Film shows cancelled in Mumbai in honour of Bal Thackeray

Mumbai: With emotions running high following Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray’s death, cinema house owners in the city have decided to keep the theatres closed Saturday night and Sunday for security reasons. Film screenings in city theatres were cancelled on Saturday as soon as the news of Sena chief’s demise spread. “For the time being, we have cancelled all the shows in Mumbai. We will decide about running the shows tomorrow after assessing the situation,” an official of PVR cinemas said.

Manoj Desai, owner of Gaiety, Galaxy and Maratha Mandir said, “Yes, we have cancelled all the shows from 6 pm today till tomorrow, as we fear that anything might happen tomorrow. We don’t want to cause any trouble. From Monday, we might run it normally.” Girish Wankhede, deputy GM-Corporate Communications and Public Relations of Cinemax said, “The moment we heard the news, we cancelled all the shows for today and tomorrow across Maharashtra. We have around 56 screens in the state. We have given refund of the tickets.”

Ashish Saxena, Chief Operating Officer- Big Cinema “For today we have suspended all the shows and also advance bookings. We will decide upon tomorrow depending upon the inputs provided by the local police.”

Huzefa, I request you that plz do not put up such comments, without ascertaining ground level facts.

Bala Sahab was very popular amongst the pav bakers of Mumbai, pre-dominantly muslims.

He also gave a space (behind his own house) to Tablighi Jamaat ppl for holding a convention, when they were finding it difficult to find even an inch of land in Mumbai.

Huzefa aisa nahi hai. Agar hota to main bolne ki himmat rakhta hoon.

He dislikes anti-national people (jo khayein India ka aur gayein kisi aur ka) be it from any community.

I had the fortune of meeting him in Mumbai personally, just for 3 minutes, and he is not like what people percieve him to be.

@Tangoji, I dont know much about Bal Thackeray, but with all respects I will say this much about your statement that “He disliked anti-national people”

He defines anti-national. Maharashtra is not a nation, India is a nation. For him only “Marathi manoos” had certain rights and people from other states didnt. He was for Maharashtra and against India, for Marathis against Indians. He was THE anti-national.

I dont know how much he was against Muslims per se, but if you agree he was “Hindu nationalist” .. I ask you what does that term mean? It means a nation of Hindus only .. going against India’s constitution of being a secular country and a nation of Hindus and Muslims and everyone else. So again, he was THE anti-national.

To add to this conversation, below is a link of the top 5 controversial statements of Bal Thackeray:

    http://www.indiatimes.com/india/bal-thackeray-most-controversial-quotes-47216.html#list_start

    1) Bal Thackeray: On Hindu Suicide Bombers
“Islamic terrorism is growing and Hindu terrorism is the only way to counter it. We need suicide bomb squads to protect India and Hindus.”

    2) Bal Thackeray: On Muslims
“They [Muslims] are spreading like a cancer and should be operated on like a cancer. The… country should be saved from the Muslims and the police should support them [Hindu Maha Sangh] in their struggle just like the police in Punjab were sympathetic to the Khalistanis.”

    3) Bal Thackeray: On Hitler
“Hitler did very cruel and ugly things. But he was an artist, I love him (for that). He had the power to carry the whole nation, the mob with him. You have to think what magic he had. He was a miracle…. The killing of Jews was wrong. But the good part about Hitler was that he was an artist. He was a daredevil. He had good qualities and bad. I may also have good qualities and bad ones.”

    4) Bal Thackeray: On Biharis
“They [Biharis] are not wanted in southern India, Assam and also Punjab and Chandigarh. The Biharis have antagonised local population wherever they had settled. The UP-Bihari MPs have shown their ingratitude towards Mumbai and Maharashtra with an anti-Marathi tirade in Parliament.”

    5) Bal Thackeray: On Muslims

“While 26/11 happened all of a sudden, Saturday’s [11 August 2012] violence happened right under the nose of the city police. Those who held south Mumbai to ransom are not just miscreants, they are anti-national Muslims. However, it is unfortunate that the police did nothing to control the crisis. The office of the police commissioner is barely 100 steps away from the place where the Muslim youths went on the rampage. They took away weapons from policemen, molested women, assaulted innocent citizens and torched public vehicles. Yet the police did nothing. Their bullets turned into chocolates.”

@Huzefa: “how controversial this guy is and how much he hate muslims islam and pakistan”

Extremely WRONG statement. He hates Pakistan but he doesn’t hate all Muslims in India. He definitely hates those Muslims who support Pakistan.

And we all know and accept that there are few Muslim’s in India who stay in India and work in India but have their heart in Pakistan.

I will give you an example which I have witnessed. This happened in Pune – Camp area. There was a match between India and Pakistan. India lost the match and there was a bunch of guys who were bursting crackers and celebrating Pakistan’s victory. They were also carrying Pakistani flag.
These types of incidents have happened in Mumbai, Ahmednagar, Aurangabad, Hyderabad and many other places.

He wanted to uproot these muslims from India, who are staying in India but hate India.

—-> Many terrorist attacks have happened on India, do you think all these are possible without support from within India? The issue is HINDI Media is always busy bashing Thankerays that whatever they say is always taken and mis-interpreted. When he says THEY its not normal muslims in India but those who are Pakistanis staying in India.

—–> He hates Pakistan, but then what’s wrong in that? There are many people in Pakistan who hate India or else why would they do so many terrorist attacks on India?? Atleast Thakeray’s don’t go and terrorize people in Pakistan.
Also whatever they do they say it loudly and then do it. “Chaati Thok ke “.
They are not “KAYAR’s” like your Pakistani terrorists who hide and attack normal people in India.

    —–>

What is Balasaheb contribution in Maharashtra? Wt I feel is, He brought all marathi speaking people divided in various religion, castes etc. under one roof. He is the one who gave birth to term “Marathi Manus”, where he struggled for their progress and protected them at times.

We need such a Leader at India level who will bring whole India together. We should take inspiration from him.

R.I.P Balasaheb Thackeray Saheb. Jai Hind Jai Maharashtra!

@Rockie bro, apt response to Huzefa .. but please realize hate goes both ways.

Yes, there are Indian muslims who support Pakistan and would rather be in Pakistan. They are hypocrites and quite plainly disgusting people.

The cricket example you gave, I have seen that in my relatives as well. It deserves to be condemned.

But do understand two wrongs dont make a right.

You say Thackeray was only against Muslims who supported Pakistan, his statements posted by Shahid say otherwise.

His contribution to Maharashtra and Marathi people, as posted by you, fails to hide his hatred of non-Marathis, something you conveniently want to avoid

In no other state in India, you’ll hear people saying Jai Bangal or Jai Punjab or Jai Bihar. Why do some Mahathis think Maharashtra is a different nation?

Are they any different from the Muslims who live in India, but do not consider themselves Indians. One thinks they are a different nation based on their religion and hates the rest of India, the other thinks they are a different nation based on their language and hates the rest of India.

@Top_Shot .. I have not been to Maharashtra much, so I dont know much about the local issues there. But doing some right things doesnt absolve of doing other wrong-doings.

So he might have done great things for Marathis like you said or he might not have done any good for them either like Dr Nick said. But what I know is people in Mumbai live in fear because of the Shiv Sena … tell me if that is not TERRORISM. And Shiv Sainiks have created riots and killed people (Muslims, Sikhs, Biharis, North Indians alike) .. tell me if that is not GENOCIDE

Regarding too many migrants to Mumbai, market forces would anyway determine there is a balance of supply and demand, but the Indian constitution gives the right to every Indian to reside anywhere within India .. its amongst the most fundamental rights (Right to Freedom and Right to Equality) given by the constitution. So Bal Thackeray was as ANTI-INDIAN as Pakistani terrorists.

But said that, why i made above comment is because- let me give you one recent example. Couple of years back. there was Western Railway (Mumbai) exam. and advertisement for this exam was published in Bihar/Up newspaper (again nothing wrong in that but what is wrong is this-) but that ad was not published in local marathi newspaper. Result was 95% applicants were North Indians. Thackerey protested against it. (again his ways were brutal, i dont support the way.) and this resulting into re-exam with advertisment published in local news paper.

He has improved practically nothing but destroyed a lot. His only lasting legacy would be the change of the city’s name, and a history of anti-nationalism that bordered on terrorism. Use of goonda rule is disgusting to say the least.

It is very easy for people outside Maharashtra to comment about Balasaheb’s contribution. The main reason is most of the people are BRAIN-Washed by Hindi media. So anything that Thakre says is always taken in bad way and is mis-interpreted.

Let me give you guys 1 analogy. I think I have quoted it earlier on NG, but let me re-iterate.

Most of you must have seen this movie Avatar.
    1) Humans go to this planet Pandora to get the precious material.
    2) Local’s of Pandora “Navi’s” resist them because its their home.
    3) Humans call them savages.

    Similarly,
    1) N Indians come to Maharashtra and Mumbai to get jobs.
    2) Local’s of Maharashtra resist them because its their home.
    3) N Indians call the local’s “Marathi Manoos” as terrorist.

—> Read this analogy and decide for yourself.
You will say India is a free country and anyone can move anywhere, well yes to some extent yes but what if the local’s are becoming jobless because of the infinite population coming from outside.

Educated people try n sustain this competition, maybe move out to different places and find work there. But the poor, less educated guys dont have any place to go. The dhobi’s, rickshawalla, taxiwallas all have suffered.

There is a limit to everything. Then we have politicians like Lalu playing dirty tricks like not releasing Govt Job exam ad’s in Marathi newspaper.

Add to it the UP- Bihar goonda’s coming in loads to Maharashtra and then asking for Hafta’s to poor shopkeepers and vegetable vendors.

In these bad times Thakre’s were the one’s who understood the issues of Marathi Manoos and stood by them. Its obvious Hindi media was against them and always tried to show them as Anti National.

    ———————-

Also think about the medical infrastructure issue in Mumbai. If an epidemic hits Mumbai then the infrastructure is such that it can cater only to 30% of population. Rich folks will anyways save their ass, Outsiders will go back to their natives. Only people who will be left to DIE are the Poor Marathi folks the natives of Maharashtra.

PS: Some people ask why do I say “Jai Maharashtra”, but why do they dont see the “Jai Hind” written before that??

Punjabi’s say – Shera Di Kuaom Punjabi – That’s okay
Biharis say – Hum bhi Thet Bihari hai – That’s okay

but when we say “Jai Maharashtra” then that’s an issue, Why??

We are proud Maratha’s and say Jai Hind Jai Maharashtra … !!
    —–

@Huzefa: Dont worry dude, but just be ware of USA. After cleaning Iraq, Afganistan your country is next in line.
To top it your country gave refugee to Osama. Now see how these Gora’s clean your house nicely. Chun Chun ke … nikallenge terrorist’s ko aur DHO dallenge.

@rockie bhau.. very good analogy you put there… See I dont care about these hufeza and clan…. But I do care about our other Indian brothers. I want them to understand that saying Jai Maharashtra doesn’t make marathi manoos anti India. Thats why I am making so many comments trying to explain the real situation. Hope our brothers understand us.

Another excellent point you made there. I want to elaborate that a little. See people from different part of India coming for looking their ‘roji-roti’ to Mumbai/Maharashtra would not be a problem. But what is happening over the years, leader/politicians of states like Bihar/UP are taking advantage of this in wrong way. They are doing nothing for their states, they are very inactive in providing good education , creating jobs for locals. hence large of their population is moving outside looking for these things.
Root-Cause of the over-populating Mumbai is this. But I am deeply sadden no one is even noticing it let alone addressing.

I will give you my personal expi. In my college in kolhapur, you would not believe how many UP/Bihar students are there. I was surprised my self. So I asked them like Why would you come all the way to kolhapur for education? Its not like Metro city like Mumbai/Pune. Kolhapur is just a medium sized city with mediocre colleges compared to Pune/Mumbai. then why would you leave your home and come so long way?
Their answer was Education quality in their states in not good. They have very good colleges in their state no doubt. but those are very few. And hence many student could not get into those colleges. So for better education they move out of state.
See this is just one example. People in UP/Bihar are very bright, workaholic, hard worker. If only their politicians provide them enough opportunities they will take UP/Bihar to new heights. .

@Topshot – Yes u r right. This guy Huzaifa is talking only rott and crap. Why bring in religions here and making provocative statements ? Mods should have banned him immediately and closed the thread if people are making such type of comments.

Hufaiza should worry about muslims in Pakistan rather than worrying about Indian muslims who are in far far better state than Pakistani muslims. Here we do not see and bomb blast in mosques leave aside during the month of Ramazan.

Just for the information of this guy Huzaifa, the family doctor of Balasaheb is muslim (Dr. Jaleel Parker). The team of Drs’. working on him, Dr. Ansari was also muslim. His cook is also muslim, many of his friends are also muslim. He is against only those muslims who live here, enjoy here but betray the nation by singing songs of Pakistan at every opportunity. Your leader Imran khan visit India every now and then to enjoy the Indian hospitality. Your ex president Musharraf visit India every now and then and like wise so many others but then stab us on our back. This is your bloody honesty.

Dr. Nick – Every thing can be changed and good thing will happen. Just see how beautifully people live here (I mean no riots in Mumbai) for so many years.

Could you see yesterday such a big crowd and how beautifully the things have been managed ? Not even a single incident. Lovely. Keep it up Mumbaikars.

I am Indian, Maharashtrian and Muslim and I am proud of it.

ROCKIE BRO : :claps: such ppl desreve only this kind of answers

    ———————————————————————————–

Top shot and Rockie made some valid points .. the states like UP and Bihar get very good amount from centres and what they do is build their own status etc .. enn ko itna paisa milta hai but saara ka saara gapat kar jate nothing goes towards the infrastructure and then the youth from these states move to mumbai and now even delhi for work.. they are just putting pressure on infrastructure of these states ……

Bihar i have heard is showing some improvement hope that happens

and yeah there are quotas for even educational institutes for localites in states and saala delhi ke student have to go outside as there is no quota for delhites …
there shd be uniformity either there shd be no quoata in any state or there be quoata in every state for localites

bihar and up se log aate hai and they develop jhuggis jagah then they shit in open .. and yeah even if governement gives them flat they rent it and come back and develop jhuggi somehwere else ..

let alone from state perspective .. its not good from NATIONAL PERSPECTIVE …
the states which can be developed into world class states /cities fail to develop into world class because of so much population coming from outside and putting pressure on the infrstaructurre and on the other hand the state ministers keep spending the grants they get from centre for their personal use rather than in development of infrastructure and hence creating imbalance

@Rockie, respect u and ur feelings.

But i have something to say, hopefully u wont take it negatively and rather constructively.

“Most of you must have seen this movie Avatar.

    3) N Indians call the local’s “Marathi Manoos” as terrorist.”

Just wanted to bring to your notice:

Article 15 which is a fundamental right is as follows :

“Prohibition of discrimination on grounds of religion, race, caste, sex or place of birth
    (1) The State shall not discriminate against any citizen on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them
    (2) No citizen shall, on grounds only of religion, race, caste, sex, place of birth or any of them, be subject to any disability, liability, restriction or condition with regard to
    (a) access to shops, public restaurants, hotels and palaces of public entertainment; or
    (b) the use of wells, tanks, bathing ghats, roads and places of public resort maintained wholly or partly out of State funds or dedicated to the use of the general public
    (3) Nothing in this article shall prevent the State from making any special provision for women and children
    (4) Nothing in this article or in clause ( 2 ) of Article 29 shall prevent the State from making any special provision for the advancement of any socially and educationally backward classes of citizens or for the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes”

I understand your practical problems, but fact remains is that We the People of India (not any one state) gave ourselves this Constitution of India.

And it will certainly interest you, if u can read the debates on Constituent Assembly, on how this Constitution and it laws were formed, that will give u backdrop.

Part III of the Indian Constitution read with Directive Principles of State Policy, read with entire constitution which is self contained code gives the various rights.

I am just drawing your attention, as my friend, earlier as a common man, of this great country, i also never understood many things, had my doubts, and thus i studied the Indian Constitution and the Birth of this nation, and came to know of various rights, which are accorded to us.

I am not placing my interpretation, or understanding, but would just request u to read above article, various judgements and commentaries of Supreme Court, and Constitution of India entirely, if it can provide some insight.

And making of the Indian Constitution, the constitutional debates are available, which would show how an article was drafted and enacted as law, and everyone was representated by representatives, and Princely States all were present, and India was formed.

    Hope it helps, Cheers!

@Huzefa I did not like you comment related to manmohan/ISI. You should only speak with arguments. Do not go at personal levels.

As for as my views are concerned. Sitting in pakistan, I do not get good impression when someone in india says that Pakistani cricket team should not visit india or someone in india is criticized very hardly for saying that pak players should be included in IPL.

I respect the Constitution of India and will def read through it, but still have a slight thing. This constitution was written in 1950 its like more than 60 years ago.

Times have changed and as Manish bro and TopShot bro has pointed the issue is not only in Mumbai and Maharashtra but also other big cities are facing it.

    —-
I do apologize if I have hurt feelings of anyone. This includes Huzefa and other Pakistani frnds that I have made on NG.

I know one thing everyone likes to have a good life and people migrate in search of good life. Hopefully we will have uniform development of all states in India and let time be the best solution for this problem.

About Balasaheb, some will hate him some will like him. I personally will keep drawing inspirations from his life.

    May his soul RIP.

    @rockie

I might say that one of the basic features of Indian Constitution is it’s not entirely federal, and it’s not even unitary… it’s Quasi- Federal. Hence that is who we are, and that’s the stone on which this country was founded which is reflected in Indian Constitution. Anyways following is a bit long, and hopefully i have got it right as it’s 2 am here when i shall post it!!

Understand what you are saying, but dost, i hope u have heard of His Holiness Keshavnanda Bharati’s case. Major amendments were made in Constitution which were very shocking and troubling according to many critics, and the matter was heard by Hon’ble Apex Court, and the moot question was whether Constitution can be amended or not. The matter was argued for Five Months, and the greatest Indian Lawyer Nani Palkhiwala appeared for the Petitioner. This case would be one of the most important moment of Free India.

Simply put taken from wiki (link is below)

“The case originated in February 1970 when Swami HH Kesavananda Bharati Sripadagalvaru, Senior Pontiff and head of “Edneer Mutt” – a Hindu Matha situated in Edneer, a village in Kasaragod District of Kerala, challenged the Kerala government’s attempts, under two state land reform acts, to impose restrictions on the management of its property. Although the state invoked its authority under Article 31, a noted Indian jurist, Nanabhoy Palkhivala, convinced the Swami into fighting his petition under Article 29, concerning the right to manage religiously owned property without government interference. Even though the hearings consumed five months, the outcome would profoundly affect India’s democratic processes.[5]”

Earlier to this case 11 Judges had decided that yes Constitution can be amended but the Part III which is a constitutional guarantee cant be amended.

SO this matter was referred to 13 Judges (that is the highest no. of judges ever on the bench to listen a matter, historic moment)

The Judgement is probably longest in Indian History, but simply stated by 7:6 majority opinion was delivered. Actually it was 6.6-6.4, as the judgements were tied at 6-6, when the last judgement which had many paras in favour of allowing the amendments in final paragraphs declared them unconstitutional.

It stated that Earlier judgement of 11 judges is overruled and doctrine of “basic structure” was authored. As per Hon’ble Apex Court, yes the parliament has the amending power but it cant amend the Basic Structure of the Constitution.

What is Basic Structure, cant be placed in straight jacket formula, but certain illustrative cases were stated in the judgement. In each facts of the case it is required to be determined what is basic structure.

Thus, to put it simply, Fundamental Rights and other important rights etc are BASIC STRUCTURE, they cannot be amended, this is the law of this country.

There are many reasons and logics for origin of this theory and understanding, but simply I can say is one eg.

Suppose if Parliament is given 100 % power to amend the Constitution, tomorrow it can convert India from Parliamentary Prime Minister System, to a presidential one. Which shall violate the Basic Structure.

The Constitution is more than a document, or legal instrument, its a promise, a guarantee which was given to each and every citizen of this country, and thus it cannot be touched with. Also to have a constitutional amendment ( even illegal one) the majority and procedure is very tough.

As you see, Country was being formed. This Constitution makes us who we are.

Also, the Emergency, was a situation, which is often a reason ( this judgement was prior to Emergency ) whereby this judgement is justified by critics, who says that if unlimited power would have been given and interpreted, it would lead to chaos and anarchy.

You can read, as a common man on this case
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kesavananda_Bharati_v._State_of_Kerala

    I shall recommend following books

Nani Palkhiwala : The Court Room Genius (he was the lawyer who fought for and protection of people’s right, and won the case of Keshavnanda Bharati )

The Kesavananda Bharati Case The Untold Story of Struggle For Supremacy by Supreme Court and Parliament
    Author(s) : T R Andhyarujina

and there are many, more books and stuff to read on this topic.

The very fact that today, we have this fundamental rights and that those rights are protected, is very important, or else tomorrow by giving the unending amending power to parliament and one party having ppwer or coalition having power u can imagine the scenario.

The backdrop, the tension, etc can be found in those books, this is ofcourse not like an action movie, but this is one of the greatest episodes of thsi country, whereby our constitution it’s dreams and goals were protected by the Highest Judiciary.

And many people dont know about it….. Just imagine, if this rights werent protected, there would be

    right to health
    right to education
    right to business
    right to profession
    right to life
right to profess religion of one’s own choice… and many more thousands of rights were protected, which would eventually flow from Part III of Constitution.
