An initiative Salman has associated with gets atremendous response
An initiative seeking “The Greatest Indian” through popular opinion was flagged off bySalman Khan
and History TV18 in February this year, inviting the common man to select that one person they think deserves the title. BesidesMahatma Gandhi
, of course! Voting opened on June 4 with the announcement of top 50 nominees. Over one crore votes have been polled so far, driven by social media.
Based on popular vote, market research and a jury, 10 personalities have now been shortlisted – BR Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Sachin Tendulkar, Vallabhbhai Patel, JRD Tata, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, AP J Abdul Kalam and Lata Mangeshkar.
One of the biggest surprises the popular vote has thrown up is the absence of prominent personalities like Amitabh Bachchan, AR Rahman and Kapil Dev from the list.
Voting lines continue to be open and “The Greatest Indian” will be revealed in the second week of August in a grand finale to be telecast on the channel. Says Salman, “The channel has always been about history being made everyday by ordinary people. What better proof of this than the response that the initiative has received?”
