‘Gangs Of Wasseypur’: Anurag defends the movie’s budget

Riding high on the success of Gangs of Wasseypur, maverick filmmaker Anurag Kashyap remarked that audience doesn’t understand films. Kashyap recently remarked that India is suffering because the audience here do not endorse the good cinema.

“People say that we do not make enough good movies. But, I want to ask, who endorses such cinema when they do get made? Audience do not understand the pains we filmmakers take to bring a good story to screen but it is very easy to complain,” he said in an earlier interview.

Interestingly, Anurag had also come in the line of fire when it was reported that the budget of the film was Rs 45 crores. He cleared the air on Twitter: “To Clear all misconceptions about the budget of Gangs of Wasseypur. The cost of the 2 parts together is 18.40 crore which makes one film at 9.20 crore.” He further tweeted: “45 crore as reported in the media is false.”

Set in authentic back drop of Wasseypur, a small town near Dhanbad is a tale of revenge that runs deep within families. It is in universal in theme, is a tale of revenge, crime, family and love. In fact the format of Gangs of Wasseypur is so universal that it cuts across all kinds of audience like an epic Mahabharat or Ramayan would.

Anurag made two movies in 18.40 crore…Abhinav Kashyap should lend him some money.

What rubbish! How can the budget be 9.2 cr per movie? GOW has been promoted so aggressively – the whole team went to Cannes for Gods sake!

And what is this crap about Indian audience not understanding good cinema? Who made Kahaani, Paan Singh Tomar, Vicky Donor such big successes?

He should be thankful that the audience has accepted his film well enough to enable the second part’s theatrical release – which would not have happened if GOW had folded up like Shanghai.

Shalu: ” How can the budget be 9.2 cr per movie? GOW has been promoted so aggressively – the whole team went to Cannes for Gods sake!”

That is the production budget. Next, how much does ot cost for team of say 19 to go to Cannes and spend 3 days? ( 50 lakhs? 1 cr? waht si your calculation/)

“folded up like Shanghai.” That’s a joke. when everyone in the forum agrees that 24cr is a ‘ decent success”. When both Dibakar and Emran had said on national TV and elsewhere that they just needed 4.5 cr from theatres to break even.

By that token, Dibakar should not be make to his next film I guess..

“Who made Kahaani, Paan Singh Tomar, Vicky Donor such big successes? ”

So this is the highest that Indian cinema can aspire to, is it? These are the films that will make the whole world come knocking at India’s door?

    To be honest,

Paan singh tomar for me was a good movie but nothing gigantic great…It was Irrfan’s performance which made the movie what it is today..the film in its own was just about decent.

About Vicky donor– it was a good fun entertaining film where every actor acted really well. I can understand the reception it has got mainly in delhi-punjab region (because of the language-punjabi) but I don’t understands people singing paeans about it. Its just a fun movie..nothing else !! Personally I liked last year’s Pyaar Ka Punchnama much more than Vicky donor.

For me Vicky Donor and Pyar ka Punchnama have the same standing. Both brilliant pieces of commercial cinema. Though I would say VD had some moments better than PKP.

It too would rate Vicky Donor a bit higher than PKP. But both are cult movies for me.

Utkal, A movie’s budget is always production budget + p&a. GOW has been promoted very aggressively, not only at Cannes but also on TV with high number of paid promos. If Anurag Kashyap is talking about budget, he should talk about the real budget and not as per his own convenience.

It is Shanghai which is a joke. For a film which could do only 24-odd cr after an opening of 12 cr, it is clear that it has been rejected by its own target audience. Dibarkar Banerjee is a talented guy but he has been going downhill since his first KKG. The critics may have been praising him non-stop but the audience has rejected all his films post KKG and I believe the collective audience intelligence is higher than that of a few critics.

Kahaani, PST and VD is brilliant cinema for me. And I don’t care if the whole world comes knocking at our door or not.
