TOP COP MOVIES IN BOLLYWOOD.

23

I just felt like going through some of the best cop/police movies made in Bollywood. As my exposure to cinema began in the late 90’s I am a little partial to that decade. You people can add some of your best cop(police) movies through the years, but my focus will remain mostly on the post-90’s era as I am well versed with this period more(I will soon start seeing more and more of Bollywood movies from the 50’s,60’s,70’s,80’s as and when I get the time and the torrents file on the internet.).

So, let us begin… Some of my favourite cop movies in Bollywood till date.

1.Zanjeer- The ‘definitive’ Bollywood cop movie that catapulted Amitabh Bachchan to long lasting Stardom. Inspector Vijay guns down the Bad Guys and avenges his parent’s death. With a henna-haired Pathan for company Inspector Vijay was an honest cop forever. Amitabh Bachchan OWNED the movie and how can one ignore the Unforgetable- “Yeh Police Station hain, tumhare baap ka ghar nahi.”
RATING – 2.5/5

2.Shakti-Ashwani Kumar(Dilip Kumar in a ‘cracker’ of a role) chooses the law above his family, even when his son is kidnapped. He ends up losing Vijay(Amitabh Bachchan) to the world of crime. Masala Bollywood Movie never looked much better with these two icons setting the screen on fire.
RATING – 5/5

3.Ardh Satya-Om Puri as Anant Velankar pitches in a Wonderful performance as an honest cop, who is remorselessly sucked into the corrupt system. A GOOD WATCH….!!!
RATING – 3/5

4.Sarfarosh-A Gripping thriller that had ACP Ajay Singh Rathore(Aamir Khan in a splendid performance) unmask the unlikely spy from Pakistan. A first of its kind of slickly produced thrilling drama. Directed with a strong intention by John Mathew Manthan, the film was a first to name ‘the names’ as ‘videshi taaqat’ finally became ‘Pakistan’. A Riveting Film to watch. Not to be missed.
RATING – 3/5

5.Shool-An underrated gem from the Badlands of Bihar,Inspector Samar Pratap Singh(Manoj Bajpayee) takes on the local henchman Bachhu Yadav(Sayaji Shinde in a brilliant role) and goes down all guns blazing. A mesmerizing act by manoj that got overshadowed by Manoj’s ‘Bhiku Mhatre’ character of Satya.Raveena Tandon in one of her best performances till date. The films sure to bring a lump in your throat(happens rarely to me) seeing the unfairness happening to Manoj’s character. This is the “BAAP” of Singham as far as the conflicts between the Hero & the villain goes…. Shilpa Shetty sizzles with ‘main aayi hoon UP-Bihar lootne’(mother of munni badnaam hui)…!!!
RATING – 4/5

6.Gangaajal-Prakash Jha fictionalises the Bhagalpur killings of the 1980’s in a gripping film that reprises the honest cop v/s corrupt politician angle. If you thought ‘Singham’ was entertaining, you haven’t seen the ‘Hard Hitting Truthness’ of Gangaajal…Absolute treat to watch….Shows just why Ajay Devgn is one of the most ‘respected’ actors around. Not to forget the absolute fascinating supporting cast who do full justice to their cop roles. “Aankh Dikha tha hain, madar jaat”—EPIC!!
RATING – 4/5

7.Khakee-Amitabh Bachchan & Akshay Kumar are cops escorting a dreaded terrorist. Bachchan’s introduction and the monologue at the Village Fair is a KILLER. So is Akshay’s role as the junior cop who is sharp and witty. Aishwarya and Tusshar sleepwalk through their roles though but Ajay Devgn as the Villian is just about convincing. The film belongs to Bachchan-Kumar all the way. This is deffo better then ‘Waqt:A Race Against Time’ and Akshay’s death scene is MIND-BLOWING. It also has some melodius songs.
RATING – 4/5

8.Black Friday-Anurag Kashyap’s reconstruction of the investigation into the 1993 Bombay Blasts is not strictly a cop film. But it has Kay Kay Menon in crisp act as a top cop,Rakesh Maria. No need to elaborate more on the film.I just feel short of words while talking about Black Friday. The interrogation scene between Rakesh Maria(Kay Kay Menon) & Baadshah Khan(Splendid Aditya Srivastav-CID guy) will stay with you forever.
RATING – 4.5/5

9.Sehar-This taut thriller is set in Uttar Pradesh is an under-rated/forgotten gem. Arshad Warsi shines as the head of a special task force, which chases down the brutal local mafia with the help of a professor. Truly a master class thriller. A MUST WATCH GEM….!!!!
RATING – 3.5/5

10.Dabangg-The movie needs no words to define the cult status it has achieved among the cine goers(Classes included).Salman Khan Sizzles the screen and completely OWNS the film.He comes up with an AWESOME performance and gives hindi filmdom the totally Bad Ass CHULBUL PANDEY.(I just LOVE it when he says ‘hamara naam hain chulbul pandey, hum yaha ke robinhood hain’).The film dint work for me but salman as Chulbul was a relevation and awesome to watch. He was as comfortable doing a jig with munni as he was when beating the pulp out of cheddi singh. “Hum tumhe itne ched karenge……” ?
RATING-2.5/5

11.Singham-Ajay Devgn again gives us a sizzling performance as Bajirao Singham in this one.Wonderfully directed by the new ‘masala’ king Rohit Shetty the clashes between Devgn & Prakash Raj(another delightful character in the movie) are a treat to watch. The Konkan Backdrop lends a complete rawness to the film and the rest of the supporting cast(as cops) act ably well.Ashok Saraf’s monologue in the pre-climax is worth watching. “Zarka tumhi loka ni hi phillum nahi pahili tar majhi Satkel….”
RATING – 3.5/5

12.Wanted-The ‘comeback’ film of the SUPERSTAR(read Rockstar IMO).What a film and what a performance again by the baddest of them all…SALMAN KHAN….Salman never played salman better in any movie then in wanted.Totally suave, cool with right amount of sarcastic humour in his talk and swagger in his walk….salman makes the film delightful all the way.Prakash Raj in another superb role.Mahesh Majrekar too pitches in one heck of a performance.great songs, good supporting cast and a ‘commitment’ fulfilled…this south-remake is up there with the likes of ghajini & singham for me….truly deserved a 150cr+ net in India…this film is a 1-man army all the way….!!
RATING – 4/5

13.Deewar-Forget Amitabh Bachchan’s stellar performance for a while and you get to see a bravo performance from Shashi Kapoor as the ‘honest cop/bhai’ to the bad guy. Deewar’s Inspector Ravi who arguably owns the most famous comeback line in Bollywood: “Mere pass maa hain”. I don’t consider myself worthy of praising this movie much more then it already has been done by more greater mortals. “A MUST-MUST-MUST WATCH”
RATING – “BEYOND RATING”

14.Aakrosh-a gem of a movie, highly underrated which was released in 2010.set in the backdrop of honour killings, two CBI officers investigate the case and find themselves in dirty politics. Akshaye Khanna as the CBI officer is good but its Ajay Devgn once again whose portrayal as the brave officer steals the limelight…it would be a Sin to not mention Paresh Rawal performance as the corrupt cop in this film. Bollywood vilians can take a lesson or two from paresh on how to be MEAN to the CORE till the ending of the film.
RATING – 4/5

15.Indian-Sunny Deol as a Cop is fascinating to watch and that’s where ‘Indian’ scores.A film which has the charismatic ‘Sunny Paaji Moments’ like in Gadar but totally justified.Watch out for the monologue by sunny where he explains to a senior officer at a police meeting as to how the ‘aam junta’ views the police force as equal to garbage….spectacular performance..!!
RATING – 3/5

16.Shootout at Lokhandwala-one heck of a film which I can go on raving about for ages.a movie that blew me away from start to end.splendidily directed by apoorva lakhia and extracting super performances from the likes of sanjay dutt, viviek oberoi and sunil shetty is no easy task.Viviek excels in his portrayal of maya dolas but sanjay dutt also matches to vivek frame to frame with his “main teri G maarunga” act.SUPERB…!!!
RATING-3.5/5

17.Garv-If any film deserves all the accolades it gets its Garv.Highly Under-rated(even by many salman fans). What a movie and what a sterling performance by Salman Khan.If there was any cop who could beat Chulbul Pandey at his own game I think you don’t need to look ahead of ACP Arjun Ranawat. A hard hitting film to the core it is enjoyable and intense at the same time. I sometimes pity salman fans as they don’t make such films of ‘bhai’ a Blockbuster(instead of pathetic Ready & average Bodyguard). A MUST WATCH FILM….The Interrogation scene is like out of this world…. Salman in a role of a lifetime…Easily one of his top5 movies in his career….!!! The cross sign sallu makes with his hands is worth a Whistle….!!
RATING – 4.5/5

18.Kurukshetra-Sanjay Dutt as the honest cop steals the limelight big time in this movie which came shortly after a spectacular Vaastav(which was MIND-BLOWING in itself). This movie went largely unnoticed as the content was not upto the mark. But sanjay’s cop act is worth a watch.Ably Supported in a Gem of a role by Sayaji Shinde
RATING – 2.5/5

19.Ram Lakhan-If you are in the mood of watching some Masaledaar Bollywood Movie with fun, action, emotions and drama thrown in right amounts then treat yourself to this absolute fun ride of a movie.Anil’s cop act will leave you in splits and Jackie Shroff(also as a cop) acts well. With all the usual suspects(madhuri, anupam kher) in place this one’s a joyride all the way. “One two Ka four,Four two ka One….My name is Lakhan….!!!”
RATING – 3/5

20.Aan: Men at work-Again a hard hitting underrated cop movie with fabulous performances from akshay, sunil, paresh and shatrughan sinha.A Superb portrayal of how politics and business heads try and manipulate the police force and let the Mumbai mafia get away with their illegal activities. If sunil’s performance strikes a chord with you then paresh’s performance also makes you go ROFL. But it’s akshay kumar once again who steals the show with some superb acting and killer dialogues. One of madhur bhandarkar’s underrated gems….do give it a watch…!!.. “peeche se ghusaaunga(danda),aage se nikalunga…”…akki at his best…!!
RATING – 3.5/5

21.Ab Tak Chappan-Nana Patekar in an applause worthy role.Backed by RGV,this shimit amin’s debut movie is riveting from start to end.Though the pace dips sometimes but the execution of the film is BRILLIANT. Watch it for Nana Patekar all the way…this one’s deffo better and miles ahead of Shagird.
RATING – 2.5/5

22.Mumbai Meri Jaan-Though not essentially a cop movie, the movie is based on the aftermaths of 7/11 mumbai train blasts and has four tracks running in the movie. But unanimously the Paresh Rawal track steals your heart away totally.Ably supported by Vijay Maurya as his junior Paresh steals the film away as a retiring policeman. His dialogue delivery, expressions and the way he goes about his role are just Fantastic. There is humour in his dialogues & pain in his past story. His perofrmances in aakrosh and Aan are too good but this one owns them all by a margin. Two scenes that show extreme superiority are one when Paresh explains to his junior(vijay maurya) how he got deceived by the rich class when he tried to unearth a scam & second is easily one of the best scenes Cinema history will ever see…Paresh Rawal’s End Monologue to his colleagues at the police station.
RATING – 3.5/5

23.Dum-Vivek Oberoi plays a troubled cop who gets unfair treatment from the system. One of the most honest and daring attempts of cop movies made in India in date. The picturisation of ‘jaan main dum’ song is absolutely brilliant and ‘babuji zarra dheere chalo’ is not to be missed.Vivek plays his part well with good supporting performances from sushant singh & atul kulkarni.
RATING – 2/5

Well that’s my list…you can add yours and also have a nice(sane) discussion on movies I mentioned. hope u all liked reading it……awaiting your thoughts and comments…

*Suprisingly, hrithik has never done a Cop movie till now(I guess) and SRK tried with ‘One Two ka Four’ but let’s not get into that crap right now….sadly, srk & hrithik are missing big time from the above list..
*there was this movie called Shiva, directed by RGV and nagarjuna in lead role….havent seen it so dint name it….but heard it’s one of the best and it was also there in milind’s top 100.
*women cop stories are hardly made and even if they are made they aren’t upto the mark(like say ‘silence of the lambs’)…the only 2 movies that remind me of well made women cop stories are Samay(sushmita sen in a good role) and tesawini(OTT all the way).
*as u will notice, most of the cop/police stories are located in the badlands of UP/Bihar or in Mumbai region…..the mass connect when stories are based on these regions seems to be very high.

*the cop movies to look forward to are :-

Don2(PC playing a Kickass cop)
Department(RGV,Bachchan,Rana,Sanju and some tough cops in the mix…can’t get better)
Shootout at Wadala(prequel to lokhandwala…..anil kapoor as isaque bhagwan….totally must watch for me)
Zilla Ghaziabad(hearing gr8 things about it till now….hope it impresses)
Rowdy Rathore(Akki back with a BLAST…. ”Ilaaka tera, Dhamaka Mera….!!!”)
Talaash(Aamir….u the hope…u the magician…..u the Gem man…!!)

THANK YOU.
