Joker, Kunder And Bollywood’s Obsession With ‘Whiz-KId Frauds’

it all started in the 80, the worst decade in bollywood history when all fraudulent practices started. like ‘the fraud whiz kid director’, (many case studies as we shall see in this article),  projecting a flop and totally rejected actor (star son) as successful (ultimate case study sanjay dutt) projecting a flop film as ‘appreciated/critically accliamed (spearheaded by mahesh bhatt with naam and many other films) projecting oneself as the next ‘heir apparent’ or no 1 (as practiced by anil kapoor) and feeding films by buying tickets and dsitributing them for free (again anil kapoor)

but the ‘whiz-kid fraud’ trend was the most damaging of all as cinema is the director’s medium and if the director itself is ‘fraud’ then the film is doomed and at a macro level, the industry itself.

well the 1st two names that come to mind, really the ‘pioneers’ in teh filed of ftaud, were J P Dutta and mukul anand. (many include rahul rawail into the list but i disagree as rahul had credentials in hits like love story, betaab and arjun and went into a gradual decline ‘dacait’ downwards. but j p dutta and mukul anand were the biggest frauds in the history of bollywood.

1. MUKUL ANAND – mukul anand with zero script sense atlleast display a decent sense of music with his aitbaar but soon you wud realize it was all bappi lahiri’s ‘sporadic genius’. his 1st film was kannon kya karega which apparently had slick treatment (read shots copied from hollywood) his second ‘aitbaar  was a remake (a hall mark of all talentless frauds) of ‘dial m for murder’. both were flops but somehow the industry, including all top stars were convinced he is the next best thing. this led to such huge multi crore disasters as ‘sultanat and ‘main balwaan’. but producers and top stars kept backing him. at this stage vinod khanna returened from rajnish’s asharm in USA and started working in films again and the smooth talking mukul was the 1st one to sign him. perhaps out of cuiosity some ppl went to watch vinod khanna or watever but insaaf was a half success. that was it. bollywood put all its eggs in the ‘mukul anand basket’ and invested crores in the talentless man with zero scripts sense, zero music sense and zero pereformance sense. flop after huge flop followed in films like khoon ka khhon, maha sangram etc.

at this stage, amitabh bachchan came to his rescue and signed with him not one but 3 films. all were mere proposals with ghisa-pita revenge stories with a jaded bachchan hamming his guts out. agnipath wa s a disaster at boxoffice and laxmi-pyuaare’s jumma chumma made ‘hum’ just abt a clean hit followed by ho-hum khuda gawaah.

did the mukul anand fraud story end there. not at all. no less a man than subhash ghai with the best script sense and music sense aprt from great visual treatment and drama sense signed him to direct his most ambitious ‘trimurti’.  which again laid an egg at the box office. you cud be forgiven for thinking the industry wud wake up by now. but hell no! the industry handed him another huge project called ‘dus’ on terrorism in kashmir. finally it was a heart attack that did him in after ruining close ro 100 crores of the industry.

J P DUTTA – at the same time in the early 80s appared j p dutta. smooth talker that he was he convinced then hot property mithun chkaravarti and dharmendra to sign a film gulaami with him. j p was also into intellectual fraud and had arty pretensions. the only manifestation of which were the lanscapic shots of rajasthan in his films and yes – the handicraft/khadi gramodyog costumes. . after ghulaami his yateem, hathyaar, batwaara, kshatriya all were disasters but some how he kept getting crores to burn and biggest stars for his films.

At that stage dutta had a big hit. border (1997) wud ensure that dutta wud get another 50 cr to burn in refugee, LOC and umrao jaan.

SANJAY GUPTA – he started with a poster. yes the poster of ‘aatish’ with sanjay dutt in a wind blown bronzed look became a talking point and that led to sanjay gupta’s ‘dukaan’ of fraud going full throttle. aatish floped, so did raam shastra, hamesha and many more. still sanjay had no dearth of financiers (in an industry where the maker of superhit don did never find another producer) and stars. he did have half a hit in kaantein but gave numerous flops, producing as well as directing. the guy must have burnt another 100 cr of bollywood in his illustrous career.

VIDHU VINOD CHOPRA – as you must have realized there are two kind of whiz kid frauds in bollywood. the ‘commecial’ ones and the ‘arty’ ones. chopra was in teh latter category. with a half hit ‘parinda in his kitty he has given such disasters as 1942 a love story, kareeb, eklavya, and many more but never had any dearth of ppl willing to finance his films and actors willing to act in them. finally raajkumar hirani, an expert on pop philosophical films rescued chopra’s production house with munnabhai and 3 idiots. .

SANJAY LEELA BHANSALI – he was also very good at smooth talking stars into signing his films in the hope of an image change. i have special contempt for him as he has played fraud on salman khan more than once. wen no one was willing to do a role in his heroine oriented khamoshi, salman helped him out. but bhansali’s tale of a deaf-mute couple and their daughter set in a christain family in goa (a setting the wannabe will repeat many times as it helps copy shots from international films)  flopped and he was again in the doldrums but this time not only salman came himself but also brought in his freind ajay devgan. bhansali promised to make his next devdas, an ambitious 50 cr venture, with salman in the lead. but since salman had a low phase at the boxoffice wen devdas was ready to roll, he ditched salman. devdas a 50 cr film made 38 cr at boxoofice and its fate is still a mystery thanx to manipulation of the trade. somehow bhansali moved to his next fraud project black. after black no one was willing to touch his saanwariya with newcomers ranbeer-sonam. this time he went to salman with the promise of a 75 cr film baajirao-mastaani and salman did a special appearnce in saanwariya. baajrao never happned and instead he worked in guzarish with hrithik and aishwarya his 1st full fledged disaster (yes bhansali had been managing half successes so far). finally he understood his ‘aukaat’ and has been producing mindless masaaala like rowdy rathore.

apart from these there are various small time ones like nikhil advani, apoorva lakhiya, soham shah, sameer karnik etc who manage to play fraud on producers despite failure after failiure, mostly with the help of their smooth talking skills of convincing stars. shirish kunder was just one more in the sries of such frauds. i dont understand wat is the hullabullo abt him. except for the fact that he bugged a superstar, may be two.

    @alfa.one – i am not associating u with 70s-80s becoz u know abt the films of that era. but becoz u r possesive abt them. i mite mention hunterwali but i belong to the tiger era.

    @mkt – so u agree it was in a context. and it must have been a reaction to sum1 counting dtph an akshay success.

    here is the rough calculation of success rate of some of the big bollywood directors who helmed big projects

    1. raj kapoor – 90%%

    2. mehboob khan – 9o%

    3. manmohan desai – 90%

    4. yash chopra – 85%

    5. david dhawan – 80%

    6. sooraj barjatya – 100%

    and here are some less celeberated ones

    j ompraksah – 70%

    mohan kumar 60%

    anees bazmi – 70%
    andmany more.

    and then there are those who had huge success rates but did not get eqally big projects

    anil sharma

    chandra barot (don)

    dulal guha (the director of pratigya and dushman)

    kamaal amrohi (though he became too old wen he had a huge flop)

    but all the above names suggest there is no method in bollywood’s mabness.

    Danish jaise Zaid Hamid ke rakhailon, hallucination mein jeene walon ko Mukul Anand, SLB jaise diggaz to fraud hi nazar aayenge, aur fair sex se dutkare gaye, drunk-driving kar ke logon ko kuchalnewale “Bewade” aur apna doobe career ko bachane ke liye “Being Human” ka dhong karne wale hi pasand aayenge! Is “Coprophile arthropod” ko lagta hai Akshay ne pichhle wale se bhi jyada sadma diya hai! Had hai haramzadgi ki bhi! kuchh bhi?

    @akshay – thanx. but i hope u r not being sarcastic. tumhaare naam se shak ho raha hai.

    @aryan – no mission kashmir i thnk was below average. chk on boi.

    @ved z – at least i am not underage.

    thanx anyways for ur response on the article. and all such films apart from the producer, play a fraud on its leading hero. but hats off to the guy u are refrrring to. he manipulated the media so much that he even benefitted from a fraud project (devdas)

    @preity – bang on. i just left farhan out as he has so far only committed 2-3 frauds and none of them were huge disasters like others mentioned in the article.

    @nawaab – itna kyun bhadak rahe ho? preity is praising ur comments.

    @bunty – u r a godsend. i wish u were around wen tashan was actively spamming with fake lists.

    @tashan – miss u so much bro! where r u?

    @DANISH—-you claim suraj barjatya(the most overrated dir for me)—has 100% success ratio…so I THINK…YOU are THE DIRECTOR/PRODUCER…of….1)MAIN PREM KI DEEWANI HOON(DISASTER…taking 3 A listers at that time)…2)EK VIVAH AISHA BHI(PRODUCER–WRITER)…3)UFF KYA JADOO moHABBAT HAI(producer)

    SO IN his career span of 24 year he made 7 movies 3 of which are disaster…so HOW can you say his success ratio is 100%….I think you included him cause…He gave SALMAN KHAN 2 IMP movies of his career…but you are damn wrong…the 1 and only DIRECTOR/WRITER….WITH 100% success ratio is RAJKUMAR HIRANI..with 3 super hits within time of 9 years

  9. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

    @ Danish,,

    Kuch bhe likh doge kya.. I don’t know how you calculate %; some from your list..

    David dhawan – 80% ( Directed 42 movies, more than 25 duds, plus many averages)
    Sooraj barjatya – 100% (as nisheet pointed, what abt MPKDH)
    Anees bazmi – 70% (Directed 11 movies, 6 duds)

    And, I am too young to comment on the others in your list,, as I don’t know the box-office fate of their majority of the movies. Waise, I said clearly in that comment “barring a handful of people”, so you can exclude the exceptions. My point was, when the overall success ratio of industry is ~10%,, most of the people are bound to have numerous failures to their credit. So, what’s big deal ??

    Directing a remake of south film in bollywood is not an easy job infact it is as difficult as making a bollywood masala film.

    Both Wanted and Rowdy Rathore are the among the best films of respective actors salman and akshay in last few years full credit should be given to prabhu deva and he is no doubt the best person to direct south remakes in bollywood.

    agar mukul anand aur bhansali diggaj the to raj kapoor mehboob khan kya the?

    @nawaab – i seriously cant get it why some ppl are spitting venom on a post which is not even abt stars and fanwar.

    @butnty – i have stopped entertaining salman-akshay comparisons and i think so shud all salman fans. aksahy doesnt ahve any acheivements to be cmpared to salman. in fact its an insult to salman.

    for me its only salaman vs dilip kumar and amitabh bachchan.

    @nisheet –

    1. i was taking only films directed by sooraj,

    2. he has never directed a flop. even main prem ki diwani was a below average. rest are all super hits, bbs and atbbs.

    3. yes raju hirani has a 100% success rate as well but i was mostly mentioning veterans if u noticed.

    @mkt – i clear;y said ‘rough calculations’.

    and i bet in top top 60 directors, nobody wud have less than 50% success rate.

    for the top 20 the success rate wud be 60% and above.

    there will be top 10 with even higher success rate. now try comparing these overrated whiz kids with them.

    @serenzy – watching baazigar hurt my eyes and sensibilties a lot. yes ramu is a lso a flop director but he has not wastes so much resources (money and stars)

    @tony montana – off course boxoffice, the collective view and a comprehensive survey of it will declare the best film, best actor, best director. not some stuck-up pseudo intellectuals axxhole. (read opnion)

    @rj@prg – prabbhu deva is a much better director than mukul anand, jp dutta nd shirish kunder and company.

    @ danish,,

    rough calculations shouldn’t be that rough :)

    “and i bet in top top 60 directors, nobody wud have less than 50% success rate”

    Out-write wrong perception. Two from your own list of good directors..

    Devid Dhawan: 17 success out of 42 – that’s 40%
    Anees Bazmi: 5 success out of 11 – that’s 45%

    so are these not even in top 60 directors.. ??
    On the other hand, SLB as a director has 50% success (3 out of 6) is overrated. Good going !!!

    @mkt – lagta hai rough calculations e kaam nahin chalega. u deserve exact calculation.

    but then dont blame me if bhansali and company come in looking even worse.

    by the way like ank 16 baras ki, even u didnt get the gist of the post. its also abt wastage of resources, money and stars, getting hugely budgettted film afetr a hugelu budgetted flop, (if u notice most of the names i mentioned have not been producers-directors like subhash ghai or rak apoor or yash chopra) wasting other investers money on their creative whims and not gettinga ny public endorse ment of it reflected in boxoffice.

    ok sine u also look like u r solah abars ki, i will give u an example. i think anuraag kashayp is teh worst director in bollywood history, perhaps world history. but i did not include him in the list thougg he qualifies on all counts, except one.

    anurag has not wasted BIG money. he has indulged his pseudogiri on small budgetted films.

    now do you even vaguely get the larger concerns of this post.

    @ danish,,

    It appears that you haven’t read my earlier comment on the topic seriously. I replied you this way because you started throwing numbers in %, otherwise I don’t give a shit to what’s the success rate of director or actor. To me, each film in an individual entity and should be evaluated independently.

    Also, IMO, quality of an actor’s or director’s work (or overall movie) is not proportional to public endorsement. We have had enough examples on this in form of failures of several well-made movies and success of trashes. Yes, I agree that big names associated with a movie help in creating hype as well as generating initial revenues, but one more fact is that you never know what exactly will work at box-office and why.

    BTW, I am around double the age that you assumed.

  39. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    I understand that, since film making is a business, it makes perfect sense to assess the success in the monetary terms. The directors you are pointing have lost significant amount of money in their projects, but using the words like untalented or overrated is not that I agree with. They do their sincere effort in crafting the movie,,, sometime it works while on other occasions it doesn’t. When movie works,, credit goes to actor (in most cases), but when it fails,, it’s due to bad script, bad direction, bad screenplay etc.

    Most importantly, in the industry,, no one takes money on gun-point. If a producer / investor is convinced with the project overall then only cheques are issued,,
    Also,, in most cases they are satisfied with the movie before it hits the screen. So, if investors in their own judgment are happy with the movie, then no point in blaming anyone if the film fails at box-office.

  40. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    @mkt – except for public endorsemnt there is no way to arrive at the ‘quality’ of a movie. rest are all individual views.

    and if some directors are failig to connest to public despite huge oppotunities, funds and popular stars for me they are nothing but ‘talentless frauds’.

    and i know in the industry no one take smoney on gunpoint. thats y i have called them frauds, not robbers.

    and how do u know the producers were satisfied with the products before release? wat option did they have if they were not? bad mouth their film publicly and further dim the prospects?

    by the way have u noticed how most of these ‘whiz kids fraud’ usually ‘phansaaoed’ a new producer each time. wat does that suggest? why did producers not repeat them?

  41. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    @Danish,

    If public endorsement or footfall could be related to anything,, it has to be only and only the level of interest in a movie and not the quality of the movie.

    More number of people decided to watch a certain movie simply means the movie has created interest among more people (due to its theme, or actors, or promos, or music etc.). Now how these people find the movie quality-wise is an altogether different aspect. If you compare, more number of people went to watch a RA1 or TMK or Ready than say a Vicky Donar, A Wednesday, or Pyar Ka Panchanama. So, dose it prove that the later set of movies had poor quality ??

    There is absolutely no ground for relating the quality of a movie with number of people who decided to watch it. Period.

    Danish,

    “”@mkt – except for public endorsemnt there is no way to arrive at the ‘quality’ of a movie. rest are all individual views.”"

    What if I say that it your individual view (read opinion or whatever word u use for that) that public endorsement is an indicator of the ‘quality’ of a movie. Or has it ever been proved by any scientific theory… if not, then throw ur footfall theories in dustbin as they reflect only and only ur opinion :)

  43. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    @mkt – to begin with u didnt answer my question – if they were not frauds and producers were satisfied why did they not repeat those whiz kids mostly.

    and now another question – iff footfall just reflects public interest then who decides quality?

    and yes! if the footfall of ra1 is higehr than vicky donor, its a better film. unles u dont have another scientific way to judge appreciation.

    and yes u can say the above is my individual view but that wont get sanjay leela bhansali’s producer any more money for guzarish, will it?

  44. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    @danish,

    There is no scientific way at all to judge appreciation, but that doesn’t give you any right to pull out any absurd theory and say that it’s the best way. Absence of knowledge should not be considered an excuse to promote incorrect theories.

    Now, coming onto your questions,,

    1) “”"if they were not frauds and producers were satisfied why did they not repeat those whiz kids mostly.”"”

    Check the facts before making such claims. Nitin Manmohan produced 3 of Mukul Anand movies: Insaaf, Maha-Sangram, and Dus. Also, Romesh Sharma produced Aitbaar and Hum. Same way, G P Sippy repeated Sanjay Gupta for Hamesha after Aatish, however mejority of his movies were produced by himself. There will be other such references but I do not want to spend time on this..

    2) “” iff footfall just reflects public interest then who decides quality?”"”"

    I already answered this.. There is no correct method to decide quality.. but then we have to live with this fact.. don’t try to pull gimmick as if your footfall method is best.

    There is No Point telling Danish all that Yaar!

    Chuck it.

  46. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    @MKT – my footfall theory is not absurd. it just appears absurd to you as it assumes everyone is as qualified as you to judge.

    for instance its not possible that all the 2cr plus ppl who watched ett did not like it. majority did. and if raa1 was watched by 1 cr, it must have been liked by a propotioannte number (half of not total number who watched but half of the total number who liked ett). same wud be true of a vicky donor or kahaani.

    @mkt – u just pick up nitin manohan. wat abt arjun hingorani, image films, yash johar, manoj desaimain balwan producers?

    wat abt j p dutta – why did bikram jeet dehel, nadiadwala, salim of aftab pictures, pushpa movies, never repeated him?

    mukul was repeated mainly becoz he managed to convince big stars to work with him. dutta despite that wud not be re touched by any of his producers. bhansali played fraud on sibte hasan rizvi, bharat shah, the birla’s of applause entertainment (who shut shop after black) and finally managed a multi film deal with utv before the release of even his 1st film with them.

    do u want more data?

    as for sanjay gupta he took on line production and fleeced even more financiers. try finding out how many are after his blood, including sanjay dutt.

    @and i have already told u why footfall is the best method.

    @serenzy – off course there is no point telling me anything illogical and stupid.
