Any BOI spokesman can explain?

Can anyone explain how Ra One costing 150 cr plus and netting 115 cr in India is a HIT and Shanghai costing 20 cr including print and publicity and netting 23 cr already is a FLOP?

I will be enlightened.

    Utkal,

You yourself said in another thread, that viewership matters..So now find out how many people watched Shanghai and how many watched Ra.one ?

Please put forward another one of your “can be molded into any whichever way that suits me” theory.

suprabh u strike at the very right moment :D
utkal boi must have used theatrical system to determine ra1 verdict coz no matter what ppl say..it is still tough to do 115 crores..though even srk fans agree it was a perception flop..boi go purely by numbers

about shangai if it had good wom it would have trended like vicky donor..it didnt..so its a flop..vicky donor had genuine good wom..shangai had good wom from pseudo critics only..thats the difference
aur aap kabse choti moti gareeb filmon ka messiah banne lage :D

All I am asking is please define what is a flop and whatb is ahit. and not one person has done it so far .

dennycrane, ‘ must have used theatrical system to determine ra 1 verdict’ can you tell what is that animal called theatrical verdict?

and by waht system is Murder 2 a blockbuster?

I haven’t got any answer so far.

The fact is box office verdicts are even more subjective than critic’s ratings. At least critics explain their rating with reasoning.

denny 1: it is still tough to do 115 crores? Really? Tough to net 115 cr after spending 150 crores? any examples where a film has spent 150 cr on itself and netted only 115 cr? It is the easiest thing in the world.

” it is still tough to do 115 crores? Really? Tough to net 115 cr after spending 150 crores? any examples where a film has spent 150 cr on itself and netted only 115 cr? It is the easiest thing in the world.”

clearly you know less and you speak more than you know…Its not as easy as you think.. Hollywood is far ahead of bollywood in terms of earning millions..and yet you have movies there that are made on a massive budget, promoted well and still bomb..

A very big example was “The Adventures of Pluto Nash” made on a budget of $100.1 million starring one their biggest money minter stars Eddie Murphy and guess how much it earned— 7 million USD…. Now dig that , if it was this easy why did this happen…May be they should have consulted you before making this movie

Suprabh: why do you expose your ignorance of basic logic? You pick up one film. You pick up 100 films spending 100 million in a year and see how may made less than 80 million. If it is 200, then for 80% of them it was easy.

Obviously ” The adventures of Pluto Nash’ was the exception.

So pick up ten top budget films ina year and give thestatistics, that will show how easy or difficult it is.

And films costing 100 million and making 80 million , are not called, hits, even in Hollywood.

    And

Who is talking of wom and why? ra One did not have good wom and it is Hit as per BoI. murder 2 did not have good wom and it is a Blockbuster.

So why bring wom into this? We are talking box office here.

    utkal,

and thats what you don’t understand too..

you talk about 100 films spending 100 million in an year– apply that logic to India–and tell me the names of 5 (forget 100) that ever spent 100 crores in their making?

Imagine how much difficult it is to score a century on a sticky wicket than to do it on a flat pitch..

Who is lacking their basic knowledge now?

  16. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

Suprabh: “on a sticky wicket than to do it on a flat pitch..”

What sticky wicket you are talking about. More than 5 film sin the last twenty months have earned more than 115 cr by spending not more than 70 crores. And the only time a film in India spent close to 150 cr it made more than 200 cr.

The ’100′ was jus an arbitrary number. I mentiined 10 also. The question is how many spend 100 and fail to mkae even 80.

If in India there were many films spending 150 crore and not getting comfortably past 115 cr, you could have said 115 cr was an achievemnt. Otherwise, it is no big deal, as films spending much less have done it already.

  17. suprabh

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Utkal– Sticky wicket meant– the risk of spending that much amount of money– because its not common to do so in Bollywood. How many movies have spent more than 100 crores on their production ?

  18. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Endhiran did and it earned 200 cr plus. The fcat that it took the risk is commendable. But the climbers who died on the way to Everest were remarakbly brave. But no one remembers their name. you are Tenzing Norgay or Edmund Hillary if you mkae it.

If he could have made the risk pay off , sure, it would have praiseworthy. and even if he did not mkae that much money and had turned out to be a good film, still a few pats on the back would have been due. But a film that rates 5 on Imdb and makes 80% of its budget..well … you can come up with your own name for what you call it.

did endhiran earned 200 cr net in india only????????

as much as i know endhiran grossed some 200 cr+ worldwide(may be around 230cr worldwide gross)…..correct me if i am wrong and compare the gross of ra one and endhiran then…….and plz don increase the cost of ra one to 150 cr….

  19. suprabh

    Utkal,

Don’t you think in an industry out making more than 150 films an year, only 2 films have done it so far (spent 100 crores or more) is still a very risky business..? And yes things can go wrong–which actually happened with Ra.one …(It is a bad movie) but then you cant deny it was watched by 100 crores worth of tickets.

  20. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

A very good discussion between Utkal and Suprabh.

Well the summary is … Shanghai is small budget failure, RA.one was big budget failure and Endhiran was big budget success. ROI wise Shanghai might be break even so was RA.One. Endhiran made very little profits. Business and cost wise Endhiran and RA.One were comparative, but perception wise both are poles apart, because Endhiran/Robot got immense praise from critics and audience alike .. while Ra.One was just opposite. Also business scope of Endhiran was much lesser, majority came from South India, this means appreciation was immense from target audience.

Endhiran: Biggest hit in the history of Indian cinema

    Endhiran

In two weeks, the film has collected a never-before Rs 200 crore.

Rajinikant may not have been a big favourite earlier other than in Tamil Nadu, but the success of Robot has proved that the superstar is a big craze even in other centres and especially in the North.

Endhiran (the Tamil version) and Robot (the dubbed version in Hindi), starring Rajinikant-Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, has surpassed all box-office collections thus making it the biggest -ever grosser in the history of Indian cinema, according to trade analyst N.P. Yadav. He asserts that 3 Idiots was the last film to net Rs.150 crores while Endhiran/ Robot has had a net collection of Rs 200-225 crore worldwide since its release on October 1, which is nearly double of Dabangg and is still going strong.

The film made at the whopping budget of Rs.170 crore, had screening starting as early as 5 a.m. in certain places of Tamil Nadu, and in this state alone, it collected Rs. 150 crore with an approximate Rs 50 crore in other South centres while the dubbed version has made Rs 15 crore in India. “It is Rajinikant’s charisma that works in his favour. Moreover it is an out-and-out masala film, with Aishwarya to add to the glamour quotient, the lavish locations and extravagant special effects,” he states. ..

    http://www.indianexpress.com/news/endhiran-biggest-hit-in-the-history-of-indian-cinema/697154/0

Trade analyst Komal Nahata affirms that Endhiran/Robot has broken language barriers elsewhere in the country too. “Endhiran alone has made business more than Rs. 100 crore, the magic mark that distributors earned through 3 Idiots. North Indians who don’t take kindly to Rajnikanth and other South Indian stars have accepted the film, which in itself is a huge success,” he sums up.

    At the movies

According to exhibitors in Hyderabad, tickets were sold out for Endhiran sooner than they did for Robo and Robot. The film has been running to packed houses in all three languages, leaving theatre owners perplexed as to how to make way for this week’s releases — Brindaavanam, Aakrosh and Knock Out.

The growing number of shows and response to originals like Vinnai Thaandi Varuvaya, Raavanan and Paiyya alongside the respective Telugu dubbed/remade versions Ye Maya Chesave, Villain and Awara are indicators to the city’s cosmopolitan nature.

The distributors’ share from Endhiran alone has surpassed the Rs. 100 crore, beating the previous record of 3 Idiots.

Looks like Shanghai will wrap-up around 25 crores

And this is from Doga’s “Shanghai Business Dynamics” post:

    ————————————————————————–

COP : Cost of Production = 12.5 cr
    P/P : Print and Publicity = 8.0 cr

    Total Cost = 20.5 cr

    Non Theatrical Revenue

    Satellite Rights = 9.0 cr
    Music/Other Rights = 2.75 cr

    Total Revenue = 11.75 cr

Amount to be recovered = 8.75 cr

Now to recover 8.75 cr DS, the movie has to do around 17.5 cr Nett in India….(considering overseas will be negligible).

john carter was made on 250 mill yet made just 70 mill
dark shadows made on a budgett of 150 mill.yet makes 75 mill
prometheus bufdget is 130 milll and and has made 113 mill and is considered a boxoffice success
snow white and the huntsman made on a budget of 170 mill has made 140 mill and is considered a hit
battleship made on a budget of 209 mill has made 63 mill…
and i can give u a lot more examples..
now mr utkal do u see a pattern here n understand what suprabh was trying to explain..
having a huge budget doesnt guarantee u boxoffice success and budget doesnt really drive boxoffice..
even today in hollywood 100 mill is still considered an achievement..u can spend 200 mill and still u cant guarantee the movie will do 100 mill..
similarly ra1 selling 100 crore worth of tickets is still an achievement..ya even srk fans admit its a huge diasappointment perception wise and wid the hype surrounding it could have done lot more…
but there is a reason only 8-9 films have done 100 crore..coz 100 crore is no halwa..only top 6 stars have the potential to cross tht mark..even impressive is the fact tht a hit movie of srk don 2 did less than ra1..
boi use theatre collections to decide the verdict of a film and also consider print counts..doing 115 crore is still big for a big movie..if a movie is made on 200 crore and the movie does 180 crore would u consider tht a flop?

shangai is a flop theatrically coz it made less even for a film of its size and it didnt even trend well to collect more like vicky donor..i think even peepli live did more than shangai..

do u now smell what suprabbh has been cooking ? :D

why do u think adam sandler is considered one of the most reliable boxoffice stars..coz he is the only one to have given 10 hundreed mill grossers in 11 years..
and doing 100 crore in bollywood is like doing 300 mill in hollywood milestone importance wise..even if the budget was 350 mill it would still be mighty tough to do 300 mill dollars in hollywood.though there are movies tht has done it..yet its very tough…
and in bollywood 100 crore is still 100 crore n only a handful of movies does it

Endhiran overseas is also much bigger than raone where srk is supposed to rule.
Endhiran overseas : 56 cr gross in first run.
And recently it was released in japan one month back and ut got thunderous opening. Total is expected to be 80 cr min.
Indian distributor share for endhiran is 125 cr much bigger than 3i.
Raone is collossal failure inspiteof much bigger budget and investment from 2G scamsters srk’s closest friend karim morani.

@utkal/suprabh – kya reasonable jhagda kar rahe ho. if there are not many films with 150 cr budget, u guys can take out precentage yaar. just calculate how many films have collected 76% of their cost.

i am sure there wud be many. but the question is how many films did 76% of thier cost and still declared a hit then there will be just one – RA1.

but wait a second! did not devdas, another sharukh film had a cost of 50 cr and collected 38 cr (76% of the budget)

sop the bgoi formula is final. Srk films are a hiot if they collect anything above 76% of the cost. fdor the rest its tougher.

budget of a movie is never known , it’s always estimated , thus the verdict can never depend only on budget if it does some big bussiness on Box office….the real budget is always unknown……

@danish veer’s budget was told to be 100 cr , everywhere talk was of it being the biggest budget movie and still wikipedia writes it 94 cr, but BOI give verdict as below average not even flop…….what will you say about it….
