IPL 5: KKR storm into final, beat Delhi Daredevils in first qualifier
Pune: Kolkata Knight Riders have made it to the IPL finals by beating Delhi Daredevils in the first qualifiers game at Pune on Tuesday night. KKR knocked out Delhi by 18 runs to reserve berth in final for the first time in the IPL history.
While chasing 163 against, Delhi Daredevils had a bumpy start as they lost David Warner and skipper Virender Sehwag in second and third over.
Warner was caught behind on Shakib al Hasan’s delivery after adding seven runs in chase. He was soon followed by Virender Sehwag. Sehwag was also caught behind at the score of 10 off 7 balls.
Naman Ojha and Jayawardene added 59 runs for the third wicket before Ojha was dismissed by Rajat Bhatia after scoring 29 off 28 balls.
Still in need of 55 runs off 32 balls, Daredevils suffered a major blow when Mahela Jayawardene was stumped out after adding crucial 40 off 33 in chase.
Venugopal Rao was the next man to depart. He caught out at the score of 13 off 22 balls.
Now Delhi had lost its five men with still 43 runs away from the target.
Ross Taylor, who came in to bat at number six failed to ease pressure off Daredevils’ soldiers. Taylor was caught out at 11 off 8.
With Irfan Pathan and Pawan Negi on crease, now Delhi needed 26 runs in the last over. Pawan Negi was stumped at 14 runs on the third ball of the over. He was soon followed Morkel in the next ball.
Yusuf Pathan’s 40 off just 21 balls in last few overs powered Kolkata Knight Riders to set 163 runs target for Delhi Daredevils. Unbeaten Pathan and LR Shukla added 54 runs in just 24 balls for the fifth wicket.
Kolkata Knight Riders had a steady start after electing to bat against Delhi Daredevils. Skipper Gautam Gambhir and Brendon McCullum added quick 48 runs in six overs for the first wicket. Gambhir-McCullum partnership came to an end after Gambhir fall short in reaching the crease. Gambhir was run out after adding 32 off 16 balls.
Jacques Kallis, who came in to bat at number two after Gambhir’s departure maintained the momentum and played some good shots to add some quick runs. On the other hand McCullum also slammed Delhi bowlers all round the field.
McCullum was caught out by David Warner at 31 off 36 while attempting a big shot on a delivery from Pawan Negi.
Soon after McCullum’s departure, KKR suffered another blow in the form of Shakib al Hasan who was dismmised by Irfan Pathan after scoring one run.
Kolkata lost fourth wicket in the sixteenth over when Kallis was caught out at boundary line after scoring 30 runs. He fall prey to Umesh Yadav.
After Kallis’s departure, Laxmi Ratan Shukla got together with Yusuf Pathan to add some quick runs and steer KKR past 150.
Yusuf Pathan, who has been struglling with his bad form in this season displayed some fantastic shots and added quick 40 off 21 balls. Pathan partnered with Shulka to built 56 off 24 balls partnership to power KKR to 162 against Delhi.
