Why Does Shanghai Have Such Bad Collections When It Is A Good Film?

Tuesday 12th June 2012 09.00 IST
Boxofficeindia.Com Trade Network

Q. Does Cocktail have a chance at the box office or will it go the Agent Vinod way?

A. The film has a super hit song with Angerezi Beat and if the song is promoted it will get a good opening in Delhi and Punjab so it could manage a 7-8 crore first day but with a name like Cocktail the markets of heartland India will struggle from day one.

H Desai

Q. Is there any chance that Rowdy Rathore will beat Dabangg and Bodyguard business?
A. Unlikely as North India is not as strong as those films. 130 crore looks on and may even hit 135 crore but over 140 crore nett is near impossible.

S Kohli

Q. You have said that there is a dwindling audience today as earlier big hits 30 years ago were watched by 5 crore plus people with less population and today is 2 crore with 30-35% higher population, is this due to the content not being liked by people or people losing interest in films?
A. Piracy is biggest reason, if 2 crore people watch a popular film like Rowdy Rathore in the theatres in 5-6 weeks. The number of people watching it on cable or pirated VCD/DVD in the same period is humungous, it could even be double or even treble the theatre footfall count.

M Putane

Q. Why does Shanghai have such bad collections when it is a good film?
A. This good/bad film is all opinion and subjective. The collections say it is not a good film and that’s the bottom line. A 100 reasons can be given for low collections but the biggest reason is always bad content. When an actually good film does not open well, it will always have an upward trajectory at the box office whether its starts with 50 lakhs or 5 crore and this is not the case with Shanghai.

Never planned ‘Shanghai’ to be blockbuster: Banerjee

Never planned 'Shanghai' to be blockbuster: Banerjee

Dibakar Banerjee’s “Shanghai” has broken even and the director says his aim was to create a profit-making venture and not a blockbuster.

“‘Shanghai’ was never made to be the blockbuster of the year. We never thought even this would happen. We spent Rs.12 crore in the making and Rs.8 crore in the marketing. From Monday, we have been making profits. This was our aim and we have done it,” he told reporters Tuesday at Juhu PVR here.

Released Friday, “Shanghai” had a slow start but picked up during the weekend. It opened with Rs.3.2 core earnings on the first day and the collection went up by 30 percent Saturday and 35 percent Sunday.

On Monday, the film’s performance at the box office has been strong.

The film is topical as it focuses on the corruption in the political system and performances by Prosenjit Chatterjee, Abhay Deol, Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechlin have made it an interesting watch.

Talking about appreciation he has received from people, Banerjee said: “I have got 200 texts from people in the industry, my college, school, neighbourhood and all. They loved the film and really got the film.

“The film has impacted people regardless of the fact whether they are actors or normal people like us. There are a lot of people who have not liked the film, which is good. If a film polarises people and if they are talking about it, then it can’t be ignored.”

Dibakar also thanked the media and said that 50 percent publicity of “Shanghai” was done through media.

“I want to thank the media. The media supported us and that’s why we have done so well. Other films should be jealous of us,” he added.

Thats a total bullshit! … now I have started believing Utkal Da’s theory … may be they have something against the movie or its director!

However, there is a saying that goes around in NG (can’t remember who commented this first), that is – take the BO numbers from BOI but not their commentaries!

    Nirjhar,

If you consider, their answer line by line, you will see that it isn’t that wrong.

    - Good or Bad is opinion and subjective- TRUE
    - the collections say it is not a good film- TRUE- now one may debate over this, but consider this as a statement coming from a box office based website. According to a book seller Chetan bhagat is a far better nivelist compared to Arundhati Roy –in terms of numbers.
–A 100 reasons can be given for low collections but the biggest reason is always bad content– again, take it from a point of view of the number of audience watching the movie and finding it good enough to recommend to others.. BOI is not talking about whether the movie is praiseworthy or not..It is just implying everything in terms of a profitable or a thanda product.

You have to keep this in mind– Its a box office website–all they will talk will be in terms of numbers, salebility and profit- because for a business- the profit or loss is creteria for good or bad.

Its as good as saying– I may bake cakes that are super delicious to me but if after eating them, people aren’t coming for them again or recommending to others in huge numbers,, then in the business sense its a bad cake..

P.S. I haven’t seen Shanghai and I consider dibakar banerjee as one of the current generations most accomplished filmmakers.

    @Suprabh

First of all where others are saying collections are mixed or disappointment, they are saying that such a bad collection

I also agree that “This good/bad film is all opinion and subjective” … but I can’t agree with “The collections say it is not a good film” … they may be a BO site but this is too much gross statement

“A 100 reasons can be given for low collections but the biggest reason is always bad content.” – what is the definition of bad content? Not crowd pleasing? … why a form of art has to contain crowd pleasing materials to be called having good content?

“When an actually good film does not open well, it will always have an upward trajectory at the box office whether its starts with 50 lakhs or 5 crore and this is not the case with Shanghai.”

A recent example of Kahaani, PST or Vicky Donor doesn’t mean this theory is always true … if their dabba was full then there are numerous examples of good movies being turned into dabba goal … and do not underestimate the power of Rowdy Rathore wave

And regarding recommending to others, I will recommend it to those who have sensibilities of watching this type of movies.

    Nirjhar,

As I Said,, you will have to keep this in mind– that you are reading a subjective statement about the good/bad of a movie (an art form) from a box office website.. ;)

Picture it this way- Roger Ebert reviewing a movie on the basis of Box office and saying this – Twilight is a flop because it is the worst possible film that could ever have been made. Will you agree to him ? ;)

Since somethings are so subjective, it does matter where the statements regarding them are coming from.

Can you convince a single screen owner to not screen Bodyguard or Rowdy Rathore or Ready..because you think its a bad film? He will say..Arey Babu…hamare liye toh yahi top ki film hai.. ;)

I kind of disagree with their answer for the last question.

Collection cannot always be the bottom line for films. By that standards, can one say films like Swades, Wednesday, 1947 Earth, Andaz Apna Apna are bad films because they did not collect at the BO?

  10. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 3

‘Can one say films ike Swades, Wednesday, 1947 Earth, Andaz Apna Apna are bad films?’
Yes i said that many times. Swadesh is crap, srk hamming made it bad. any other actor would have done it what it deserved.

ye shanghai may not work at box office which is debtabale but movie is anything but “bad” if shanghia is bad film then what is RR

BOI should stick with giving numbers and leave their commenatry on films

Not a fane of “inttelect” wanna be blog but someone posted BALANCED review on film which i m sure u can all agree on (if u ignore his chmachagiri of abhishek ) I agree his take that DB bring’s INDIA contrast from KARN JOHAR india and NRI living in middle class and NIKE shirts

    Ann Jo’s Shanghai piece

When one watches Mr. Dibakar Banerjee’s (DB) ‘Shanghai’, it is hard to ignore the feeling of ‘déjà vu.’ They keep cropping back – in context to the plot, though it is adapted from a book— at key intervals and scenes during the movie proceedings. But what the heck, this is DB – he can conjure magical rabbits out of the most hackneyed of hats, thanks to his pedigree; and that is the over-riding hope that is always hovering in one’s mind during the course of this movie. Of course, the glowing reviews are something – what with Mr. Raja Sen drooling that DB should be carried on one’s shoulders as though he is the messiah of intelligent Indian cinema & Mr. Kashyap tweeting and retweeting reviews from the ‘western’ press that loved RAAVAN, RA ONE, DOSTANA and Abshishek Bachchan’s performances— that kindle this hope and one is forced to carry this baggage to the movie hall – and it is there that one feels the weight of all the glowing reviews shedding as the unspooling forces you to drop the weight of each and every shining review one has gone through in the last 48-72 hours.

For the uninitiated – i.e., for patrons that haven’t read the Greek novel ‘Z’ by Vasilis Vasilikos it is based on or watched Mr. Costa-Gavras’ cinematic adaptation of the same (& that includes me), the movie unspools through the central plot of an assassination and connects itself to different callouts of bureaucracy, democracy, ‘ideas’ of progress, treachery, globalization, and corruption, to name a few. DB builds his cinematic building over many such ‘pillars’ and shows us a crumbling structure of India whose administration firmly believes in ‘copying’ the success of China or any other developed nation but not in creating its own path to success. [Mild Spoilers begin]. One such opponent of this type of progress is bumped off and the entire story revolves around his girl-friend’s and wife’s fight for justice in bringing to book the culprits behind this crime. [Mild Spoilers end].

DB actually follows the traditional path of revealing the main culprit only at the denouement; but he reveals minute things at key intervals in the movie which then satisfyingly snowball into the climactic revelation. The film leaves one with mixed feelings as it progresses and after it ends. It is like being disappointed with the meal as a whole but impressed with certain ingredients – and it is such selective stimuli that majorly add to a sense of disappointment. Now here is the dichotomy; DB has shot this movie with such a minimalistic approach that he deserves to be lauded with the maximum decibel available at your disposal. He has, not in any scene in the movie, compromised with what he wants to show and how he visually wants to show. Absolutely no compromise. At all. Even if he showcases an ‘item’ number, the number just underlines our obsession with anything ‘foreign.’ It is akin to presenting one with a ‘gift’ that in itself is a sign of mockery. At the risk of sounding repetitive I am stressing on this only because this is the sign of a very intelligent mind. The problem is that in such a politically-charged theme, doesn’t the genre itself call for dramatics of at least some degree – however minimal? DB doesn’t think it necessary to raise the dramatic pitch of scenes even when it is a highly charged one intrinsically. (Consider the scene where the character of Ms. Kalki Koechlin (KK) discovers that one of her own is involved in this heinous crime.) The film is replete with many such scenes and they fail to deliver the ‘punch’ that might be good at such times.

While DB does not do justice in terms of a gripping narrative and tonal pitching of scenes, he succeeds tremendously in holding a mirror to the political repercussions to the man on the street/hinterland due to power-politics played out in the air-conditioned corridors of authority. And in the process he spares no one and alludes to many groan-inducing happenings in the Indian political or non-political landscape – Ms. Mayawati shamelessly flouting a garland weighed down by currency notes; referencing Enron as Genron and as a symbol of crony capitalism; or the symbiotic relationship between the Chief Minister and her Cabinet Secretary mirroring Ms. Sonia Gandhi’s and Mr. Manmohan Singh’s political relationship in an opposite direction. There are a plethora of scenes that brilliantly bring out the duality of India – an India for the foreign delegates and an India where the foot-soldiers actually toil and struggle to make a dignified living. (If the Oxford English dictionary were to neologically include ‘Johar’ and ‘Banerjee’, they could rightfully be included as ‘opposites’.) This is the dusty, sweaty, and slipper-less India; this is the India where you get NIKE and ADIDAS shirts made not in USA but printed in the GKBs (gutter ke baju) alleys of India’s towns and cities; this is the India with paan-stained and dust-imprinted walls – not the Nerolac painted ones. Even when the character is a New York returned one like KK’s Shalini, the abode she lives in India is significantly middle/upper middle-class India; not a customized Flushing Meadows’ apartment. Check out the scenes where the Mr. Abhay Deol’s (AD) Indian Administrative Services ‘ (IAS) Officer character of Krishnan asks his assistants to prepare a room for initiating an enquiry commission; or the scenes symbolizing babudom and our master-slave mentality when the lady-assistant of AD runs and closes the door instead of just walking as a normal human being or the waiters standing like school-kids when they are serving food; or the scenes depicting life-style and external accoutrement of Mr. Emraan Hashmi’s (EH) character of Jogi – brilliant stuff. There is one masterful scene where AD’s government car is stuck in an area that is occupied by the politician and his cronies’ dancing around like monkeys caring two hoots for public decency or rule of law and order. One such character jumps on the car and abuses the driver – as if it is the mistake of the public that they still don’t understand that roads are meant for dancing and monkeying around and creating public nuisance! That the idea of a developed nation lies not in just air-conditioned buildings and swanky malls and multiplexes charging 400 rupees for a movie ticket and 40 rupees for a quarter of a cup of tea but in creating public awareness and instilling respect toward public responsibility and fear of law and order is outstandingly encapsulated in this scene. This is where DB shines – and shines blindingly at that.

Coming to the performances, EH, Mr. Anant Jog (AJ) and Mr. Farooque Sheikh (FS), truly stand out. FS is brilliant in his portrayal of a ministerial bureaucrat who is happy to go along with the system and content being a happy puppet of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO). EH – aided by his physical attributes of a bloated stomach and tobacco/pan-stained teeth— sheds all his cocky mannerisms accrued in his films with the Bhatts and is fantastically in-tune with the rusticity of his character. AJ as a hapless and depressed hidden-face of ‘India Shining’ is highly effective in a brief but very vital role. AD plays his part as someone caught between idealism and the collateral realities of the IAS position he holds quite nicely; but one wonders why his character was made a Tamilian. The only value-addition he does in portraying the role of an IAS officer with a Tamil background is having phone conversations in Tamil either with his wife or his mother. Honestly, as a symbolic character representing some hope for common-sense in India, he could have been from any part of India. KK is a weaker link in the film’s strong chain of performances – thanks of course to her relatively poor Hindi— but to be fair, her character is shown to be somewhat flawed. However, when compared in absolute terms to the other performances, she does stand out as a sore thumb. Mr. Prosenjit Chatterjee’s crusader-activist character appears more as a glamorous hero – as rightly pointed out by a character in the film— rather than a foot-soldier of social activism. Pitobash is energetically effective but is in danger of being typecast as a street-smart. Cinematography is top-notch while background score is minimally used.

This then is a movie that is brilliant in parts but the sum of these parts do not necessarily add up to an outstanding whole. Is DB one of the main shining lights of ‘meaningfully entertaining’ films in India? Positively yes. Is ‘Shanghai the film? Remorsefully – No.

    @G_93:

I think you are over-working on Shanghai-BOI. See if its a good movie it will find its audience eventually in theatres, on tv and on internet.

If it is appreciated then BOI’s commentary will make no difference.

Everyone is aware that BOIis good only with numbers. Their commentary is 90% times “NOISE”.

So just take numbers from there and leave the rest.

No one is going to read BOI data and decide if Shanghai is good or bad.

Just my 2 cents on this topic.

    Nirjhar,

“take the BO numbers from BOI but not their commentaries!”

Which Movie till date has Suffered at the BO due to Harsh/Anti BOI Commentary?

    Give me One Example.

    “and do not underestimate
the power of Rowdy Rathore wave”

Who Forced Dibakar to come post RR?

    PST Opened less than LPNY…
WOM and Trending show which Movie is the Bigger Success…Even the Entire Trade was Shocked wid PST.

I saw PST in 5th/6th Week with 80%+ Crowd in Night Show at a High End MP…
The Weekend was going at 80%+ Capacity in it’s 5th Week and the Cinema Owner was V.Happy as he was gtting the Major Chunk as DS Reduces in Subsequent Weeks.

That’s the Power of WOM among the Audience(Not the Pseudo Movie Critics!) that Shanghai is Missing unlike a PST,BBB,PKP,KKG,LSD,Rock On,Wednesday,DevD etc.

Agar Shanghai main Dum hain it still has the 2nd Week by which the RR Wave will be Less…Let’s see what it does(Mind u,I am Not against Shanghai the Movie).

In these 7 Days, G93 might have made more than double of number of comments of what I have made in a whole year.

Ps- A wednesday had phenomenal trending. It had trending of 5.5+ (more than 3I) . It showed a good jump in fourth week then third week. It had 2cr weekend and 11.5cr lifetime. 11.5cr today is like 30cr with changing business prospects and the higher ticket rates. And also one major factor- Audience being open towards such cinemas.

  24. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

@G_93 – I am also of the opinion that swades, rocket singh and mera naam joker were bad films. give me a piece of ur mind, i am connected.

decide the rules 1st. will we have an academic definition of good films and discuss these films? but those will be subjective. anyways here go my sujective view.

swades – a good film is not just picking up a socially relevant subject, thats a good essay, may be a good documentary (even for them the executuion has to be good) swads was neither realistic (remeber gayatri joshi’s elegant fab india sarees, so alos the mother chracter) imaginative (it was the most unimaginative bhashan at best) nor had emotional power ( i am not even using the word entertaiment) everything about swades was so dry no scene ever moves you. thats why it lopped.

acting quality was so bad in swades with sharukh amming as always and rest being just plain theatrical that it was insufferable. and audiences rejected it.

rocket singh – we will come to the 6 minutes climax scene later where ranbeer kapoor (the future abhishek bachchan) ha a premannet frwon on the face in the name o acting. before that lets anlyze the story.

wat story did someone say? i salesman and his antics cant be an issue of national interest. so to be a good film it has to either be hilariously funny or deeply emotional as an individualist drama. rocker singh was neither.

it was so boring that i myself went out 5 times from the theatre to get my frend’s kid brother popkorn, chocolate etc. . this wen in true blue rowdy rahore way i stay away frm kids.

coming back to ranbeer kapoor and his acting in rocket singh he thopugh just wearing a turban and grwoing a real beard was enuff. the guys doesnt have anything except a frown at mos t places, grin at others. not even his stock little-boy-at-the-sea look hat he had in anjaana anjaani and bachna ae haseeenon. wen he froze the frown for 6 minutes in the climax many screamed (tose who had not walked out by then)

mera naam joker – it was raj kapoors worst film and tis oly with satyam shivam sundaram. leave other things aside. padmini of two-globes-for-boobs fame is disguised as a guy and raj kapoor who shares a kholi with her cant make out until one of the globes juts out accidentally in a scene. i rest my case here.

now u will give ur subjective view. utkal shalu didi, suprabh and serenzy will back you. and i will say if its a headcount, lets have a comprehnsive one. and boxofice is hat comprehensive headcount.

Why should anyone care about whats the head count or foot count or eye count..

Why the need for a comparison or comprehensive survey at all.

why do we watch films? to pass our time and get entertained- If I get entertained watching a dulhe raja or a swades..who the hell are 200000 rickshawwalas or 2000 film festival nerds to make me think otherwise… This is something danish will never understand. I understand what you mean :) … still I would say that they have chosen the wrong words, these are harsh words … they could’ve said that “general people did not like the content”, or “the movie didn’t meet general peoples expectations” … and abt your last comments – I agree totally … all that matters is if you’re enjoying a movie, not the head count, foot count or WOM count

    @ G_93

    Yes, I agree … and I didn’t like Rajneeti :)

    @ danish

    Thanks for clearing it

    @ serenzy

That was not my statement, but I like it :D … abt the WOM, the examples you’ve given, against them there are many many movies that failed at the BO despite being a good movie … but then as Suprabh stated earlier the term good movies are subjective to ones taste and choice … take note of the movie Bhavna Talwar’s Pankaj Kapoor starrer “Dharm” … what was it’s BO outcome, will you say that it is not a good movie? … what we were arguing is abt BOI statement that “the biggest reason of a movie’s low collection is always bad content” … but then, Suprabh’s last comments are the bottomline of the debate:

“The whole idea of watching films and finding your picks is subjective” … If I get entertained watching a movie A, B or C that is all what counts

    G93,

My Argument is ‘Wether BOI’s Commentary affects a Movies Lifetime Nett??’

    Give Reply to this first.

Again, I am clarifying I am NOT against Shanghai, infact I am looking frwrd to it wid Dibakar, Emmy & Abhay being My Absolute Fav.

Hope, Kashyap takes a Lesson out of Shanghai and tweaks GOW accrdingly so dat we don’t Lose out Another Good Movie to this BO Madness!

….. And Yes, Even I Hate Satyamshot to the Core…It is a Bakwaas Stinking Garbage of a Blog where ‘din raat’ ppl keep on Licking Bachchan’s Ass(Be it Game,BHTB,Players etc.)

A Stinking Group of Pseudos waiting for the Moment where Bachchan gives a Hit even Predicting a 90cr+ for Players.

Ranbir Kapoor’s attempts to highlight a salesman’s life through his latest outing Rocket Singh – Salesman of the Year have gone awry, as the film has fallen flat at the box

    office.

Produced and distributed by Yash Raj Films (YRF), the film has been directed by Shimit Amin and written by Jaideep Sahni of Chak De! India fame.

Made at a shoe-string budget of around Rs.5 crore, Rocket Singh…, however, couldn’t bring in anticipated footfalls, say experts.

“Rocket Singh has not at all been satisfactory and done very bad business. The occupancy has fallen to 25 per cent Monday from an average of just 68 percent over the weekend,” Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas at Noida, told IANS.

“The content is not being appreciated, as the second half is being called very slow and dull and the climax is being considered to be not at all satisfactory,” he added.

Yogesh Raizada, corporate head, Wave Cinemas echoed the same view.

“The movie lacks mass appeal – audiences could not associate with it considering its content on sales guys, etc. So, the weekend was only average but not up to expectations,” said Raizada.

“The weekend was only close to 70 per cent while Monday it has fallen close to 40 percent,” he added.

The movie is the debut vehicle of Shazahn Padamsee, daughter of ad man Alyque Padamsee and singer Sharon Prabhakar. Gauhar Khan and Sharon also play pivotal roles in the movie.

“The film has been a disappointment for the industry,” said Delhi-based distributor Joginder Mahajan.

The movie also killed Ranbir’s chances of a hit hattrick after delivering two back to back hits with Wake Up Sid and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani.

You need to undrstnd BOI’s POV first bfr Thrashing it.

BOI is Not there to sit & talk which Film Deserved better and Which Movie was more Fabulous btwn RR & Shanghai!

It’s all as Subjective as u can get.

BOI talks abt Movies in Terms f Numbers and they r doing the BEST JOB out there among those available.

@G_93- 1st u need to define wat is a good film. then the whole world needs to agree upon that definition. then only ur dilemma can be solved.
