there are 11000 single screens in india, apart from 3000 odd multiplex screens. even if 6000 of those are in decent conditions (which is very possible as all 3000 single screens are ‘spick n span’ and all it needs is 3000 decent single screens for two films to releae comfortably without eating into each others screen space and affect business (unfairly). unless one party decides to play dirty. here is how to play mischief.
in mumbai Dadar is a place where ppl will travel to watch a film if its not releasing in, say Nagpada. so all a michief maker has to do is book all screens in dadar while leaving the nagpada screens alone. now the audiences of jab tak hai jaan from nagpada will still travel to dadar to watch it but the car driving, posh apartments residents of dadar wud not drive into the narrow bylanes of nagpada to watch son of sardar. the same example can be applied to bandra/dharavi, andheri/jogeshwari in mumbai or to saket/vasnat kunj vs trilok puri/badarpur border in delhi or across all cities in the country. and thats what yashraj have done. the point is, even if they had released their film evenly, they wud have got the same number of audiences, may be more ( counting those from nagpada who may decide not to commute to dadar for distnace or marginally higher ticket prices in dadar) but YRF has decided to risk it’s own business marginally to sabotage son of sardar deleberately, viciously, and maliciously.
but why are they so despaerate?
the only obvious answer is they are not confident of their product. 1st they tried to browbeat ajay devgan by playing the emotional card indirectly pressurising him through paid media articles to postpone his film as a mark of respect as jab tak hai jaan was yash chopra’s last directorial venture, and later as yash chopra died the pressure was escalated further. but before planning a sabotage of ajay’s film did yashraj forget that son of sardar is also the home production of kajol, ajay’s wife, an industry daughter, the heroine of yashraj’s biggest hit in history DDLJ, from the illustriuous mukherji family of filmistan, daughter of tanuja and the niece of great nutan. even ajay devgan is the son of veteran action director veeru devgan and deserves some emotion, as low as he may be in the ‘emotional food chain’ of bollywood.
But YRF-SRK planned a cold blooded sabotage like any corporate honcho wud, sans any (fake) bollywood emotions becoz they are
1. not confident of the product.
2. srk’s dwindling star power over the last 5 years
3. the genre not being current audience freindly
4. the music of jab tak hai jaan not picking up even as the counry sings ‘rani tu main raja’
i am an ajay devgan fan. i think he is an excellent actor and has conducted himself with a lot of dignity in his 20 years in bollywood as compared to chhichhora, frivolous, megalomaniac, egoistical sharukh khan. so no prizes for guessing which side i want to win. but even if the YRF-SRK combo succeed in their evil designs, it will be just a half victory for them as they have had to use all kind of unfair means and above all the star power of srk’s arch nemesis salman khan to win this battle. after all ‘jab tak hai jaan’ was able to play out this dirty trick on the strength of ek tha tiger.
