Bollywood’s 10 Greatest Comedies – Reworked On Public Protests

I made a huge mistake in making this countdown and would be the 1st one to admit it. my last couple of countdowns, based on ‘verdicts’ had invited criticism from members saying verdicts are subjective (how?) . also, most successful comedies had fallen into the bracket of ‘superhit’ and i didnt know with similar verdicts how to rank them. . so i thought i wud make this one numbers based and hence ranked films of the same verdicts based on their position in the list of ‘biggest hits of the decade’. however i failed to realize that the list is based on unadjusted revenues which means the films releasing closet to the end of the decade had automatically a higher ranking, even if lower verdicts. so i am changing this countdown entirely and making it ‘verdict’ based like all other countdowns. wat i have done is i have ranked them according to their verdicts and if some films have the same verdicts i have taken their ranking on the ‘top 5 hits’ page of boxofficeindia.com as its verdicst based  rather than the decade’s ranking page thats inflation unadjusted. however my warning still applies.

warning – this is not for the weak hearted ( which most pseudos with sedentary white collar jobs are, so are the ‘nostalgia struck’ oldies stuck in the time warp of the 70s/80s).  this one may have many shockers. as is widely known in naachgaana, i am not the type who will get confused between ‘my favourite 10′ and ‘top 10′.  so wats new many may ask! well this is wat.

comedy is one genre over which the ‘mall multiplex bound pseudo intellectual middle class’ has excersized maximum ‘dadagiri’ while declaring (subjectively offcourse) ‘greatest’, ”classics’ etc. the reason is most of them are basically frivolous ppl, however much they project themselves as intellectuals and therefore comedy is their favourite genre, as they are a light watch. and hence the absolute effort to hold up any definitions of a ‘good comedy’ to ransom. simply translated (from english to english) any comedy that appeals to their middle class sensiilties is a good comedy, rest are trash. unfortunately, the most comprehensive survey of the ppl, the boxoffice, doesnt seem to agree with them, hence many shockers in stock for them. here goes….

10. chalti ka naam gaadi- (superhit – 2nd biggets hit of 1958) three real life brothers play reel life brothers. Ashok kumar, kishore kumar and anup kumar run a motor garage and a beautiful girl madhubala comes into their life one rainy night. Mayhem follows. Old fashioned slow cute comedy.

9. saajan chale sasural/ aazaad -(super hits, 2nd biggets hits of 1996 and 1955 respectively) -  saajan chale sasural, a regular comedy about a husband of two wives was entirely dependeant upon govinda’s talent. and from slapstick to mimickry he displayed a wide range of them. the heroines,  including tabu of the much touted talent fame were just about ok in my opinion and able suppoert came from kadar khan and satish kaushik. david dhawan’s best work in film editing, especially in the song ‘tum to dhokhebaaz ho’ raises the film to the next level.

aazaad had dilip kumar doing the various gigs of a comedian like impersonations, slapstick and using other creative tools. And he wasn’t the only surprise in the film. Even meena kumari, till then known as the great tragedienne, was a huge revelation. Within the same year she had shocked ppl twice with her comic brilliance in bandish and then azaad. However it was azaad that ppl took to majorly, making it a huge hit.-

8. ram aur shyaam(super hit, 2nd biggets hit of 1967)  – this was the original on which ‘seeta aur geeta’ was based. The master of tragedy dilip kumar had risen to the occasion many times earlier with comedy (aan, aazaad, Kohinoor) but this one he took to another level altogether. Though mumtaz and some smaller character actors were good (pran off course was ‘stock’ though must say was bound by his character) the surprise package was the serious, sedate waheeda rehman who gave a delightfully funny, though subtle performance.

7.  seeta aur geeta -(super hit, biggest hit of 1972) it’s a hema malini show all the way but dharmendra and sanjeev kumar provide able support and manorama, though over the top, was a scream. This comedy about twins replacing each other is the only heroine oriented film in this list. And to think many intellectuals in the 70s (what? Didn’t you know all naachgaana members had uncles?)  raised questions about hema malini’s talent.

6. – no entry – (super hit, biggest hit of 2005) this is one of my eternal favourite 3 (with other two being jaane bhi do yaaron and aankhein of govinda). its again a regular film about infidelity but the ‘twist-a-minute’ screenpaly, excellent direction and able performances make this one a rib tickling affair. my fave scenes are the one in the park with astrologer where lara mistakes a kid for anil kapoor’s child from another wife and the climax, especially the snake appearing scene and the salman khan gem (apparently improvised by him) to fardeen khan “abbey tu sunny hai, sunny deol nahin”. off course fardeen khan is there but chaand mein bhi to daagh hai.

5. partner – (blockbuster, 3rd biggest hit of 2007)  this one brought together salman khan and govinda, two stars with maximum no of top comic hits. no wnder it was the 1st blockbuster in the history of comedies in india (Though there had been an alltime blockbuster earlier that u will see later in the countdown) govinda’s verstility and salman khan’s spontanety made this film such a laugh riot that u wud not stop rolling in the aisles even for a second. my fave sceene – well where govinad (pretending to be a gay) bumps into suresh menon at katrina’s wedding scene. and the scene salman teaches govinda to be more stylish.

4. ‘golmal 3′ -(blockbuster 2nd biggest hit of 2010) -  the 3rd part of this franchise was also the biggets hit yielding the advantage of the trust it had built over two earlier products. not that the film wasnt a scream. everyone was in his element, something that rarely happens in any film, including comedy. the higlight is the scene where the guys threaten each other with various objects without saying a word as the parents watch ‘hum saath saath hain’ on tv.

3. welcome (blockbuster, 2nd biggest hit of 2007) – this is akshay kumar’s only film in the list, though fairly at the top. Anil kapoor and nana patekar, apart from paresh rawal, vijay raaz etc provide good support and so does,  in my opinion, mallika sherawat. its not clear till the very end what the film is about and thats is maximum fun. anything happens in this film at anytime, with hilarious effect. akshay was funny in the scene where he pretends to be not afraid of  nana and anil but actually is, nana is funny in the shooting sequence and anil kapoor is a scream throughout. paresh rawal i think was ordinary.

2. ready (blockbuster on the cusp of atbb)  – this is perhaps the only comedy in this list that entirely depends upon the talent and charisma of its lead star (more than even the top hit film in the countdown and the films starring the actor with most films in the list – govinda) ready had nothing except salman khan in it. so many ppl within this forum and outside keep wondering what is it that made ready a hit. well may be they shud accept a volcano of comic talent, subtle, spontaneous unpretentious and efoortless can lift even the most ordinary film to the biggest blockbuster stautus.

1. aankhien (all time blockbuster)  -wat is it about? Well everything. Mistaken identity to patriotism, family drama to terrorism. this is the biggest hit comedy film in the history of bollywood and belive you me- fuck intellectuals and grab a DVd of this one (I suggest don’t even wait for the next TV telecast.) there is not one dull moment in the film. Its so fast paced and funny, its not funny. And to top it there are two govindas, two kadar khans, two rajbabbars and, many say,  two chunkey pandeys (chunky and the monkey). Wat more cud u ask for.

Conclusion – most of the conclusions also STILL remian the same as the  earlier ones. these are NOW the 10 greatest comedies of bollywood as chosen by the ticket buying public. STILL no padosan, no golmaal (old) . no chupke chupke, (sorry yakuza) no andaaz apna apna, no hera pheri (sorry 90s kids) and with all due respects no ‘jaane bhi do yaaron’ (my eternal favourite but sorry all intellectuals on behalf of the teeming millions). and yes its STILL  obvious that  govinda is the greatest comedy genius of the century (with 3 films in the list including the top most one), followed by salman YES STILL (biwi no 1 and judwa go out by this methodology but partner and ready come in their place and salman STILL has 3 films) while . Dilip kumar has two films in the list (so much for efforts to limit him as ‘tragedy king’).. And a certain joker whose fans think he is india’s answer to charlie chaplin, wud be shocked to know he has just one multi hero film in the countdown.  akshay kumar STILL  doesn’t stand anywhere in comedy too,  as far as the paying public is concerened. Yaani tashan and co. had performed his coronation amongst themselves basically. Sadly for yakuza, by this methodlogy even namak halal goes out as it is a superhit but its rank on top 5 hits page is rather low at no 4.   dharmedra (a supposedly comic genius) at spot 7 in a heroine dominated film and even kishore kumar (at spot 10), have one film each in the list.

Surprisingly even mehmood STILL doesn’t have a single film in the list underlining the facts that

1. comedy came into its own much later in bollywood and before the 90s there were not more than one big hit comedy in a decade and …..

2. most comedians have done their best work in the films where heroes don’t do comedy but the biggest hits at the boxoffice are the comedies where regular heroes perform comedy.

Amongst the directors, david dhawan obviously rules with 4 films in the list, including the top film, followed by anees bazmi with 3 films. No other director has more than one film in the countdown.

@yakuza – for me bodyguard’s quality comes from the poignant love story but its widely percieved as a masala/action film. there is no way to ‘identify the right genre’ as you call it. i did not look at munnbhai films, 3 idiots and singh is king as comedy, many think they are comedies. i called biwi no1 a comedy, u say its not.

i defined comedy films on the basis that if most or majority of the scenes in afilm were handled in a comic manner then its a comedy. and thatw as the case with biwi no 1. even the final scene where salman and karisma reunite, insted of some heavy duty emotional dialogue there was that “aadmi kutta hota hai” dialogue with salman crying in a funny way.

on the other hand, in sinkgh is king, 3 idiots and munnabhai and even ishq, majority of scenes were not handled in a funny way. especially after the 1st half most of the scenes in these films were emotional/drama/feel good varity and not out and out funny. thats why i did not count them as comedies

this list might give some happinesss to salman haters.
but no maatter how many list we make salman films will automatically find place, because he is the only actor to have more attb, biggest hits, solo bbs in so many different genres.salman will give more biggest hits and in the top ten in the future,i wont be surprised if salman has all top ten films.time will tell.salman is on song now.let the jagganaut continue.

  7. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    @rocky6 – exactly.

and salman has been on a jugernaut from the very beginning. in between for a few years just the revenue of his films (not footfall) had gone down as they were not working in multiplexes. but now with changes in infrastructure (theatres) he is where he always belonged. at the top.

i challenge i am willing to make this list on any other methgodology (ranking on top hits pages will put 5 slman filsm on the lsit) we have already tried two methodologies and salman remians at no 2. lest c if they can come up with another method.

Awesome discussion between Phantom and Yakuza,

    —-

Phantom: Slightly off-the-topic but it’s quite amazing that Amitabh Bachchan and Chunky Pandey have equal number of ATBBs with almost equal contribution in respective ATBBs.

Yakuza: This is your SUBJECTIVE opinion. No scientific way to prove the verdicts so far.

Phantom: Scientifically, Chunky has two 100 cr grossers and Bachchan none

Yakuza : ATBB is subjective thing discovered in 90?s .. Amitabh was part of 9 All time earners by 1984 . . out of total 13 all time earners.
In first 15 years, by 1984 Amitabh has three times more All time earner than Salman in first 24 years.ATBB is subjective thing discovered in 90?s .. Amitabh was part of 9 All time earners by 1984 . . out of total 13 all time earners.

    CFIC,

I think No Entry & Partner were HUGE Blockbusters unlike Housefull and HF-2.

So, technically, NE & Partner r the BIGGER HITS and More Liked Films.

    ………

For me Personally it will be,

    No Entry(CLASSIC)
    Housefull
    Housefull-2
    Partner

    • Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Classic?????? Sir you people are my seniors, I want to know Classic definition.
What is Classic??? I always thought Padosan kind movies are Classic.
Neither No Entry was Classic nor a Blockbuster. This was mere more or less hilarious than any other Super Hit comedy.
And Housefull-2 has bigger collection than No Entry but No entry was enjoyable. Both Housefull have lower collections than Partner but much more enjoyable than Partner.
      Correction:-
      No Entry
      Housefull-2
      Housefull
      Partner

@sernzy in no manner on box office noentry n partner than r bigger than hf2 n its danish mathodologey he give it with verdict n i think no entry n partner enjoys same verdict like housefull,housefull2,phir hera pheri n singh is king.
even collection wise hf2 n ready has diff of only 6 cr the thing is that danish uses his post to pr salman n its proved by me in his every list.

  17. come_fall_in_chat

@serenzy i think there is not much diff in box office collection of hf2 n ready hardly 6 cr ok so u can judge the partiality of danish by his coments n post n i have proved in all his countdown that he is doing only salman pr n for that he pull down other star n he knows there is only one star who is bigger threat in terms of boxoffice n popularity for salman so he is intentionaly left akki movies.

  18. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

i have an idea. Make list of top five comedies of each star and then merge dem according to their net adjusted gross. U can take help of doga nd othrs.

    CFIC,

    “In no manner on box
office no entry n partner than r bigger than hf2″

Hahaha… Seems u need to Study the Box-Office a little more.

Partner & NE are Huge BLOCKBUSTERS.

Housefull-1,2, PHP, SIK are Not Even Close to being a BB.

Only ‘Welcome’ is one Akshay Kumar Movie that Qualifies in Comedy Genre.

” i think there is not
    much diff in box office
    collection of hf2 n ready”

BO doesn’t work dat way dear…It’s Not hw much Movie collectd hw much.

HF-2′s Budget is Bigger then Ready and is a Superhit only.

It all depends on ROI, BO Impact, Trending/Sustaining, Final Nett & then Verdict comes out and it shws HF-2 is far away frm Blockbustr Tag.

Kehne ko RA.One did more den Hf2…Den by ur Logic,ra1 also Superhit…Haha!

RA.One did ’100cr’ Nett more den PST and v all knw vich is d Bigger Hit.

    Yup prg…My mistake…
NE was a Superhit but 3 More Points I’d like to say,

    - It’s Opening was V.Weak..Not a Good Opening.

    - But due to Tremendous Appreciation & WOM, it ran for Many Weeks and Benefitted Boney Kapoor a Lot I think.

    - It was the BIGGEST HIT of 2005(vich is Not the case with Movies of Akshay mentioned by CFIC).

Though Personally, I wudnt credit Salman much for NE but he was a Part of the Cycle fr Sure.

    ……..

OTOH, Partner is a Clear Cut case…Cannot be Doubted at all.

#3 in 2007 though Behind Welcome at #2.

@rocklie &phantom – agar tum dono sachmuch hi bachchan ko dislike karte ho tabhi uski jhand karo, dont get in the same trap that yakuza got into – “since danish praises salman to skies, i will criticize him though i like salman”.

for instance my stand on bachchan is quite clear- i hate him as a person fro his anipulative and hypcritical ways, and i think most of his legendary success is media hype still no one can deny the 10 years 91973-1983) long whirlwind that bachchan was. nobody in the history of bollywood has seen that kind of success – for 10 years.

as for salman, its been 25 years and thats wat atrue legend is – without any media mangement – infact despite strongest piossible media sabotage.

in any case i think u two dont like bachchan at all, is it?

  26. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@prashant – verdicts dekh ke list bana di maine.

and to reply on nehalf of rockie – dilip kumar has a solo hero atbb and dharmendra has sholay.

@comefallinchat – arrey theek se padha karo. after taking blockbuster i had too many superhits so wat i did was included those that were at the top (biggest hits of the byear) or closest to the top in the top 5 hits page of boi. and hoseful was not. if u noticed only those superhits have managed to be in the list that were either top hits of the year or second biggest. koi to scientific criterion rakhna padega na.

singh is king is also not there in the list fro the same reason. also i thionk singh is king is drama not comedy. in any case its didnt qualify too.

@yakuza – kyon ab kya kami hai post mein? verdicts aur top 5 page par ranking ke basis pr hain saari filmien.

pehle ready nahin thi kyonki iss decade ki ranking nahin le sakta tha kyonki poori nahin hai. aur partner isliye nahin thi ki 2000s ke decade mein 2wo kaafi neeche thi. but wen i realized that there is a flw in takeing ranking of the decade as its unadjusted and films closer to the end of the decade get higher ranking, i turned to the originakl method, the verdicts. ab kyunki comedy mein atbb aur bb total 5 hi thi i had to take some of the superhits and i took them accorduing to their place in top 5 page. ab kya problem hai?

actually i know kya problem hai. iss methodology se namak halaal (superhit but at spot 4 in 1982) bhi coundown se nikal gayi, bachchan’s only film.

yakuza the wise thing to do wud be to agree that wenever bachchan did out and out comedy, films didnt work (satte pe satta etc) he doesnt huge comedy hits and his comedy in other genre films were more or less copying dilip kumar.

  27. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

@harry sir – u are entitled to ur view but i have selected film based on methodology

@comefallinchat – partner is clearly mentioned as blockbuster on boi, houseful superhit. as for no entry, yes its a superhit but its in the list by virtue of being biggest hit of 2005. none of the housefull films are even at spot two, else they wud have been included. nor is singh is king.

tituff – india has had close to 100 stars,. if we take top 5 comedies of each star (many may not even have 5 coemdies) it will be a list of 500 films not top 10.

@serenzy – dheer dheere tum bhi scintific hote ja rahe ho. soch lena. badi buri bimaari hai. badi gandi latt hai. har taraf se gaaliyaan padti hain yahaan scientific bande ko. sab apne opinions (axxholes) dikha ke hi baat karna pasand karte hain.

Probably Rekha hates him .. :) for ruining her life …
Probably Jaya hates him… as he cheated on her …
Probably jrB hates him … as he forcefully does item nbrs in his movies
Probably his daughter hates him …. as she gets her MANLY looks from him
Probably his grand daughter hates him …. as she is born to a NIKAMMA baap jrB .. and jrB ko paida kiya issne …

Probably Ramu hates him …. because since the time bachchan came into his movies he has became a disaster director

Probably Mani Ratnam hates him …. because he was blaming the failure of raavan on him

Probably Producers hate him … because he has TANKED soo many of em

Probably Directors hate him …. because he has succesfully ended their careers in BW

Probably audience hate him … because he dishes out CRAP after CRAP

    —–
I think apart from above mentioned handful of 100cr prople nobody hates him.

I dont hate him … afterall i get soo much of fun out of him on NG :P

but plz dont start hating me since i am a big fan of bachchan the actor (strictly till 1982 i.e. shakti)

aur yakuza ko bhi hate na karna. bichara time warp mein phansa hua hai.

@nawaabsaab – film sabse succesful banti hai jab sabse zyaada ticket bikti hai (though the situation was a lil different ebwtween 2000-2009 becoz of urban multiplexes)

aur jiski sabse zyaada tickets bikti hai wahi greatest film hoti hai. as it has a democratic endorsement of the paying public, not a handfull of critics and self proclaimed intellectuals.

@in sports there is the concept of winning and loosing. but in cinema there is not. but if u think u will use this ‘smart trick’ to corner me, u have another think coming. if we consider films also a competition, the film that sells maximum ticket wins and ready was the runner up in 2010.

all the other parameters that u will apply to judge a film will be purely ur subjective o9pinion. give me one example that is not.

and if ready was a hit just becoz ppl wanted to see salman khan, u have never heard of the ‘classic tashan poser’ – then whey were main aur mrs khanna, london dreams and veer (where salman was predominant) not blockbusters?

mow u know who needs to get well soon?

@tituff – i think salman is an excellent actor, doubtlessly the 3rd best in the commercial cinema after dilip kumar and amitabh bachchan. he is very subtle, performs with his eyes (as opposed to eyebrows histrionics of a say, sharukh) is very spontaneous (unlike aamir whose minutest of hands movement seems calculated) and has a natural gift of projection that makes the teeming zillions connect with him.
