Ranveer Singh gets a dose of Sanjay Leela Bhansali
The actor tells us how Bhansali pushed him to shake off his Bandra airs and get under the skin of a Gujarati Romeo

Bagging the lead role in Sanjay Leela Bhansaliās upcoming romance Ram Leela was easier than being chosen for Band Baaja Baraat. āYRF saw my audition and they took a few weeks to confirm me. This happened within a couple of days,ā laughs Ranveer Singh.
Whereas, it was only later that the actor realised what it takes to be a Bhansali hero. And learning to speak Hindi with a Gujarati twang was just a part of it.
āHe is not a director who is easily pleased. He wants you to push more and moreā¦ till he gets what he wants. Woh aasani se nahi mannte. Shooting has started and I am starting today,ā Ranveer tells us and launches an extensive account of all that he has done to get into the character of a Gujarati Romeo.
āIām happy to have a director like Bhansali. He is very particular about the preparation.ā In fact, it was the filmmaker who suggested that with Ranveerās remarkable ability to pick up an accent (born and brought up in Mumbai, he played the quintessential Delhi boy in his debut), they should try something new in Ram Leela as well.
āWe went through the script and read all the dialogues in a Gujarati accent. The last part of the workshop was to imbibe the accent,ā Ranveer tells us about the training process. He did not want to sound funny or isolate any community. Neither did he want to sound like a caricature. But Ranveer was not one to give up easily. āIām putting myself out there and it is a risk. You have to do it with conviction.ā
The āprep workā for Ranveer did not end there. The actor who claims that he āloves dancingā but was last seen shaking a leg on screen for the song Thug Le from Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, had to undergo rigorous training. āI have been doing the kind of steps I havenāt done before. Itās taxing, but fun. I am pushing myself,ā says he.
Needless to say, Bhansali, who is known for shooting his songs on a huge scale, wanted his next āmusicalā to be as grand. And though he says that one of the reason, the director chose him as the male lead is his ādancing calibreā, Ranveer humbly adds, āI know I am not a very technical dancer but I enjoy my dance.ā
Interestingly, the film was to star Kareena Kapoor opposite Ranveer earlier. And the actor, who was looking forward to it, was left a little disappointed. āBut I hope to work with her. Yeh wali nahi to next time something will come along,ā the actor admits and says that the ābad newsā of Kareena opting out of the venture came to him right after he had come back after celebrating his birthday in Europe.
He was busy with his workshops in Gujarat when the makers signed on Deepika Padukone. And now Ranveer feels she is perfect for the part. In fact, she is every bit the slender, dusky Gujarati girl ā images of which Ranveer and Bhansali would come across in the many coffee table books.
In fact, the actor now feels that Deepika may just better fit the role. āThere were speculations about Kareena and I looking odd as a couple because of the age gap. Deepika is more or less my age and a younger pair in a love story works. She is like this ethereal beauty standing next to a roguish looking guy. I think we make a very good pair. Ours is a chemistry to look forward to,ā Ranveer sounds excited about his next.
And despite all the hard work, Ranveer is happy to be a part of a SLB project. āItās humbling that the guy who has made the kind of movies he has, would consider me at such an early stage. He said he wants to make me look like a heartthrob. He said he wanted girls to go crazy when they saw me in Ram Leela.ā
