GoW creates a new record
Gangs of Wasseypur has averaged a rating of 9 with voting by 2471 voters. No film in the past has got anywhere close after more than 1000 votes. It shows how much the film has been liked by some people. a true cult film, if ever there was.
And no matter how much people like BoI and Rajesh Singh try to run down the film, the two parts together are going to end up with a tidy profit, apart from having a brush with immortality.

0I liked the movie but can’t really understand people raving about it as if it is one of the best Hindi films ever. The first half has a number of irrelevant sequences- lots of unnecessary expletives used- graphic violence (The Kasai bits)- The screenplay meanders between being a revenge story and being a biopic of Sardar Khan- his colorful life is given more prominence over anything else- his lascivious ways and philandering.
Anurag Kashyap and his coterie and his supporters scoff at the Masala movies that revel in playing at the gallery. But this movie does it more than any other movie in recent past. The abuses and language raised more laughs than any comedy I could think of from the last few years. Sardar’s roving eye and the sexual tension again caused a mini frenzy in the cinema. And all this was just incidental to the plot of the movie.
Overall though it is an ambitious attempt and an interesting premise. Deserves between 3 to 3.5 stars in my book.

May be its the small film lovers way of expressing akin to salman fans going gaga over a just about decent ETT trailer as if its the best trailer ever

0I think this one will have good legs & will end up in the 28-30 crore range which is a good final cume.
& then we have part 2 coming up in next couple of months which should do better than part 1 (hopefully)
Everyone will make money out of this venture.

ha ha fair enough. But Salman fans get all the brickbats and ridicule for doing it while the other side assume a higher ground while doing the same. Salman fans are termed fanatics while the other side is hailed as the messiahs of alternative cinema in India.

0GOW was decent fun, but it could’ve been masterpiece if they would have assembled the things in appropriate manner. First 40 minutes of the film could’ve been cut short and made in just 15 minutes. Kashyap takes 160 minutes to tell a simple revenge story, and that too incomplete? That really ailed me.
And more vital culprit is wrong focus. He serves a whole new plot on his son’s love life. I mean that whole plot could have been edited.
GOW works for its exemplary peerformances and its quirkiness.

0piyush,
I’ll tell you the reason why.. If Salman makes a ready/bodyguard– only 2 out of 10 Sallu fans will not defend it.
but if Anurag makes a That girl in Yellow Boots– at least 7 out of 10 fans on the other side will have no qualms in rejecting it.

0@Suprabh,
And I don’t agree with the term you have used- “Small film lovers”. Everyone loves a good film- be it a Kahaani or Vicky Donor or Paan Singh Tomar or even Shanghai (which I liked very much).
I walked into GOW really wanting to love it. I was very excited by the synopsis I had read- The Bihar ke Lala song is one of the best in recent times- But the film has no regards for a normal average film goer- especially in the first half- by the way it treats violence and sex. Lot’s of it is quite disturbing. Ek baar ticket khareed lo 4-5 star dekh ke phir toh bahar wapas aa nahin sakte. Ultimately I didn’t love it but surely liked it overall- there is lots to admire in the movie.
Waiting for the day when Anurag Kashyap makes a movie sans the gimmicks- another Black Friday maybe.

0@Suprabh,
A Ready or a Bodyguard is made as escapist entertainment. Lots of people buy it, lots don’t. One cannot take the stand that these are stupid films and anyone who likes them is being stupid.
Personally I didn’t enjoy Ready in cinema, but when I see it on TV I don’t mind it. Bodyguard I liked in cinema, but don’t appreciate much on TV. (Talking about watching bits and pieces on TV)
So what the 8 out of the 10 Bhai fans who defend movies like Ready and Bodyguard are actually doing is negating the claim that it is uncool to enjoy such movies. Or that enjoying such movies is being intellectually challenged. This is a notion that is propagated by the other side. And I too have serious reservations against it.

Saw Ferrari Ki Sawaari too recently. VVC was talking about stupid formula films making 100 Cr (or something on that lines). Trust me FKS is as stupid as it gets. But still it has some moments. Overall a decent film. Quite like Ready or Bodyguard in my books. But the intelligentsia will always call FKS an intelligent film, while Ready and Bodyguard will remain inane.

0I saw the film and it is one of Anurag’s comprehendable films. I have already admitted I do not have the intellectual tastes of a Masand or Rangan, so I will never understand or praise a No Smoking or a The Girl In Yellow Boots (where a daughter masturbates his father, for revenge!).
However, having met and interacted a lot of Profs and students of Jamia and JNU, I fail to understand Anurag’s obsessive and perverted sexual preferences.

I am not takking a stand against either of the movies. I am just giving you an idea about how fanatics react -(fanatics and not the rest of the audience which is generally very honest).–Fanatics of Salman vs Fanatics of alternative cinema.
And regarding Ferrari Ki sawaari– a lot of people said honest things about it– I dont thing many are calling it an intelligent film.
P.S. here’s my review

Give me a Black Friday, the first half of Dev D, Shanghai, Amir, A Wednesday, No One Killed Jessica, Kahaani, Welcome To Sajjanpur, Bazaar, Mandi, Aparsh, Katha etc. any day.

“I am not takking a stand against either of the movies.”
You are indirectly doing exactly that. If some Salman fan has good things to say about the two movies- you term him a fanatic- And refuse to accept them as a part of the rest of the audience. So what you are doing is plain stereotyping.
Though no issues at all- either which way. It is natural and everyone does it.
In my shabdkosh- A fanatic is someone who spends more time and efforts deriding other stars than how much he spends in talking about his own favorites. And who cannot appreciate the good work done by the other stars either. There are many such people on this forum. And frankly, very few of them are Salman fans.

0Well said Tango. Alternative cinema lovers do feel the need to run down regular commercial fares to enahnce their cinema understanding abilities, no matter how abstract.
Irrespective of the fact that I enjoyed no smoking. It’s ok to watch such cinema to gauge what’s going thru a directors mind while filming such abstractness. But I don’t understand “my cinema is greater” theory. As a recent case of G 93 ridiculing Indian audience for not accepting shanghai.
I mean even a documentary needs to have a grasp while stating facts. It needs to “entertain (read enlighten)” if it’s something you already know it’s never gonna arrest your attention.Even a Surabhi was a hit then because though it stated facts it did so in an entertaining way. So “entertainement” is must.
Sorry if I made a fe typos..in a train..on the move..in the flow

Pleasure! And my views on alternative cinema quite match yours, as you probably know. I have been really busy this past one month and have had no time to watch films. And thus this prolonged absence from posting a write-up on some or the other old movie. Have quite a few movies that I wish to see- Will start with Sunil Dutt’s Yaadein (the Soliloquy movie) whenever I get time.
