JISM 2 failing miserably.

JISM 2 after a rocking opening, saw steep fall on saturday because of negative public reactions and today on Sunday, though the film did manage to go above saturday collections, but still the collections are too disappointing considering this is the best day for any film.

If Sunday collections stays below Friday’s collections (7.5cr), then that won’t be really surprising. Multiplexes literally crashed yesterday at big cities where it opened to good collections.

My estimation for Sunday collections is 7cr. Its good for the kind of film it is, but aftre such an opening, such drops and collections suggests doomsday for JISM 2 further. Also, there is GANGS OF WASSEYPUR 2 making its way on Wednesday, so chances are JISM 2 will warp up within 35crs-40crs.

No doubt the film will make good money for its investors, but its trending has been extremely poor.

Jism 2 had a heavy fall on Saturday as it collected around 5.50-5.75 crore nett as per early estimates. The overall figures of the two days and paid previews are still very good at 14.50 crore nett plus but the trend suggests the film is on a fast downhill slide.

The film crashed badly in the areas where it had a big start like Rajasthan, Bihar and CPCI markets as these markets were down in the 35-40% range. The other circuits also fell but not as much as these mass circuits. The drop is one of the biggest ever on day 2 when the first day has not been a holiday.

It will be interesting to see what happens on Sunday but it can be pretty much ruled out that the film will collect as much on Sunday as it did on Friday.

This is a great news, such horrible movies deserves to flop. Jism2 may not flop boxofficewise but definitely in public perception

Stll it will be a success economically … business of 25-28 Crore life time … even after such all time negative feedback. Weekend era rocks.

Almost 10 years back “Ek choti si love story” came with even bigger hype and had similar trend at box-office, Excellent first day collections and then crashed. Despite excellent opening that movie was complete disaster .. wrapped up under 4 Crore.

Thanks to weekend era, Jism-2 will end up at success commercially. As it was rightly said by a journalist few months ago .. “Bollywood doesn’t flop any more” .. http://www.tehelka.com/story_m.....lywood.asp

Opening itself turning the movies into a success.

Jism 2′s trending is going to be in the ‘Disaster’ category but it will still be called a hit because of the opening. But called a hit by whom? Definitely not the public. How does it matter if a few trade people call it a hit?

Superstar sam, Murder 2 trending was 2.2 on my trending score – strictly Average. Bol Bachchan’s is going to be 2.6 which is Semi-Hit. Like I have said many times before, competition does not make much difference to a liked movie. And BB itself had very mixed WOM, so one can imagine how negative Murder 2′s trending was.

Actually these tags like Below Average, Average are not of much significance. Any movie which does not trend at least Above Average is a rejected movie.

yakuza has made a very good point here.. these days movies are largely dependant on the weekend boxoffice..

ask 100 people who have seen jism 2 whether they have liked it or not barring 2 to 3 persons im sure everyone will say it as bakwas.. But still boxoffice wise itz a success..

Tony, BB’s word of mouth is quite mixed though on the positive side. The friend I saw the film with hated it and immediately posted a negative report on his FB page. I found it an okay watch but lower than my expectations. And I think the majority felt like me. I am yet to meet a person who said that BB was a fantastic film. It is more like ‘nice one-time watch film’.

may be in the north india dabangg and RR might have got extremely +ve wom ,but to me what 3 idiots has achieved in the recent years cannot be surpassed by this kinda masala movies..

as for BB i think this “theek thak ” , “one time watch ” kinda wom was more and hence it trended well despite competetion..

Tony, What I’m saying is that BB has trended reasonably well but not as good as Rohit Shetty’s earlier films. Golmaal 3 did more than 3 times its opening weekend and that too a pretty big opening weekend.

shalu, atleast try responding to the point superstar sam made with a genuine one rather than a dismissive one..
hf2 and bb trending shows how important competition is to trending of a film..bb trended better in first week but went below hf2 in second week all due to competition..cocktail has taken of atleast 10-15 crores of bb

@tony-as much as i dread watching abhisek on the big screen i was pleasantly surprised by his performance..he was very good..and about the film here in london its the first time since no entry and ready that i have seen ppl laughing all through out the movie..ajay abhisek and abhiseks pal were all hilarious..so much for multiplex audience not liking masala movies :D

  19. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

dennycrane1, I didn’t respond to Superstar sam’s point because we have already discussed this many times.

First of all, his calculations are wrong. The weekdays vs weekend fall of the two movies isn’t 65% and 50% —- it is 67% and 62%.

I maintain that a liked film trends well in the longer run and keeps earning for more number of weeks. Most multiplex heavy films don’t fall much on the first Monday but come down gradually – like Rockstar and Cocktail. The Single screen heavy films show a faster fall.

At the end of the day, HF2 and BB had almost similar trending with HF2 being just 0.1 more than BB.

  20. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 0

Shalu, Bol Bachchan did have positive WOM because 2.6 trending is not bad seeing that it had strong competition every week!

Bol Bachchan made 23cr in first weekdays after 38cr weekend and HF2 did 20cr in first weekdays after 42cr weekend and still has better trending than Bol Bachchan. Doesn’t that indicate something?

Cocktail’s opening was fabulous and it had huge affect on Bol Bachchan. There was no reason for Bol Bachchan to end in between 95-100, when it could have been easily between 105-110 had Cocktail released two weeks later.

  21. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 2

Sanket, I’m tired of explaining the same thing again and again! Where have I said that BB’s WOM is negative?!

BB fell 62% in the weekdays and HF2 fell 67% in the weekdays – is this a great difference?

EVEN IF BB HAD MANAGED TO DO 105 CR. WITHOUT COMPETITION FROM COCKTAIL, THE TRENDING WOULD STILL HAVE BEEN 2.7 INSTEAD OF 2.6. IT WOULD NOT HAVE BECOME 3.

Like I have said again and again, competition hardly affects a liked movie for 0.1-o.2 points.

And BB only had competition in multiplexes – in single screens it had 3 OPEN WEEKS.

  22. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Shalu, you have commented without even knowing what point I was trying to make!

I am not saying That BB’s verdict in your books should change. All I am saying is that BB got affected in second week is clearly seen. HF2′s case should be taken. And that 62% and 67%..yes its a difference…because in Final tally, HF2 went ahead by bigger margin than BB despite BB and HF2 had very similar first week (1cr difference).

Lets take your point. You say that 2.6 or 2.7 trending doesn’t really make difference. But then BB is collecting at-least 15cr less than HF2 despite of having very similar first week (where BB trended better than HF2). Why this difference?

And when did I say that you said BB had negative WOM? But you said that BB had mixed WOM, which is not true IMO. The trending shows!

  23. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Sanket, BB was always going to collect less than HF2, even with similar trending – because its opening weekend was 4.5 cr less than HF2.

If a 5% difference in the in the weekday collection of the two movies, makes you think that BB had better WOM, then there is nothing I have to say to that.

In the final tally BB fell short of HF2 – only by 0.1 point – and I don’t think that is going to make a huge difference to the verdict of both movies.

‘The trending shows!” Yes it does! The trending showed that both HF2 and BB trended almost similarly – HF2 with 2 open weeks all over and BB with 1 open week in multiplexes and 3 open weeks in single screens.

  24. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Shalu, while in Weekdays BB was going better than HF2 despite of having lesser weekend, then why so much difference in second week of both films? HF2 had 9cr more than BB in second week.

    Any specific reason?

  25. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

What can be the ‘specific’ reason for a 5% difference in the weekdays? HF2 was always going to have a bigger 2nd week that BB with similar WOM because its opening was bigger.

If you are hell bent on proving that Cocktail made a dent on BB, so be it – maybe it did make a 5 cr dent – but the fact remains that if BB’s WOM was better it would have done Hit or even Superhit trending despite the competition from Cocktail. The trending shows! And in BB’s case it showed that it was MODERATELY liked – and that is it. Even two open weeks would not have given it a Hit trending.

  26. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Shalu, why are you considering the first weekend numbers for comparing second weekend of both films?

If weekend plays such important role then what is the use of WOM?

Bol Bachchan was trending better in weekdays and then sudden drop in second week (HF2 in comparison). First two weeks of Hf2 and BB was almost similar. BB lacked by 2%only. And the second week of BB lacked by 25% of HF2. There you see the difference.

Its pretty much clear Cocktail brought dent in BB’s business. That might not really have changed the verdict in your books, but the point was to tell that Big films get affected by another big film. Look at KSKHH. It had just 5.5cr weekend despite of remaining decent in weekdays!

  27. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    Sanket,

“why are you considering the first weekend numbers for comparing second weekend of both films?”

Because my whole theory is based on weekend numbers! A film grows from the weekend and with similar trending a bigger opener will earn more than a smaller opener!

Competition did affect BB’s second weekend but to a very small extent. If BB had been liked more, that shortfall would have been made up in the longer run.

EMAET had 3 open weeks (only competition was Ek Deewana Tha and it had a disaster opening). It still could not double its opening weekend. Lack of competition did not give it a better trending – even if it had competition in the second week it would have wrapped up around 1.7-1.8 instead of 2.

A LIKED film makes up for the money lost by competition with a longer and steady run. And I stand by my claim that competition affects a film’s collections only by 0.1-0.2 at the most. A few crore here and there do not really change a film’s true verdict.

KSKHH was NOT steady in weekdays. It fell quite heavily on Monday itself compared to Friday. I knew then that its trending would be below-average to average at best.

  28. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

To say competition from a big movie doesnt play a role in collections of a movie is laughable.. Obvious a liked film would be less affected comparitively then a mixed or bad wom film… But to say there is no effect is laugh worthy..or it could be just an excuse to make ones theory flawless.. Bb’s second week undoubtdly would have been bigger if cocktail had not released…

  29. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Kunal, Yes BB’s second week would have been bigger if Cocktail had not released. But it could have made up for the shortfall by a longer and steadier run – maybe not all but a significant number.

And when did I say that competition doesn’t play any role at all in a film’s collection? It does but it plays a very small role – hardly a few crores – which doesn’t really change the trending score much.

  30. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Shalu, yes the trending theory is based on weekend. But not second weekend. Just because first weekend of HF2 was better than BB, that doesn’t mean in second weekend also HF2 should have better second weekend and that when BB’s weekdays were more steadier than HF2.

And you are saying it affects only by 0.1 or 0.2..well, that depends on the kind of film it is. And suppose if Desi Boyz would have released in very next week of rockstar. Than Rockstar would have made say 62cr which is exactly double of its weekend. Then it would have changed the verdict from Average to below average.

Anyways, I am out of this topic. I remember you once said that A film will do what it wants to irrespective of what competition it has to suffer! Its good that you think BB’s collections are effected then how does that matter if its only 5crs! :D

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Sanket, I don’t agree with your first point.

Below-Average, Average etc. are all measures of to which degree a film was rejected. Anything below Above Average is a rejected film. Rockstar would indeed have come under the Below-Average catetgory if it had made even 3 cr less. Even at Average it is a rejected film.

Yes, adding 5 cr. to BB’s collection will make no difference. Its trending will still remain Semi-Hit.

  31. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

And for God sake don’t even take Tezz as competition which released on such a huge size and had just 3.5cr on first day and that too much of it came from single screens.

VD almost retained 90% of its shows in multiplexes although Avengers released. HF2 was having very less shows (in-fact it was out of few oplexes) because it was its fourth week then.

The effect of competition works differently on small films and big films… Small films if liked immensely can sustain against competition simply because they are not accepted to collected huge anyways no matter how much good they are… So what we call sustainance in their case may bit be good for a big movie… For eg a small movie cab collect 15-20 crore in its entire run after its frst week easily if liked against competitionand it would be called good and one can say it sustained and did well simply because how much of how much we accept them to earn.. But a big movie if liked should do 32 crore atleast in its second week itself to be labelled as moderatley accepted… And with big competition back to back…its extremely difficult…

    @shalu

Yes it leads to longer sustainence.. But if there are back to back releases in multiple weeks…hardly there is any chance or longer run… Had bb not faced conmpetition…it would have done what g3 did easily…

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 3 Thumb down 2

      Good observation Kunal.

But i would like to add here even big movies can sustain with competition if well received. Problem is big movies are not fulfilling expectations. Most of time they are half decent attempt. Why exhibitor cut the screenings to half in second week with new release if movie was doing fine ? Simply because they are expecting that target audience can accommodate comfortably within that much screenings, there is no point of extra shows. Same is case with single screens, if movie is doing well they will not replace it with new release until occupancy go down to a certain level.

My point is if biggies like Three idiots, Dabangg can sustain well .. despite new releases coming their way .. then why not others ? Simple .. because rest were not that much appreciated. And i would like to add once again .. Market potential of movie releasing on 3500 prints is around 290 Crore in one week itself. And i am sure a movie will come very shortly which will correct 200+ Crore in a week other than opening week, on that day we will realize that we were celebrating under-performers previously (And i am not sating life time, just one week collections).

    Well said Yakuza!

Kunal, It is a misconception that it is easy for small movies to trend well. It is actually more difficult for them as they have to be really good to sustain in cinemas the next week – else their screen space is given to a big film next week.

Cinema owners cut down the shows of films in their second weeks depending on the kind of audience they are getting. If a small film does not get audience, it is taken off the very next week. If a big film does not get audience, it is still given screen space because a even a rejected big film will keep getting some audience in the second week.

  43. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Yakuza- “Why exhibitor cut the screenings to half in second week with new release if movie was doing fine ? Simply because they are expecting that target audience can accommodate comfortably within that much screenings, there is no point of extra shows”.

Yakuza Bol Bachchan had 12 shows in first week and in later week there were just 5 shows and all 5 shows were booked a day before. I went to cocktail and saw that BB audience purchasing Cocktail’s ticket whose show was one hour later.

Same case GOW 1..TASM was released with huge amount of shows..and GOW left with just 3-4 shows in multiplexes and with houseful boards. If you visit multiplexes on weekend almost all liked films are houseful.

    Just a point.

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 1

Sanket what you are saying is absolutely true. But let me give you little idea how program manager of every multiplex schedule the shows :

      1. Suppose there are total 3 movies(A, B, C) to be scheduled. One new movie(C) and two past releases(A,B).

      2. Suppose there are three auditorium with 400 capacity each and 4 shows a day. So total 12 shows and 4800 per day audience capacity.

      3. Do some maths to judge the expected audience may come for each movie. This is based on recent past releases.

      4. Suppose expected audience for past releases i.e. A and B is 500 and 800 respectively (based on performance of their past week). And new release(C) is expected to fetch 1200 audience in a day.

      5. This comes to ratio 5:8:12.

      6. 12 shows will be divided into this ratio in absolute terms.

      7. This will come to 3 shows for A. 4 Shows for B and 6 shows for C. Now in absolute terms we have one extra show allocated. As expected audience(500) for movie A can easily accommodate in two shows only, one extra show for A will be removed.

      8. Now suppose if new movie was not be released .. in that case 12 shows for movie A and B would divided into 5:8. This will give then 4 and 8 shows respectively .. i.e. double of previously allocated. But does this give them more audience .. NO and YES.. “No” because audience will almost be same but only result in lower occupancy level. And “YES” .. because both movies might gain some additional arbitrary audience which might have lose in case of new release. But overall gain/loss is not more than 5-10% and that too covered by better trending if movie is really liked.

      9. In case of single screen, exhibitor will either retain the movie or replace it. That solely depends on performance of past week.

Shalu the thing is for an exceptional movie… Or an immensely liked movie… Its a diff thing oltogether… But today hardly there are any immensely liked movies… Competition is a deterrent…a big one.. In movies like bb..which are moderately liked.. Once there is a conpetition…the human nature comes into play in the sense that if a group of college going folks wanted to see bb nd postponed it till next week… So once concktail releases…they could say..”chal yaar cocktail dekh lete hain”… Had cocktail not released..bb wuld hve definately collected 30 crores in second week instead of 23… Also number of shows gets decreased considerably…

Nd fr smaller movies is is easier to sustain simply because the amount they need to collect to be labelled as success or accepted is less… And also they are mainly targeted at multiplexes…nd hence there are always some shows in multiplexes nd tht are enough for the amount of audience it gonna attract!

Kunal, I’m talking about trending here, not a film being labeled hit or flop by the trade. Both big films and small films face competition and in both cases it is survival of the fittest.

The college crowd you are talking about watch BB on its first weekend and Cocktail on its first weekend. When this crowd goes out and gives good/bad report of the films, they trend accordingly.

Vicky Donor and GOW are small films of similar target audience and similar competition – yet VD did more than 5 times its opening weekend (8 cr) and GOW did about 2.8 times its opening weekend (10 cr). Both have been liked but the difference in the liking is in their trending.

A similar example for big movies is 3 Idiots and Dabangg. 3 Idiots earned 5 times its opening weekend while Dabangg earned 2.8 times its opening weekend. Again both were liked but the difference in the liking is in their trending.
