Salman Khan: Bhai please thoda sa gaur farmaiye

I enjoyed Ek Tha Tiger. I am enjoying the fact that it may do great business and break records. I liked the effort and thought behind the movie- also the finesse and the restrained humor. Of screen I enjoyed Salman’s promotional interviews and his trips to TV (Jhalak Dikhlaaja might be epic too). But But But… I am not very happy.

I think Salman Khan is the best actor in India today. Yes actor. I have seen almost all his films and all the moments he creates on screen- his samajh, his pakad, his inventiveness, his confidence, his presence- all of it is unparalleled. But very few people are going to agree with me on this. Very few will agree with me objectively- mann se kaafi fans maan lenge yeh baat.

There are a few things that Salman said recently that I didn’t like at all-
1. I will do only action films
2. I don’t know which film to do next
3. It is sad that no film has broken 3 Idiots record in the last 3 years
4. Business is growing- screens are being added- collections are becoming more transparent
5. It is all black and white for me- emotion chalta hai ya nahin chalta hai. It is either good or bad.
6. I will always be larger than life- this is how I am.

Salman is stuck in a comfort zone now. And now that he has achieved a Demi-God Bhai status everywhere- in the industry too- his friends will not even try to break that comfort zone.

The other day I was watching Guide. I always wanted Salman to do a film like it. Dev Anand was hardly an actor but he still did it. Salman is far better in my opinion- but he won’t touch a story like Guide. I want him to do a film like Kabhie Kabhie. I want him to do a film like Anand. I want him to do a film like Mausam (old one), a film like Shakti, a film like Namkeen too. A film like Masoom he has already done- Jab Pyaar Kisi se Hota hai- and it is one of my fav Salman films

But he is now stuck in that high stakes business game where he will only do films that larger than life. I understand all his points about how he needs to please his fans. But bhai I am also your fan. 2 saal mein ek baar try to maaro. After this current streak of 5 solo blockbusters he is in a state to dictate, in a state to command. Ek aisi film bana do jo Anurag Kashyap so bata de ki honest aur acchi stories kya hoti hain. Ek aisi film jo Gulzar ko apne din yaad dila de. Ek aisi film jo yeh Alternate Cinema ke champions bane jo phirte hain un hein realize kara dein ki woh chutiye hain aur kuch nahin. Ek aisi film kar do bhai.

Yes do Dabangg, do Ek Tha Tiger- maybe also do a No Entry or a Kick. No worries. I enjoy them too. But saal mein ek chhoti se film so sirf ek kahaani ho- aur kuch nahin- with no worries about the box office- no worries about how fans would react- I want even the Anupama Chopra’s to take you seriously (and not treat you just as an experience). SHe is not worth it I know- but still… Once in a while do a film jis mein shor machane ka mann na kare. Cheekhne ka mann na kare. Seeti Bajane ka khayal bhi na aaye dimaag mein.

@Piyush – happy you mentioned Jab Pyar Kisse Se Hota Hai. I love that film and Salman delivered a solid performance. Plus it had a brilliant soundtrack.

He wont do Kick so nothing to worry about. Most probably his next film will either be Sher Khan or Sooraj Bajratya film. In the screening I saw RKS and Rohan Sippy having a chat with Salman. Would be nice if he worked them. I also saw Subhash Ghai, hope he doesn’t work with him :P

Piyush..He is in his late 40s (so is Srk,Aamir,Akshay and Ajay)…All these people will do whatever has the biggest chance of makes moolah..because they know there time is going to end very soon (max another 4-5 years, before they start looking really old for typical Indian hero)

aamir is probably the only one who can make a dhobi ghat (however forgettable that was) and a Taare Zameen Par…because he has taken the expectation of audience in a totally different direction..(when was the last time you saw him in a typical Indian “HERO” setting the way srk, salman and akshay often appear)

Srk will try to bank upon his romance forte..Ajay will do whatever massy he can and Akshay kumar will deliver hits and flops because he is the biggest example of bhed chaal (although I was surprised to know he’s doing Special 26)

    @Suparbh,

I know that it won’t happen. But please I don’t want Salman to do a Dhobhi Ghaat either. I was not talking about pretentious stuff- I mentioned clearly- simple stories made from the heart- honest intentions- like they made in the old days-

Tare Zameen Pe- Yes- But the best bits of the movie were when Aamir was not in the frame.

Sanjeev Kumar did such films well into his 50s I guess- so the age should not be a problem- Salman’s physique can be a problem though- but that can be taken care of by some intelligent styling.

Mujhe pata hai kuch hone nahin waala- bas khayal aaya toh keh diya

  4. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

@Naveed- even if he doesn’t do Kick- my point still remains- even if RKS or Rohan Sippy work with him right now it will all be this huge star in a larger than life role with record box office. Meri wish kuch aur hai. I want people to take him seriously as an actor- which won’t happen with him doing these films. But I guess one cannot hope to get everything.

I saw an interview in which Salman said – “Suraj Barjatya narrated a script to me. I liked it and will be working on it. If such movies dont work I will get back to action”. It clearly shows that he is ready to do a family movie like HAHK or HSSH provided it interests him. Just shows that he has not become complacent.

Totally agree,he should do a movie which is like low budget fair. But at the same time its very difficult because the fans he has want to see only him and not movie. Anyways enjoy his superstardom which is at high and I mean seriously high.

to be remembered as a legend u need box office dominance like what salman has today.i hope he doesnt stray too much and has a tab on audience’s pulse and all his forthcoming films be a BB/ATBB.thats how legends are made.look at rajinikanths films.they are pukeworthy.almost all amitabh films had absolutely nothing except his persona/charisma.and they are the two biggest stars in history of indian cinema.i hope salman becomes the third to achieve a god like status.for that he has to give a lot a BB/ATBB which he is doing now and i hope it continues for another 10 yrs.and it is possible.i watched masand interview with salman nd watched a interview he had given for partner in 2007 on another tab on youtube.he looks almost the same in both interviews.if he can look as young now as he was in 2007 i dont see any reason why he cant maintain his looks for another 10 yrs.there are a lot of advances in medicine which can make u look very young.and it doesnt matter how “OLD U ARE”, what matters is “HOW OLD U LOOK”.salman can maintain his looks for a long time if he is serious

    Dr Nick,

You have simply not understood the essence of Piyush’s article.
And from you comment it seems you want Salman to do just blockbusters no matter how pukeworthy they are.

    suprabh,
i understod what piyush said.but what m saying is he has reached a stage where the stakes are just too high.and moreover at this age he cant fit the bill for diff roles.do u think he can pull off a role which requires innocence like say a jab pyaar kissi se hota hai.he has build a image which overpowers the characters he plays.so ppl wud not accept him in diff roles.so instead of trying to do something different why not consolidate whats working for u right now.

  10. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

    @Dr.nick

I am not wanting him to stop giving blockbusters. I never said that. Like I said I think he is the best actor in my eyes. I want to world to think the same way. He can always do a small film in between 2 films- a story that suits his sensibilities- but a story that is honest and thoughtful- and meaningful. Gulzar kind of cinema.

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

but do u think ppl will accept him this way.ppl want to see “BHAI” on screen and not a character.his off screen image is too strong to let him try diff roles.even in 90′s he was giving hits with diff cinema like pktdk, hddcs,nd a judwaa at the same time.now he is at a diff pedestal.dont u think he should wait a little longer.i mean to satisfy his creative streak he can do certain movies later.why now when its the best time of his career.yes if he can pull off the barjatya movie nd make it a superhit then he can try whatever he wants.

  11. tony montana

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 9 Thumb down 7

“.look at rajinikanths films.they are pukeworthy.”
if rajnikanth’s films are pukeworthy ,salman’s films are shit worthy..

“almost all amitabh films had absolutely nothing except his persona/charisma.”

from the above statement i can safely assume you havent watched almost 90% of amitabh movies..

@topic.. i believe salman is currently doing what he does best.. dont really think people will accept him in character oriented roles neither salman have script sense or the talent to act in varied roles.. he needs to maximise the success ratio as he is on a roll and he is doing exactly the same..

but itz amazing how his fans think him as the best actor right now in bollywood when he himself agrees that he plays all the characters in a same way which appeals to his fans..

“best actor in bollywood” … i LOL’ed for 1 second and looked at the author of this post.. itz kinda funny how even the sanest of minds become totally biased on the persons or things they love a lot…

  12. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 2

    1. ye hota hai genuine, neutral criticizm. acknowledge the guys legendary talents and boxoffice achievments and then point out wat u think is missing instead of baised criticizm, distortion of box office, subjective interpretations of both box office and quality, left handed complimenst and patronising commentary.

    2. though i like wat u are saying i wud like to change the list of films i want salman to do. i want him to do a 3 idiots, adeewar, a sholay, a ganga jamuna, an awaara, a mother india or a mughal e aazam.

and he shud stay strictly clear of stuff like mausam (though i loved it but an attempt to make mausam, yes mausam old, may end up as main aur mrs khanna today)

and offcourse stay miles away from dhobi ghat, chak de, swades, lagaan kind of pretentious stuff. either do a bandit queen/hazaaron khwahishein aisi (pure high art) or do a mughal e aazam (the best it gets)

    3. dewnpiyush u know wat? salman knows it! and guess wat? salman is just about to do it.

popular media has tried to undermine him all along despite all records. once he sets the records straight, he will be very comfortable. i kno u felt bad he seems keen to break 3 idiots’ record but it makes me very happy. once he does it u ave plenty of all time classics coming that will end up as all time blockbusters as well. and if some of them dont, well we dont mind a tere naam.

  13. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

    @Tony Montana,

Well I can answer why I feel he is the best actor in Bollywood. But I want Salman to do such work that you acknowledge it on your won. Because right now whatever I may say- it will be falling on deaf or pretending to be deaf ears.

  14. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

    @Danish,

Thanks. Well if Salman knows it, it’s great. But I doubt it. He knows that he cannot afford to be repetitive- in terms of story or even action scenes- that much is clear. But the way things have become right now, I don’t think he will think about doing a simple film now which has nothing else but a honest story.

By Mausam I didn’t mean a story like that- I mean just a story which is at a different level than his normal films. A Tere naam of course- but it looks like an aberration in his filmography- Kyonki was an attempt- but couldn’t really achieve much. Every now and then he has attempted different stories- But I am talking about the current phase only- which touch wood is going awesome. But I wish people like Tony Montana too start to take him seriously. Yes, universal appreciation is impossible- but an artist should always strive for it.

His paintings are so thoughtful- if he puts similar thought in his movies- he will create masterpieces. His fans might not accept that- but he will win new fans- for the old fans he can continue to do the films he is doing currently. That’s what I want.

  15. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

@dwnpiyush – let me elaborate my point.

i wud like salman to do either real high art, films with universally socially relevant themes, egalitarian values and 100% realizm like bandit queen and hazaaron khwaahishein aisi, but this looks difficult now.

    or

i want him to do wat looks possible. that is new directors making attempts to make epics like godfather, mughal e aazam, sholay etc with him. trust me 2 more blockbusters (which might come within the next 11 months dabangg 2 and sher khan) and salman will be yearning for those kind of films.

and believe u me, atleast 10000 aspiring/established directors are doing the rounds of everything from yashraj to utv to even balaji with scripts like that. bas bhai ke mood badalne ka intezaar hai. and i think it will happen in one year.

and wat he shud definitely not even try is letting an anurag kashyap or ab bhansali anywhere near him. its the hijda movies that he needs to avoid.

  16. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

@dwnpiyush – i will do the needful for you and try to explain to tony montana. for all u know he might understand.

tony – its asimple 10 steps excersize.

    1. first pick up a copy of, no not maine pyaar kiya but biwi ho to aisi. just fast forward to those scenes where he gives attitude to the poor orphan girl who loves him./ notice 2 things.

    a. the effortless ease.
    b. the fire in his eyes.

    2. then go to mpk. just see the kind of guy-next-door spontaneity he displays in the scenes with his mom and bhagyashree in kitchen. the kind u only saw ppl especially trained in that school of acting, like amol palekar being able to carry off. not even amitabh bachchan and rajesh khanna got that real in hrishikesh mukherji movies. and to think salman was doing a mainsteram love story and it was just his second film at age 23.

    3. watch hahk and saajan from the same perspective rather than jaundiced eyes.

    4. skip most of bhansali’s labored khamoshi with just performances of 4 leads to salvage it. go to the climax church scene. dont cry much. men dont cry.

    4. you dont need to skip any parts of biwi no 1, thoroughly entertaining as it is. watch the climax scene (aadmi kutta hota hai dialogues) and the way he cries, real, funny, inventive. compare that crying to ‘eyebrow’ histrionics of his contemporaries.

    5. watch the graveyard scene with helen in hum dil de chuke sanam. and the climax where he lets asihwarya go. and talks to his dead father. if u r human, u will crumble. then go to the song ‘jhonka hawa ka’. after that pick up a copy of dil chaahta hai to see how aamir shamlessly copied salman in the tanhai song.

    6. my hands shiver as i come to type about tere naam. actually i cant. just watch from the time he is injured. i stop this one.

    7. watch jaanemann. actually no need. just watch ‘sau rang hain’ song. u will know wat i mean.

    8. go to any random scene in london dreams. any scne i said. there will be a lump in ur throat.

    10. watch the bodyguard garden scene. actually i cant write anymore. i am going to watch it right now.

Piyush v thoughful article . Exactly what I feel Salman is immensely talented but he needs to make usage of his full potential . I love his masala genre but I would really like to see him playing the sensitive roles as well , ppl are addicted to his chulbel pandey avatar but his charismatic magic of prem will always remain my fav character.

  19. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

Just giving blockbusters doesn’t put him in All Time Greatest Actor and I agree with Piyush that he should diversify his choice of scripts. Right now he is at top and giving some of the biggest hits which is a right and favorable time for him to perform CDI, Lagaan, RDB, Swadesh or TZP type of movies.

He said many times that he won’t take up serious roles as he is not comfortable to do it or cannot justify the role. Pehle try to karo miyan, nateeja baad mein dekhenge..

  20. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

Honestly salman shouldn’t even try doing anything else. He should just continue doing blockbusters. Only requirment is it needs to be entertaining.
Who does he need to prove anything to? And why?

exactly RJ.its not for nothing that the film industry is called entertaiment industry.the film needs to entertain.but there may be different interpretations of entertainment.what may be entertaining to one may be idiotic for others.

    Absolutely spot on RJ

and Piyush forget it buddy there are some who will NEVER like Salman and even if they like a film of his they will NEVER admit it. I will always favor the Salman of the early 90′s. He was just sooo good as Prem. Such ease and such innocence only he could have done. On top of that in Karan Arjun the fire and rage was great to see. He does comedy well.

As long as he is entertaining his fans who cares what others think.

P.S I know your intention was good behind this post and I am sure Salman knows he has to do something different as he can’t keep doing the same thing. This is one reason he will do Sher Khan as it’s something he has never done before. Plus Rajat Arora (from what I hear) has co written the script/dialogues so that should be awesome. He is behind OUATI and TDP.

  23. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 2

i completely understand ur anguish piyush bhau.. :(

but take it from me… salman will never be known as a great actor and he himself is responsible for that. he is a fine actor but a great one .. far fetched. lot of tillu fans dont even consider him as an actor.

there are only few star actors in the eyes of audience.. Dilip Kumar, amitabh bachchan and Shah rukh Khan!!

and there is a small breed of pseudo intellectuals who think tillu and ajay are also good actors..

but the general perception is .. Shah rukh khan is the biggest of em all right now since 20 years!! it will take a miracle and atleast 25 odd extra ordinary superlative films for sallu to prove , he is a good actor

u knw what Rajni kanth is a great actor but he never got his due… his stardom washed away all his attributes..

Nice write up. But I feel like this feeling is more influenced by the fact that some non-sallu fans are saying salman is doing same kind of movies like ready, dabangg and bodyguard. Yet when salman does something different in ETT, the same bunch of people comapre it with dabangg and say noone blew “shitty” while watching ETT…
I do agree that it will be best if salman does one different movie in two years. but I don’t mind if he continues doing movies like partner, no entry, dabangg, wanted, ready, bodyguard and ETT cuz I like salman best in these movies…

  25. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

the main problem with ett is that it cudnt satisfy the hunger of rickshawalla fans of sallu. his biggest fan base is amongst the autowallahs and rickshawallas. they cudnt see their idol running after a girl with a bag on his shoulder and doing gulamgiri. thats blasphemous for them. Bodyguard was a shit film and very few films can match the shittyness of bg and ready but rickshawallas approved of the heroism sallu showed in those films , but here katrina is real tiger.. sallu just meows …

ett is a dissaster for core sallu fans!!

nyways .. Piyush I agree with you … I am happy that Salman did ETT which is not regular Salman movie. Maybe some are not happy with that but it is fine. MAJORITY are loving it.

He is also planning for Sooraj’s next movie which will again be much different.

He is mixing it nicely … ETT is different but there is Dabangg2 which will be a full blown masala and everyone will lap it up big time.
Next year he has Sher Khan and Bade Bhaiyya … .again a nice mix.

I am all happy with the way Salman is planning his movies. As an actor SALMAN is the most natural actor in current breed and people love him for that.

@chalu – dilip kumar amitabh bachchan and salman khan. those are the three greatest commercial actors of bollywood. and hats off to chal mere bhai dialogue writer to include this in his film 10 years back.

and the whole world looks at sharukh khan as the biggest ham ever of bollywood.

and guys just wait – forget lagaan, swades, chak de, rang de basanti and other pseudo stuff. salman’s vision will ensure grand movies like mother india and mughal e aazam are coming.
