Bollywood’s 10 Greatest Action Films
As always, my choices are in perfect sync with the ppl’s verdicts. those who wanna know if i plan it that way, well no, its natural! most of the films in the countdown are blockbusters and biggest hits of the year with top 4 being atbbs. only at the bottom end are some superhits.
10. phool aur kaante – it was an action film that was desingned as a romance but action was so overpowering that the only image that comes to mind is ajay devgan riding two bikes, 21 years after the release of the film. if you straint your brain a lot the other image that surfaces is a fight in the college bathroom.
9. wanted/zanjeer these two films have something in common. not not the cop hero dumbo. but the fact that the emotional content in the films is at par with the action and that makes the audience feel for the characters. technology wise both films are seprated by 36 years of progress but the emotional core makes them really like kaante ki takkar.
8. hukumat/ghayal – both had very raw action but sometimes it begins to grate on your nerves. however a section of the audiences lapped up this mindless kind of action too as was later seen in jeet, ziddi and many other films.
7. karan arjun/rowdy rathore- karan aarjun was essentially a reincarnation saga but the action overwhelmed like phhol aur kaante. rowdy rathore is out and out action film and looks like akshay finally got it right after years of martial arts practice and dozens of action films.
6. tezaab – anil kapoor is the most unlikely action hero but then thats the victory of this film. not only he does action but manages to look convincingly angry, perhaps the biggest requirement in any action film that many ‘tae kwon do’ experts fail to understand.
5. bodyguard – there was hardly 3 action scenes in bodyguard. it was a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, separation and reunion. but the 3 action scenes that it had were so impactful that ppl call it an action film, whether to run it down or to praise it to the skies. again when salman gets angry, he gets really angry and you can see it in his blazing eyes. so blazing that many forgot the longing for love and tears they just saw in the previous scene.
4. don- amitabh bachchan’s was the original hero whose anger used to be in the eyes, not the fists. in this film he was helped by a slick camera work and taut direction.
3. ghajini/gadar- both have what is the the biggest requirement of a great action film an emotional core. no wonder both went on to become atbbs when they released and shook the nation into punching and kicking in the sofa seat of the multiplex as well as the foyer of the rat infested singlex. .
2. dabangg – content wins again. with just 4 action scenes dabangg achieved those heights becoz of the strong characterization, a taut script, an emotional core and a comic interpretation of the suppressed feelings of the teeming zillions. natija – second biggest action hit in bollywood history.
1 sholay – no film will ever be able to come to the level of sholay wen it comes to action. imagine the real action hero – dharmendra coupled with the angry young man – amitabh, the most imaginatively written villain in the history of bollywood – gabbar (amjad khan) and a superlative actor like sanjeev kumar who did not have to move a limb to convey anger. sholay was, is and will always be the greatest action film india has ever seen.

0khiladiyo ka khiladi has collected much bigger hit than u r phool aur kante n even mohra n rowdy rathore is bigger hit than karan arjun so stop u bullshit munna.

yes mohra is a superhit but it has two heroes. if u noticed i have taken mostly atbbs and bbs in this list but becoz of lack of them i took some superhits. now including superhits there were too many action films so my criterion was i only tookthose superhits that were solo hero for a fair list. hence phool aur kaante is there in the lsit but mohra is not.
danish ke method mein bhi madness hoti hai. (matlab samajh gaye na?)

if u take footfall karan arjun gross at 52 cr means footfall was 3.5 cr. rowdy rathore gross wud be max 150 cr that is 1.5 cr footfall.
also entertainment tax has fallen. if u take the gross karan arjun at 52 cr comes to 350 cr.

Ankhein was very big Hit .. but not greatest comedy. Greatest comedy vo hoti hai jo 40 saal baad bhi chehre pe big smile le aaye .. Golmaal, chupke chupke and Angoor comes in that category.

1 0If we have 4 parameters . . Boxoffice, TRP, DVD and Casstetes for old movies then choosing only 1 is not enough sample. Scientific theory says that take some sample from all parameters and then come to conclusion. But you are taking 100% from boxoffice and zero from rest of three .. this is completely incorrect and rejected.

1. as i mentioned above, i gave higher rating to a solo hero flick if the verdict for two movies are equal.
2. dabangg (atbb) has higher verdicts than karan arjun(bb) . my dilemma of which movie to keep at wat spot was in case of two movies with same verdict. rowdy rathore has same verdict as karan arjun but dabangg has higher verdict.
and before u ask, in the shrunk universe of the year 2010 PP (patronisng population) dabangg percentage is higher than karan arjun and hence its verdict is justified.
for instance dabangg has almost equal footfall (many say higher) compared to biggest grosser of its times (3 idiots) karan arjun footfall was one thrid of hahk, the highest grosser of that time. so dabangg ius an atbb, KA ia not.
also there are conventional methods of finding verdicts on ROI etc which we all accept, however grudgingly.

ppp are rough calculations based on the ticket sales and average ticket prices and u can make them urself.
by the way i just visited mumbai and went to maratha mandir where the balcony tickets for ddlj is just 20 rs. so here goes ur theory of rs 35 average ticekt price in 1994 (hahk) being 35 rs. i made a video of it which i will soon post. abhi cable nahin hai.

also is it possible that ticket prices at marath mandir, one of the best thetares in mumbai has not had any price hike since 1995 despite multplexes causing 3 times average ticket price in 10 years? no.
also hahk itself had caused near 50% ticket price hikes in single screens (there were no multiplexes at that time)
the fact remains that the ticket prices in 1994 cant be more than 10 rs, may be even lower. they became 15 after hahk caused a revival of thetares, and 18/20/24/30 between ddlj and gadar. so boi fraud that gadar had higher footfall than hahk is also paid propoganda.
at 10 rs and 121 ghross hahk footfall comes to 12 cr, much higher than my earlier estimates.

obviously i wont know the exact budget of sadak but it is definitely possble that sanjay dutt was paid higehr than salman as he must have singned that film in 1990 or may be 1989 when salman had just begun. but that high price was not for any achievements (he had not a single clean hit till 1991) but for being the son of sunil dutt. salman was paid for sanam bewafa watver he wqas for deliveriing an atbb. and so wat even if his saajn fees was less than sanjay. look at wher he si today and compare their fees.

0 0@comefallinchat – i thnk i said above that dabangg is clearly above tezaab as it has an atbb verdict. my dilemma on which film to put above or below was about films with similar verdict. tezaab is just abb and hence there was clarity. its only in the case of films with similr verdicts that i had to use my criterion (two hero, scale of hit etc) for the rest, as a simple law abiding citizen of naachgaana i went by boxofficeindia verdicts on which we all agree to disagree.
abhi clear hui baat.
and the govt has just given notices to hundreds of schools for not giving poor kids admission. the schools do it just to get free land/grants etc but no poor student goes to don bsco. i challenge u to show me a single poor studenty in don bosco mumbai.
besides sajid nadiadwala was from the nadiadwala family the bigtime producers. apart from sajid’s family akshay had relations with the romu/raj sippy family too that launched him. thats how he got a much bigger launch than salman khan, the son of the proud nawaab fallen on bad days, salim khan.
akki is ahead of salma then how come he doesnt have a single biggest hit of teh year?
