From empty theatres to records, Salman sees it all in 3 years

Joginder Tuteja

18th September 2009, a day I would never forget. Stepping in to watch a evening show at a premium multiplex, I realised to my horror that the auditorium was barely 30%-40% occupied. The film was ‘Wanted’. A Salman Khan starrer no less. And even though the mass centres (especially single screens) had picked up with weekend throwing up some good numbers, multiplexes had a different story to tell. Well, to begin with at least.

This was also the time when reassurance from veteran filmmakers like David Dhawan (Partner, amongst others), Satish Kaushik (Tere Naam) and Boney Kapoor (No Entry, Wanted) had started coming in.

‘The film would do wonder on Eid, you would see’ – I remember them telling me in unison!

Teen saal baad…

buddha chukandar tattuja bhhol gaya a solo salman starrer mpk had made 15 cr in 1989 emerging biggest hit of the decade and that hahk had made 70 cr in 1994.

wat a patronizing piece. abbey ullu ke paththon sach kab bologe.

that salman is the greatst star ever in the history of bollywood.

    uff ye buddhey!

Danish calling salman the greatest star ever seems like a joke! He is not even in my top 10 alltime stars.

Today the biggest star is “marketing” and “promotion”. Release any big movie with proper marketing in a holiday period and you will get a massive grosser! This is a fact.

This same movie. ETT if released on an average friday which is not a holiday week, like diwali or eid, and with limited promotion, the movie would flop!

This proves that today the main star is “marketing&promotion” and the movie has to release on a holiday like eid or diwali. Remember this is the same salman khan who was delivering flop after flop for around 5 years it is just that he has realized the today that marketing is every important!

Bottom line. For a big movie No marketing No holiday = FLOP! regardless of who is in the movie!

    therealdon –

total successes – amitabh 45, salman 34, dilip kumar 30

total hits in top 5 -salman 23, dilip lumar 23 amitabh 23

total biggest hit of the year – salman 9, dilip kumar 8, amitabh 5

total biggest hits of the decade – salman 2, amitabh 1, dilip kumar 1

total atbbs – salman 5, amitabh 3, dilip kumar 2,

longevity – salman 24 years, dilip kumar 20 years, amitabh 19 years (gap between 1st and last big hit in the 1st round of career)

as you can see on most scales salman is already ahead and he is just 47 and in the middle of his career while the other two have completed their run

so who is the biggest star in your opinions?

    1. ready was not releasedf on a holidayu and was a blockbuster hit.

    2. ra1 had the biggest hype and marketiung and flopped.

    3. tell me which 5 years did salman had flops after flops?

Danish comparing movies from the 60s, 70s to todays movies is plain wrong! There was a different criteria for hit or flop then. How on earth can you compare movies of today to movies of the past. Today there is revenue coming from sattelite and other avenues. Today a movie can flop in cinema but still be a success overall. So do not give me this rubbish of how many hits people have.

I am talking of stardom! I am not talking of revenues, today any top hero with proper marketing and proper release date will deliver a “blockbuster”. you mention the word ATBB? What is that?? “All Time Blockbuster”? When did this word orginate? There was no such thing as this in the 60s, 70s, 80s, or even 90s. This word came out only 8-9 years ago during the internet expansion. So please do not use this rubbish with me by comparing how many ATBB stars have as this word only orginated a few years ago!

Danish you are comparing Salman Khan to Dilip and Amitabh??
Amitabh was number1 star for over 18 years! undisputed number1 star!. Since 1989 to now, how many years has salman khan been number 1?? Answer to this question will lay to rest this debate.

I again repeat, Today the biggest star is “Marketing&Promotion” and “holdiay” get any top hero (salman, srk, aamir, akshay) in a big budgeted movie, give it unprecedented hype, release the movie in a holiday period the movie will be a big grosser!! It would not matter which star is in the movie! Same movie if released on a normal friday with limited hype the movie may flop! Todays star is “release date” and “marketing”.

    @therealdon

    1. all fims from all eras can be compared on scintific scales.

    2. i took only theaterical verdicts. where is the satellite revenue mentioned?

    3. ‘the biggest hit of the year’ is the most ‘time neutral’ scale as in it each film competes in the same business dynamics with its contemporary films. and in that department salman is no 1 with 8 biggest hits of the year till age 47.

    4. if any top hero can garner big numbers at festival with marketing/hype, why did nor ra1, tees maar khan, action replay, don 2 did it?

    5. there can never be any formula in any phase in any business where all projects will be profitable.

    6. usually the top 2-3 films each decade have been declared atbbs. (if u notice boi counts only sholay for amitabh, i included muqaddar ka sikandara and amar akbar). nomenclature doesnt matter. u can call them watever u want.

    7. stardom is a subjective term. revenues/footfall are quantifiable. there si no way to prove that an actor with less footfall is a more popular/talented actor.

    8. no way was amitabh no 1 star for 18 years. he was no 1 in 1975, 1977, 1978. 1979 and 1983. salman has been no 1 in 1989. 1991, 1994. 1998, 1999, 2005, 2010, 2011, 2012. thats almost double of amitabh.

so is this debate laid to rest now?

all that jazz abt marketing and hype can be said abt all eras. keep subjective opinions to urself.

‘This same movie. ETT if released on an average friday which is not a holiday week, like diwali or eid, and with limited promotion, the movie would flop!’

Is that why the film is making around 12-14 on its 7th day. Today big films don’t even as big as this. The bottom line is this Salman is by far the biggest star today and is well on course to give his 3rd highest grosser in a row. ALL SOLO films :D

Danish number1 star is determined by craze, opening, biggest star, biggest remuneration. 1975-1992. It was amitabh non-stop! no star came close to him in fan-following. He was number 1-10.

Salman Khan has never really been number 1. Even after maine pyar kiya he was not number1. Even after HAHK he was never number 1. It is only in the last 2 years you can argue he is number 1. Please speak from facts and not make up lies. I still think that today there is not a true number1 it depends on the latest movie.

From 1989-2012. when was salman really been number1?? Number1 for me is someone who gets the biggest openings, biggest craze, biggest star, who every producer wants to work with, who demands and gets the biggest salary! SRK has been number 1 for more years than salman during this period!

I think after Amitabh it has been SRK who has been the biggest star in the last 20 years not salman!

ETT was released on 3300 screens made 32 crores first day..

What will happen in 3 years time when movies will be released on over 5000 screens. Top movies will have 60crore opening day. Cinema is expanding at a fast rate i do not think that we are that far when movies will make 100crore first day. Maybe 7 years away….

    Joginder T – What a stupid article…!!

You are saying as if all Salman movies were having empty theatres before 2009?? Even Wanted was running to packed houses in all Single Screens.

These guys bring soo much innovative ideas to pull down Salman. I mean cmon … now that there is no way to run down ETT they started floating these types of articles.

  14. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

He is right in a way, after Wanted, look at how Veer and London Dreams fared at the Box Office. I’m not even going to mention MAMK. Now prior to Wanted, he had Yuvraaj, Heroes, God Tussi Great Ho, Marigold, and Salaam E Ishq. These films were literally FLOP films.

      1) Veer opened very well…. far from empty houses.
      2) Prior Wanted – Partner, No Entry, Mujhse Shadi Karoge, Lucky, Maine Pyar Kyu Kiya all had opened very well.

I am not even counting his ATBB’s in 80′s and 90′s.

This is just a LAME excuse to pull down Salman.

—-Also you mentioning Heroes in your list is really FUNNY.

Rockie, prior to Wanted, you have to admit Salman was going through a rough phase becuase right when WANTED was declared a big HIT/Superhit, all these articles came out saying “Salman is back” or “Wanted is Salman’s Comeback Film” etc.

Joginder Tuteja is a SRK ass licker. This is a known fact by most. The way he defended that crapfest ra1 was beyond funny heck it almost killed me in amusement. Now he is busy trying to degrade SOS and pumping that Yash Chopra film.

I hope he is reading this as I have wanted to say this for a long time.

On top of that look at BOI not updating the film hahahah

Article based on facts… but sadly people bashing the author just cos he likes srk WTF

  17. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Fasel – I don’t think it’s very difficult to gauge the intentions of the author. Agreed, he might be stating facts to an extent..but the way he’s putting it, the way he’s projecting the whole scenario…especially to the ones who hvnt followed salman’s career thru out but reading his article are being mislead.

He only writes good for srk and Akshay. That’s alright. Some amount of favoritism is fine, but you can pick any article relating any of the 3 stars..and you will clearly see the bias in his words.
And I hope you do this from a neutral perspective.
Aaj inke paas koi choice par salaam thokna. Khud ki dum par aaj salman top pe hai, without bowing down to these media whores.
Aaj har koi acha likhega, behti Ganga mein haath Jo dhone hai!
All this bs about how madhuri stole the show in hahk, is nothing but media driven propaganda.
A general audience would see the movie, come out of the theatre, and praise everything about it. Madhuri was definitely praised for looking beautiful..but nothing like it was just her n nothig else. After the whole MF Hussain hype, n the paintings and then everybody talking about how they feel the same, articles kept pouring in one after the other.
In all these media showers, they convieniently sidelined the lead actor and the director, and only spoke of the heroine. In a way that would credit her for the entire film.
The repeat audience was due to the genre, nature of the film and the songs which grew on the people mostly after release.
Salman never cared about the media, until he got wiser, although a tad too late for his age.
Par jab der se aaye hain, toh durust hi aayenge.

And mark my words, the way people feel about Salman today, all he has to do is create a bare minimum excitement for his movies. People will come in hordes.
Today even his haters can’t deny the kind of position he is in!

One who climbs a ladder one day has to climb down the same ladder another day. But I hope in the case of Salman, it’s either his old age or his bad health that brings him down rather than a disastrous BO fate..!

@RJ – excellent comment above and the same dmedia whores tried to project Karan Arjun as a SRK film. I was 5 when that film released so dont know what went on at that time but seeing as SRK walked away with the awards I can bloody well guess the biassedness.

The media tried to destroy Salman but failed. Now he reigns as no1 and these same people can do NOTHING but accept it. Still Salman is bindass as ever. Just watch his latest interview with Omar Qureshi. Rocking as always.

Yes salman had really bad worst phase of 3 years between 2006-08 but even then he had given Blockbuster film like partner. Making such article and with the above headline is nothing but clear bias and lame attempt to pull down salman.

Great cooment RJ. Very nicely summarized. Media has always portrayed Salman as bad guy and have undermined his success. Even now by floating such articles they are doing the same.

All I can say is Joginder wrote this article with bad intentions of downgrading Salman.

Salman has hit is comfort zone with the entertainers and the audience is loving it..no questions asked.

    Wanted
    Dabbang
    Ready
    BodyGuard
    ETT

This is amazing run and 4 of those movies are 120plus crore movies.

Looking at this…i would say this is amazing show of stardom but and thats a big but. I hear people in general saying agar Sallu ke fan hotoh movie dekhna ….typical Salman film hogi isme toh wohi masala bhara hoga..

All i am saying is that Salman’s 90s and 00-10 hits comprised of all kinds of movies..family, comedy, romantic comedy, action…Now…Salman is totally into Action entertainment. ETT was somewhat romantic but Salman felt highly disinterested and lacked chemistry with Katrina…To be honest..Salman didnt bother..he just was on his own in the movie proving Yash Raj what they had missed.

  22. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

cticize, The irony is that the least grosser – Wanted – is Salman’s most liked film among these 5. But it is very difficult to make fans understand that a film’s success is in its growth, not numbers.

  23. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@therealdon – for mediabiggest star may be decided on subjective matters, but for me and posterity biggest star is teh one who gives biggest hits. period. and amitabh gave biggets hits of the year just 5 times, dominating the industry entirely for just 3 years (1977-1979) salman has had 3 such periods (1989-1991, 198-1999,2009-2012)

ye kya srk ke baap ka raaj chal raha hia ki after mpk also salman wasnt number 1, nor after hahk. put ur opinions in ur axxhole becoz thats where they belong.

salman has been the bigegst and most popular star of the last 24 years.

@shaludidi – wat makes u conclude wanted is the most liked salman film of the last 4 years? did u do a comprehensive survey? in my list bodyguard is no 1 followed by wanted.

i fail to understand how these ppl reach absurd conclusions? wanted may be top for many (even for me its second from top after bodyguard) but i am not god.

footfalls suggest its either dabangg or bodyguard that are the most loved. and soon it might be ett.
