My Top 10 Horror Movies Of All Time

I have been a fan of Horror movies since very young age. It was around the age of 12-13 that I started the likings for this genre. I have been watching many Hindi horror movies since then especially those made by Ramsay Brothers. Movies like Khuni Murda, Darwaaza, Khandar, Insaan Bana Shaitan etc. have been reasons for me getting scared and enjoying it at the same time.

As I became old I understood that how poorly these movies were made. The concept used to be fantastic but the execution and performance with those B Grade actors made me laugh at those movies during my early 20s.I used to think how poorly this genre has been handled in Indian Film Industry, though there was never a dearth of good story. In my quest for good horror movies I started look into more recent ones but alas I was disappointed. Only Raaz was one well made horror movie in decades. Hence, due to lack of better horror movies I began looking for some English horror movies with reference of some of my friends in personal life and of course some of friends on NG I now own a good set of number of horror movies (thanks to the Weekly Movie Thread by Ihab).

So here is my list of the TOP 10 BEST HORROR movies which I have come across. I will just name them and attach a video. With internet its not difficult for you all to go into details –

1. The Exorcist – Easily the best horror movie of all time. Here is a blue-ray remastered trailer of the movie.

2. 1920 – The only Hindi movie which was able to scare me and its amongst my top favorite horror movies. Actually comes just after The Exorcist.

3. The Ring – 7 Days and Samara Morgan will come to get you! Scary!!!

4. Paranormal Activity – With only hand held camera it can scare you and scare you till you get the goosebumps –

5. A Nightmare On Elm Street – You dont wanna sleep again, coz if you do … Freddie is watching!!!

6. Drag Me To Hell – Surprised me, I was caught off-guard :) Scared me! Watch it to feel it.

7. The Last Exorcism – Sure it will gave a scare even to an Exorcist!

8. The Amity Ville Horror – Moving into a new house? Yes. After watching this movie. Hmmmmm…. Yap, you will think.

9. The Shining – A lonely and new place can be so …. damn scary. Watch this movie for Jack Nicholsan. He gives a scare with his sheer performance without those make-ups.

10. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) – The first of a kind movie depicting sick mentality a human can achieve. A Classic!

    I.one,

Horror is my favorite genre. I agree with almost all the movies…Although the texas chainsaw massacre is more ugly than scary.

I would also like to add

    Ringu (japanese)
    Session 9
    suspiria
    Rosemary’s Baby
Psycho (not enirely horror but gripping and scary at times)

also amongst hindi..the latest Hanuted-3D was scary

  3. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 4

Session 9? Chalo at last I have got one horror movie which I have not yet watched :) Think its good because Sup says so.

Rosemary’s Baby too is a good movie can be in the list as well if we remove Texas. BTW, it was first of a kind brutal horror movie which kind of made a an impact for 90s/2000s gore movies.

About Suspiria, well I dint liked it much and neither I got scared at any stage so will not include it.

Psycho, as you have mentioned more of a psycho than a horror and its best in that genre.

Amongst Hindi, only 1920. Haunted is good but cannot deserve a place in top 10.

Paranormal 1 and 2 scared the hell out of me… Some people hate paranormal series but I just cant watch these movies alone..

igurvinderpal, 1st was an unexpectedly good movie. 2nd seemed repetition. Here is one video of the audience reaction.

Sachin bhai, great post and after a long while from you!
I am also a big horror fan. However, havent yet managed to watch Exorcist. Suspiria & Session-9 also I havent seen. Agree with you on the rest. Also, I loved Veerana, it is 2nd best Indian horror after 1920.
Another suspense/horror/thriller which I love is Shutter (Thai). Dont watch the attrocious English remake. The original is atmospheric with a solid chilling ending.

  8. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 1

Yes Devesh pra, haven’t got time since a long.

Veerana was one hell of a movie back in 90s. Haven’t watched Shutter, seems I need to watch it.

Though psycho movies seem similar but they are totally different genre. My top 10 psychopath movies can be -

    1. Psycho

    2. Fight Club

    3. Silence Of The Lambs

    4. Hannibal

    5. Halloween

    6. Se7en

    7. My Bloody Valentine

    8. The Vanishing

    9. Saw series

    10. Shutter Island

  9. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 2 Thumb down 1

I.One I have some movies for you if you haven’t watched them already :-

    The Grudge
    The Uninvited
    Insidious
    The Others
    Sixth Sense
    Trick or Treat
    Angel’s heart
    Let the right one in
    Exorcism of Emily Rose

I am not a fan of horror movies anymore though I use to be one when I was like 13-14 but those ones normally revolved around ghosts and supernatural. Around the same time I use to like slasher movies like I Know what you did and urban Legend… but I have always hated the “gory” horror movies and the typical, predictable Horror Slasher movies. More into “true” thrillers now.

About the movies you mentioned, I have seen all except Texas Chainsaw Murders. 1920 surprised me alot and I absolutely liked it. It was nice though some scenes were copied from one or the other movies related to “Exorcism”. Drag me to Hell was freakishly funny but good. The Shining was true chilling horror.. just the kid riding in long corridors and empty halls were enough to send a chill down your spine.

    Ihab,

The others and The sixth sense both are awesome movies but not really scary

Let the right one in- Great (one of my all time fav) movie but not scary at all.

  12. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

Haven’t seen any. Not a fan of the genre. As a kid used to find Paapi Gudiya really scary. I think the last horror movie I saw was 13B- kind of liked it- was not exactly horror.

  13. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

I would definitely add RAAT to the list.. first hindi horror movie to scare the hell out of me.. i can still remember Revathy’s white eyes on terrace.. Chilling…RGV’s best…..

  14. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    My top horror genre movies
    Veerana
    Purana Mandir
    Purani Haveli
    Samri
    Dak Bungla
    Many others

    P. S. – the reason of me liking these movies is other than horror.

  15. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 1 Thumb down 0

    Ihab, thanks for the list.

The Grudge – A decent horror movie.
The Uninvited – Have to watch it.
Insidious – Have to watch it.
The Others – As Sup mentioned its not really a horror movie but a thriller
    Sixth Sense – do –
Trick or Treat – A good horror movie.
    Angel’s heart – A decent one.
Let the right one in – More of a vampire love story. Hated it.
Exorcism of Emily Rose – A good horror movie. If not in top 10 this movie will find its place in top 15.

dwnpiyush – 13B is a really nice effort. When I went to watch this movie I was in UAE and not many audience were present. The best part was my seat no. was 13B :)

Sachin – Except that one scene there is nothing scary in Raat. Even Bhoot is a better movie than Raat.

      I.one,

Although The others is more of a thriller (a horror thriller basically) and its not really scary…but its an awesome watch….so much so..that I still can’t decide..which was better The sixth sense or the others

“P. S. – the reason of me liking these movies is other than horror” – Rajesh what exactly is the reason man if not horror :)

The movies you mentioned were really nice movies back when I was 12-13. Veerana was a really good one at that time. It used to scare me a lot when I was in my primary school :)

  17. Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    I was 16 – 17 at that time, should I say more.

Nice list ibrahim bhai, i dont think anybody here minds a good scare once in a while .
Neway, The genre “Horror” not so long used to my fav keyword , i think i have hardly missed anything related to this on ….i had a maniacal compulsion to watch every horror movie irrespective of whether its a B-Grade or a one with good production values. But over the last few years i went through slow transition & the overwhelming urge to watch “horror” films has diminished quite a lot. The reasons possibly could be the lack of excitement, predictability & the lack of inventiveness in this genre & moreover the whole idea of “scary horror films with ghosts/demons ” has also become diluted over time with the addition of so called “awakening” of certain hybrid genres like body horror, slasher, creature features etc etc. Nowadays the so called “icons” of horror genre like Vampires, Werewolves, Zombies has started competing for their supremacy in romance & popcorn action feasts like Twilight, Underworld series, Resident Evil series & with the surge & the demand of comedy/horror films in this generation the real “horror” movies r getting tarnished.

Out of the movies u have “Exorcist” never registered any substantial impact as such barring few scenes (the 360 degree head turn, climbing down the stairs upside down) maybe bcause i saw it in a different era where the idea of horror movies have become very redundant. I also didnt like the heavy religious overtones used in the movie. The shining was truly haunting , it really gives u an idea how claustrophobia works & the eerie humming noise throughout the movie makes u so chilly & remorse . Drag Me To The Hell, The Ring, Amytiville Horror, Texas Chainsaw Massacre , Nightmare on Elm Street (i m hoping u r mentioning about the old not the remake one) are all good.

BTW, try to catch this ones if u havent already-

    Carrie
The Fly (possibly the best body horror movie around)
Pet Cemetery & Christine (both adaptations of stephen kings stories, a bit cheesy but good)
    An American Haunting
    The ruins
    Mirrors
The Thing (essentially a creature feature but boy was pretty tense )
    dog soldiers
    The haunting (1963 version)
nosferatu (B/W silent adaptation of Bram strokers Dracula)
    The descent
silent Hill (pretty good compared to the ones being churned out nowadays)
    Wolf Creek
    Devil
    Rec.
Interview With the Vampire (not a scary one, more of a drama , but possibly one of the best vampire flick out there)
    Dawn Of The Dead
Alien (possibly gives u the best sc-fi shakes after JAWS )
    30 Days Of Night
The Strangers (such a brutal & heart breaking conclusion)

BTW, there are “DOnt Be Afraid Of the Dark” & “fright Night” (remake) which came in the recent past worth a one time watch atleast . I also intend to watch “Women In Black” starring Daniel Radcliffe , hearing some good things about it.

Just checked this post back, thought I should add a title or two but I was pleasantly surprised with the number of views this post has received. Donno about stats at NG, Sup may clear it whether such views are normal or its just one of the highly visited post.
