Bhootnath Sequel to be directed by National Award-winning film ‘Chillar Party’ director Nitesh Tiwari

November 8, 2012 | 1

Mumbai: After co-directing National Award-winning film ‘Chillar Party’, Nitesh Tiwari will direct ‘Bhoothnath’ sequel and says he cannot think about the project without Amitabh Bachchan and is waiting for the megastar’s dates to start the film.

The original, directed by Vivek Sharma, starred Amitabh in the title role of a ghost who befriends a child called Banku (Aman Siddiqui). Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla were also in the cast as naughty Banku’s parents.

It was released in 2008 and four years later Tiwari is set to direct the sequel to the movie.

Film Review – Skyfall

November 8, 2012 | 4

Here’s my latest update from my blog. Again, my humble request that you comment on it (in the blog).

I’ll give the first few paragraphs.

That Sam Mendes has proved himself as a quality filmmaker is in absolutely no doubt. With titles like Road to Perdition and the Academy Award-winning American Beauty, he has carved himself a solid brand recognition without being splashily famous like Christopher Nolan or James Cameron. So when he was announced as the director of the (then untitled) Bond project, everyone was up in the air. An Academy Award winner would definitely turn around the franchise after the faltering step that was Quantum of Solace. Right?

AJAY DEVGAN WINS, YET LOSES THE CCI BATTLE

November 8, 2012 | 23

AJAY DEVGAN WINS, YET LOSES, THE CCI BATTLE

Ajay Devgan has succeeded in getting an enquiry instituted against Yash Raj Films in the Jab Tak Hai Jaan versus Son Of Sardaar case but his attempt to get relief for his own film failed.

Here’s what Ajay’s lawyers have to say:

“The Competition Appellate Tribunal has seen merit in our case and has issued notice for enquiring into the anti competitive activities of YRF about the tie-in arrangement to block our movie Son Of Sardaar on the day of Diwali. While looking at YRF’s own damning statement that only 821 theatres which have already executed agreement with YRF for showing Jab Tak Hai Jaan on the Diwali day, had a so-called tie-in arrangement in comparison to 1,407 single-screens for Ek Tha Tiger, the Competition Appellate Tribunal did not provide an interim relief. This leaves the balance screens which have not executed agreements with YRF to show Jab Tak Hai Jaan till date, to be free to exhibit Son Of Sardaar without any tie-in arrangement of YRF. This would include 586 single-screens which had earlier shown Ek Tha Tiger. Accordingly, we would now be approaching all theatres which have not executed any agreement for showing Jab Tak Hai Jaan for exhibiting our movie. However, if the above facts are found to be false, which would be proven through evidence after the release of the movie, we would not only continue to fight against YRF’s anti-competitive activities on our own behalf but also on behalf of the entire industry.”

Ajay Devgan spoke to me ten minutes back and reiterated that he would continue his fight after the release of his film. “I am not foolish to spend the money I am spending on this case, without a base. I may end up spending Rs. 50-60 lakh. I have a battery of top lawyers arguing my case. Are they stupid to take up my case if they are not convinced? I have been studying the MRTP law since the last two-three months and I know what I am doing.” The actor-producer, who did not seem tense at all, ended, “Komal, I have been reading your tweets and blogs, and I absolutely know, you are being very fair, as always. I would never say, you have sided one party over the other.”

Windows 8 gives wings to Aamir’s Talaash

November 8, 2012 | 10

Here is good news for fans of Aamir Khan and Windows 8 operating system (OS).

Yes, in a latest development to target the new category of audience in India, technology major Microsoft is promoting its latest Windows 8 OS in collaboration with Aamir khan’s upcoming movie Talaash.

If stills from Aamir’s Talaash alongside photos of Windows 8 are all over a bus stop in Bangalore, in other cities, one can see huge hoardings of Aamir in a police inspector’s out-fit endorsing Windows 8. Twitter is abuzz with these photos from across India.

Although there is no official announcement from Microsoft on the tie-up on the movie Talaash for its new Windows 8 OS, the fans of both the community are excited and that is evident on Twitter.

“Join Inspector Shekhawat in his Talaash with Windows 8. Hats off @aamir_khan for marketing genius,” tweeted Abhishek Simlot (?@abhishek_simlot ), fan of Aamir Khan.

“Everyone knows, talks of being fair are rubbish” – Ajay Devgn

November 8, 2012 | 3

By Joginder Tuteja, Nov 8, 2012

ajayonyrf1 Everyone knows, talks of being fair are rubbish Ajay DevgnTo state that Ajay Devgn is hurt due to ongoing imbroglio would be stating the obvious. However, one conversation with him and you know that the man is venting it out like never before. Always a balanced guy who stays to the point in each and every conversation of his, he is maintaining an emotional equilibrium even in current scenario though one can pretty much see that he isn’t willing to take it lying down. Stating things as they are and only demanding a fair consideration of the current situation, Ajay makes himself heard and that too pretty strong.

How does the release stand in the current scenario?
See, matter is in the court but deep inside, everyone knows what is right and what is wrong. In a legal battle, you are not supposed to comment anything. But, all I can say is that at least, industry and trade people know what has transpired so there is no point getting into that debate. Whatever I say is something that you would write from my point of view and you would add from your point of view.

How has the industry reaction been so far?
(Smiles) Well, mera bhala ho yaa naa ho par kam se kam industry people are calling up to say that hamara bhala toh ho jaayega. They (Yash Raj Films) are talking about being fair and all, par…jo baatein ho rahi hain uske hisaab se toh sabko pata hai, that it is all rubbish. If you talk about fair, then I will give you a simple example. Main to yahi bol raha hoon that I don’t want any compensation or their release to be stopped. I am not asking for any damages. I am being fair.

So what next?
I am asking the law to be fair. If they (YRF) give a statement that exhibitors can release at their will, then that’s what I am also saying. Main keh raha hoon ki aaj saare exhibitors ko bolo ki jo aapne Ek Tha Tiger ke saath contract sign kiye hain usko bhool jaayo. Unki marzi hai ki kaunsi picture release karni hai aur woh haath ke haath decide kar lein ki jisko jiske saath jaana hai woh jaaye. Ab fair hai toh fair hai! Main kisi ko phone nahi karoonga ki meri picture lagaao aur woh kisi ko phone naa karein ki meri picture lagao. Bass…baat khatam! Jis exhibitor ko lagaani hai woh wahi picture lagaae!

Max JTHJ Can collect – Bollywood’s Various Niches And Their Market Size

November 8, 2012 | 26

once upon a time its was a simple 3 tier system. there was the mainstream bollywood film, mainly socials and romances that cornered 70-80% of the business (raj kapoor’s movies to yash chopra ones) and there was the slightly more serious, more sophisticated cinema (of say bimal roy to shyam benegal) that had a smaller share of the pie. but the biggest success was reserved for the ‘universally acclaimed films’ (mughal e aazam, mother india, kismat) catering to the sensibilities of both, or may be all’ kinds of audiences. there was the rare stunt genre film in between but they started emerging as a ‘different niche market’ not earlier than the 60s. the second thrust came wth the arrival of the multiplexes in the late 90s and since then the market has been getting so fragmented that we haven’t had a ‘universal hit’ for 18 years now.

so here are the top 10 niche markets of bollywod and their approximate size.

10. the indian english film/crossover film – the fact that it actually never managed to cross over (in the sense that no foreigners bothered to watch them, and even the NRI and south asians stuck to watching sharukh khan’s NRI dramas) ensured that this market has remained stuck at under a crore. hardly any films are being made n the category (the last i can recall is mixed doubles by rajat kapoor starring konkona, ranbeer and koel purie.) some say it started with ‘English august’ in 1997, others insist it was way back with merchant ivory movies like ‘siddhartha’ and ‘heat and dust’ but the fact remain that the ‘indian english film’ is a market that has failed to grow beyond 1 crore despite the advent of multiplexes.

9. the Z grade sex flick – you may not know it exists but the ‘miniscule’ budgetted Z grade sex-thriller or even sex-social ( in the end they tell u, in a 3 idiots style pedagogy session, that its wrong to have sex, qualifying it as ‘educational’) are a market by themselves. in a country where television has no sex, internet has 10% penetration and DVD a little higher, these films are a steady stream of revenue for anonymous producers and directors and can make upt 3 crores, if really ‘appreciated’ by its target audience. the last classic in the genre – well – sheela ki jawaani shot in 7 days to coincide with the release of tees maar khan. and for all you know, it might have been a bigger ROI success than the farah khan caper.

Diwali Releases Get Equal Screen Time In North Multiplexes

November 8, 2012 | 1

A couple of the Delhi and North multiplex chains have set there schedules for the Diwali releases Jab Tak Hai Jaan and Son Of Sardaar and it is 50% split for both films.

The Satyam chain of multiplexes which have good presence in Delhi city with 3 properties have given 10 shows each for the film. Its a similar picture in Ghaziabad where a few multiplexes have set there programming giving equal screen time.

The advance at these theatres for Tuesday was also similar for both films. The choice for the audience has meant that the advance for the films is not like Bodyguard, Ek Tha Tiger and Ra.One at least as far as North India is concerned.

If we combine the films then you can compare the advance with those films but as single films the advance at multiplexes is less than the big openers of the last year or so. The initial advance of last year’s Diwali release of Ra.One was stronger than either Jab Tak Hai Jaan or Son Of Sardaar. The first day was also always going to be on the lower side due to Diwali Puja and the clash has also ensured that records will also not be broken on the day after Diwali which is traditionally the best day for business in the whole year.

Jab Tak Hai Jaan Advance Booking Report

Jab Tak Hai Jaan Advance Booking Report

After all the hype, controversies, excitement, fan-wars.. it all comes down to those 3 hours at the cinema hall, which will decide the fate of the film. In less than 8 days from now, the verdict will be out for Yash Chopra’s last film Jab Tak Hai Jaan featuring Shahrukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka Sharma.

The advance booking (which is different from pre-booking) has opened at select centres and the response has been ‘very good’. One multiplex in Pune, E Square, opened counters, and in less than a day close to 75% of the tickets are sold out for the early morning show (8:30AM).

In Bangalore, two multiplexes have put tickets on sale. The response has been good at Urvashi Digital 4K Cinema, with most of the tickets already sold out for the morning show (10:45). The other theatre to list the film ‘Innovative Multiplex: Marathahalli’, has sold less than 10% of the available tickets.

The advance booking for Son Of Sardaar has also opened at a few screens today. A report on that will be published tomorrow or Friday.

Can Jab Tak Hai Jaan Break The Toughest Record

November 8, 2012 | 5

There are records that are broken every few months and then there are records which are tough to beat and take years to be taken out.

One such record is UK lifetime box office, a record was set in 2001 by Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and that was broken 9 years later by My Name Is Khan. Very few films even stand a chance to break the UK record but Jab Tak Hai Jaan is one such film. It is the right genre, has a UK setting and has Shahrukh Khan as main lead who is just competing with himself in UK.

The UK market has struggled in the last few years and basically if Jab Tak Hai Jaan does not put up a big number it means others don’t stand much of a chance and its really a dead market.

There is also the £3 million mark to breached in UK and if market conditions had allowed it should have been crossed by now because Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham in 2001 grossed £2.5 million and eleven years later we are still looking for the £3 million film. The £3 million total is a long shot due to market conditions (piracy and recession) but if any film has a chance it is Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
