The “SUBSIDY” Bullshit

What has the Indian Box Office come to?

What have our ‘respected’ trade analysts come to?

Here’s a thing to look at….

Common Indian Movie goer doesn’t  give a shit about the 1st weekend collections of Murder2  OR the CP Berar collections of Bodyguard OR the Monday Drop of Thank You. #justsaying

He checks out the film’s songs, trailers, star cast etc….Sees the film with his family and for him RA.One is a ‘bekaar’ movie and 3 Idiots is an ‘all time classic’. He enjoys his 3 hours in the cinema hall, comes out, has a pleasant weekend dinner with his family and heads home. Nor does he log on to BOI or checks out Taran Adarsh’s latest tweet.

Now,after  this  comes the turn of we movie fanatics who view various BO sites, blogs, forums to know where the movie stands etc.

We constantly follow the likes of ‘adarsh’ and ‘nahata’ and every word of BOI(and Doga) is scrutinised with a magnifying glass. Then come in the Fan/Anti-Fan rants, BO wars and we all very well know ‘how’ to tackle each and every star in ‘what’ way by saying ‘what’ against that star(to ignite the fans of the particular Star) etc…Point is, we can hardly ever agree with the non-fans.

Now here’s my main grudge.

Till 26th Oct 2011, a Hindi Film released in India (and its 12 circuits) never required a ‘paisa’ of the Subsidy Money to prove to be a success at the box office.

In Short, we were never at the mercy at the Money received from the UK govt (which in itself is in one heck of an economic crisis I hear) to help Bollywood with generous millions to prove that my ‘STAR’ had a BO Hit this year.

RA.One changed that and how……. Every film in the past history shot in foreign lands started asking a ‘subsidy’ for itself (well the film din’t ask, but the FANS of a Star starring in that film asked)…

I mean when we can have the likes of Namaste London, Housefull, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham(to name a few) as good enough successes at the BO based solely on the purpose of their money earned through BO and other rights why now we need to stoop to such a level  to get a ‘success’ that we need the damn money from a foreign govt. I seriously ‘PUKE’ on such type of successes and would like to see the trade analyst too to disregard such income tactics which suddenly out of nowhere came in handy for RA.One to show the film as a success when the film dint perform as expected. Out of nowhere the UK subsidy came in and saved the day for RA.One when it was cleanly faltering post the 5 day weekend.

I as an ardent SRK admirer over the years am shameful of calling ‘RA.One’ a Success by such ‘WTF’ tactics like subsidy and stuff.

WHY DO WE AS Box Office LOVERS AND BOLLYWOOD MOVIE FANS NEED THE SUPPORT OF “SUBSIDY” TO MAKE A MOVIE A SUCCESS???????????????

Why can’t RA.One and (subsequently) Desi Boys do well at the BO itself irrespective of their subsidies?

Why do they need subsidies as their ‘life supports’ to be tagged a success?

When a ‘3 idiots’ or a ‘Bodyguard’ or a ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa’ or a ‘Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi’ doesn’t need such dubious helps why do such hyped films from our superstars need subsidies to recover their costs?

Sorry Mister Analyst but I am not ready to buy your new bullshit @ all……….!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do a 160cr+(RA.One) OR a 75cr+(Desi Boyz) India Nett and no one even needs to look into that subsidy matter at all which is an absolute desparate attempt by the analyst(mainly Komal Nahata & Taran Adarsh) and ‘EROS’ I guess to show the amount recovered.

Instead of pondering on various subsidies and income through rights (satellite, music etc.), we fans must sit and rue the fact that the films aren’t collecting what they are meant to collect at the first place.

“The film has failed, the story hasn’t connected with the masses,it got ‘A’ rating,India ka match tha Friday ko…!!!Maharashtra bandh tha…….It did 120cr with negative WOM…!!!”

Arre,120cr gaya bhaad main……Negative WOM kyun tha BC…..film better banate to Subsidy ka cheque ke liye nahi marna padta tha(which I guess is still awaited).

When I first took some interest in the box office in my early days, I would strictly go on BO business basis but as I read more and more I came to know about these various satellite, music rights etc. Then I read this absolute Fantastic article by Doga which is very knowledgable about the working of Indian BO. Not that I am a BO expert or a BO King ( ;) ) but I do follow the BO trend of every film of Bollywood and have a great deal of knowledge of how the Indian BO functions.

But this subsidy thing is ABSOLUTE  BULLSHIT IMO and is done maliciously out of nowhere to save 2 faltering films produced by the same production house.

It would be such a pleasing feeling internally(especially for the fans) to see our STAR’s movies to GO,SET THE BO ON FIRE and not wait for subsidies from foreign govt. to make their films a success….!!!!!

For me,RA.One is ‘Below Average’ and Desi Boyz is ‘Average’ Box-Office wise…!!

Even during ‘My Name Is Khan’ such huge BO wars happened all over the internet.

I personally felt since the movie did  ~100cr overseas  +  ~75cr indian net, that was a clear Semi-Hit+ in my books.

But I am truly disappointed with RA.One & Desi Boyz as far as BO goes (I ain’t talking about movie content here at all).

THANK YOU.

If a government of a country gives you a subsidy for filming in their country then why not take it?

@serenzy kank n oso were also bad movies but ra.one tops the trash products

@Karan its fine if a country give subsidy.Subsidy is not business,it just goes to makers.Business means theatrical revenues.

Can anyone post any link showing a report about this subsidies in publication of that country( UK / Germany) ? to me the calms seem totally dubious. Now what is subsidy? If you are buying something for 100 I might give you a subsidy of 10%, 20% so you pay me 90 or 80. So a subsidy of 15 cr means I should have spent say 80 cr, 100 cr in that country. Was that kind of money spent by Ra One in UK or Don 2 in Germany? What was the basis for calculating the subsidy amount? Any article in any international magazine or newspaper?

    @ Utkal

this subsidy claim will Die its own Death…!!

In the history of bollywood it has been dubiously claimed only by 2 films till now…RA.One & Desi Boyz….

and see the common factor between these two Movies..

    1.shot in UK

    2.Produced by EROS

So this subsity thing is complete BS…!!
