Aamir Khan – ‘I feel anything that engages the mind, heart and conscience or attention is entertainment’

As a clean-shaven Aamir Khan walks into banquet hall for the music launch of ‘Talaash – The Answer Lies Within!’ after shooting in Chicago for two and a half months, actress Rani Mukerji can’t help commenting that Aamir Khan looks as handsome as he did when they worked together in ‘Ghulam’. And the more things change, the more Aamir Khan remains unchanged and constant.

Excerpts from an interview…

Aamir Khan After ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Dhobi Ghaat’ and ‘Satyameya Jayate’ how come a film like ‘Talaash…’?

Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar are the writers of this film. I loved the story at the time of the narration. This is a different genre of a suspense drama where I play an inspector. It is not a thriller! The trigger point for this script is an urban legend. Zoya was returning from a party and she got this story idea – then they developed it. Being a cop is my professional preoccupation but there is a personal aspect too. The character Shekhawat hasn’t cum to terms with his past. Emotional angle and drama have their own attraction and lure! I don’t want to reveal much but as far as the suspense is concerned, the end will surprise you. I feel that viewers will flock to see the good story, the drama and discover new things about the plot each time they see it. There will be a lot of repeat viewers. I feel anything that engages the mind, heart and conscience or attention is entertainment.

What is Aamir’s ‘Talaash…’ all about?

Wish I knew what I am searching for! Perhaps I’m looking for happiness or prosperity for all around us. I am certainly hungry for good work and good opportunities! I want to work with good talented people. As actors, our job is to portray different characters. Good true-to-life characters! And as a performer, my eternal quest is to give my creativity its full expression and my audiences sheer joy and value for their money.

Are you playing a cop simply because Salman Khan, Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar have played cops recently and delivered huge hits?

All superstars played a cop at some point of time in their careers! I am not competing with Ajay or Salman or Akshay in playing a cop. My character is not as colourful as ‘Chulbul Pandey’ was! In ‘Talaash’, Shekhawat grapples with his past. ‘Talaash’ is not an entertainer in that sense but the overall story is gripping and entertaining in its own way. This genre of a suspense drama has been attempted after a long time and I’m sure audiences will love it. We ended the shoot in November but took a lot of time in editing. We wanted to make it the way we had envisioned it! How is it working with a female director after such a long time?

‘Talaash’ is not the first time I have worked with a female director because I have worked with Kiran Rao and Deepa Mehta earlier. It’s irrelevant whether the director is male or female. My experience with Reema Kagti has been absolutely fantastic because she is very clear about what she wants! As an actor, I was guided by her observations. She was a friend, philosopher and guide who was open and demanding, which I like! I could completely trust her instinct. This means a lot to me. I was respectful of her vision of the film. I understood what she wanted to do and helped her achieve her goals.

Who is your favourite actress – Rani or Kareena?

I don’t think anyone but Rani or Kareena could have portrayed these characters as well as they finally did. Someone told me that Reema had approached Shah Rukh Khan for the film initially but things didn’t work out! But the same Reema Kagti says that she can’t imagine any one else but Aamir Khan doing this role. So ‘favourite’ is relative but in the final analysis after the film is shot-released, the star becomes synonymous with the character and vice versa!

What kind of research did you do for the characterisation in this film?

Research depends on the script and the demand therein. In teh case of ‘Sarfarosh’, research was necessary but in this film, the inputs are different. No role is easy. All are difficult. We try hard to understand dynamics of every character. The writing of Reema and Zoya may appear effortless but a lot of effort went into it. There are many characters in this film – every person is different and their story is different too. When I read a story I respond if it touches my heart. I follow the character. I don’t have character already etched in my mind. I don’t work this way. If I decide to portray a character in advance in a particular way, then the film starts on wrong footing. I love organic way where the story is already in place and we all join in as characters contributing to the story and bringing it alive.

Do you feel the pressure of your past successes weighing heavily on ‘Talaash’?

What makes ‘Talaash’ different from them? The pressure of past successes is always there. My effort is to ensure that it doesn’t affect my work. It’s good that people have high expectations and this propels us to excel ourselves. Talaash talks about a world where faces are not what they should be! For eg., Ram Sampath’s compositions are very different and original. The tune of ‘Mushkanein Jhoothi’ is like a collage. I can’t think of any other song that has this kind of composition. One of the strengths of the film is the casting. The type of characters and the respective choice of actors such as Nawazuddin and Raj. Every actor was picked very carefully.

You were supposed to organise the music launch in Kamathipura area of Mumbai where the sex workers reside. Comment?

This was an idea suggested but we don’t want to use anyone’s misfortune to promote our film. Our film is about the underbelly of the city and Kareena plays a street walker. But we don’t want to use real life situations to portray the entertainment aspects of the film. So we recreated Hotel Lido at the music launch venue to give a feel of what’s in the film. And it has worked really well.

Now this is disappointing…why aamir is try to tweak and refine meaning of entertainment? Just don’t be so preachy aamir that ur well wishers start ignoring you. Or has he lost confidence in his project?

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 4 Thumb down 4

Anyways, I Think Talaash is on the Proper Track and Post-Diwali Releases, it will Gain Huge Buzz and Positivity wrt K786.

Aamir is a Smart Person and I don’t Think Talaash will have a Filmy OR ‘ I have Seen This Before’ kinda Suspense/Climax attacthed to it.

It will be 1 of the Best Suspense Thrillrs with Strong Performances, and will take Aamir’s Brand to More High Level.

My MOST AWAITED MOVIE OF THE YEAR!

‘Talaash- the story lies within aamir’s moustache’
looks like aamir is not confident abt it and have started making excuses and tweaking definitions to suit him. Heck he was more confident about Mela than talaash.
Will talaash sink without any trace??
Will aamir break akki’s record of 20cr?? No this one looks difficult as of now..

Kagti had rightly approached Srk for this film as she knows he has a very strong fan base throughout the world and he can take it to safe zone. Now Amir’s stardom will be under test here.lets see whether he can take it to a safe zone or not.

Our srk rightly rejected the film cuz he know that if he did talaash only his fans will watch the movie which is not enuf for it to be a big hit… But with the movie in aamir hands even non aamir fans will be interested in the movie…

Now if Aamir is saying that the suspense will shock you, I’m going to buy it. He does not mince or manipulate words to create effect. I saw that bigtine during promotions of DG.

Ok now I feel Talaash might put Kagti in another league. If it’s that goood. I’m expecting mind numbing world class cinema here.

This will again take Indian Cinema to another level Like Dhobi Ghat..Amir’s mission now is only this as he has delivered seven clean hits in last 25 years of his career, which is a remarkable achievement. Now he wants Indian Cinema to reach to other level and this is aim of his life.

    What can be the suspense?
Aamir himself is the killer or He is not a cop or His character doesn’t exist or Aamir is a ghost or demon or He is hallucinating?

    Alfa.one,

I dont believe NAwazuddin is a much better actor than Aamir… Most people have a tendency to favor any art house actor -just because he/she is an art house actor -thinking that they must be better actors. /which performance of Nawazuddin do you think surpasses AAmir’s works? Kahani or GOW2? If you really think so then you need to look again keeping your hate for aamir aside (which you have already made public) Nawazuddin is a good actor but its still a long way to go for him until comments like the above hold any truth.

For me nawazuddin siddiqi is better actor because of his act in kahani though he didnt impress me much i GOW 2. Still of latw i find aamir too overated as an actor coz of his repeated acts. He was too artificial in 3 I as well. Off reel he is the MOST CUNNING, MANUPULTIVE and DISGUSTING person.

Aamir khan has his son die in an accident for which he considers himself responsible. as a result he develops a psychological condition (schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder). He kills all these people at the same spot his son died due to his condition, but then forgets or doesn’t wanna remember what he did. He is also a police officer in charge of investigating all these crimes/accidents. As a result he goes on a search for answers to know why so many people die in apparent car accidents at the same place. Cause he has a psychological condition, he also imagines stuff, thus Kareena being just a figment of his imagination. Eventually he finds out that he is the killer and his Talaash and the movie ends and he dies of guilt.

I like Ranbeer kapoor (he is next superstar for sure) and Ajay Devagann but not fan of any star.

Still I repeat, I HATE AAMIR KHAN.

Now back to the topic, Suprab, seriously do u believe Aamir is not overrated as an actor ?? Can u analyse his acts in recent movies like Ghajini, 3I etc etc. Do u believe 3 I was an entertaining movie only coz of Aamir or more due to 1. Rajkumar Hirani and 2. Omi Vaidya ? As per u who was better between the two when both (Aamir and Chatur) appeared in the same frame ?

I have criticized Aamir’s ghajini act more than anyone else on this forum. I found it monkeyesque and unnecessary. Regarding 3 idiots , I found the movie itself overrated and Aamir’s performance Over the top many a times. Having said that I am no fool to compare aamir and Chatur in same frame. Chatur was supposed to be the buffoon of the film and hence he would be more funny. Its like asking, who is better Srk or Johnny lever whenever they come together in a frame in Baazigar or even Baadshah? Or like asking who is better in a single frame, Rajpal Yadav or ABC actor…when you know Rajpal will be the guy, since his portrayal is supposed to be a funny guy.

Your comparison is just made to look Aamir small-smaller than Omi Vaidya. I can provide multiple comparisons like these to make every bollywood star ever look smaller than the side kick/side actor.

Btw who was better in Gow2 in single frame–Nawazuddin or the guy who played Definite ?
