A comparative analysis of Clean Hits : Amitabh(Upto 1992) VS Salman(Upto 2011) VS Shahrukh Khan(Upto 2011)
Data is taken from sources which were existed at their time. Amitabh Bachchan Data is taken from trade guide(for up to 1984, and rest from BOI). Salman Khan/SRK data is taken from BOI.
* I have no issues data taken for all three actors from filminformation/Trade Guide, But some guys have their reservation because this will lead to much lower numbers for Salman and Shahrukh movies.
* Only clean hits or above are considered
* Mapping of Super Duper Hits Like Sholay/MKS/AAA etc of Trade guide is done to Blockbusters/ATBB of BOI.
* Salman has one super duper hit(KKHH) and one Hit(Baghban) as Special appearance, in both movie he was not used for publicity.
* Amitabh has one super Hit(RKAM) as supporting artiste. He was fully used for publicity and was also part of casting as one of three main leads. His another two movies Andha Kanoon and Gireftaar was Commercial Hits only because of Him, These movies were publicized as Amitabh movies all the way.
* Shahrukh Khan’s has no special appearance Hit.
*Amitabh Bachchan’s only first 22 years are covered, Salman and Shahrukh Khan entire career has been taken.
Summary of clean Hits :
| Actor | Hits | SuperHits | Exceptional Hits /Super Duper Hit | Total Clean Hits |
| Amiatbh | 16 | 11 | 9 | 36 |
| Shahrukh Khan | 11 | 5 | 6 | 22 |
| Salman | 7 | 5 | 7 | 19 |

5what bullshit!
A very unfair comparison.
how many films AB did and how many films were done by SK and SRK?
how many films were released during a year when AB was working and how many films are releasing these days?
What was the hit percentage then and whats the hit ratio these days?Back then ppl had much less options. Films were the biggest mode of entertainment. Fewer films were released. Hence most of them were hits. These days ppl have options: tv, sports, dating, clubbing etc. Every week there are 2-3 films releasing. Hence hit ratio is low.
The proof if that since his come back in 1997 the so called superstar has a pathetic hit ratio. Most of his films have bombed.
If you go back to 50-60s even fewer films were released and there were even lesser entertainment options. Hence stars like DP had a hit ratio of almost 100 %.
So stop this bullshit. If AB would have been in his prime today, his number of hits and hit ratio would have been similar if not worse than SK and SRK.

0Very true .. Agree .. This is not fair comparison .. For Amitabh movies we are taking Very strict verdicts from Trade guide(Where movie was Hit only if do atleast double of its investment) … And for Salman Khan we are taking Very lenient verdicts from BOI where movie become Hit even if make losses or break-even.
Can you please come up with a post where verdicts taken from only Trade Guide or Film information for all three stars ??

Just imagine if BOI theatrical verdict is applied for Bachchan movies he would easily have 55+ hits I think and similarly if FI ROI model applied to Khans movies hits won’t be more than 10-11 isin’t it?.

6Dear i dnt think that Amitabh is as great as SRK or SK..
Guys in now a days in that much entertainment options available khans are making the industry to run..I would just say that amitabh era saw big collections just cz no piracy, very less tvs used.. so if u had to see movie cinema was only option..
Now a days movie is on net the day it comes… so i f wom is average how it is expected to collect..Another big thing is this that fan following is ditributed when it comes to this era.. in that time most cine goers were AB fans while now cine goers are distributed among SK,SRK and amir..

0“now a days in that much entertainment options available khans are making the industry to run”
Completely wrong. Industry was starving for Hits in 70′s compared to 2000 (and BOI does this impossible task). Check BOI data for 70′s and 2000. Between 1976-1981 period, there were only 40 Clean Hits an between 2006-2011, there are 52 Clean Hits (Thanks to BOI lenient verdicts for 2000 era). Nowdays movie become Hit in 3 days, just based on opening. Even loss makers are given His status. But it was a big Task in 70′s for movie to do Hit business. if WOM is bad, it was almost impossible for any movie to survive, because a big budget movie had to run for 25-50 weeks just for recovery.
Shaan(1980) would have been Hit today because nonetheless it would have record breaking opening. But RA.One if released in 1980 would have been utter disaster. Any movie with bad WOM during 70′s and 80′s would have been Flop at that time, but this is not the case today.
Dude come up with better logic next time ..

0Q. Is it easier of big stars today to give blockbusters then say ten years ago?
A. Of course as business is becoming more and more about initial every week. Ten tears ago initial was also important but a film needed at least 100 days run at big centres to be a big hit, today you can score a blockbuster with a solid one week run. -

0Boss.
The population of India in 1980 was 500 million, today it is 1.2 Billion. In 1980, the ratio of youngsters (those less than 25) was much lower than what it is today. So therefore, at present there actually are more people watching movies, they may not all be going to theaters, but indeed there are more Indian eyeballs today than anytime in the past.
The youngest BigB fan from the 80s is well past 40 yrs old today, most probably married, with school going kids. Do you think that demographic is the one which goes FDFS to a movie? How can you expect his solo movies to do well anymore.
I will agree with you that the Khans may plan their careers better. But even they will not be able to mount expensive movies after the age of 60. They may give tactical hits out of small budgeted movies. Every fanboy in his 20s thinks that his idol will remain #1 forever. Unfortunately, chaya, kaya aur maya kisi ka saath nahi deti.
Off course, this entire logic totally does not apply to just one man: Mr Rajnikanth. But then, he is in a regional market, with very different dynamics.

JrB is a grahan to bachchan name. Thats why I have already mentioned that BigB did some PAAP hence he got this NIKAMMI aulad.
SO any discussion of Bachchan’s is not complete without JrB.

Dear who says movie becomes hit after 3 days..
TMK was given above avg verdict by trade after having bumper opening..
Secondly BOI simply see tht movie budget is recovered or nt.. it was SRK who to make his movie hit said budget less after release..
Thirdly dear in 1980 no director would have dare to invest 150+ cr..And yar its quite clear tht in tht era movies had big lifetime run coz no piracy…
If u stop all type of piracy today then Khan’s movies will gross double… coz ppl who didnt watch after knowing bad WOM from net and reviews will go and watch.. so its completely true logic..If u have to compare then compare AB in tht era wd actors of tht time and khans with actors of today’s time as scenario in both era’s is completely different…
And u didnt answer that why Amir brand DB was super hit while AB brand BHTB floped..

TMK is Semi hit at BOI. RA.One is Hit.

Since when recovery movie becomes Hit ??
“in 1980 no director would have dare to invest 150+ cr..”
My take is in 2012 no one can dare to make Grand scale movie like Shaan even with budget of 250 Crore. -

And if
1. there was not Video cassette release on same day of movie release .. Amitabh movies would gross 5 times of already huge gross.
2. If average income of paying public would have better like today, theater going public would have more and movies would have done even more better.
3. If there was BOI like trade at that time, His 80% movies would have Blockbusters, 10% All time blockbusters and for remaining 10% a new term would have required.

0When VCRs started in early 80s, it took hardly any time for piracy to get hold. Why do you think the mid to late 80s saw a huge decline in revenues. In fact, bwood tried hard to petition govt to stop piracy. Govt was hand in glove with the bhais, who would happily copy and distribute video cassettes. Do you know there used to be video parlors with just a 30inch TV, where one could go see new releases. Cable wallahs used to play a new movie every night, and no one could do anything about it.
What was the reason for people to see movies on video cassettes? It was because not even 30% of viewing junta would get an opportunity to see a movie in first week, because in vast majority of second rung towns and cities, the movies would not come to their theaters for several weeks. C centers would get movies after 4-6 months. So for a movie to be a genuine hit, it had to at least run 25 weeks. No movie ever became superhit, unless it completed silver jubilee.

0In my understanding for movies to be hit in that era they had to be liked and play in cinemas for 20-25 weeks. By that logic 90% of movies of Salman would have been disasters in that area barring HAHK for the all lovely Madhuri which trended brilliantlly. SRK and Aamir would have done much better than Salman for sure as generally their movies trend well.

0Check facts .. ask your elders and those who grew up in 70′s and 80′s. Video cassettes were released on same day of movie release. These were cinema scope prints covering both uppper and lower wide with around 50% of screen and with full of Ads. Initially cassette released with atleast 30% movie chopped off and after one or two months, full movie released without Ads in master print. When Nagina was released in 1986, majority was seeing it on VHS at home. At time of Shahenshah, at one side black tickets of 200/- were sold at theater and VHS rental was 80/- for just 3 hour (this was highest rental of VHS ever against normal of 20/- normal price for whole night).
My each word can be verified by many members here who grew up in that era. And No .. Khans would have never gave ATBB at that time, because film-information and trade guide were too strict to give so.

0Ali, yes indeed, this era is ruled by Khans. No one is claiming otherwise. But when people try to claim that any of the Khans are more dominant than BigB was back then, we have to inform them about the reality.
Sites like BOI have tried hard to diminish the spectacular dominance of BigB, and youngsters like you end up believing all that BOI bullshit. For BOI to claim that MKS, Coolie, AAA are not to be classified as ATBBs is pure deceit. There are few other films which Yakuza has pointed out in previous posts, which were Golden Jubilees and huge money spinners. BOI can try desperately to classify them as just hit or avg, but their blackwash cannot dim the memories of people who actually lived in that era, and experienced BigB’s total dominance. -

1How many theaters were there in those times? How many shows? Today a film releases on 2500 cinemas. There are countless shows in multiplexes. If I want to see a film, there is nothing that can stop me. No housefull board. There is youtube too. There is twitter and facebook that can give me reactions to the film and help me make up my mind whether to watch a film or not. What was there in those days? Newspaper reviews that would come once a week?
The business dynamics have seen a massive change. It is a different business model altogether now. This era presents other kind of challenges- that era had movies that ran houseful for 2 weeks and still were labelled under-performers. That’s why I asked Yakuza to upload BO verdicts of Shashi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha etc. We hardly know about these guys. And they are the people who should be compared to AB, not the Khans.

0@shan – exactly. During those days people had to wait for weeks to get the ticket if want to buy on the same day or else they had to book in advance by standing in the ques during morning hrs. However, alizan is talking of these days and comparing the ticket availability of ABs new releases (present ones) with khans movies !

0Yakuza, you have data of tickets sold for Akshay’s hit films?
Akshay might have sold more tickets than anyone. -

0Comparing AB’s current film success with that of the Khans is idiotic. The fact that AB at such a grand age is still headlining films is kaabil e taarif.
Khan fanboys need to pipe down and face facts – while the Khans may be the SRTs, Kallises and the Laras, AB of 70s to early 90s was Bradman.

0Yakuza,
Please do such an analysis for Dilip Kumar. I think during his prime he had a comparable if not better strike rate than Bachchan during his prime.-

0Getting data before 1960 movies is almost impossible to get and verify, in fact even its tough to get data for movies before 1972. However Video Style magazine back then compiled data from trade sources for certain star like Amitabh, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Rajesh Khanna and Jitendra. I have uploaded here data for Amitabh and Rajesh Khanna movies compiled by Video Style, next in pipeline is Dharmendra.

1@yakuza – this is not a ‘danish type post’, its a tashan type post’. in which world ur very 1st film, anand was a hit????????????????? its a semi hit at boi. if its a hit at filminformation then how come u r calling boi lenient???? that means komal is lenient.
actually komal is lenient for bachchans, strict on rest.

1Ofcourse, its not Danish type vague post which throws everything out of air. BOI is lenient for current movies, not for movies back then. They made even golden era looks worst in front of 2000 decade. http://bollybusiness.wordpress.....00-decade/

0So Bodyguard which is a theatrical “super-hit”, converts into “blockbuster” when ROI by overall business is calculated and a theatrical “average” Ra. One gets the “hit” tag when ROI by overall business is calculated.”

0LMAO… yakuza bhai I stopped reading after the first indicator cause in an apple to apple comparison Salman fails miserably just look at the huge number of flops in his prime. I mean it is plain ridiculous for a top rung star in his prime period to give such huge quantum of flops. Must say it is seriously time for you to take a break now enough damage has been done aur some Sallu fans ki saari ek saal ki mehnat paani me beh gayi. Let them atleast breathe now. Hee Hee.

0Haaaaaa … I stopped at 1994 because your best friend Danish wanted so .. as this would be unfair to compare 40 years of Amitabh with 22 years of others …… else you want another gush if i count his movies till now ???????
BTW .. if your Khan is miles behind even after comparing just 22 years of career .. His further years in counting will just improve his list of Hits and success .. and your Khan will look like minuscule …

0which one is better .. 70 out of 100 .. or 36 out of 50 ??
Even if you don’t refrain yourself counting his guest appearances like JBJ, GTGH(Thanks to Salman) etc .. even then his success ratio will be better than Salman atleast.

0@yakuza I don’t know about Amitabh Bachchan but for SRK you have not taken his many films and for Salman you have included films like sawariya and Sawan unlike SRK for whom you have not included similar films like Shakti and hey Ram so your list is totally BIASED AGAINST Salman and WITH SRK.
For such data you should provide each and every film of the actors in their carrer with the verdicts Unlike just Numbers and percentages just to be biased with SRK and against salman.
