danishHot debate. What do you think?
4
4i have always believed that the media selectively picks up facts that suit its narrative and ignore the ones that dont. and this the narrative is decided on the basis of both commercial interests (paid stories/ PR drive) and just simple dramatic potential (the rise and fall of rajesh khanna, the bachchan legend, the self made baadhshah of bollywood etc etc.)
it is very obvious that between 1980 and 1984 jeetendra was much ahead of amitabh bachchan ( by the way u have forgotten to include 1979′s jaani dushman which was a multiostarrer and just for the sake of ‘economy’ many actors were given ‘special appearence’/ jeetendra had two songs in the film and was the hero in the 1st half.) and aftyer 1984 bachchan was on a downslide anyways. the way media has ignored a dramatic story – “jeetendra beats bachchan at the turnstiles” – is criminal.

1Same south remakes, similar sudden & unexpected boom in career……Salman’s career resembles Jeetu’s career graph.
Oh…& how can one forget the striking similarity when it comes to lack of acting abilities.

We can answer you logically by asking did Jeetendra had 3 ATBB’s before this sudden and unexpected boom? NO
But then there is no way we can explain things logically to RANTERS.
So we choose to reply you like this ….Keep ranting … you have nthg else to do in life but sit and CRY … you cry baby.

0Interesting. Was Farz aur Kanoon really a blockbuster?
If I remember correctly, it was with Himmatwala in 1983 that Jeetendra really came into his own. But his South remakes success mantra fizzled out in a couple of years.
That was the time of the rise of Mithun Chakraborty, Anil Kapoor and a little later Sunny Deol and Govinda.

Unlike Jitendra, None of his movie was Heroine oriented .. and he was main driving force with his towering presence behind success of every movie. More than boxoffice .. His iconic roles in movies like Lawaaris, Naseeb, Kaalia, Coolie, Satte Pe Satta and Namak Halaal .. had ever lasting impact on bollywood.

0@yakuza – but jeetendra is almost double. and includes blockbusters.
and most of bachcahn movies were two-three hero projects that takes away more credit than sharing it with one single heroine.
for instance u cud say ppl came to watch asha becoz of jeetendra not reena roy as heros drag ppl to theaters but u cant say no one came to watch naseeb for shatrughan sinha and rishi kapoor.
baaki icoinc roles ki to koi scientific definition hai nahin.
i mean i am not such a big ‘LOL’ fan but i feel like saying it wen i read u say kaalia, naseeb and coolie are icoinc. coolie was much more cheap, mysoginyst masala than the worst salman film (shadi karke phans gaya yaar) the only thing that added some value to coolie was theme of social justice in a sub plot. rest was chepast masala possible. mard was off course worse.
@ragingbull – but the post doesnt insult u personally, does it?
or u mean mine or rockys comment?
and kindly name 3 atbb’s of jeetu before that phase.

Amitabh had 22 success and Jitendra had 14 ..
Amitabh had 3 Super Duper Hits And Jitendra had only 1(That too low grosser).
And yes .. every one can felt what Iconic roles and performances were .. there is no definition require for this.

Those success of jitendra were of small magnitude. His blockbusters were also much smaller grosser than big b’s average.
Even emraan hashmi had two blockbusters last year, one in heroine oriented movie tdp and another on his own murder2.
But can u compare emraan’s these successes with sallu’s successes like bg and ready last year?
Roiwise, emraan hashmi might stand a bigger star or equal to salman in a small period of time but there is huge gap in bo grosses and impact. -

0@yakuza – the magnitude was in proportion to their budgets. and u have put all the releases of bachchan as successes. bemisaal, nastik, mahaan pukaar etc were clear flops.
the biggest hits of many years belonged to jeetu. even himmat wala vs coolie is debatable. many insist himmatwaala was bigger (definitely by shalu didi’s trending theoru himmatwalala was much bigger. but shalu did applies her theory on the basis of brand positioning and hence wont give jeetendra the advantage)

0Verdicts are from Trade guide … Mahaan, Pukaar etc all recovered cost and even earned commission .. otherwise Jitendra’s Jeo aur jine do, Dharamkanta were also bigger flops. More details here …
http://bollybusiness.wordpress.....ade-guide/
And do you know budget of every movie ? yes .. Amitabh movies distribution prices were bigger because he was biggest superstar. But even grosses were much bigger .. and only magnitude of business decides who is bigger.
And also consider the density and volume of Amitabh releases ..
Namak Halaal and Desh Premi released in one week gap.
Shaan, Ram Balram and Dostana all released in one month gap to each other.
Similarly see the 9 releases in 1982 … which star in history of bollywood had 9 movies released in same year ??? Clearly you can imagine the overlaps of movies.

0I am amused at these arguments. I am als amzed how people dont realise it si not box office alone that determines star status. If it was so Rajendra Kumar Dharmendra and Jettendra would have been as bis stars as Dlip Kumar, Rajesh Khanna or Amitabh Bachchan. But they are not. Everyone knows it. Any amount of ranting on NG will not change that. Stardom is not decided by accountants.

Precisely my point. No one goes to Trade Guides to check collection figures. People judge a star by the films one leaves behind. And no one gives a damn fora film like Farz aur Kanoon even if some earnest bookkeeper write Blockbuster next to it. These tags have no meaning in the collective consciousness of filmgoers.
Films like Deewar,Zanjeer, Don, Amar Akbar Anthony, Naseeb, Muqadar Ka Sikandar, Sholay or Aanand and Aradhana, or Golmaal and Bawarchi are iconic films. Never mind the box office. films like Aasaha, Fraz, Farz aur Kanoon are not.

0@yakuza – of the 9 films in 1982 only namak halal and khuddar were hits. and then u talk of hit ratio of salman khan.
anyways no one is saying (at least me) that jeetendra was more succesful than amitabh. my point is media chooses to ignore some things and exaggerate other to suit its narrative, the same point i raised in the rajesh khanna post.
otherwise amitabh, dilip kumar and salman khan definitely tie up for the top spot in 100 years history of bollywood. at least till this year’s end.
@utkal – no one knows it. only u know that dharmendra was smaller than rajesh khanna!
rejendra kumar, jeetendra are as big stars as rajesh khanna (bigger on some sacles) dharmendra is even bigger. if he (they) are not bigger than amitabh and dilip kumar, its becoz of the fact they have lesser hits than amitabh and dilip, of smaller magnitude and less footfall.
apart from boxoffice there is no way to determine bigger/smaller star. yes u can make a list of ur own favourites where dharmendra is lower than rajesh khanna but that is wat wud actually qualify as ‘ranting on ng”.
and as iconic as naseeb is, most kids of today’s generation have not even heard about it. and every 18 years will tell u the scene by scene story of jaani dushman. its all about how frequently a film is telecast on tv.
take for instance laawaris, one of the bigger amitabh bachchan hit, at par with don, if not bigger. but ppl remeber don. the reamke, the media projection are the reason and so also televison telecast. may be praksah mehra’s family has not been able to starike many deals with tv channels and hence the amitabh films he made are rarely telecast (lawaris, khoon pasina, hera pheri, even the atbb muqaddar ka sikandar) does that mean mks was less of a classic than don?
come on. dont mix media/tv projections with ‘memorable’.
and how do u count the ppl who consider deewar a classic and not janai dushman? wat is the collective trp of jaani dushman over the last 5 years and deewar?
now go compare.
as soon as some channel strikes deals with j om praksah’s company, asha will be telecast as much and become as memorable. by the way how memorable is dostana, released in the same year as asha?

0@yakuza – my definition of bigger neednot be same as the author of this post or urs for that matter. i am calling jeetendra bigger than amitabh on the basis of the fact that while amitabh gave big budget turkeys like shaan, great gambler, barsaat ki ek raat etc, jeetendra gave big ROI hits. overall jeetendra can never be bigger than amitabh but wasnt
aasha (10 cr) bigger than dostana (9 cr)
meri awaaz suno (13 cr) bigger than laawaris (12 cr)
farz aur kanoon and himmatwal bigger on ROi thannamak halaal and coolie?
tohfa and maqsad (9cr) bigger than sharbi (8 cr)
now if amitabh does 20 films a year he may have some averages etc. even jeetendra’s less successful films like jeene doa nd dharmkanta were average. but who was on the top? who was above? who was below in the lsist.
