its a really mindboggling run rajesh khanna had.i guess he ruled till 1975.but then the socioeconomic nd political situation was such that audience found a man who stood against the system,a man who represented them amitabh bachchan.khanna was just 35 i then when he lost his superstardom nd bib b took over.if it were not for big b,rk would have ruled for more longer.this is what i ve heard.if anyone here knows the exact story kindly correct me.

And don’t forget these semi hits are much bigger hit than made up blockbusters of today. Daag and Roti was his last riots as Super star.

I am fortunate to witness his super stardom !! I could see the craze for him during his days which cannot be imagined by today’s superstars.P

    After Araadhna, Anand was ultimate.

Dr. Nick – Actually AB started taking over from him with Namak Haram. It is because of interference in the scripts and ego which took away his stardom. Namak Haram script was changed as per him and the climax as well where AB was to die in the end but RK got it changed and down fall started as all the big and good directors started moving away from him.

Since u asked I gave one of the reasons or else today only positive about him as he is the ONLY SUPERSTAR of BW or u can say the word super star was created for him and is over after him. P

    Very sad !!!!

Once again…………. May Almighty Rest his soul in Peace in Paradise.

Woww Alfa.one .. you are so lucky. But seeing his movies and songs from those time, its not hard for any one to guess his unprecedented craze. Since yesterday i am listening his songs only .. and goddd, any one who have such a treasure of classics to his name can be extreme proud. Even 1981 release Kudrat has classics tunes and lyrics. Kaka was truly blessed, his killing smile has no match.

@Yakuza – u r absolutely right. Even a thriller “The train” was running to packed houses for weeks together and so dashing was RK in that movie, better not to compare today’s …………!!!!

The movies mentioned above by Doga ji …….ohhhhhhhhhhhhh…….. better not to comment coz difficult to find the words to define the craze and success for those films !!

How come was the semi hit of that era bigger than blockbuster of today? There seems to be no logic in this.I am not taking away anything from Rajesh Khanna here as delivering 11-13 hits in just three years is a record which can not be even touched in present time. These wrong explanations are given only to protect big b as he has no solo blockbuster in his entire career.

  8. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

@yakuza@alfa – no one here is questioning rajesh khanna’s achievments but that doesnt mean u undermine the achivemenst of today’s stars. they are a very professional lot, respect scripts and directors, and even technicians, and some of them (at least count 6) have lasted for over 20 years at the top.

so get out of nostalgia mode. budhaape ki nishaani hai ye.

  9. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

15 hits in a row! I don’t think any other actor has such a record to his credit.

The word Superstar is used for every other actor nowadays but the fact remains that there have been only two Superstars in bollywood till date – Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan. When they ruled, they ruled alone. They alone were equal to the of the film industry.

There was a time when Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor and Dev Anand ruled together and the last two decades the 3 Khans have ruled together. But they are not Superstars.

Superstar bas ekk hi hota hai. Uska koi competition nahi hota.

If Salman Khan can get Blockbusters in both ETT and Dabangg 2 he will echo back a level of Success at-least not seen since Amitabh Bachchan…

5 Blockbusters back to back in 3 years, along with top grossing movies of 3 years in running…

Not talking whole career wise, but in a compressed time space of few years….

Its true Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan records are great, but we cant look down on performance of top 5 stars of last 20 years, especially looking at the NON-Performance of the 4-5 Lallu stars who have come after them(except Hrithik).

  12. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Doga, I don’t think so. SRK and Aamir, even Akshay and Ajay are giving 100 cr grossers with every release. Salman is doing extraordinarily well the last two years but the others are not doing bad either. They are still competition.

Also there was a time in the mid-2000s were SRK was giving back to back hits (many of which will be 100 cr movies today inflation adjusted). But he also never reached the level of Superstar because the others were always at his heels.

The Superstardom of Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan had no such competition. The other ‘big’ stars were too small compared to them.

If there is anybody who is a Superstar today in the real sense of the word, it is Rajnikant but his appeal is not pan-India.

  13. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Rajesh Khanna was a true blue superstar. But it was shortlived. Though any fans he made during that period, have lasted for eternity.

The “superstar” effect then was magnified because there was a lot of exclusivity, fewer public apperances, hardly any media interactions except a few random ones, everything around a superstar had some sort of mystique associated. Which is why when their movies released, they ran endlessly, because that was the only time, the fans would get to cherish their superstar’s presence.
For that matter even Rajendra Kumar was named Jubilee Kumar because he gave consistent hits that went on to celebrate silver jubilees. He was a superstar in his own right too. Just that his stardom was not that hyped as Rajesh Khanna’s.

P.S. Before somebody thinks i am being insensitive, let me inform I am not taking anything away from Rajesh Khanna’s achievements.

@Doga .. i am putting simple question to you.

Do you think a movie as much liked as Bodyguard starring top star of its time, say Amitabh, released in 1978 .. could have ben Blockbuster at that time (Record opening was given) ?

Yakuza,Shalu, i dont have any problem in agreeing Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh Bachchan are only superstars.

That will mean Khans etc are just some big stars.

But then we just need to coin a new term for Ranbir, Shahid, Imran, Ranveer , Emraan etc.(at the rate they are going only 1 out of them may match anyone Khan or may be not even that).

BTW , What a track record of Rajesh Khanna . Great !

Still, the poularity, love, affection for Rajesh Khanna by nation was heavy on his BO tack rcord. That’s what make him above and large than Big stars like Rajendra Kumar, Sunil Dutt and Dharmendra.

Here is list of Amitabh Bachchan…

    Amitabh Bachchan’s Golden Run – 1973-88

There might be an never-ending debate on how perhaps the Movie business has changed in the last 30 odd years. Actors are doing increasingly lesser movies(though this trend started in the 2000?s only),increase in other mediums of entertainment, and so on.

On the other hand there have been booms too for the industry with Music(in 90?s) , Sattellite/Cable(2000?s) providing a very good avenue for Movie Revenue thus helping a lot in the movie’s recovery.

Also can be said that modes of promotions has also increased by leaps and bounds.

But leaving the above behind, and going movie to movie, Amitabh Bachchan hit an extreme purple patch for almost 15-16 years between 1973-88.

The Innings is interesting for the amount of movies done and the success rate achieved.

Infact of the 63 movies Bachchan did in that period only 7 movies faced monetary losses of any kinds, thus a loss making movie used to an Event for Amitabh Bachchan.

Also, Amitabh Bachchan had atleast 1 hit a year for 14 straight years(1973-86).

Take a look. * Verdicts Based on Film Information Trade Journal, probably the most strict system of Verdict out there.

For Fairness purpose its important to highlight the not so successfull periods of Bachchan’s Career.

    1969-72

This Period is the start of the Career of Big B, he mostly struggled around for few years before breaking big time in Zanjeer. The notable movies of this time are Saat Hindustani, Anand and Bombay to Goa.

    1 Saat Hindustani 1969 – Flop
    2 Anand 1970 – AA
    3 Reshma Aur Shera 1971 – Flop

    8 Ek Nazar 1972 – Flop
    9 Sanjog 1972 – Flop
    10 Raaste Ka Pathar 1972 – Flop

    1989-92

This Period Signifies the return of Big B from the political Arena back to movie business, again here he didnt find the same success as he did in this prime. Notable movies are Agneepath,Hum and Aaj Ka Arjun.

    1 Toofan 1989 – B
    2 Jaadugar 1989 – Flop
    3 Main Azaad Hoon 1989 – Flop
    4 Agneepath 1990 – B
    5 Aaj Ka Arjun 1990 7,00,00,000 AA*
    6 Hum 1991 8,00,00,000 AA*
    7 Ajooba 1991 – Flop
    8 Indrajeet 1991 – Flop
    9 Akayla 1991 – Flop
    10 Khuda Gawah 1992 – B
    11 Insaaniyat 1994 – B

Since 1997 Amitabh Bachchan has starred and been successfull in uncountable number of movies, though most have been in character role capacity thus cant be counted(in this context that is), though he has again had Pivotal roles in movies like Paa,Black,Cheeni Kum and Khakee but such movies wont be 10% of his movies since 2000 and definitely dont echo back at the glorious run of 1973-88.

Doga, There was a time when Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor ruled bollywood – but the term Superstar was coined only for Rajesh Khanna. Such was his impact. After him Amitabh earned this tag – because he too had no competition till the time he ruled.

The same way the 3 Khans are ruling bollywood together for the last 20 years – no mean feat – but none of them have seen the kind of total adoration of the audience like Rajesh Khanna and Amitabh. The audience has always been divided between them. They are much loved, yes but not the ONLY loved. Today only Rajnikant is a Superstar because nobody else comes even close.

  26. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Doga, As for the new actors – they are just stars – they shine bright one year and then dull the next year. None of them have even earned acceptability in the interiors (except Hrithik to an extent). These media-created ‘superstars’ have a long way to go before they can even touch the stature of the Khans, forget RK and AB.

    1. Aamir Khan

    3. Shahrukh Khan

What was Dharmendra BO record during Amithab’s golden run period.
Just curious because some one mentioned that during his time only he was loved thats why he is super star.
And, for that matter, what was Bo record of Jeetendra also during the same period.

  33. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

In my personal opinion, Amitabh is the biggest superstar India has ever seen. Bigger than Rajesh Khanna or Rajnikant.

And no this is not an effort to compel Yakuza to speak good about Salman :D :P

Rajesh, Dharmendra’s record was pretty good but much less than the Amitabh Bachchan wave. It was not like other actor’s films did not do well during that period but AB was too much ahead with his hits as well has his personal appeal – people loved that voice, the height, the whole personality of the angry young man. Other angry young men were shadows of the original.

Jeetendra’s true stardom started in the early 80s with remakes of south films. Before that he did moderately well as the Jumping Jack.

This is more of a perception than reality that during Amithab’s golden run period, other stars were miniscules.
I myself consider Amithab biggest superstar India have ever seen, but, I dont undermine other stars achievements in wake of Amithab’s track record which truely was phenomal.
But, during that period, Dharmandra was not far behind (Who was main lead in Sholay, Chupke Chupke and Ram Balram, well ram Balram was a level case). Jeetendra’s track record was also very good during 80s. Vinod Khanna was also supposed to challange Amithab before he left film industry for Osho.

  39. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Doga, Shahid Ranbir Ranvir are better actors than the Khans were when they started. It is good that they like to experiment too. But they don’t have an audience outside the metros till date. Shahid’s Vivah did well in the interiors because of Sooraj Barjatya and Ranbir’s Rajneeti and APKGK were helped by Katrina and other bigger actors.

As of now they are too ‘baba-log’ for the audience in tier 2 and tier 3 cities to take to them. Shahid and Ranvir Singh can break into the masala genre with the right films but Ranbir and Imran’s appeal is still too city-centric. Anyway, they are too much in the shadow of the Khans, Akshay and Hrithik right now to even think of superstardom in the next 5 years at least.

here I will agree with Rajesh, IF AB wouldnt had made a comback after 2000′s (As his comeback is historic and make him real big superstar) then he wouldnt have been given so much importance

by so much importance means people would have thought twice before calling Amitabh bigger than Dilip Kumar & Rajesh Khanna

  42. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Rajesh, Jeetendra track record was good only in the 80s when AB had started falling but still giving the biggest hits. Vinod Khanna was never a threat to AB – he played second lead to AB in the films they did together – Muqaddar Ka Sikandar, Parvarish, Hera Pheri, Amar Akbar Anthony (VK had the shortest role among the three).

Dharmendra was the main lead in Chupke Chupke yes, but Sholay and Ram Balram were equal importance roles. Actually Dharmendra had a separate track going with his hit pairing with Hema Malini – he even played supporting roles to her in films like Seeta Aur Geeta. Also unlike Rajesh Khanna, he was intelligent enough to understand the shift in audience tastes and made an easy transition from Naram-Dharam to Garam-Dharam in the wake of AB’s angry young man wave.

@shaludidi – media ke jaal mein phansi hui ho. there was no dilip -dev-raj trinity. media created it. dev anand was far far behind dilip kumar and raj kapoor was hardly successful as an actor he was more successfull as adirector. aparet from his own films i can only think of 4 (chhaliya, aandi, chori chori and aah) as raj kapoors hit films.

that way we can say amitabh bachchan-dharmendra and jeetendra were a trinity. infact dharmendra’s record may turnout bigger than dev annad and jeetendra defitely would have more hits than raj kapoor (as an actor)

simlarly though salman and sharukh were neck to neck till recently, aamir was never in the trinity. so stop parroting false media stories.

and didi who coined the word ‘superstar’? media? who are they to coin it? what basis? wat data? kaale angrezon ke ghulaam jaag jaao. wen u say media what u mena is just what toi/filmfare/madhuri group said.

and finally @shalu@doga@yakuza_ amitabh bachchan ki solo hero attbb batao.

    @ Shalu,
Shahid Ranbir Ranvir are better actors than the Khans were when they started. It is good that they like to experiment too

I dont agree to the extent of 2 Khans Shahrukh & Aamir.

Shahrukh chamatkar, Deewana, RBGM performances were ordinary. Even it would be strange for many that for me in Baazigar & Darr Srk’s character was more impressive then Acting skills. But if I will consider KHKN Anjaam and so on , Then Srk acting was great and had a level where Ranveer,Ranbir & Shahid have not reached.

And for Aamir till HHRPK in all of his movies he had average performance(JJWS & Raakh are exceptions ) but with AAA and going forward all of his performances are masterpieces till today, the level of which these 3 new stars can’t think till now.

And remember Shahid has already 8 years, Ranbir 5 years in Industry. So your meaning to say ” When started ” means to me like first 5-6 years.

VED-Z, I never found any of the Khans good actors. Always found Aamir over-rated, SRK charismatic but hamming, and Salman poor actor with loads of charm.

My personal opinion – but for me Shahid’s performance in JWM and Kaminey is far better than what the Khans did in the first 5-6 years of their careers. Don’t like Ranbir much but he was too good in Wake Up Sid. Ranvir is a powerhouse of talent and he will prove that with every new film of his.

Danish Boxoffice ke ilaawa bhi kai cheeze hoti hainJaise ki popularity.

And before Mid 90′s there was no word called as ATBB. The biggest verdict was Superhit or Megahit . And know pick all superhits of Amitabh so that next time you dont need to ask this Q. of ATBB again.

VED-Z, I have always found Shahid competent in all his films. As for Chup Chup Ke, for me Rajpal Yadav owned that film.

salman khans performance in inital films MPK Saajan HAHK veergati karan arjun baaghi AAA khamoshi were WAY WAY BETTER than any of the this new generation actors.

also he stood out in every genre of the cinema in inital years of his career.action karan arjun veergati bhaghi comedy AAA romance mpk saajn family drama HAHK offbeat film khamoshi

While superstars of today like hrithik dont even have a single memorable performance in comedy or ranbir has not even attempted any action film till now..

honestly new stars are not even a patch to khans when they started their career.

shalu just likes new stars like shahid and ranveer and giving her personal opinon which is totally false.

Yes it belonged to Rajpal Yadav to a great extent, but still Shahid acting skills were very good wether he was their for 50 minutes in front of camera or just 5 minutes in whole movie
