they add extra zero? It also depicts the mindset of State fundamentalists n how they can be socially n politically motivated. When whole bollywood is infuenced in chamchagiri of thackrey’s then how come common man is restrained? But when a person can be messiah for many n terrorist for many then definitely this kind of supporters/followers/worker/aquaintance/haters/critics has to be witnessed or bound to make noise which also puts him in an Iconic personality – though u love it/regret it, live with truth or in denials but facts remains facts.

Bro..You summed up the whole situation very well. :D

acha hua margaya sala ab mumbai wale sukoon se rahe ge, he was the biggest terrorist and goon, killer of thousands of muslims in gujrat with narendar modi and destroyer of holy babri mosque.

  9. rockie_Dabhangg2

    @Fenil:

Whenever a big political personality passes away then shops and businesses are closed. Its not the first time that some political person has died and such a situation has come up.

I remember when Rajkumar (film actor from Karnataka) died then Blore was at stand still. Did you write such a letter then?? No … Why NOT??

    —-
In the times when leaders all across India are busy licking the HIGH COMMAND in Delhi, there was this one person … one TIGER who rose against all odds and challenged them.

The man deserves respect and shops and businesses are closed just out of RESPECT, respect from the people of Maharashtra giving him last salute.

  10. TopShot_Now Its Dabangg2

@rockie.. agree with you here as well..
Its not like shops and city was closed first time because someone died. It happens with a death of every major politician/person. Yes. agree it happened on a large scale this time.(last time it happened in maharashtra when Babasaheb Ambedkar died.) But thats because of the popularity of the man. I again reiterate here, those who are never been to maharashtra or never experienced the effect of Balasaheb, plz do not make a comment based on News Feeds.

@fenil.. “Just to set records straight-those 20 lacs ppl are not all from Mumbai…many were party workers from other cities.”

Bro.. doesn’t that prove my point even more. lacs of people coming out from different cities just to see a dead man for last time, isn’t that the love/respect for a man? I don’t think you can use fear element or threat to make lacs of people move from one city to other just to attend a funeral, do you?

your other point- “And all those who have doubt…please go and ask the shopkeepers the real reason for shutting shop or all others who rushed to their homes in overcrowded buses/trains as soon as news broke that Mr Thackeray is no more.”

Yes. some shopkeepers had closed their shop out of fear. But they are only 10-15%. rest closed their shop out of respect. Trust me, I live here for like since my birth.
Other example, In my city there is not much influence of Shivsena/MNS. City is Congress/NCP fortress. Still all shops were closed on saturday itself.
and on monday, Vyapari Sangh(led by a muslim) in our city is closing down their business to pay homage to balasaheb. While ShivSena has explicitly said that they are not declaring any Bandh on Monday.

I am not trying to convert bad image of ShivSena/Balasaheb in to good one for you guys. I believe you have your reasons.Just saying that don’t take it to extreme level. (Fenil, advice is more for others than you. If article above is any refection, I know you are a wise guy.)

a girl in palghar, mumbai has been arrested by mumbai police for her post against shiv sena on fb.ever her friend who liked that comment has been arrested.the girls uncles clinic has been ransacked by shiv sainiks.i advise all the people here, especially those living in maharashtra not to make comments against any politician.kya pata kal kya ho jaye.and frankly speaking, nothing is going to change in india.so its better we keep our discussion limited to movies only.

    1. ank_16n

      dr. Nick——
u can’t generalize one case in a population of millions in mumbai itself…..

      and
please do visit Sites like Twitter and facebok u whould understan there were thousands of People twitting bad to even shit against shiv sena were all of them were all arrested…

Even in US a uk guy was arrested for posting something about Obama….
so by your logic US is also being run by some goons…..

just grow up and stop making news out of nothing….
1 case in Millions make it an exception which can take place anywhere in the world…..

  13. dr.nick

a thing which is wrong cannot be justified.even if its one in a million billion or trillion.and it is wrong irrespective of the place it happens be it india, usa or namibia.that girl had just questioned the rationale behind closing down a entire city not out of respect but fear.FYI there were several incidents of shops and signboards being vandalised.do u realise how much loss the govt has suffered.and ppl still justify such things.i am a marathi born nd brought up in maharashtra.i know the ground realities as my maternal grandfather was an MLA.politics is a rotten field and nothing good is ever happen here.after watching RDB i was influenced nd thought koi country perfect nahi hoti usse perfect banana padta hai.but reality is if ever a good guy gets in politics there can be only 3 outcomes.1-he will be killed.2-he will be framed in some case and jailed or 3-he will himself become part of this corrupt system.its better to get your degree and go to some better place.

    1. ank_16n

“”frankly speaking, nothing is going to change in india.so its better we keep our discussion limited to movies only.””

India is still much better than 90% of other countries in the world…..there is no need to change just because some Pseudo thinks there is need for a change……

      and one more thing…..

“”that girl had just questioned the rationale behind closing down a entire city not out of respect but fear””

yeah like saying that Bal thackeray jesse log roj marte hai aur jinda hote hai…..
u find this Rational but for me thats crap……and what would she had thought if someone would have said same thing about her parents……
bolna aasaan hai jab khud pe aati hai toh Sabki phat jaati hai…..
there is no problem in criticising any one…but in doing so u should mind ur language….jokes can be taken but Insulting someone death is Not….

  14. dr.nick

who has insulted bal thackeray?just tell me one thing.do u personally agree that sainiks “FORCED” shops etc to be closed when the owners wanted to keep it open?if u support such actions then theres no use arguing with a person like u.
