20012-2020 … Will repeat 80′s Magic ??Yakuza | March 9, 2012, 7:10 PM | 13 comments | 1,140 views
Grounds were started preparing back in 2008 with Ghajini, Motto was to being back 80′s action masala extravaganza. However RGV was first one to being back same genre again with James and Shiva in 2005, but it didn’t work back then. May be audience was not mentally prepared to enjoy the heroic stuff of 80′s. I saw James 5 times in cinema and many times on DVD after that .. because i love action genre and i love larger than life action desi heroes and i was missing these things in Bollywood since 15-16 years at least.
Any revolution in cinema always happened with support of either backing big star or extraordinary product. Ghajini was not extraordinary, but was starring most trusted brand actor of bollywood, perfectionist Mr Khan. It was first action Masala movie with big star after long time and its first look simply storm the nation. Movie releases and became biggest grosser of Bollywood crossing 100 Crore mark first ever in history.
Grounds were now prepared, but still it was not clear, if it was just Aamir magic which made Ghajini so successful or audience really want hard core action ? Then came 2009, Wanted starring Salman Khan. Salman had series of flops throughout decade, Wanted was also delayed movie. Ghajini just pampered the sleeping nerves of audience who somewhere within had desire to see movies where they can clap and whistle on grand entry scene of hero. Ghajini was not entirely satisfying as it was not action movie in its core, it was more of love story. We have still desired to see free action and clap worthy scenes and wait was over with Wanted. From start to finish Wanted had what audience want. Action and only action .. with gripping tale and bravo performances. A complete satisfying experience. Wanted did two revolutionary things, 1st bring back the single screen nostalgia and audience back to theater and 2nd generated interest in multiplex audience towards action masala cinema. Now even class was awaiting for next big action movie … and answer was Dabangg. With Munni Badnam and Chulbul Pandey, Dabangg was all over accepted single screens and multiplexes alike. Though as a movie it was as satisfying experience as Wanted, but fire ignited by Wanted worked in favor of Dabangg.
This made even original action heroes of their time to come on form again. Ajay devgan hit century with Singham. Akshay Kumar is coming in Rowdy Rathore.
Ghajini, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Wanted gave us the little glimpses of nostalgic hysteria which Amitabh had throughout two decades and ruled Bollywood like one man industry. Though that hysteria is still unmatched and new generation don’t even know about it, but given these movies in last 3 years, at least they have little glimpses now and can imagine easily how big was hysteria of Amitabh back then when his 4-5 movies always played around in cinemas and all with high profile dynamite entertainment.
But fact is, Bollywood is still trying. In last 3 years, only Wanted and Singham able to give the audience worthy entertainment, which they were looking for in these action movies. Dabangg was half hearted and so was bodyguard. But now Audience is ready to lap .. they are ready to lap entertainment which give them chance to clap and whistle at their hero’s charismatic act. Only issue is who will deliver next ? Not only content, bollywood is now bringing back Massive titles of 80′s .. for example HimmatWala with Ajay devgan.
But i am glad to see that at least entertainment values has been realized. This trend will continue for next 4-5 years at least and then some pseudo intellectuals will come again and then we will have another boring 15-20 years of joint family movies Aka thandi hawa ka jhaunka.
