Movie Review: Jab Tak Hai Jaan (#JTHJ)

I watched FDFS of JTHJ today and went with enormous expectation. This was my 5th FDFS movie and my second FDFS movie of Yash Chopra.

I am a big fan of Yash Chopra’s films. His earlier movies (Deewar, Daag, Waqt) are my absolute favourite. He faltered a bit in early and mid ’80s…but was back with a bang with Chandni, one of my favorite movies of 80s. Then he made Lamhe, which I did not like at all. Even till date Lamhe has failed to grow on me and I fail to understand the hullaballoo about it. Yash Chopra won me very soon with Darr. I loved his DTPH when it released, though now I think it was just about good and quite overrated. Yash Chopra’s last movie, Veer Jaara, was good but lacked sincerity and pakaoed me a bit when I saw it in the theatre. However I am a big fan of VJ’s music.

JTHJ cannot be compared with Previous Yash ji’s film. However he has kept his core philosophy intact – an emotional story backed with great locations. However this time his “well-filmed” craft is standing on a silly logic that was not the case with Chandni or Darr. More about this later.

JTHJ starts of a breezy note and all the three lead stars – Katrina, Anushka and SRK look fresh and acts very well in extremely scenic locales. The movie starts with Kashmir and then the main story of SRK-Katrina is unfolded from SRK’s diary. Yash Chopra keeps the pace fast and at the same time build the story really well. The highlight of the first half is the dance track of Katrina, followed by Ishq Shava song. The 2nd half of the movie drags a bit (not much) and has an average climax.

The movie ends with a song featuring bash Chopra filming this movie. The visuals touches my cord and i get more emotional than any scene in the movie. Pardon me for being a big fan of Yash Chopra and will miss him always.

Katrina has looked ethereal in this film and has given her finest performance at par with Namaste London. This time she is more mature and her hard work seems to have paid off again.

SRK is awesome. His acting is impeccable and his look changes from beareded to clean shaven throughout the movie as and when story moves ahead with time. He looks mature and dashing with stubble and younger & charming in clean shaven look. He delivers his best performance after CDI. However he was repetitive and predictable in few scenes.

Anushka adds the spark and the youth factor in her bubbly yet sensitive act. She provides an apt supporting role and has looked very beautiful. She is sure to get few supporting actress trophies next year.

Late Yash Chopra gives yet another movie that is good. However he has not given us a gem because the story hangs on a silly logic. This logic can be found to be good enough for few, however for many it will be tough. Now in many movies lot of illogical stuffs are more acceptable but not in a movie that wants to be sensitive, serious and a class act. I found the logic that separates Katrina and SRK pre interval a little tough nut to crack.

AR Rehmaan shines in background music. He also excels with Challa and Ishq Shava. However other songs of the movie is forgettable and this will always be held against AR Rehman.

Gulzar’s lyrics are not easy to understand. He disappointed me big time.

Kashmir’s locales have been beautifully captured esp the Leh and Laddakh area. It was great to see the beautiful part of our country in a Yash Chopra movie.

Yes JTHJ is a class act but is not a Gem that will be remembered. Have a heavenly time Yashji and will miss you always.

Rating 3.5/5 – Good to V Good

Disclaimer – I wrote this review after an altercation and name calling on Shoutbox with FS, Rex, RJ and Lambu Reloaded. They attacked and made fun of me as soon as I started praising JTHJ on SB. I lost my cool.

Gorillas are the largest of the living primates. They are ground-dwelling herbivores that inhabit the forests of Africa. Gorillas are divided into two species and (still under debate as of 2008) either four or five subspecies. The DNA of gorillas is 98%–99% identical to that of a human, and they are the next closest living relatives to humans after the two chimpanzee species.......To cut a long story short, I am the kaala bander residing inside YOU!

Jealous hater of SRK – SRK’s entry in London is not grand…he is shown working as a church’s janitor when he first gets a glimpse of Katrina. His entry in the movie happens in Kashmir and it was good. Actually the leh and Ladakh shots were wow!

You were attacked and name called just for supporting a film? Very typical nowadays here. And I’m not surprised by one of the member who was calling you names too.
